Declutter: Really...if you stopped here, you'd have the potential to elevate your home considerably.  2. Freshen up worn pieces: Giving tired pieces a little extra TLC - a fresh coat of paint or stain will go liven your home. 3. Check your color palette: Do you have an intentional color palette with one foundational color and a couple of accent colors? Are those colors flowing throughout your open concept home? If not...this is a great place to start. 4. Check the scale and proportion of your items: If things look too small, too big, too full, too short, too wide - it could be throwing off the balance of your room. Adjusting the scale of items that are mis-proportioned is a big step toward elevating your home. 5. Repetition of design elements: Know the difference between repetition and too much of a good thing. There's a lot more to designing a renovation than making aesthetic choices. While that's the fun part, there are the more practical elements to consider as well, such as budget and architectural constraints. So, with a host of different decisions to be made, how do you know where to start?  Today on the podcast, I'm joined by the incredible Kate Lawrence, an interior designer and developer who specialises in residential design. Kate shares with us the process she followed for her recent duplex developments, and her approach to undertaking renovations that are not only cohesive in their design, but functional and sustainable.   In our conversation, we discuss the importance of creating cohesiveness to ensure a coherent blend between the exterior and interior of a home. For example, a kitchen should look like it belongs in that house, and the living room connected seamlessly to the facade. Kate sheds light on her design philosophy to achieve this result, which always starts from designing from the outside. We then move on to materials, and Kate discusses her preference for certain materials that add both elegance and functionality. Timber shutters, for instance, play a pivotal role in creating the desired ambiance, while stone and warm white render add character and warmth to the exteriors. We talk about the importance of making selections that strike a balance between visual appeal and practicality, particularly when there are budgets to keep in mind.  We explore the benefits of early integration in a project, where becoming involved as soon as possible enables the design team to make informed decisions, potentially adjust architectural elements and set a clear vision for the project from the get-go. How can we utilize this, or what advice or suggestions can you give us? That will help us with this. Christa: Yes, Michael? So I think when you talk about patient retention, it really comes down to, one thing, and that's a great patient experience.And to have a great patient experience, I think you really need to dial in for. Key points. and the first one is consistency. You have to have your systems and protocol in place. Um, the patient needs to know what to expect for that appointment, and then you need to deliver that. So once that is done, that's the first step in trust.After you repeat that process in every area of your practice, the patients begin to trust you. So, um, when you think about systems and protocol that you need to have in place to have good patient retention, There really are a lot that go into it, but if you look at just a few, look at your policies, look at your cancellation policy.Look at your confirmation policy. Do your patients know what they are or are they calling to cancel their appointment? And the staff is. Annoyed that they're canceling their appointment within two short timeframe, but they never were aware of your policy. That creates friction between the staff and the patient, obviously.So the patients need to know exactly what to expect on every level. So this is prepping them for their appointments. If it's a first appointment, even if it's a return appointment, they want to know what to expect. And once you're hitting those x. Expectations, um, then the patient starts to trust you. I think you also have to think about your policies when it comes to follow up.So when you're following up with patients that cancel, are we just letting them fall through the cracks and then picking it up at another time when they're not necessarily thinking about that appointment anymore? Or is there a good protocol in place that we've became consistent on within the staff?obviously when you're looking at patient retention, your attrition rate will start to go up as soon as those patients hit a certain month mark, and they're not reappointing. So look up at how you're reappointing. Are you reappointing? And what is your follow-up system look like? Most offices these days use um, automation, which is great, but when are you going to get a personal touch and.in that process with the patient. So is what I find with the offices that I work with is that a lot of staff will have limiting beliefs, in this area specifically. They'll say, well, I'm looking at their history and it shows that we've texted them this many times. I'm not going to reach out and annoy them.But the simplest form of communication and even texting, still using the automation, but just saying, hi, this is Krista from this dentist office, is a way that your