Actor Rupert Hill was a very high functioning and pleasant drinker who could hide his alcoholism behind a successful career as an actor and publican which also helped fuel the denial. Over decades, Rupert's drinking became more and more unstainable - he found himself wanting a drink before going on stage and even in the middle of the night. Rupert decided to announce that he was sober on social media and has had the word "FREE" tatooed on the wrist of his drinking hand as a reminder to never go back. Rupert explains his slow decline into alcoholism and how and why he got sober - finding solace outside 12 step fellowship, self-help & gaining knowledge. Det är motsatsernas matvara och en symbol för det yttersta. Anna Thulin har vispat ihop en essä om äggets betydelse för människan. Se gulan, hur den svävar i dimvitt hölje. Att äta eller inte äta ägg, det är frågan. Å ena sidan, skafferiets främsta basvara, fulländad i sin enkelhet. Å andra sidan, är det ett potentiellt liv som fräser där nere i stekpannan? Jag minns hur jag en gång fick en uppenbarelse på en brits med prassligt sjukhuspapper under ryggen. På den gråkorniga skärmen syntes vita rundlar som tycktes simma runt i en grynig massa. Mina ägg. Jag var en äggbärande människa. Det föreföll absurt och gör det fortfarande. Vi talar om fabriker som äggproducenter, när de snarare är förpackningsproducenter En gång var moderskapet mystiskt och heligt, ja, exakt hur barn blev till var något oklart. Nog visste man att det krävde en avklädd akt, men själva fröet till en ny människa såddes av en högre makt. Nu har vetskapen klätt av mystiken och vi vet exakt vad som sker när spermie möter ägg, och samtidigt känns tillblivandet mer kliniskt och sterilt än någonsin. Äggen kan sugas ut och injiceras och sättas tillbaka, som om kroppen bara var dess behållare. Till och med orden känns abstrakta – fertilitetsappar, ägglossningstester – för att mäta den lilla, lilla luckan då man har störst chans att bli gravid. Vad betyder det när vi kommer så långt bort från en företeelses uppkomst att den förlorar sin ursprungliga mening? Det gäller kroppen och det gäller mat, i högsta grad. Människor har ätit ägg från alla möjliga sorters djur, men det är först under de senaste århundraden som ägget blivit synonymt med hönor och massproduktion. I och med industrialiseringen har också äggets betydelse förändrats: från något exklusivt och andligt, till mer folkligt och sekulärt. Det har gått så långt att vi tycks glömma bort vart ägget faktiskt kommer från. Vi talar om fabriker som äggproducenter, när de snarare är förpackningsproducenter, som journalisten Mats Ekdahl påpekar i sin utmärkta matmonografi ”Ägget”. Hönan är ju den som producerar. Vår viktigaste basvara är egentligen en fråga om stöld. Till ytan hård och bräcklig, inuti mjuk och samtidigt fyllig. Äggets inneboende motsatser gör att den passar väl som litterär symbol. Som i Jonathan Swifts roman ”Gullivers resor”. Där krigar landet Lilliput mot landet Blefuscu om hur man bäst slår sönder ett hårdkokt ägg, från den trubbiga eller den spetsiga sidan? Det finns inget mellanting, du är antingen med det ena eller det andra laget. I romanen sägs kejsarens farfar ha råkat skära sig i fingret en gång som barn, och därför är det numer förbjudet för ”trubbändarna” att skära från den spetsiga änden. ”Man har beräknat att elvatusen personer vid olika tillfällen hellre underkastar sig döden än att slå hål i den spetsiga änden”, skriver Jonathan Swift. Och fortsätter: ”Många hundra tjocka böcker har skrivits om denna strid, men trubbändarnas skrifter är sedan länge förbjudna.” Handlade det egentligen om ägg? Nej, såklart inte, lika lite som Swift i en annan essä förespråkade att man skulle äta barn. Han använde sig av satir och sagans form för att kritisera 1600-talets politiska och religösa ledare, och särskilt det engelska förtrycket av Irland. Han ville visa att dåtidens politiska strider var lika banala som frågan om vilken ände man skulle äta ett ägg. Kanske förtjänar historien lyftas fram idag igen? För visst tycks det finnas en hel del trubbätare och spetsätare bland dagens debattörer och Twitterriddare. Förutom romaner finns det otalig konst som hämtat inspiration från ägget. Kanske för att dess klassiska