Veteran of the film industry Roger Hall joins us for a chat about his life in the movies. As a Production Designer he has a pretty incredible filmography starting back in the 1960's. His first feature film was multiple Oscar winner 'Chariots Of Fire', for which he received a BAFTA nomination, followed by 'White Mischief', 'Power of One', 'Dreamchild', and many others. He received an Emmy nomination for 'Alice In Wonderland', collected an Emmy award for 'Merlin' and received both BAFTA and Emmy awards for 'Gullivers Travels'. We are back with this version of the first part of the epic that is Gulliver's Travels! Did you know that Gullivers Travels was written by an Irishman, and an Irish priest at that! Did you also know that it was first published all the way back in 1726?! That makes my head hurt! The story has been retold in various versions thousands upon thousands of times over the years, and remains a firm favourite with kids and adults alike. It is a real favourite of mine because of the wonderous 6 inch high Lilliputians Gulliver encounters along with their teeny tiny cows- but you'll have to listen to the story to find out more!!Please Subscribe, rate and review!Bonus Material available weekly on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/landofnodlearning?fan_landing=trueJoin us on Instagram!https://www.instagram.com/landofnodlearningJoin our Facebook page!https://www.facebook.com/landofnodlearningListen on Apple podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/land-of-nod-kids-stories/id1539956312Listen on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/69uOzUlxEwNaoCnkMV92OUListen on Castboxhttps://castbox.fm/channel/Land-of-Nod-%7C-Kid's-stories-id3807844?country=ieSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/landofnodlearning?fan_landing=true) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This particular film is this podcast's second Gulliver's Travels, the first animated telling of the story, and the second American feature-length animated film. It's also one of two feature films by the Fleischer Bros, better known for Betty Boop and Popeye. This movie begs direct comparison to Disney's Snow White, since it was made to directly compete within the market Disney's movie had just created. How does it compare? And how does it compare to the Gulliver's Travels from nearly 40 years later? Is this one worth a watch, or is it best left forgotten? We've arrived at our first Gulliver's Travels movie, but it certainly won't be the last. This is a strange one from 1977 featuring Richard Harris and cartoon Lilliputians. The budget is clearly low, and the video quality on the Youtube copy we watch is poor, but... does the movie hold up anyway? Is this one of the better versions of this story, or is this one best left to obscurity? Best-selling historical novelist Lauren Chater speaks with Kathryn Ryan about re-imagining Gulliver's long-suffering wife, Mary, who made her own luck while he was in Lilliput. In what could be described as a sequel to Swift's classic Gulliver's Travels, Lauren brings to life the experiences of 18th century women whose husbands were prone to taking off on years' long fantastic journeys overseas. In Lauren's version Gulliver is presumed dead but returns full of tales of being tied down by little people. Worse, his reappearance threatens Mary's newly-found independence.

BackTrekking returns again to look back at the real-world inspirations of classic Trek episodes! It's the eternal debate, the championship bout for all the credits. . . Star Wars vs. Star Trek: which is better? One seems more suited to conflict; it's literally got "war" in its title. The other's name suggests perhaps a performance fleece and one of those water things you carry on your back with the straw that runs up your sleeve. Assuming you're not mispronouncing it as "track", that is. One conjures images of screaming fans under a sea of waving, day-glo lightsabers, the other a vision of William Shatner yelling at an assemblage of sad men in pointed ears. Put all my money on the 'wars, please. The reality is somewhat more complicated. Trek incontrovertibly arrived first, beaming onto American TV screens on September 8th, 1966 (September 6th, if you were lucky enough to be Canadian). Star Wars premiered on May 25, 1977, fizzling out of some theaters completely before returning several weeks later on a wave of word-of-mouth positivity. Both franchises are clearly indebted to earlier properties. Star Wars famously began life as George Lucas's desire to do a Flash Gordon-esque space adventure after he lost out on directing the genuine article. Star Trek was preceded by space travel shows and even genre-themed social commentary series, but draws most of its inspiration from Horatio Hornblower novels and Gulliver's Travels (weirdly). Star Trek influenced Star Wars, full stop. George Lucas has said as much, although it was probably within earshot of Gene Roddenberry and its greatest influence may have been Lucas saying "Well, I don't want to do *that*." Star Wars, in turn, influenced Star Trek by making $220 million in its initial box office run (almost $900 million in 2020 bucks). Screw Star Trek: Phase II; Trek was going back to theaters with the entire original cast intact and it was going to be gritty this time! Colors would be drab, the technology more crunchy, two people would be melted by the friendly transporter. Star Trek: The Motion Picture would go on to make $139 million after spending 5 times the budget of Star Wars, which would effectively end Roddenberry's involvement with the franchise until the development of The Next Generation 8 years