patients do start to respond. Um, and at times you may have to, yes, pick up the phone and contact them directly, but patients are just like us busy, so they're appreciative of that.So I think. , there's a a big hold up with the staff that I see that are in charge of doing this process. It's just not being done because they simply don't think it needs to be, or they feel like they're annoying patients when they do that. So the second one, that I think is a key factor, especially in today's world.Like I said, patients are busy is simplicity. So is it easy to schedule in your practice? do you send online forms? But in that initial phone call you're asking further address, . No. So I see a lot of redundancies like that. Or are you having them fill out your med history form, which obviously is necessary and they're entering all their insurance information.But then when they come in, that's the first question that you're asking them. Do you have a copy of your insurance card? Makes the patient feel like, well, why did I spend all that time doing it for you? So we really need to get the simplicity in the office and look at, again, look at all of your. , are they simple for the patient or are they about us?So are they about making our jobs easier or are they simple for the patient? And I believe that, um, when you really take a step back and look at the patient experience and look at the staff process, that it all can be intertwined and be easy for the patient and still work for the staff. but it does take some work to get it there.So, um, a huge one that I see, and I was actually in an office just this morning and this happened was, insurance, right? Insurance is confusing for patients. A lot of times patients will have a medical insurance card and it won't have the dental on it, and they'll say, well, I didn't get it until card, which is true.And you know, people that work in a dentist's office, staff members do know that to be true and. , I can think of the top three in my area that are notorious dental insurances for not giving a dental card. Right? And I, I would say Delta is one of those among any area, and we all know and have the capability to log into that Delta website, type in a social and a birthdate when that patient is standing in front of you.and pull their benefits up within, I won't even say minutes, within a minute. So that's something that's totally at our reach that I see offices passing back to the patient, well, you need to talk to your hr. You need to find out who's your dental insurance, or We can't file, or we can't see you, or whatever.The thing that they're saying is, when really if you would just type that number into Delta or do a employer search on your, practice management software, they all have it, right? The the answer is right there in front of us. So if we put in a little bit of effort for that patient is what happens is it kind of clears out all of the backend side of things.You're not having to follow up with that patient, make sure they did call back, then verify the benefits, and then send the claim. making that effort for the patient coming up with an. and then your backend process is cleared. So in this case, the patient, he did find out who his insurance was through and he was just saying, oh, I just have a member id.I don't have a card. Is that okay? I said, yes, we can help. I messaged him back. I just said, I'll just text you back and make sure everything's good. And he said, wow. Thank you so much. Your staff is awesome. I am so happy because this was such a stressful morning when I didn't have the insurance and I was trying to find the information.So, as we know, dental insurance doesn't make things easy for us either. They don't make it for the patients easy as well. So I think that's an. Major area where the staff members are always more well-versed than the patients that you really can help them. And that kind of thing goes a long way. Um, so if we approach talking to our patients with an attitude of servitude rather than entitlement, you should have brought me that card.That was your responsibility. You knew you were coming for an appointment, whatever their reasoning may be. If we approach it with an attitude of how can I help? , then that patient obviously is going to have a better experience. So the next one that I see is cohesiveness. And this kind of plays into the other ones as well, um, into consistency.But the patients will ask the same question multiple times. We all know that. So they're going to ask the same question when they call and talk to the front desk as they may ask the clinician when they sit down for their appointment. So is that answer always the. or are we contradicting each other within that answer?So if one staff member answers this question and. another answers it differently. Um, it can often turn into a he said, she said situation, right? And then depending on your office culture, depends on how that's gonna play out. Are you gonna start having staff members throw each other under the bus or, um, what's that gonna look like?Are you gonna just always speak? Calling saying, oh, well, we have to get our office manager involved and they can figure it out. Um, so what does that look like? Is there a cohesive feel in the office? and is there a positive. Office culture on how the