form känns tidlös, som i fallet med Arne Jacobsens fåtölj och Carl Fabergés juvelägg åt den ryska tsaren. Tidlös, ja, samtidigt som äggen påminner om tidens gång. George Orwell, berömd för romanen ”Djurfarmen”, förde en dagbok över hur hans egna hönor värpte. Det var innan han slagit igenom som författare och han delvis försörjde sig som hönsfarmare. Den 30 mars 1940 skriver han: ”19 ägg. Totalt den här veckan: 120 (på 25 hönor – förmodligen rekord).” Ägg-dagboken måste ha varit en hållpunkt i tillvaron, ett sätt att mäta vardagen och vad den gett. Orwell räknade inte bara verkliga ägg, utan lät dem också få en betydande roll i ”Djurfarmen”, en allegorisk roman och kritik av stalinismen. Där blir äggen ett medel för motstånd, när hönorna bestämmer sig för att göra uppror mot ledargrisen. Det gör dem genom att förstöra sina egna ägg, istället för att tvingas ge bort dem och låta dem säljas vidare till människorna. Inte sällan beskrivs kranier som blanka äggskal i litteraturen. Kanske är det inte alltid ägget i sig som inspirerar, utan vad det representerar. En övergång från ett embryo till ett liv, från intet till ett något. En tillblivelse. Världsägget återfinns i många religioner och symboliserar universums skapelse. Ibland vilar det i vatten, ibland kläcks det utanför tid och rum. Ena halvan blir himmel och den andra halvan är jord. Visst framstår det som magiskt? Först var där ingenting, lika tomt som äggets vita, och ur den frånvaron uppstår livet och blir dess motsats. Men symbolen är inte mer magisk än att den också håller med modern vetenskap – Big Bang som slår sönder stillheten och livet bryter fram, yrvaket rufsigt och på ostadiga ben. Hur ska vi då tolka det hela och oförstörda ägget? Som en symbol för döden? Se hur den vilar där i handen – kall, livlös och sluten – i perfekt symmetri. Det finns något dödligt med perfektionen, eftersom den inte lämnar utrymme för skapande och förändring. Himlen måste vara halvfärdig, med poeten Tomas Tranströmers ord. Ja, till ytan kanske ägget är slutet och påminner om döden. Inte sällan beskrivs kranier som blanka äggskal i litteraturen. Men för de flesta är nog ägget förknippat med livet, även om alla inte får den uppenbarelsen på en sjukhusbrits. Den som föds med en livmoder föds också med ett visst antal ägg. Det talas om den biologiska klockan, det vill säga äggklockan som räknar ned tiden, åtminstone den fertila. Då när det fortfarande finns en möjlighet att bli något utöver sig själv. Och sedan, när äggen tar slut: en saknad eller en lättnad? Kanske behöver vi inte ens tänka den tanken i framtiden. Redan idag går det att frysa in ägg och delvis stanna tiden. Vad som egentligen kom först – hönan eller ägget – kanske blir en lika obsolet fråga. I ett framtida laboratorium kan ju båda skapas i samma stund. Och kanske kommer framtidens hyperintelligenta, genmodifierade hönor göra motstånd mot sin plats i näringskedjan, liksom hönorna i Orwells roman. Ägget är motsatsernas matvara, som rymmer både liv och död, intet och alltet, hård yta och mjukt innanmäte. Som kulinarisk anrättning tycks den vara vår minsta gemensamma nämnare världen över – inte minst till frukost, vår mest trygghetstörstande måltid. Våra brittiska och amerikanska vänner äter den scrambled, söderut får du en stadig spansk tortilla, österut glider ett löskokt ägg ned i nudelsoppan. Ett spar vi till koppen på det egna frukostbordet. Skeden får den kalkrika ytan att krackelera och toppen glider av, en nypa salt eller kaviar. Låt dagen och livet börja. Hur vet vi när en upplevelse är "äkta"? Författaren Italo Calvino (19231985) sökte Amerika men fann det inte i USA. Torbjörn Elensky följer Calvino i spåren i denna essä. ESSÄ: Detta är en text där skribenten reflekterar över ett ämne eller ett verk. Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna. Den amerikanska litteraturkritikern Marjorie Perloff föddes som Gabriele Mintz i Österrike 1931. När hon bara var sju år gammal, 1938, lyckades hennes judiska familj fly undan nazisterna och tog sig till USA. I sina memoarer, The Vienna Paradox, beskriver hon alldeles i början hur ett kaffeehaus, en restaurang i klassiskt wiensk stil, som skapats i New York, med alla de typiska möblerna i böjträ, små marmorbord och leende kypare i vita förkläden känns mera autentiskt än det gör att besöka ett samtida kafé i Wien. Det handlar naturligtvis om flera saker, inte minst hur ens förväntningar uppfylls: medan kyparna i Wien, enligt henne, är rätt otrevliga är de amerikanska låtsaswienarna idel leenden. Och både schnitzeln och bakelserna smakar bättre i New York än i Wien, enligt henne. Nostalgi, som även den som flytt från ett land, kan känna inför barndomens miljöer, är en lurig känsla. Den har inte nödvändigtvis med någon riktig minnesbild att göra. Mina tankar går till Perloffs iakttagelser när jag läser Italo Calvinos reseskildring från USA: Un ottimista in America (en optimist i Amerika). Mellan november 1959 och maj 1960 reste den mycket europeiske författaren och tidigare kommunisten från New York till Los Angeles, via Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, New Orleans och många andra små och stora städer. Resan bekostades av ett stipendium från Ford foundation. Hans plan var att skriva en bok om sin resa, som en sorts Gullivers resor, men dokumentär. Men när han väl hade färdigställt sitt manus och valt titeln, i mars 1961, bestämde han sig för att han inte ville ge ut den. Som litterärt verk ansåg han den för tunn, och som reportage inte tillräckligt originell. Jag själv hade, utifrån hans brev, uppfattat det som att han förstört manuset men för några år sedan gavs boken ut, med lite drygt 50 års fördröjning. Det är inte sällan intressant att läsa gamla reseskildringar. Är de tillräckligt bra eller originella kan deras litterära värde göra att de lever vidare som klassiker. Men även om de är lite sämre kan de fungera som fascinerande tidsbilder. Calvinos USA-bok är läsvärd för att den är ännu en pusselbit i ett stort författarskap, men lika mycket som tidsbild, inte av USA i sig, men av den europeiske intellektuelles möte med detta stora land, vars livsstil, musik, mode redan hade börjat påverka livet i Europa på allvar. När Calvino reser till USA är det som att han söker upp samtidens, modernitetens och framtidens urbild. Och hans skildring av mötet med landet, som legat så länge liksom i en tidkapsel, innehåller många välbekanta iakttagelser av fenomen som idag är normala även här: den stora mängden trafik, kvinnor som lever för sig själva, det för en italienare chockerande i att folk sitter ensamma och äter och naturligtvis förekomsten av restauranger med mat från hela världen. Han återkommer gång på gång till hur tråkigt livet i USA tycks honom. Redan på första raden i sin bok ångrar han att han tog ett kryssningsfartyg över Atlanten, och inte ett flyg. Hans möte med USA blir på något sätt mindre autentiskt. Eller åtminstone inte i fas med vad han förväntat sig. Istället för de snabba beslutens finansliv eller storpolitikens svindlande värld möter han USA via uttråkade pensionärer från Mellanvästern som spelar bingo för att få tiden att gå under överresan. Samtidigt är det något i den där första upplevelsen som biter sig fast, och han återkommer gång på gång till hur tråkigt livet i USA tycks honom. Folk har inte verkliga intressen, det förs inte seriösa diskussioner, och dess avantgarde i form av beatniks är bara en falsk upprorsrörelse, av folk som när det kniper kan gå hem till pappa och få lite mer pengar. Calvino själv hade i sin spädaste ungdom varit partisan och slagits mot fascisterna med vapen i hand, under andra världskrigets sista år. Att vara på houseparty med beatniks, för vilka den intellektuella höjdpunkten var knark och ett bongotrumsolo, var för honom helt meningslöst. Under hela sin resa försöker han få grepp om det verkliga, det autentiska USA. Men när han tycker sig se det lockar det honom inte särskilt mycket. Och han konstaterar förvånad att det första intrycket faktiskt är att USA inte är amerikaniserat. Vi är mera amerikaniserade än de, menar han. Vi har fler flipperspel, mer reklam, och dricker mer Coca Cola än vad de gör. Men han älskar Manhattan, som är den del av landet han bekantar sig med först. Där finns en puls och en öppenhet som tilltalar honom. Men han konstaterar snabbt att det nog inte egentligen är USA han befinner sig i där, utan något annat, eget. När han försöker närma sig landet genom att få gå på date med en genuin amerikansk kvinna på