Originally uploaded April 1st, Re-edited April 20th. Chris Holman welcomes back Ned Staebler, VP Economic Development Wayne St. University and President / CEO TechTown Detroit , Detroit, MI. Ned talks about key data points, equitable impact, growth. Ned talks about Hatch Detroit contest, our involvement in NFL Draft prep, Small Business Support Hubs expansion ... and end with a nod to "and tech entrepreneurship is equally important – MedHealth summit, SXSW founders, etc." Ned references the investiture and how TechTown fits into the prosperity agenda, talk about GS10KSB success, the economic impact strategy, the innovation district Ned provides an entrepreneur call-to-action (strategy session) and a broader call-to-action (come check out our space and some of our entrepreneurs at the upcoming Hatch events) The 20th Anniversary logo marries TechTown and Wayne State branding elements into the design. TechTown Detroit's blue logo is embedded in the zero of “20” above the word “years” and the launch and anniversary dates. This is then encircled by a gold ring with inner green ring and Wayne State's “W” shield centered at the bottom. “TechTown's 20th anniversary represents a significant milestone in Wayne State's efforts to drive economic prosperity and foster innovation in Detroit,” said WSU President Dr. Kimberly Andrews Espy. “Guided by the pillars of our Prosperity Agenda, which prioritizes accelerating mobility for our students and fueling innovation for our competitiveness, TechTown is Wayne State's innovation hub for 21st century commerce that will continue to be transformative for our students and community.” Originally founded by Wayne State University, Henry Ford Health and General Motors to support tech-based spinoffs from the university, TechTown expanded its incubation and acceleration strategies to strengthen small businesses and tech entrepreneurs across Wayne County. Since its inception, TechTown has supported more than 6,000 businesses in and around Detroit. These businesses have created more than 2,300 jobs and raised more than $408 million in startup and growth capital. In 2023 alone, TechTown supported more than 900 businesses and 1,000 entrepreneurs, who raised more than $23 million in startup and growth capital and started 26 new businesses. Moreover, TechTown is committed to uplifting and embracing the diversity of Detroit and the region. Of the 1,000-plus entrepreneurs supported last year, 63% identified as Black or African American, 65% used she/her pronouns and 11% were immigrants to the U.S. TechTown collaborates closely with Wayne State's Office of Economic Development (OED) to elevate local businesses and catalyze business growth across the Detroit region. An example of this aligned work is the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program (GS10KSB). Team members from both TechTown and OED mentor and support entrepreneurs during each cohort of GS10KSB and after they graduate. “TechTown is incredibly proud of the work we've done to strengthen Detroit's neighborhood small businesses and commercial corridors over the last 20 years. And with President Kimberly Andrews Espy at the helm of Wayne State University, we know that our shared mission of driving equitable economic impact in the city is stronger than ever,” says Ned Staebler, vice president for economic development at Wayne State University and president and CEO of TechTown Detroit. “This new anniversary badge is a way for us to visually celebrate the alignment between TechTown and Wayne State, and we look forward to many more milestones acknowledging our collective work.” » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Watch MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/

Ameneh Marhaba is doing her part to spread the love of West African food in Detroit.Born in the West African country of Liberia, she grew up in that country, where her mother is form, as well as Lebanon, her father's home country, before she, her dad, and siblings moved to Detroit when she was around 15.Having always loved the food she grew up on, she wanted to share it with others in her new home. She thought of launching a food truck but soon learned that she was priced out of such a venture, so instead she started going to bars, offering to cook and sell items like jollof rice, fried plantains, and spiced meat skewers. It turns out that the bars were receptive to the idea.“Most of them were really nice about it,” she said.So in 2016 she started doing pop-ups at those bars under the name Little Liberia. Over time, her efforts grew into catering gigs and one-off seated dinners. Now, with the help of Hatch Detroit by TechTown, which awarded her $100,000 in a competition with some 350 other small business, Marhaba is getting ready to open Little Liberia as a brick-and-mortar restaurant. She recently discussed her journey and her plans for the restaurant.