later. He'd still hang around but be mostly ignored as Trek cinema continued to chase Star Wars and its ever-increasing returns. It wasn't until 1986, when Star Wars had left the cinematic field, that Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home would earn $133 million, 6 times its budget, proving definitively that a Star Trek film can be a runaway success as long as George Lucas is counting money instead of making movies. So who wins? Which is superior: Star Wars or Star Trek? Well, the show isn't called BackWarsing . . . you figure it out.On this episode, we talk about the Star Wars and Star Trek and what defines them, the surprising artistry of the original trilogy, the perfect casting of Star Wars, the series's light-touch spirituality, the magnetic momentum of the narrative, how TMP served as a template for future Trek films, the breathtaking mise-en-scene of V'ger, the film's theme of self-examination, and staying close to your roots. We also discuss the bone-headed changes of the Special Editions, whether or not we live on a TOS planet-of-the-week, how George Lucas is the biggest Star Wars fan, having too many chores to Antifa, laser sword-fighting a space wizard, editing Wookiepedia, vibe check on Vader, googling "the motion picture", turning Spock off and on again, neck pinch acting, V'ger's info was boring, and the etiquette of starship interaction.Who's behind this Maclunkey?Get Star Wars and Star Trek: The Motion Picture on Blu-ray!https://amzn.to/3cUod4Chttps://amzn.to/2yc39bcJoin us in the Just Enough Trope Discord!https://discord.gg/EAx5VGXTweet at the show or your hosts with your suggestions for future episodes!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkinghttp://www.twitter.com/ka1ibanhttp://www.twitter.com/gooeyfameCheck out the other shows on the Just Enough Trope network!http://www.justenoughtrope.comTheme: Disco Medusae Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

There once was a podcast on history. And why they still did it's a mystery. This week's about verse, so Sam's picked the worst. And Tom's done Catullus for his story. Yes, it's poetry week! Tom kicks us off with a look at the absolutely filthy mind of the famed Roman poet Catullus. Telling your rival to quite literally suck your d**k has never sounded so beautiful. Next, Sam takes us on a tour of the poets and poems widely believed to be the worst in the English language: The Tay Bridge Disaster by William McGonagall, A Tragedy by Theophile Marzials, and On Visiting Westminster Abbey by Amanda McKittrick Ros. Three terrible poems, topped by a very funny, very rude one from Gulliver's Travels author, Jonathan Swift. Subscribe and listen to us! Welcome back to another fun filled episode from those irascible Nerds we all look forward to each week. Oh, and what a show we have for you all, let me tell you. What, hurry up you say, well then. First up we have DJ giving us an update on the Marvel movies failing to impress and the arguments have continued. This week we have some delusional moron, believe me you will agree that they are a moron when you hear what they have done. Oh right, well this delusional moron says what has got to be the dumbest thing and the biggest lie in history. It sets Buck off like all the fireworks for New Year’s Eve in one go. My goodness, he really tears into this one like nothing before. If you listen in just to hear him rant about some misguided fool then you will love this one, plus you might learn a few new insults. Next up, after he catches his breathe Buck tells us about how some scientists believe they have figured out how to identify the existence of Wormholes. That’s right we said Wormholes. Those supposed mythical sci-fi tunnels through time and space purportedly linking us to the farthest reaches of the universe? Multiverse? Dimensional gateways? Well who knows, the gravity is more then we can fathom at this time. But it is something to do with that….Ahh, almost had me there. You will have to listen in to hear what and how the physicists think they can determine whether or not a wormhole exists. Then we move to a legendary tale for inspiration in what we have crappily dubbed “A Tale of Two Shitties!” Sorry, couldn’t resist the sloppy pun, messy though it is, haha, that just plopped out. Anyway, we look at two epically bad mistakes from two different games studios and have a laugh and cry at the stupidity and hubris involved. These tales of woe and calamity are similar but different, and for one we will cheer and hope. The other we will jeer and poke, fun of naturally. Now, since we have you so excited to know this tale of misfortune we invite ye to listen further to the tale in yonder episode. Finishing off as always with the regular shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and special events of interest. We also wish to invite you all to come join us at Supanova in Brisbane on Saturday 9th November. We do not have the faintest idea of which table we will be at, other than it is the TNC productions booth. So come along and say hi, join us in our game and meet the goofballs that are the Nerds. As always take care of yourselves, look out for each other and stay hydrated.EPISODE NOTES:Scorsese update and The Mandalorian details - https://collider.com/martin-scorsese-marvel-movies-theyre-a-new-art-form/ - https://boundingintocomics.com/2019/10/24/jon-favreau-on-star-wars-and-the-mandalorian-through-stories-we-express-our-values-to-the-next-generation/How to find a wormhole- https://www.technology.org/2019/10/28/how-to-spot-a-wormhole-if-they-exist/- https://journals.aps.org/prd/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevD.100.083513A