staff are interacting with each other as well as the patients, how the doctors are interacting with the staff and the patients.Is there a cohesive kind of culture that the patients then know to come and expect and can be true at your office? . so if you really have all of these three things dialed in, your patients will start to trust you because they'll have no reason not to. Right? Um, so then I think there's one last piece that if you add in, it just takes your office to the next level.And that is the piece of connection and care. So you have trust without this, but then when you add it in, you really start to get those loyal patients that you then have no problems, retain. . when you think about that, there's really a lot that you can do with it and you can really cater it to your office and the core cultures that your office has to offer.Um, but the first thing is make it each visit personalized. And it, it sounds silly to say out loud, but I'll tell you the number of offices that I walk into and hear the front desk speak to the patients and. Hi, what's your name? Is Unreal. So there's no better way to make a patient feel like a number than saying, hi, what's your name?So when you, again, look at your practice management software, they all have a place for a patient photo. So your check-in person, your greeting person, . patients typically come in on the hour, half an hour, somewhat staggered, but there's no reason that even if you have 15 patients coming in on the hour, they can't look at those patients and use some sort of deductive reasoning to see their name.Or I don't even care if the patient sits down in the waiting room after they've greeted them, and then they figure out whose name it is and check them in. Right. So there's really. To me, no excuse for that. And there's a number of strategies that you can use on that as well. But that is the first.Point. typically in the patient experience when they're coming into the office that you really wanna set the stage because you have been expecting them, right? If they canceled their appointment, you would've been mad at them, so now they're here, so be happy with them, right? So if we look at it like that, um, I think it starts to change, but, uh, it's also knowing how to speak to your patients, right?So anytime you're asking your patients, Do something. Obviously you're going to have those certain protocols that you have in place and anytime you're asking the patient to do something, they may not want to say. You only schedule your um, major procedures in the morning. . So add in the value of why that's important, not for you, for the patient, and then talk to them in that way.So say, Michael, uh, I know that you prefer later in the afternoon, but for this procedure, the doctor does it first thing in the morning. We don't double book at this time so you can have his full attention and we can get you in out here as soon as possible. Well, now you understand why that's necessary before you just understand that that doesn't work for your.right? So it's knowing how to add the value to the patient with what your. asking them to do. and then there's a lot that you can do to make the experience personal. Obviously adding in your chart notes, something that you spoke about the last time, and then following up on it the next time, that makes the patient feel that you do remember them.Um, and usually if you have the chart notes down, you can kind of trigger the memory on that. Um, one that I see a lot too is, uh, and I think this is very important for the. Is to prep the doctors that day with larger practices. Like, Hey, you, you have done an exam on this patient before You just met them one time.They're a little overdue, so it was eight months ago, so I'm not sure if you're going to remember them, but don't go in and reintroduce yourself. Right? Nothing worse than that. So, , make them aware, of the patients that they're not meeting . And the best way to do that again, is to have those structures and protocol in place, but then have that connection point and reference it from last time.So then once you kind of, and, and all of these things are harder to do of course, if you don't have your systems and protocol in place. But once you do, then you can really start to. Personalize it. You can do a lot of it with automation as well. Um, you're gonna put a personal touch on it, but even in your software, if you are talking to patients and they're expecting a baby, or they're getting married or graduating or retirement, there's a lot that you can do with that in the form of cards, emails following up the next time, and really just kind of connecting with that patient on the level of, Hey, well, Only, you know, we're really relationship in this way, but we really do care for you.Um, so I think that is major. And again, even if you approach contacting patients when they're overdue or due for treatment in a way of care, , and this is a team effort, and you relate it back to their chart notes. While I see the last time that you came in, doctor was concerned about this area, so he asked me to give you a call to follow up on that because we, we wanted to make sure we got that taken care of for you.So I think it's really about being intentional in the way you do things and realizing that. Um, it's a team