They're the winners of the Hatch Detroit contest, and before their permanent space has been found they've set up shop in a neat old retail storefront on Van Dyke. What follows in today's episode as a conversation with the owners, Drew and Erin Pineda. We talk about their journey to get set up in Detroit, books and more. As we do every year, we had the finalists for the Hatch Detroit competition join us in-studio to talk through their hopes, their dreams, their business plans and more for this year's event... that has been upgraded to a $100,000 prize. So listen in as we talk with the director, Vittoria, as well as this year's finalists that include a wine and charcuterie place, a book store, a vegan restaurant, a french crepe spot, and a makeup shop... You can vote out at: https://hatchdetroit.com/vote/ The French Cow was created in 2015 because when I moved to Detroit, I could not find the type of food that I was used to eating while growing up in France. I recognized that Detroit had a need for a crepes shop when, after tasting a few different local restaurants, my children, then 3 and 5 years old, turned to me and said, “You should make crepes, Mom. Yours are better!” I thought for a second and I replied,” You know what?I really should.” Thus, The French Cow was born. Street Beet is a 100% vegan food pop-up owned and operated by Nina Paletta and Meghan Shaw. Our mission is to continuously reimagine vegan food as we know it, pairing creativity and passion to offer a dining experience that is approachable and delicious for all. Our goal is to provide our fellow Detroiters with affordable, nostalgic vegan comfort food with a focus on allergen-friendly options. ILERA Apothecary is an organic and vegan beauty tech company that caters to customers who want the highest quality ingredients for their skin without compromising the environment or their budget. Utilizing digital technology, we have created a highly interactive customer experience that includes in-person wellness events, informative blog posts, engaging social media posts and in the near future, an augmented reality app. We are committed to making an impact on our customers, employees and local communities. This includes the women who handpick raw materials in West Africa, our employees who manufacture products in Detroit, and our customers who have found the solution to reviving their skin with ILERA Apothecary products. 27th Letter Books is an independent bookstore with the mission to connect and inspire people through stories. We carry new, general interest books that are carefully curated to highlight excellent writing and underrepresented voices. In our permanent retail space, we will also offer rental of an audio recording room. By offering customers the opportunity to shop locally for books and a place to record their own stories, we provide a physical and personalized experience that cannot be replicated online or through chain or big box stores. Customers can peruse the shelves, delight in learning something new, feel the comfort of nostalgia when they recognize a favorite title, and walk away reaffirmed, knowing they belong to a community with shared values. Brix will be a gathering place built on the love of wine. We'll be located in the 7/Liv neighborhood and were really excited to join such an amazing community. We'll offer a curated wine list featuring varietals from some of the best regions in the world. Our food menu will consist of amazing Charcuterie along with other (small plate) food options. We will also launch, Brix Concierge, a wine curation service. This service will help customers with wine selections, curated wine menus for events, food pairings, wine education classes and more. Welcome to a bonus Friday edition of your Daily Detroit. Today, we discuss the sad news that Axle Brewing will shutter its Livernois Taproom June 30th, barely two years after it first opened. Episode 161 of the IT in the D podcast from our Podcast Detroit studios was a fun one, as it always is when we're joined by Vittoria from Hatch Detroit. We also had the winner and one of the other finalists from their 2016 competition in-studio with us, and it's also always a good time hearing what people are doing to bring new and cool businesses downtown... Bird Bee: A lifestyle clothing boutique offering a mix of modern bohemian, vintage inspired and contemporary clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories. Corbé: A ceramic design and manufacturing studio located in Detroit's North End that wants to open retail space. It makes handcrafted porcelain wares. Coriander Kitchen & Farm: Expansion of an urban farm and catering business into a brick-and-mortar café featuring casual, affordable, healthy food in a rustic environment on Detroit's far east side. Meta Physica Massage & Sauna: A wellness center offering therapeutic bodywork, full-spectrum infrared saunas, a raw juice bar, an herbal apothecary and health-inspired retail, meditation classes and community workshops. and of course, Hatch Detroit is at www.HatchDetroit.com [soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/281979282" params="color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false" width="100%" height="166" iframe="true" /] IT in the D On the web: http://www.ITinTheD.com On Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/ITintheD/ On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/IT-in-D-91763 On Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD On Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/ITintheD Podcast Detroit is at: On the web: http://www.podcastdetroit.com/ On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PodcastDetroit On Twitter: https://twitter.com/PodcastDetroit On Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/podcastdetroit

This episode takes us down to the historical Detroit neighborhood Cork Town with Head Brewer and Founder of Batch Brewing Co. Stephen Roginson. You may know Batch Brewing from their Kickstarter Campaign, as the 2013 Hatch Detroit contest winner, as one of the hottest new brewpubs in Detroit. Stephen was such a great interview. He has a great story about how he got into brewing and how he hustled to get Batch Brewing Co. up and running. They are one the hottest new brewpubs around and not only are they producing creative and flavorful beers but they are also using their brewery to give back to the community with the Feelgood Tap. Go down and enjoy a beer, some food, and some good conversation. This episode I am going to highlight a bottle opener company that is running their kickstarter campaign right now, Eagle Lock Company Cap-Off Bottle Opener. This is an awesomely unique bottle opener and conversation starter. American made, hand crafted bottle openers using the original Eagle Lock Company design from the 1940's. Mike and Matt have a great product and I want their kickstarter campaign to succeed. So go check them out on Kickstarter Eagle Cap-off bottle opener and support the cause! As always you can join the conversation on my website, billsbeerreport.com or Facebook at Bill's Beer Report. If twitter and instagram are more your speed, check me out @BillsBeerReport. You can find the podcast on the Tangent Bound Network, iTunes, SoudCloud, and Stitcher Radio. As always, thank you to Son Step for the wicked theme music.
