For many of us who grew up in the the 90s, Julia Stiles was an integral part of our coming of age. Her portrayal of the clever, acerbic Kat in 10 Things I Hate About You was a radical reinvention of the blonde teenage female rom-com lead. Her roles in Save The Last Dance and Mona Lisa Smile spoke to our adolescent feminist awakenings and catapulted Stiles to stardom. And, just like the heroines she played, Stiles chose to do things a bit differently. At the height of her teenage fame, she went to study English at Columbia University, continuing to act throughout her degree, most notably in the first of four Jason Bourne films. Her latest project is her directorial debut - the feature film, Wish You Were Here, which Stiles also produced and co-wrote. As a mother of three, Stiles said that her parenting informed her ability to direct. Today's guest is a trailblazer in the world of film and makeup artistry—John Caglione Jr. has been at the forefront of transforming the way we look at characters in film through makeup and prosthetics. His career spans decades, and his work has left an unforgettable mark on some of Hollywood's most iconic films. From behind the scenes of Saturday Night Live to winning an Oscar for the 1990 film “Dick Tracy”, John has created iconic looks on equally iconic characters. Other films John has worked on include Martin Scorcese's The Departed, American Gangster, Mona Lisa Smile and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. His most famous work is perhaps his make-up on Heath Ledger's psychopathic Joker in the Award-Winning Box Office smash “The Dark Knight” released in 2008. On today's episode, John will be discussing his early years working on a SNL as well as being under the mentorship of legendary make-up artist Dick Smith, working with once-in-a-generation talents like Al Pacino and of course Heath Ledger, as well as detailing behind the scenes tales surrounding his process as a make-up artist.John Caglione Jr. - https://www.johncaglionejr.net/Daniel's Book "Breanne 1975" - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Breanne-1975-Daniel-Heaphy/dp/1804392030Connect with Daniel on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/d.heaphymedia/Connect with Daniel on Facebook - https://m.facebook.com/100067449105174/Connect with Daniel on LinkedIn - https://ie.linkedin.com/in/daniel-heaphy-4984381a3Daniel on IMDB - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm13256427/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_1_nm_7_q_DANIEL%2520HEAPHYEmail - creativelymepodcast@gmail.com“Creatively Me” Theme Music by Bukky - https://open.spotify.com/artist/1v7rqTLaVA3Ce6Q9R98dSq

LOOK OUT! It’s only Films To Be Buried With! Join your host Brett Goldstein as he talks life, death, love and the universe with the iconic and massively prolific actor and director JULIA STILES! A really lovely episode where we find Julia on top form, with a perfect balance of funny and emotional (with a beautiful reaction to being informed of her demise, as show tradition dictates). Julia's been putting in serious work through the years, not least with 'Wish You Were Here', which she directed and goes into detail on. Of course she and Brett go into all sorts of terrain, including said film direction and being a driver as opposed to passenger, behind the scenes process, not being all the way out in the open, line readings ("Just do it happier!"), doing your own stunts at a younger age, growing up in New York, and good old fashioned fronting. Wonderful. ENJOY! Oh - stick around for added voicenotes at the end... "Mona Lisa Smile" is a universal film that aimed towards people who thnk they have their futures written in stone. A film directed by Mike Newell, stars Julia Roberts as this free-spirited teacher who travels over to the east coast to teach at an institution where women are guided to be submissive wives/partners. This was set in the mid-'50s. I never really focused on Roberts in films but this one really swept me to a point. I love her character as Katherine Ann Watson. She doesn't let anyone really dictate her life and style. The film is not about style but about how to hold on to your own and that you're not confined anywhere especially if you have personal goals set. I did like that they did a good job balancing the principle characters' dilemmas which is difficult to do in screenwriting, period. The plot is all right but I didn't like how they tackled it where it was an examination of the women in the film rather than playing high stakes. I didn't mind how it played out for Roberts' character but in connection to the other characters that support her morals & goals as a film, was weak and needed more work to established.Three out of four tokes.