effort. It's all going together. You need to be keeping good notes. You need to be referencing each other's notes, and you need to be follow up in that way, even stating, Hey, no, you canceled your appointment cuz you were sick or you feeling better?How's it going? Can we get you scheduled back in? referencing all those notes is it's just going to make the patient feel like they're not a number. they really. Care. So I think that is really key as well, on, um, retaining the patients. And then of course, if you do have a patient that decides to leave, make sure that you, you make them aware that you will miss them, right?Mm-hmm. so. And then a letter that you're saying, Hey, thank you for time with us. If anything in your future were to change, we would always love to have you back and extend that invitation and open the door. So if they were not happy with their new office, they can come back to your office, um, but without feeling embarrassed or, or like they shouldn't have left in the first place.Michael: Yeah. No, that's wonderful. if you could real quick, let us know, would this be really helpful in the morning huddles or like in a team meeting to make sure, like, let's make sure we're all cohesive here with, with our patients. Christa: Yeah, definitely. Um, you know, go over certain points in the morning huddles.There's a lot that you can do. And again, it's a team effort and it's just about being intentional. you may have a patient coming in and their spouse hasn't been in, in quite some time. Well, it's okay, you know, make sure you're not breaking any HIPAA laws obviously, but ask about that. and say their spouse is gonna go home and say, Hey, I was just at the dentist's office and they were asking about you because you, you haven't made an appointment in a while.So there's a lot that you can do internally too to kind of get those patients back on the books. But the morning huddle is the perfect place to kind of, um, prep for this, or even if, if a patient had a rough appointment the last time to really make sure that you make this experience. better, So be aware of those things and then if you do have a patient that has a long wait time or something, um, figure out a way that you can kind of remedy it so they can get back to that consistent experience and realize that that one time was the outlier.Michael: Awesome. Taken from the WikiIrving Janis identified three antecedent conditions to groupthink:: High group cohesiveness: Cohesiveness is the main factor that leads to groupthink. Groups that lack cohesiveness can of course make bad decisions, but they do not experience groupthink. In a cohesive group, members avoid speaking out against decisions, avoid arguing with others and work towards maintaining friendly relationships in the group. If cohesiveness gets to such a level that there are no longer disagreements between members, then the group is ripe for groupthink. Deindividuation: Group cohesiveness becomes more important than individual freedom of expression. Illusions of unanimity: Members perceive falsely that everyone agrees with the group's decision; silence is seen as consent. Janis noted that the unity of group members was a mere illusion. Members may disagree with the organization's decision, but go along with the group for many reasons, such as maintaining their group status and avoiding conflict with managers or workmates. Such members think that suggesting opinions contrary to others may lead to isolation from the group. Structural faults: The group is organized in ways that disrupt the communication of information, or the group carelessly makes decisions. Insulation of the group: This can promote the development of unique, inaccurate perspectives on issues the group is dealing with, which can then lead to faulty solutions to the problem. Lack of impartial leadership: Leaders control the group discussion, by planning what will be discussed, allowing only certain questions to be asked, and asking for the opinions of only certain people in the group. Closed-style leadership is when leaders announce their opinions on the issue before the group discusses the issue together. Open-style leadership is when leaders withhold their opinion until a later time in the discussion. Groups with a closed-style leader are more biased in their judgments, especially when members had a high degree of certainty. Lack of norms requiring methodological procedures. Homogeneity of members' social backgrounds and ideology. Situational context: Highly stressful external threats: High-stake decisions can create tension and anxiety; group members may cope with this stress in irrational ways. Group members may rationalize their decision by exaggerating the positive consequences and minimizing the possible negative consequences. In an attempt to minimize the stressful situation, the group decides quickly and allows little to no discussion or disagreement. Groups under high stress are more likely to make errors, lose focus of the ultimate goal, and use procedures that members know have not been effective in the past. Recent failures: These can lead to low self-esteem, resulting in agreement with the group for fear of being seen as wrong. Excessive difficulties in decision-making tasks. Time pressures: Group members are more concerned with efficiency