Amy Beckley is the founder and inventor of Proov, the first FDA-cleared test to confirm successful ovulation at home. If you’re not sure if you’re not having healthy ovulation and you need to confirm it, these tests are fantastic. Amy developed Proov after her own struggles with recurrent miscarriages and infertility before going through IVF to have her first son, who is now 10 years old. She realized that, although she was ovulating, she just wasn’t making enough progesterone for conception to successfully concur. She experimented with progesterone supplementation and that was enough to successfully conceive her daughter. We’ve talked a lot about pregnancy and fertility on this podcast before, but there’s a whole segment out there that doesn’t get discussed as much: The child-free-by-choice women. Emma Criswell knew from a very young age that she did not want to have children. She’s a marketing executive out of Columbus, Ohio, but she spent her 20’s in New York City advocating for agency over her body and making her own decisions. After nine doctors and 14 years, she was finally able to get the elective sterilization surgery. This is a serious decision but one that is within a woman’s right to make, and often women are not given the agency over their bodies to make these decisions without doctors pushing back. Liesl Huenemann is a former client turned current friend, cat mom, and teacher. I have some very exciting news to share with you today, which was already given away in the title: I’m pregnant! It’s been hard to hold this information in, but I wanted to wait until I was 12 weeks in to start sharing the news publicly. I love that I’ll be able to share this journey with you, let you know everything that I’ve been working on, and everything I will be doing throughout the pregnancy, into postpartum, and into motherhood. Many women don’t know that fertility awareness is an option for them. When they see their doctors about their options, they are often told that there’s no reason to get off birth control unless they’re trying to get pregnant. But as we’ve discussed on this show before, there are any number of reasons why women may be looking into other options. Georgie Kovacs is the founder of Fem Power Health, which was founded after her first-hand experience with infertility. Jessica Victoria has such a similar philosophy to me when it comes to women’s hormone health and fertility. She is a holistic nutrition practitioner and women’s health and hormones coach, and like many people that get into the field, her interest in hormone health started with her own health issues and realizing the potential side effects of birth control. When she quit taking birth control, she developed post-pill amenorrhea and didn’t start having her period for over two years after she came off the pill. She began to document her journey on Instagram, including her pregnancy, and the rest is history. We touch on several topics, including syncing your habits to your cycle, why she doesn’t do diet plans, and not following strict rules—but it always comes back to tuning into and listening to the body. And that’s the central takeaway from all of this: That overly specific rules can do more harm than good, and the best course of action is to take in what information you can, try it for yourself, and see what feels good to you and gets you the results you’re looking for. I want to focus on how you can prepare yourself to get off birth control. I’ve had people reaching out to me asking what they can do to better prepare their bodies for getting off the pill and how to give themselves the best experience possible, so I wanted to share my top five tips for making this transition as smooth as possible. Nadya Okamoto is a 21-year old Harvard student, founder and executive director of Period, an organization fighting to end period poverty and stigma that she founded at the age of 16. Period is now the largest run youth organization in women’s health, and one of the fastest-growing ones in the united states. For years, we have been told that periods are dirty, shameful, and something to be kept secret. We’ve come a long way in bringing these issues to light, but we still have a long way to go!