We had a pretty full house for episode 98 of our weekly live podcast. With Hatch Detroit in to talk about their $50,000 contest for the third year in a row to what Rocket Fiber has going on downtown and into the world of things downtown and a little mayhem with the Daily Detroit crew and some insight from Andrew The Man Expert that had us all rolling and unable to recover, it was just simply a blast of a night... The latest news and events that caught our attention, as well as our own event on Wednesday, July 1st kicked off the show. From ultra conservative religious southerners to Donald Trump, who's having the worst week? Drones getting shot down. Our insane weekend. All kinds of whacky nonsense in this week's round up. This Wednesday, July 1st we'll be hitting The Whisky Parlor, which is on the 2nd floor of Grand Trunk downtown. Can't wait to check it out, and we're really looking forward to seeing everyone there. It's located at 608 Woodward Avenue, again up on the 2nd floor. 5pm start time. No cover charge to get in. No speeches. No agenda. No sales pitches. Just networking with some of the best and brightest folks here in and around the metro Detroit information technology community. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. Details can be found here on the site - http://www.itinthed.com/meet/, on our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/ITinTheD, or in our Meetup group - http://www.meetup.com/ITintheD/ Segment two dove in with Vittoria from Hatch Detroit. For the third year running, she joined us to talk about their great $50,000 contest for entrepreneurs downtown. Lots of great information in here if you're looking to apply - what sorts of businesses they're looking for, tips and tricks on how to best get through the selection process, and a bunch more good data. Applications are open now, so head on over to their website and get rolling: http://hatchdetroit.com/ Our third segment focused in on Marc Hudson from Rocket Fiber. By now, you've surely heard about their efforts downtown to increase internet bandwidth and capacity...but you might not know about everything else they have going on with television, or how you can get your neighborhood / town on their list of places to investigate coming to, or their work with more than just the business district downtown. Give it a listen, and then hit them up at http://www.rocketfiber.com/ Segment four was...well, it was sort of a free for all. We had the Daily Detroit crew talking about some recent shenanigans. Andrew the Man Expert chimed in with his wit, humor and views on everything going on throughout the night and more. Just a blast of a segment, and it's been a long time since we've laughed that hard...but be warned, this is definitely a segment full of topics for the 18 and over crowd. Catch Daily Detroit at http://www.dailydetroit.com/, and you can read some more of Andrew's wit and wisdom in articles like this one: http://www.brobible.com/life/article/douchebags-you-see-out-at-night/ [soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/212728528" params="color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false" width="100%" height="166" iframe="true" /] As always, we can be found: On the web: http://www.ITinTheD.com On Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/ITintheD/ On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=91763 On Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ITintheD On Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/ITintheD
Episode 95...and on our fifth episode from the new studio, we had a pretty packed room with guests covering all sorts of topics. Open data in the city of Detroit and an upcoming hackathon to find better ways to use it. Updates from our friends at Detroit Beer Press about their latest issue. A check in nearly two years later with Batch Brewing Company on how things are going downtown. A look at the state of the Detroit tech scene from the eyes of someone still in school and breaking into the industry. Don't forget you can get 10% off Squarespace's offerings by using discount code IT during the checkout process: http://www.squarespace.com/, and you can try QuickBooks for self-employed tryselfemployed.com/it And so, so much more... After our 1995 themed intro came to a close, our opening segment kicked off with a recap of our last event and information about our upcoming events, the depressing information that both The Goonies and Ferris Bueller's Day Off are now both thirty years old, the hilarious (to us) story about a member of ISIS posting a selfie that led to an airstrike less than 24 hours later, a very concerning tale about how the Red Cross spent over $500 million in Haiti after the terrible earthquakes there...and yet somehow managed to only build six houses, Gamestop's purchase of ThinkGeek's parent company, our lovely new kegerator stocked with the Scurvy Dan Blood Orange IPA from Falling Down Beer Company and more. In our second segment, we dove in with our guests David Lingholm, the Director of Digital Media and Community Engagement for the City of Detroit, and