and quick results than with quality and accuracy. Time pressures can also lead group members to overlook important information. Moral dilemmas. Although it is possible for a situation to contain all three of these factors, all three are not always present even when groupthink is occurring. Janis considered a high degree of cohesiveness to be the most important antecedent to producing groupthink, and always present when groupthink was occurring; however, he believed high cohesiveness would not always produce groupthink. A very cohesive group abides with all group norms, but whether or not groupthink arises is dependent on what the group norms are. If the group encourages individual dissent and alternative strategies to problem-solving, it is likely that groupthink will be avoided even in a highly cohesive group. This means that high cohesion will lead to groupthink only if one or both of the other antecedents is present, the situational context being slightly more likely than structural faults to produce groupthink.

Notes: Three actions for leaders in a perilous time: be exceedingly human. By that, I mean that you should demonstrate your concern for the very real fears and anxieties that your people are experiencing, not only professionally and economically, but socially and personally. Even though you don’t have definitive answers to all of their questions, don’t let that keep you from listening to them and empathizing with their fears. And, contrary to conventional wisdom, you should not be hesitant to share your own concerns with your people. They want to know that they can relate to you and that they are not alone in their concerns. be persistent. This is not a time to hold back. Send people updates and regular communication, even if there is not a lot of new information and the message is largely personal. No one will look back at this time and say, “my manager was so annoying with all the encouraging emails checking in on me.” When people are isolated, over-communication is more important than ever. be creative. Try new things. Call semi-regular video-conference meetings that allow employees to not only talk about work, but to share their experiences dealing with this situation. Have them share movies and games and other tools that they are finding to be helpful with their families and invite them to tell stories about what is going on in their worlds. Crises provide an opportunity for people to come to know one another and establish bonds that will endure long after the crisis is over. This is not a time to be efficient. It’s a time to be present with people.  Once they get that new sense of trust, then you can move on. Every company/family needs to be intentional about their thematic goal/rallying cry. Cohesiveness and innovation are the themes for The Table Group What we do during this time is going to be what people remember.  This is the window of opportunity. People would rather be criticized than ignored. The opposite of love is not hate. It's indifference. Pat is looking for that sense of “peace” that no matter what happens, we will be okay. (He tells a story about an NYC priest the night before he died “I”m not afraid.") When you help others, your fears go down. Idle time and worry is what makes fear rise. Advice for parenting teenagers right now -- "It's a time for grace, not discipline." How to establish a safe environment? Empower people to take risks.  When they stumble, it's okay. Failure = learning moment 2 biggest red flags of a bad teammate - what are the symptoms/ hardest things to overcome? Insecurity and selfishness Good teammates? "They take ownership of their mistakes and work to correct them." Must take ownership of it to improve. The Ideal Team Player -- Humble, Hungry, Smart. Podcast kali ini merupakan deskripsi riset yang dilaksanakan oleh Bapak Ade Muhammad yang minggu lalu baru saja menyelesaikan S3nya di SBM ITB. Berikut press releasenya Pada sidang terbuka tanggal 27 Februari 2020 di Gedung Annex ITB, Dr. Ir. Ade Muhammad, M.Han dikukuhkan menjadi Doktoral dengan predikat “Cum Laude” setelah mempertahankan disertasinya yang berjudul “System of Diagnostic Systems (SODS) and its application to the Cohesiveness of Indonesian National Security”. Sidang ini dipimpin oleh Prof Sudrajati Ratnaningtyas, kemudian team penguji yang terdiri dari; Dr. Pri Hermawan, Dr. Yunieta Anny Nainggolan dan pengamat militer nasional kondang yaitu Dr. Conni Rahakundini Bakrie. Bertindak sebagai Promotor adalah Prof. Dr. Ir. Utomo Sarjono Putro, M.Eng dan Co-Promoter Dr. Manahan Siallagan. Dr. Ir. Ade Muhammad, M.Han dalam disertasinya berusaha untuk memecahkan masalah pelik dimana sangat merongrong kohesivitas keamanan nasional Indonesia. Terganggunya kohesivitas ini kemudian berimplikasi pada kesiapan dan kesiagaan keamanan nasional pada ancaman, semisal rentannya pada serangan terrorisme. Masalah kohesivitas keamanan nasional ini belum pernah bisa diselesaikan secara optimum, meskipun pihak TNI dan POLRI telah melaksanakan berbagai strategi untuk menyelesaikan dan mencegahnya terjadi di masa depan. Dalam catatan riset, setidaknya 52 insiden, yang membawa korban jiwa setidaknya 6 nyawa, dengan 28 luka parah/ringan pada periode 1998-2019. Pada riset ini, dilakukan penggabungan yang dianggap sangat berani, dari dua mazhab keilmuan