Come and join the conversation with Jess Parkinson! Jess is a certified Breathwork & Wellbeing Coach and Head of Holistic + Mind at renowned chain Gymbox. With a background as an actress and performer, Jess found her true calling in a really organic way, having looked for things to help her along her own personal journey. Her mantra is to help people feel better everyday, ad she certainly does just that! Inherently passionate about her work, Jess talks me through the beginnings of her journey into the industry. Working as a performer in West End shows such as the epic School of Rock, prompted Jess to really zone in on the importance of looking after herself in an industry that is so unpredictable. Like many performers and creatives, the nature of the work needs something on the side, often emotionally and financially to provide support and a sense of grounding as the work can be sporadic. A chance conversation and a truth bomb from a friend steered her into becoming a personal trainer in the first instance. Jess also found yoga as a way of keeping herself grounded, and fell in love with the practice. Feeling the benefits not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually too, Jess knew that it was a lifestyle she wanted to explore and delve deeper into. Citing it as life changing for her Jess continued on the path of discovering the whole system, and how it becomes the epicentre of how you live your life. She tells me about the science behind it, the ancient and historical importance, it was so fascinating! We discuss the difficulties of being a newcomer to yoga in particular, especially as a female, and Jess debunks the myths surrounding this, proving that it's actually one of the most beautiful and inclusive practices around. Not only has Jess got decades of experience in a professional capacity, taking her work extremely seriously with her certifications, she's not a stranger to the limelight either. Talking me through her incredible appearance on This Morning (WOWZERS!) to discuss Eye Yoga (I won't spoil it by telling you what it is!) we delve into the small changes that you can make that will impact your health for the better. Talking about the importance of looking after ourselves, especially as women in business, Jess & I discuss self-awareness, the temptation to work ourselves into the ground and the damage that can arise from failing to put ourselves first. Jess has the most wonderful, calming, positive energy about her, and is clearly so passionate about her work. What a truly lovely soul, who really is living by her mantra- Helping People To Feel Better Everyday. As CEO of Gymbox, Marc Diaper knows what it takes to keep evolving and staying ahead of the curve in fitness, whether that’s through stats breakdown, sticking to brand values or simply staying patient. A series of boutiques under one roof, Gymbox plays host to everything from DJs and music created specifically for the brand, or partnerships and tie-ins with icons such as Gymshark or Brazilian jiu-jitsu originating from the Gracie family direct. It’s the fitness space that’s a fully inclusive experience for workouts where anything goes. For more information visit https://escapefitness.com/podcast Watch the full episode on YouTube   Marc Diaper believes in being the hardest worker in the room. He works hard because he’s always hungry for further success. On top of this, his mindset benefits the mindset of his staff because he still knows how to stay humble. Marc’s first job was in a sports shop. His meticulous detail was drilled into him by his boss and accidental mentor. Following a stint at Southampton Football Club, a sports degree at university and a year of travel, Marc came back and gained his qualifications in nutrition and sports therapy. He started in the fitness industry as a fitness instructor and personal trainer for LA Fitness. Through hard work and the right attitude, he was on path to success faster than anyone else. In 2009 he started his own consultancy business, before continuing trend for success when he joined Gymbox as sales director. Six years later he’d risen the ranks through managing director to CEO, where he’s inspiring others in Gymbox, a business that motivates a membership, stimulates a city and inspires an industry. Gymbox is for the ravers, the first timers, the masochists, the street dancers, the gurus, the people who aren’t satisfied with easy; where enough is never enough. Gymbox is not purely a gym. It's the experience that you will want to re-live no matter where, no matter when! Everything Gymbox does, from the designs of gym interiors, to the people hired, and the classes, has to inspire and excite, energise and ignite. Gymbox believes in creating workouts that get raved about and venues that get talked about, so forever and always, anything goes.     Episode highlights - How important disruption is in creating a brand and ensuring you stay in the forefront of people’s minds, especially at the start of a business. Why the whole team, and often customers, can influence your marketing activity and how collaboration is key to progressing in a way that makes sense for every interest. What the demographic difference is to your venture and how that will change depending on the life choices of your customers, especially in boutique markets targeted towards younger generations. How your programming will benefit from regular investment to stay ahead of the curve and give your members the best experiences, from holistic to sadistic. Why all clubs and locations under one brand should be as good as each other, giving any member the same level of quality no matter where they visit. How to grow and build your talent in-house, and protect yourself from competitors that might pay more. How you can maintain your position in the market financially as a mid-premium product when most other alternatives have been wiped out by low-cost operators. Why it’s important to develop and evolve your environment between space for product and room for dwell time or letting members relax. How brand partnerships benefit both parties and are often more useful to generate awareness rather than leads, but why they’re so important in the right circumstances. What benefit defining brand values will bring to your staff and your business direction. You need to live and breathe them. What the values are behind Gymbox – such as “don’t be a dick” – and how these values drive the brand, the staff, performance and progress. What’s next for the future of Gymbox? Through a non-diet approach she strives to help her clients and followers to develop a healthy and relaxed relationship with food that relies on acknowledging and trusting their own internal body cues rather than external rules and regulations. She was the nutritionist for the 2017 BBC1 documentary Mind Over Marathon, which followed a group of people with a range of mental health concerns training to run the London Marathon. When she's not working with clients 1-1 she can be found calling out nutritional nonsense on her social channels. In this wide-ranging conversation Laura explains why she declared war on Diet Culture and her take down of Women’s Health Magazine. Actually, since then she also launched a successful Instagram campaign to get GymBox to take down a post that promoted exercise as punishment. She also describes the paradigm of Intuitive Eating (and its misappropriation), and the link between veganism and orthorexia. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The co-founder of Gymbox, David Cooper, reveals how he turned his boyhood childhood love of fitness - and especially boxing and strength training - into a career in managing and then owning fitness facilities. Gymbox is a company that set out to be ‘the antidote of gyms' because they thought that most gyms were boring. They created something that had never been seen in the UK – with a unique look and feel to the clubs perfect for a clear target audience of 18-35 year olds. They say that a Gymbox location is the only place where working out is as much fun as going out. It's an approach resonating with users: there's a Gymbox in almost every part of London and further growth looks certain. Episode highlights: How David and his business partner generated funding and launched the first Gymbox location. Their success in reinvesting and expanding the business. The big lesson: the Gymbox team are always looking at how they can do things better, always innovating, and always in tune with how fitness trends are changing. David's insights on what operators can learn from the rise of the boutique studio experience in order to remain competitive.