Erin Sommerville, Media Relations Specialist for Automation Alley. There's a hackathon coming up this weekend, #Hack4Detroit, that's looking to find some better uses for the massive amounts of data that the city has accumulated over the years, and there's some decent prize money for those who can help. Designers, coders, and even just folks with ideas are welcome...but the signup cutoff is Wednesday, so hurry: http://www.automationalley.com/Events/Calendar/Event-Detail.aspx?uniqueid=16840 In segment three, we checked in with our friends Courtney Ochab, Ian Burk and Tony Barchok from Detroit Beer Press and Stephen Roginson of Batch Brewing Company. Batch Brewing was on waaaaaaaaay back in episode 10 of our show when they were a finalist (and eventual winner!) of the Hatch Detroit competition in 2013, and they've come a long way since then. Not only are they open, but they're in full swing with production of a number of great beers, have a solid kitchen, and have a monthly "feel good tap" where a portion of the proceeds go to a local organization. Can't beat that. Detroit Beer Press isn't doing to shabby either, with their latest issue in breweries, distilleries and locations throughout the area...which hypothetically might include another IT in the D style rant. Updates about their Howler Club Membership program and more await your ears. In our fourth and final segment (no, still no infamous fifth segments in the new studio as of yet), we talked with Kevin Hill, a local guy still in college at RIT, and working his way into the Detroit tech scene. We met Kevin at our Hopcat event back in May, and absolutely had to have him join us in-studio to continue that conversation on air. He's got some great perspectives on how things look from his point of view - what he sees going well, going wrong, what works, what doesn't, and just a great take on things in general. And that brought us to a close. Tune in next week as we're joined by Right Brain Networks to talk about DevOps among other topics, Make Moore Media to talk film and production, and Yum Village to talk about their group's organization and event. Don't forget you can get 10% off Squarespace's offerings by using discount code IT during the checkout process: http://www.squarespace.com/, and you can try QuickBooks for self-employed tryselfemployed.com/it Again,
IT in the D, Episode 55, and a really solid episode tonight. Kind of rushing this recap in an effort to get the broadcast out quickly so that people can hear about the Hatch Detroit finalists in time for voting...so forgive the lack of links to the news articles we discussed, but time is of the essence on this one... Okay, so quick recap: Newco is an "open" style conference taking place on Thursday, September 18th, and you can read all about the companies involved as well as registering for their free day of events at http://det.newco.co/ The four Hatch Detroit finalists are: Cockadoodle is a full-service breakfast and lunch concept planned for the Avenue of Fashion that embodies the values of farm-freshness, genuine hospitality, quality standards and community honor. Gabriel Hall plans to be a live entertainment bar & restaurant which celebrates the rich New Orleans-Detroit connection. It features an authentic Creole menu and signature drinks. Sister Pie is a bakery opening in the West Village and Parker & Kercheval. They aim to celebrate the seasons through pie, to provide consistently delicious, thoughtful and inventive food, and to foster a welcoming and open environment for both employees and customers. Third Wave Music is an instrument retail store concept that plans to sell new and used instruments, provide lessons and operate a repair facility. It aims to become a community space for Detroit musicians. Great information from all four of the finalists, and you really need to listen in, hear what they had to say, and then get out and vote. You can vote on the Hatch Detroit website at http://hatchdetroit.com/, or at their in-person voting event today (Tuesday), the last in-person voting opportunity. The final event is Wednesday night, the Hatch Off, where the winner will be announced after presentations from the finalists and a final round of voting by the judges. IT in the D, Episode 49. Or "Season 2, Episode 5" because no, we haven't let that go yet. We talked a lot about Detroit this episode. A lot. We also had some issues with the board running things, so the sound's a little twitchy at times, but we've cleaned it up as solidly as we can. Businesses in Detroit. Launching things in Detroit. Space planning in Detroit. Good things in Detroit. Bad things in Detroit. People inside Detroit. People outside of Detroit. All kinds of topics throughout the show with our guests from Hatch Detroit, Bamboo Detroit and Daily Detroit... As always, our opening segment talked some news, some local events, some random stuff that caught our eye, and waded through the introductions for the evening. This was one of those episodes where we kind of went all over the map, so if you're looking for a specific segment to listen to in order