yaitu mazhab strategi yang dipimpin oleh Mintzberg dan mazhab sistem yang dipimpin oleh Jackson. Kedua mazhab ini kemudian difusikan sehingga saling melengkapi dan menghasilkan sebuah kerangka kerja yang sangat muktahir yaitu System of Diagnostic Systems (SODS). Sebagai hasilnya, SODS dan aplikasinya untuk solusi masalah kohesivitas keamanan nasional indonesia telah mendapatkan pengakuan internasional dari dua jurnal bergengsi dengan keeduanya memiliki level Q2 (International Journal of Trade and Global Markets/IJTGM dari Inderscience pada 2019 dan System Research and Behavioral Science/SRBS dari Wiley pada 2020, yang diasuh langsung oleh pemimpin mazhab System Thinking Michael C.Jackson, yang dilakukan modifikasi serta fusi dalam teori ini). Saat ini Dr. Ir. Ade Muhammad, M.Han dipercaya sebagai tenaga ahli Fraksi Partai Nasdem yang berkonsentrasi pada analisis pertahanan dan keamanan pada Komisi I DPR RI sejak 2019. Periode sebelumnya (2014-2019) dipercaya sebagai kepala tenaga ahli Prananda Surya Paloh, putra Ketua Umum Partai Nasdem Surya Dharma Paloh yang juga pemilik jaringan media, Media group. Sementara pendidikan sebelumnya adalah S1 sebagai sarjana teknik Aeronautika dari Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Dirgantara (sekarang Universitas Suryadarma) pada 1998, S2 sebagai Magister Pertahanan dari Program Magister Studi Pertahanan, ITB pada 2010 yang menyabet The Best thesis SAPPK ITB 2010 dan lulus dengan predikat Cum Laude.

However, when you’re just starting off, you gotta keep your expectations in check, as finding success in these realms takes far more work and time than you realize.Everyone wants the end results, but they don’t have the patience nor grit to put in the grind over time to tap into that success.If you’re a long-time listener, you know I’ll never sugar coat shit here. I don’t believe in fluff or telling you what I think you want to hear.You can’t just show up and put something into this world and expect people to buy it.Trust me, I’ve been there and have learned plenty of hard lessons.I spent 4 years building a clothing brand outside of college with my homie Dustin McLaughin aka DMAC aka Dusty Dink grassroots-style. We didn’t gain serious traction until year three.Sadly, long-term success wasn’t in the cards for us, but I learned a lot—it’s what spawned Perspective-Collective..Then two years into Perspective-Collective, I started slanging products on my own. I thought, because I had an Instagram audience of over 10k, that slanging 300 5x7” Change Your Perspective custom-lettered letterpress prints for less than $10 would be a breeze.I tied a meaningful story to it and built a whole launch around it including a dope, inspirational video DMac created for me...I’m still sitting on just under 100 of those left, and the majority of them I’ve gifted away to people.Selling your shit is hard work. It’s not impossible, but I feel there are solid guidelines and phases to work through in order to get to a point where people care enough to buy.Today’s guests have been in this creation game slanging their own knick-knacks and dope little trinkets for a hot minute now. They know how much time goes into gaining traction and the effort behind the scenes of running a business when everyone else just sees the fun of designing and prototyping through social media.I’m talking about my family over at Hellcats: a goods, accessories, and apparel brand ran by power duo Britt Reagan and hubby Clark Orr.All of their products are designed and packaged in-house in their Winter Park, FL. studio. The ability to reflect on ourselves, recognize where we can improve, and make adjustments. It’s important to have humility and be open to change for the better, which means facing our ignorance and flaws at times, which can be painful. Still, its nice to know we can train ourselves to embrace new ways of thinking to improve, which helps our relationships and our effectiveness in the workplace, at home, etc. The alternative is not reflecting and recognizing ways we can improve, which means we'll stay the same and likely make things worse for ourselves. If the goal is to improve, then this uncomfortable practice of reflection is part of the process. Part of what got me thinking about this more is realizing that if we document our ideas and we read, listen or watch it later, it can be uncomfortable because we are no longer the same person we were at the time we made it. Ideally, we have improved through experience, and we see the person we were at the time we documented. This podcast, for example - when re-listening at times, I've been able to pick up on areas I can improve, which means sometimes I'll hear myself say something I'm not too crazy about, I'll think oh man I need to re-think that one. It's an uncomfortable feeling to hear yourself say something you don't like. When this happens, I have a choice - I can keep a stubborn viewpoint and keep being that way, or I can face up to it and ask myself how I can improve moving forward. I'm learning to embrace those times even more because it will help make progress. Improving also includes pulling from other experiences and wisdom, which brings me to a concept I've thought about a bit, mentor/mentee relationship. We hear the term mentor during our careers and in our personal life. It's