Manhattan visar hon sig undantagslöst vara ryska, polska, eller något annat, vad som helst utom vad han själv tänker sig som amerikanskt. Visst, han är inte dum, och han ironiserar samtidigt över sina egna förväntningar. Han frågar sig om han gör fel som under sin vistelse bor i Greenwich village. De flesta han ser på gatorna är ättlingar till italienare som anlände i början av seklet. Men de kan i allmänhet inte italienska längre, och om de gör det är det ofta någon dialekt. Deras familjer lämnade landet innan det konsoliderats som nationalstat, de är mera sicilianare, napoletanare, som fört med sig kulturen från de borbonska Syditalien men skulle vara främmande i det samtida Italien. Men det finns också senare invandrade, som bär med sig kunskapen om det moderna Italien. Inte sällan stöter han på dem på vad han kallar espresso-places, små kaffebarer i italiensk stil, som sedan några år blivit högsta mode. Han berättar att det är väldigt svårt för honom att få hans amerikanska vänner att förstå att dessa lokaler mest inger honom obehag. Försöken att skapa en italiensk atmosfär med lite halvdunkel, marmorbord, byster av romerska kejsare och någon högtalare ur vilken operaarior strömmar på svag volym inger honom snarare främlingskap, kanske till och med ett lätt obehag, än någon nostalgi. De som jobbar på de här barerna är ofta unga italienare, födda och uppvuxna i Italien. Calvino frågar sig hur de står ut. Han tänker att det inte kan finnas något svårare än att ställa om och förtränga det verkliga Italien som de känner till, för att bidra till att skapa denna konstgjorda italienska atmosfär, som inget har att göra med deras gamla hemland. När jag själv för några år sedan var i New Yorks Little Italy ville jag göra mig till och säga något på italienska till en kypare. Han förklarade för mig att han kom från Albanien och inte pratade italienska. Men han spelade rollen till fulländning. Det mest fascinerande som hänt sedan Calvino besökte USA är nog emellertid att det numera även i Italien finns ställen som är italienska på det där tillrättalagt kitschiga sättet som ska motsvara turisters förväntningar. Och vem vet, kanske någon av de här unga männen som utvandrade från Italien på 1950-talet skulle ha samma känsla inför en modern restaurang i det gamla hemlandet som Marjorie Perloff inför kaféerna i Wien: imitationen i New York känns mera äkta, för den motsvarar de egna förväntningarna. Jan Lööf, nyss 80 år fyllda, berättar om sitt liv och sina verk för Marie Lundström. Lööf är barnboksförfattare och konstnär, musiker och legendarisk Tårtan-skådespelare och långt ifrån pensionsmässig. När Marie Lundström intervjuar honom på eftermiddagen har han nyss ätit frukost eftersom han suttit uppe och jobbat till klockan sju på morgonen. Jan Lööf är aktuell med ny bilderbok om Skrot-Nisse, en av hans mest älskade barnboksfigurer. Hans böcker "Sagan om det röda äpplet" och "Morfar är sjörövare" har lästs av rader av generationer av barn och deras närstående vuxna. Felix-böckerna och böckerna om Pelle likaså. Och alla som sett 70-tals-tv-serien "Tårtan" såg honom i rollen som Janos. Eftersom det är som det är med covid-smittan så intervjuades Jan Lööf från flera mils avstånd. Sveriges Radios ljudtekniker Peter Flodby kunde  koppla upp Marie Lundström från hennes hem till sändarbilen utanför Jan Lööfs hem på Ekerö väster om Stockholm. Jan Lööf fick själv packa upp helt nya hörlurar och placera ett helt nytt puffskydd på mikrofonen. Allt för säkerhetens skull. Med dagens teknik kunde Marie och Lööf ändå föra ett nära samtal om livets väsentligheter trots de många milen dem emellan. Det är motsatsernas matvara och en symbol för det yttersta. Journalisten Anna Thulin har vispat ihop en essä om äggets betydelse för människan. Se gulan, hur den svävar i dimvitt hölje. Att äta eller inte äta ägg, det är frågan. Å ena sidan, skafferiets främsta basvara, fulländad i sin enkelhet. Å andra sidan, är det ett potentiellt liv som fräser där nere i stekpannan? Jag minns hur jag en gång fick en uppenbarelse på en brits med prassligt sjukhuspapper under ryggen. På den gråkorniga skärmen syntes vita rundlar som tycktes simma runt i en grynig massa. Mina ägg. Jag var en äggbärande människa. Det föreföll absurt och