to catch something...sorry, you're just going to have to listen to it all to get the full impact of this one. Our second segment started diving in with Vittoria from Hatch Detroit. She's a return guest, and we did things a little smarter this year. Instead of waiting for them to be down to their four finalists, we thought it'd be a good idea to help get the word out before the doors closed on your opportunity to get $50,000 in funding, legal advice and marketing help on that business you want to open downtown. They also work with neighborhoods and existing businesses, so there's a ton of great information in here. [soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/158056690" params="color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false" width="100%" height="166" iframe="true" /] And then...somewhere in there...we started talking about Detroit in general. The neighborhoods. Zoning issues. What should and shouldn't be done with the area by the river. Were the casinos a great idea or a horrible idea? Can businesses inside Detroit successfully migrate to the suburbs...and vice versa? What's a pop-up? Why do they happen? Why are there always so many damned bicycles downtown these days? So no, we didn't really stick too well to "segment" format or even what one would call "focused"...but it was a great show full of awesome topics of conversation with some really sharp, passionate people. Expect that to happen on a regular basis. - You can find us at http://www.ITintheD.com, on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ITinTheD, on Meetup at http://www.meetup.com/ITintheD/, and on Twitter at https://twitter.com/itinthed - All of the information you need to find out and sign up for Hatch Detroit can be found at http://hatchdetroit.com/ - Bamboo Detroit is a great co-working space downtown that you should absolutely keep an eye on to see what they've got going on: http://bamboodetroit.com/ - Daily Detroit, as always, can be found at http://www.dailydetroit.com/. Could not possibly have asked for a better group to have in-studio with us last night. Hatch Detroit and their four finalists. Michipreneur. Bamboo Detroit. Beacon Hill Staffing. Great show, awesome conversations, and very cool to hear about some things going on around the city... In our opening segment, we kick things off with Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit, Amanda Lewan of Michipreneur and Bamboo Detroit, and Steven Urenda of Beacon Hill Staffing. Hatch Detroit is running a contest for entrepreneurs in the area, with the winner getting $50,000 to open up a storefront in Detroit. The final four contestants join us in-studio during our second and third segments, because the public gets to vote on who that winner will be. But to start off, Vittoria tells us a little bit about the background of the contest, how people got involved, the process of narrowing down the entries and how they got down to this final four. Michipreneur is a great online resource for entrepreneurs and business types here in the southeast Michigan area, and Bamboo Detroit is a new coworking space open downtown where you can grab a desk and other office amenities. In our second segment, we keep Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit and Amanda Lewan of Michipreneur with us, and we bring in the first pair of finalists for the Hatch Detroit $50,000 grand prize - Batch Brewing Company and HenriettaHaus Coffee Roasters. In our third segment, we still have with Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit and Amanda Lewan with us, and we bring in the other pair of finalists for the Hatch Detroit $50,000 grand prize. Corktown Cinema and Spielhaus Toys. In our final segment, we wrapped up a bit with Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit talking about the voting process to see which of the four finalists will walk away with the $50,000 prize, chatted with Amanda Lewan about both Michipreneur and Bamboo Detroit, and finally managed to sneak Steve Urenda from Beacon Hill Staffing back into the conversation. About Hatch Detroit: http://www.HatchDetroit.com Founded in 2011 by Ted Balowski and Nick Gorga-two passionate lovers of Detroit- Hatch Detroit was created to give others the opportunity to have a role in the redevelopment of Detroit. The Contest was built on an idea called “Crowd Entrepreneurship” where average citizens have a role in voting for the type of retail they want in their community, and determining the winner of the Hatch Contest. Since 2011, two winners have been announced, and several semi-finalists are in the process of opening. Now in its third year, Hatch Detroit has expanded its retail role into six neighborhoods in Detroit as part of the Detroit Lion's Living for the City Initiative. Hatch Detroit will be partnering with local Community Development Corporations (CDC's) to determine an area of focus that works within the community's masterplan for its retail strip. Examples include improvements in signage, interior lighting, window displays, and outdoor beautification projects all geared to improving retail.