Tale of Two Shitties- https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-01-28-the-fall-of-swedish-game-wonder-starbreeze- https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2019/10/24/fallout-76s-premium-private-servers-are-not-private-its-scrap-box-is-deleting-scrap/#4999a5257386Games currently playingProfessor – Call of Duty: WWII - https://store.steampowered.com/app/476600/Call_of_Duty_WWII/Rating – 7/10Buck – Call of Duty: WWII - https://store.steampowered.com/app/476600/Call_of_Duty_WWII/Rating – 8/10DJ- Warframe - https://www.warframe.com/landingRating - 3.5/5Other topics discussedDisney CEO Bob Iger responds to Martin Scorsese and Francis Coppola’s comments- https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/2019/10/disney-ceo-bob-iger-response-scorsese-coppola-marvel-commentsDisney buys Marvel Entertainment for $4 Billion- https://money.cnn.com/2009/08/31/news/companies/disney_marvel/Pirate of the Caribbean (Disneyland tourist attraction)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirates_of_the_Caribbean_(attraction)Game of Thrones directing duo David Benioff and Dan Weiss leave Star Wars for a $250 million Netflix deal- https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/why-star-wars-didnt-work-game-thrones-duo-1250798Captain Planet and the Planeteers (1990 TV series)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Planet_and_the_PlaneteersRadio signals from Jupiter could aid in the search for extraterrestrial life- https://scitechdaily.com/radio-signals-jupiter-aid-search-extraterrestrial-life-moon/Speed of radio waves traveling through space- http://www.qrg.northwestern.edu/projects/vss/docs/Communications/2-why-does-it-take-so-long.htmlDistance from Earth to Jupiter through Light or Radio- https://pages.uoregon.edu/jimbrau/astr121/Notes/Jupiter/jupiterradio.htmlWormholes in relation to Time Travel- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormhole#Time_travelFacts about Black Holes- https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/seuforum/bh_whatare.htmBobby Vinton – Mr Lonely- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djU4Lq_5EaMStarbreeze Studios (Swedish video game developer and publisher based in Stockholm.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starbreeze_StudiosThe Walking Dead (episodic, graphic adventure video game series developed and published by Telltale Games and Skybound Games, based on The Walking Dead comic book series.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Walking_Dead_(video_game_series)Death & Revival of Telltale Games- https://au.ign.com/articles/2019/08/28/telltale-games-shut-down-and-revival-explainedThe Saboteur (Playstation Game)- https://www.playstation.com/en-au/games/the-saboteur-ps3/WARSAW (PC Game)- https://store.steampowered.com/app/1026420/WARSAW/Heston Blumenthal’s rocket explosion- https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/mar/05/heston-blumenthal-chef-cooks-astronaut-tim-peakeShoutouts27 Oct 1962 - Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov saved the world, the Russian naval officer who, refused to fire a nuclear torpedo at an American aircraft carrier, thus averting the probability of a third world war and thermo-nuclear destruction across the planet. Colson Whitehead talks about his novel The Underground Railroad with James Naughtie and readers The novel is a devastating and imaginative account of a young slave's bid for freedom from a brutal Georgian plantation in the American South. All the slaves lead a hellish existence, but Cora has it worse than most; she is an outcast among the slaves and as she approaches womanhood is at greater risk of abuse from the owners. When Caesar, a slave recently arrived from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to escape to the North Colson Whitehead explains how the history of the Underground Railroad is taught in American schools, although it's a metaphor for the escape networks that ran in the antebellum South, as a child he understood it was real. so in the novel the idea assumes a physical form: a dilapidated boxcar pulled along subterranean tracks by a steam locomotive, picking up fugitives wherever it can At each stop on her journey, Cora encounters a different world, where she must overcome obstacles as she makes her way to true freedom; reflecting, Colson says, the epic journeys from Homer and also Gulliver's Travels. And as Colson Whitehead recreates the unique terrors for black people in the pre-Civil War era, the novel weaves the saga of America, from the brutal importation of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day The Underground Railroad won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, a place on Obama’s summer reading list, and was included in Oprah's book club. Gulliver’s Travels (1726) may indeed be the “goofiest book that was ever written,” which is why it’s so fun to talk about! We get into all the nitty-gritty of Jonathan Swift’s scathing, sprawling, scatalogical satire -- its historical contexts, its politics that range from pretty good (empire is bad!) to terrible (it thinks women’s bodies are gross), and how its horses seem like they’re probably murderous eugenicists. Also, just FYI for a certain kind of tankie -- satire need not be some self-indulgent bourgeois form of nonpolitics. We read the Oxford edition edited by Claude Rawson with explanatory notes by Ian Higgins. For a transhistorical study that situates the concepts Gulliver is working through in the long history of European empire, we recommend Rawson’s God, Gulliver, and Genocide: Barbarism and the European Imagination, 1492-1945.