Welcome back to a new school year and another episode of the The Video Store Podcast. Hope you've gathered your school supplies and movie rentals for back-to-school time. First up is a horror film that will remind you that no matter how tough your school might be, it could always be worse. It's 1977's Suspiria directed by Dario Argento. This classic film is the first in his Three Mothers trilogy. It's one of those films that shows just how scary going to school can be. There's horror, there's drama, but the good news is, your school probably isn't run by witches. With an iconic score by Goblin and incredible sound editing, Suspiria is a film that keeps you coming back every school year. The second film on our list this week is the Academy Award-nominated and winning film, Dead Poets Society from 1989. This film will have you seizing the day and standing on your desk shouting “Oh Captain, my Captain!” by the end. The film also focuses on the pressures young men face to have “success” and to suppress emotions back in 1959, and honestly, still today. It's a timeless classic that sets the mood for back to school. The third film on our list pairs well with our second—Mona Lisa Smile from 2003. While the film is sometimes called Dead Poets Society with girls, I think that undercuts the film. While yes, there are similarities, Mona Lisa Smile focuses on the pressures facing women in the early 50s, rather than men. Both perspectives are valuable, making it a great double bill with the previous film. Look for a cameo from singer Tori Amos in this one.The last film in our show this week is the 1985 comedy, Real Genius directed by Martha Coolidge. Starring Val Kilmer, Gabriel Jarret, William Atherton, Robert Prescott, and Michelle Meyrink, Real Genius is about some college students, including a child prodigy, who find out their school project is actually an illegal government project. Make some popcorn for this one. You'll be glad you did. We hope these selections will help you have a great start to the school year. Here's hoping your school year is filled with great teachers, great friends, plenty of popcorn, and 100% less murder than in Suspiria. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Julia Roberts was one of the dominant Hollywood stars for a good twenty-year period. From her breakout role in 1988's Mystic Pizza, Roberts skyrocketed to the top of the A-list when she starred opposite Richard Gere in Garry Marshall's Pretty Woman. An unlikely Cinderella story about an escort that falls in love with a high-powered executive, it's a movie that is definitely a Hollywood fairytale, but one that a lot of people loved in 1990, with it being one of the year's top-grossing movies. From there, Roberts made a string of hits, including Flatliners, The Pelican Brief, My Best Friend's Wedding, Notting Hill and many more, but respect in more heavy vehicles eluded her. Movies like Mary Reilly and Michael Collins were embarrassing for how miscast she was, and for awhile, it looked like she would be stuck doing lightweight but highly profitable rom coms. However, that changed in 2000 when she played the lead in Steven Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich. Based on a true story, the movie finally won her the Academy Award that had long eluded her. It earned her serious cred, and her fame took on a whole new dimension, with roles in Oceans' Eleven, Mona Lisa Smile and Eat Pray Love all big successes. Yet, as the business began to change, emphasizing tentpole movies, Roberts seemed to struggle more than contemporaries like Sandra Bullock to find her place. Eventually, she made a move into TV Prime Video's Homecoming. Still, it's notable how low-key the release of a show like Gaslit was despite the names involved. There was a time when Julia Roberts doing a TV series would have been an event.
In what is one of many unexpected moves, Russian President Vladimir Putin interrupted the afternoon programmes on the telly to inform his countrymen that he had just sacked the entire Russian Parliament mere weeks after he was elected for a second term as President! In Australia Qantas launched it's budget airline, Jetstar with fares from Sydney to Melbourne as low as 60 bucks! Who cares about legroom and checked baggage with those 2004 prices?!?!?Sadly there were more terror attacks taking place this time 20 years ago, this time in the Phillipines, where lots of cultures and beliefs co-exist. Superferry 14 was bombed en route form Manilla to Bacolod City resulting in the deaths of 116 people and many others injutred or missing as they leapt from the burning ship into the ocean. We have some terrible music this week thanks to the band Busted who's commit a crime agains music with their UK number one song 'Who's David?'. Thankfully JC Chasez from NSync releases his surprisingly good and diverse solo album to make up for it. In the middle of all that we had Kids Bop 5, a roundup of pop hits performed with kids released... Let's just say the son choices are questionable at best and at their worst, down right inappropriate. In entertainment Julia Roberts stars in Mona Lisa Smile with Kirsten Dunst and Julia Stiles and Ben Affleck picks up the Golden Raspberry for his flop with Jennifer Lopez, Gigli. Plus we had the final episode of Sex and The City airing on HBO...There's a little bit more too if you care to listen! Polarizing Movies 100 is in session and today's lesson comes from Mona Lisa Smile, where Julia Roberts teaches us to consider a polarizing movie from 2003 featuring a host of up and coming actors and actresses. We revel in the cast and ache for better direction as we hash out discourse from audiences and critics.
Mona Lisa Smile focuses on an all-girls college in the '50s and to help us guide us through there is Ethan's partner, Lindsay. We picked this movie having literally no knowledge of what it's about. Just the title of the film is enough to pique our curiosity. Is Mona Lisa actually in this movie??? Well, other famous artist's works do show up, but none of the characters are in the film. What does show up is the overwhelming force of patriarchal norms that plague what should be a liberal all-girls school. Is the movie as memorable as its title though?Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-other-half/exclusive-content

As we begin a round of personal picks, Matt has chosen a genre the likes of which we haven't glimpsed in many a year, we take you back to 2003 with Mona Lisa Smile. Featuring an incredibly stacked cast including Julia Roberts, Julia Stiles, Kristen Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Marcia Gay Harden, Mona Lisa Smile follows the story of Katherine Ann Watson, a feminist teacher who studied at UCLA graduate school and in 1953 left her boyfriend behind in Los Angeles, California to teach at Wellesley College, a conservative women's private liberal arts college in Massachusetts, United States. IN A WORLD THAT TOLD THEM HOW TO THINK, SHE SHOWED THEM HOW TO LIVE Will Cass, James and Matt find inspiration in this art history teacher? Will be standing on our desks saying O Katherine, my Katherine? Or is this a case of Mona Lisa Frown?
For the bright young ladies of Wellesley College, their time at university may have more to do with finding the man of their dreams than chasing dreams of their own. Featuring one of the most empowering performances by the one and only Julia Roberts, ”Mona Lisa Smile” challenges the dominant culture in the movie's 1950s landscape. Joined by comedian and podcaster, Cat Cohen, the two break down Roberts' portrayal of this new subversive art history teacher who has a natural disdain for the girls' conditioning. Undoubtedly, “In a world that told them how to think, she showed them how to live.” This Roberts' classic embodies her effortless poise and effect on audiences with just a smile.