gör det fortfarande. Vi talar om fabriker som äggproducenter, när de snarare är förpackningsproducenter En gång var moderskapet mystiskt och heligt, ja, exakt hur barn blev till var något oklart. Nog visste man att det krävde en avklädd akt, men själva fröet till en ny människa såddes av en högre makt. Nu har vetskapen klätt av mystiken och vi vet exakt vad som sker när spermie möter ägg, och samtidigt känns tillblivandet mer kliniskt och sterilt än någonsin. Äggen kan sugas ut och injiceras och sättas tillbaka, som om kroppen bara var dess behållare. Till och med orden känns abstrakta fertilitetsappar, ägglossningstester för att mäta den lilla, lilla luckan då man har störst chans att bli gravid. Vad betyder det när vi kommer så långt bort från en företeelses uppkomst att den förlorar sin ursprungliga mening? Det gäller kroppen och det gäller mat, i högsta grad. Människor har ätit ägg från alla möjliga sorters djur, men det är först under de senaste århundraden som ägget blivit synonymt med hönor och massproduktion. I och med industrialiseringen har också äggets betydelse förändrats: från något exklusivt och andligt, till mer folkligt och sekulärt. Det har gått så långt att vi tycks glömma bort vart ägget faktiskt kommer från. Vi talar om fabriker som äggproducenter, när de snarare är förpackningsproducenter, som journalisten Mats Ekdahl påpekar i sin utmärkta matmonografi Ägget. Hönan är ju den som producerar. Vår viktigaste basvara är egentligen en fråga om stöld. Till ytan hård och bräcklig, inuti mjuk och samtidigt fyllig. Äggets inneboende motsatser gör att den passar väl som litterär symbol. Som i Jonathan Swifts roman Gullivers resor. Där krigar landet Lilliput mot landet Blefuscu om hur man bäst slår sönder ett hårdkokt ägg, från den trubbiga eller den spetsiga sidan? Det finns inget mellanting, du är antingen med det ena eller det andra laget. I romanen sägs kejsarens farfar ha råkat skära sig i fingret en gång som barn, och därför är det numer förbjudet för trubbändarna att skära från den spetsiga änden. Man har beräknat att elvatusen personer vid olika tillfällen hellre underkastar sig döden än att slå hål i den spetsiga änden, skriver Jonathan Swift. Och fortsätter: Många hundra tjocka böcker har skrivits om denna strid, men trubbändarnas skrifter är sedan länge förbjudna. Handlade det egentligen om ägg? Nej, såklart inte, lika lite som Swift i en annan essä förespråkade att man skulle äta barn. Han använde sig av satir och sagans form för att kritisera 1600-talets politiska och religösa ledare, och särskilt det engelska förtrycket av Irland. Han ville visa att dåtidens politiska strider var lika banala som frågan om vilken ände man skulle äta ett ägg. Kanske förtjänar historien lyftas fram idag igen? För visst tycks det finnas en hel del trubbätare och spetsätare bland dagens debattörer och Twitterriddare. Förutom romaner finns det otalig konst som hämtat inspiration från ägget. Kanske för att dess klassiska form känns tidlös, som i fallet med Arne Jacobsens fåtölj och Carl Fabergés juvelägg åt den ryska tsaren. Tidlös, ja, samtidigt som äggen påminner om tidens gång. George Orwell, berömd för romanen Djurfarmen, förde en dagbok över hur hans egna hönor värpte. Det var innan han slagit igenom som författare och han delvis försörjde sig som hönsfarmare. Den 30 mars 1940 skriver han: 19 ägg. Totalt den här veckan: 120 (på 25 hönor förmodligen rekord). Ägg-dagboken måste ha varit en hållpunkt i tillvaron, ett sätt att mäta vardagen och vad den gett. Orwell räknade inte bara verkliga ägg, utan lät dem också få en betydande roll i Djurfarmen, en allegorisk roman och kritik av stalinismen. Där blir äggen ett medel för motstånd, när hönorna bestämmer sig för att göra uppror mot ledargrisen. Det gör dem genom att förstöra sina egna ägg, istället för att tvingas ge bort dem och låta dem säljas vidare till människorna. Inte sällan beskrivs kranier som blanka äggskal i litteraturen. Kanske är det inte alltid ägget i sig som inspirerar, utan vad det representerar. En övergång från ett embryo till ett liv, från intet till ett något. En tillblivelse. Världsägget återfinns i många religioner och symboliserar universums skapelse. Ibland vilar det i vatten, ibland kläcks det utanför