an important part of learning and increasing responsibility, and many times it's a necessary part of career progression. There is an element of trust in this relationship. We are looking to learn from a mentor as they pass along knowledge and experience. At times during a mentor/mentee relationship, I think it's important to take a step back and assess and evaluate the situation and relationship. I also think it's important to have other mentors with a good value structure that are not in the same environment. Having others to speak with and receive feedback gives a broader perspective and allows us to evaluate after gathering advice and insight. We have more information to cross-reference and come to conclusions ourselves. Without different perspectives, we can get caught up in an environment that reinforces the same views and beliefs over and over, and this can take over our logic and reasoning. We can become used to the same people and conversations, what is acceptable and what isn't, and not challenge our ideas. I think any good mentor would encourage seeking out other perspectives and advice from valuable sources. If they are against it, then maybe it's really time to reflect on the situation and relationship. If we don't seek out information from other sources, we become susceptible to what is called Groupthink, defined as a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an irrational or dysfunctional decision-making outcome. Cohesiveness, or the desire for cohesiveness, in a group that may produce a tendency among its members to agree at all costs. This causes the group to minimize conflict and reach a consensus decision without critical evaluation. We need to evaluate the ways we are getting our information. We can do this by gaining outside perspectives from other sources and making decisions based on the information we gather. We should be pulling from multiple sources and reflecting on what we learn. Thanks for joining me today for "A Little Walk with God." I'm your host Richard Agee. Last week we finished with “The Story” as we explored God's plan to restore us to that face to face relationship he enjoyed with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden before their act of disobedience that banished them from that paradise. God has been working ever since to bring us back to him and to teach us to live in community with each other and with him so we might share eternity with him in a new paradise he has created for all who follow him. Well, as we start something new this week, I thought about a devotional series I read a few weeks ago on integrity. That's really what God wants from us. To have integrity. To be genuine with him. But in our society today, I'm not sure we even know what integrity means anymore, much less practice it. So I want to take the next few weeks and explore what it means for us to have integrity. Let's start with David. He declared in Psalms 25:21, “May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope, Lord is in you.” If his understanding of integrity is such that it would protect him from something when he was running for his life from Saul's army, then I'd like to figure out what that integrity is because I sure need some protecting in this day and age. Satan is alive and well and wants to destroy my soul. Just like he wants to destroy yours. So what is integrity, then. The dictionary says integrity is, the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. Another definition is, the state of being whole and undivided. There are a lot of synonyms we could throw around to maybe help us get a handle on the word. Some like:  honesty, probity, rectitude, honor, good character, principle(s), ethics, morals, righteousness, morality, virtue, decency, fairness, scrupulousness, sincerity, truthfulness, trustworthiness. Or from that second definition things like unity, unification, coherence, cohesion, togetherness, solidarity. All of those sound good, but I'm not sure that's where David was going with this when he was talking to God about integrity. We too often fit our good character, principles, ethics, morals, and virtue into our societal code which may or may not be what God is looking for in us. I'm sure you've heard the term situational ethics thrown about more than once in the past few years. What's right depends on the current situation and circumstances. Well, does it? Is God that wishy-washy in his behavior that he changes his rules to fit our circumstances? I doubt it. David, in our eyes, had every right to defend himself against his accuser, Saul. He was falsely accused. God had already had Samuel anoint him as the next king to sit on the throne of Israel. Samuel had given Saul his pink slip from God. And twice God put Saul into David's hands, when he relieved himself in a cave and David was close enough to cut off part of his coat. And against when the whole came around Saul slept and David went into the camp and took Saul's sword and spear. But David was a man of integrity, not someone who adhered to the idea of situational ethics. His integrity kept him on the run instead of in the comfort of the palace. Was that protection? David thought so. Does fair and decent fit the bill? It depends on who you talk to. Who is to say what is fair. Job didn't think life was fair when he lost everything but his nagging wife and three friends that told him what a sinner he was. We look at the narrative and look up at God and say the same thing. “God, how is it fair to bring such calamity on such a righteous man?” Was it fair for the Europeans to blast their way through the native Indians, cut down their forests, deplete their hunting grounds, pollute their rivers and streams, and turn this continent into a new country? They certainly didn't think so, but their European victors did. And if history had not played out as it did, what would our country be like today? Would we still be living in animal skin huts and trying to forage for deer and buffalo meat for supper? Probably not, but the country would be far different since the Europeans would not have had the land to forge the pioneer spirit that has forged us into the nation we have become. Has it been fair to every group? No. Will it ever be? Not as long as people are involved in the process. Marx and Stalin thought they could make a fair system work under communist rule. It lasted about 70 years until those that worked hard so that the fruits of their labor went to those that chose not to work so hard. Then no one worked very hard and the Soviet Union finally collapsed. Socialism and communism only work if every single person in the system are highly motivated to give their best to the system. We know humans don't operate that way because we are inherently selfish. So governments of any flavor are never fair because people are not fair. Well, what about that decency rule? If you're old enough, you remember the National Geographic documentaries of newly found tribes in Africa and South America where no one wore clothes. Were they decent? To them they were. To us they were far from it. But even in our society, we have extreme views of what people call decent. Laws can't dictate decency, though we try. So decency is out of the question if we want to try to define integrity by that norm. How about ethics? I've been to countries where it was impolite to tell a guest something that might hurt their feelings, so lying was okay if you knew the facts would be disturbing. Were they ethical? In their society, absolutely. For me and my colleagues, we were more than frustrated when the facts were discovered later. But as guests around their table drinking tea, everyone needed to be all smiles so were we told what they thought we wanted to hear. Were they wrong? To them it was quite ethical. We were the crazy Americans with stupid ideas. I could go on down the list of synonyms and pick them apart and find that none of them describe what David saw as protection against his enemies. But I think the second definition will give us some clues about the integrity David and God have in mind when we think about integrity in spiritual terms. Think back on our journey through God's word over the last eight months. In God's upper story, he desperately wants to have us return to him in an intimate face to face relationship. He wants to restore that oneness Adam and Eve enjoyed before the fall. So what was that second definition again? Integrity is the state of being whole and undivided. But when Adam and Eve were banished from the garden, a piece of them went missing - the presence of God in their life. They walked with him face to face until they disobeyed. But because of their disobedience, God's truth, his integrity, his holiness demanded their sin be put away from his presence. So they lost his presence in their life. Jesus talked over and over about unity among the disciples. He talked about how others would know they belonged to him, by their love for each other. He talked about the oneness between him and the father and that same unity could happen between him and us. Jesus mentored his disciples on togetherness. How to break bread with each other and share their faith. He taught them to overlook that faults and dwell on the spirit that God forgives when we ask him. Jesus talked about a kingdom that is open to anyone who believes. That kingdom is not bound by race or color or nationality. It is bound by faith. By unity. By oneness. Cohesiveness in believing in the one name above all names. Jesus, the Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. I kind of think if David wrote this psalm in twenty-first century vernacular he might say, “God, I'm going to do my best to stick to you like glue. I know that if I do that, you've got my back. I don't need to worry about the things that go on around me because you're God and I'm not. But together I can make it because you can't fail. I can't make it on my own, but my hope, my peace, my joy, my comfort, my assurance is in the one I put my faith in and that's you, Lord.” Integrity. It's not about me or what I think is right or wrong. It's not about what society thinks is right or wrong, good or bad. I'm not even sure it's about any in that long list of synonyms that focus on personal character. I think integrity has everything to do with how close I can squeeze up to God and let him carry me through this life wherever he wants to take me. Doing with me whatever he wants to do. Teaching me whatever he wants to teach me. Molding me into the likeness of his son day by day as I obey his voice as he whispers in my ear. How do you define integrity?