tid och rum. Ena halvan blir himmel och den andra halvan är jord. Visst framstår det som magiskt? Först var där ingenting, lika tomt som äggets vita, och ur den frånvaron uppstår livet och blir dess motsats. Men symbolen är inte mer magisk än att den också håller med modern vetenskap Big Bang som slår sönder stillheten och livet bryter fram, yrvaket rufsigt och på ostadiga ben. Hur ska vi då tolka det hela och oförstörda ägget? Som en symbol för döden? Se hur den vilar där i handen kall, livlös och sluten i perfekt symmetri. Det finns något dödligt med perfektionen, eftersom den inte lämnar utrymme för skapande och förändring. Himlen måste vara halvfärdig, med poeten Tomas Tranströmers ord. Ja, till ytan kanske ägget är slutet och påminner om döden. Inte sällan beskrivs kranier som blanka äggskal i litteraturen. Men för de flesta är nog ägget förknippat med livet, även om alla inte får den uppenbarelsen på en sjukhusbrits. Den som föds med en livmoder föds också med ett visst antal ägg. Det talas om den biologiska klockan, det vill säga äggklockan som räknar ned tiden, åtminstone den fertila. Då när det fortfarande finns en möjlighet att bli något utöver sig själv. Och sedan, när äggen tar slut: en saknad eller en lättnad? Kanske behöver vi inte ens tänka den tanken i framtiden. Redan idag går det att frysa in ägg och delvis stanna tiden. Vad som egentligen kom först hönan eller ägget kanske blir en lika obsolet fråga. I ett framtida laboratorium kan ju båda skapas i samma stund. Och kanske kommer framtidens hyperintelligenta, genmodifierade hönor göra motstånd mot sin plats i näringskedjan, liksom hönorna i Orwells roman. Ägget är motsatsernas matvara, som rymmer både liv och död, intet och alltet, hård yta och mjukt innanmäte. Som kulinarisk anrättning tycks den vara vår minsta gemensamma nämnare världen över inte minst till frukost, vår mest trygghetstörstande måltid. Våra brittiska och amerikanska vänner äter den scrambled, söderut får du en stadig spansk tortilla, österut glider ett löskokt ägg ned i nudelsoppan. Ett spar vi till koppen på det egna frukostbordet. Skeden får den kalkrika ytan att krackelera och toppen glider av, en nypa salt eller kaviar. Låt dagen och livet börja. He was a sought after TV presenter and hosted the clubbing TV show ‘BPM’ which aired on the UK’s number one commercial channel as well presenting a few shows from WMC for MTV. Graham has been a DJ his whole life and lived through disco, soul, jazz funk and was there at the beginning of the house music phenomenon. In 1985-1986 after years on London’s Pirate radio stations he presented the soul show on London’s Capital FM ahead of his move to Kiss 100FM. His real ‘craft learning years’ were at Gullivers in London’s Mayfair from 1980-1989 where he played 6 nights a week, 7 a hours a night to the capitals movers and shakers. Lately John and I have been favoring the "live" recording process (we go to a restaurant or coffee shop, find a table, set down the recorder and begin), in part because Skype can be, um ... kinda problematic. And eating and drinking while talking comes easy to us. So for the time being we're sticking with it. Live recording, that is. And eating and drinking, which I'm told is helpful. Kerstin Strandberg är en av Sveriges mest originella författare. Sedan debuten 1967 har hon gett ut en mängd böcker, alla fulla av överraskningar och skrivna på ett klart språk. Hon återanvänder ofta sina romanpersoner och låter läsarna upptäcka nya sidor hos dem i nästa bok. Nyligen kom hennes elfte roman ”Silkespappersmönstret” som är en fristående berättelse om familjen Haverdalius i  Lund. Louise Epstein har träffat Kerstin Strandberg och pratat om självförtroende, berättande och konstruktionen av en roman. Klassikerrummet handlar om ”Gullivers resor” av Jonathan Swift som de flesta idag tänker på som barnbok. Boken handlar om skeppsläkaren Gulliver som lider skeppsbrott och blir fånge i Lilliputtarnas land. Men ursprungsversionen som kom 1726 var inte alls riktad till barn utan den var en besk samhällssatir för vuxna.  På 1700-talet kunde det vara farligt att kritisera samhället öppet även i västvärlden och därför valde författaren att angripa de sociala missförhållandena på Irland i allegorins form.
