Today's episode is all about fats and their role when trying to conceive with Hashimoto's. We know fats are an important aspect of our diets, so we'll discuss the different types, anti-inflammatory and inflammatory, and how you can incorporate more of the anti-inflammatory fats to help support the many functions within your body. Anti-inflammatory fats are needed in Hashimoto's women's diets because they help decrease inflammation, support basic cell and brain function, boost the production of female sex hormones and also help transport those hormones throughout the body. Essentially, they are needed for our thyroid and sex hormones to function proproperly, which we know is key when TTC! We will also discuss the controversial Keto diet. We explain what it is, how it puts your body in a state of ketosis and why we don't recommend this for women with Hashimoto's. The Keto diet is highly restrictive and hard to maintain, as it excludes many carb options that contain vitamins and nutrients our bodies love. However, we do recommend learning what your carb/fat tolerance is and using this to your advantage to improve energy levels! Lastly, we will share some of our favorite plant and animal fats, which includes avocado, flax seed, hemp seed, eggs, salmon, tuna, olives, nut and seed butters, and more! Learning how to incorporate more of these healthy, anti-inflammatory fats is a great tool to have when balancing all hormones and optimizing your egg quality and monthly cycle! Want more? What do you really know about your menstrual cycle—and where did that information come from? Young girls and women are often taught about menstrual cycles in relationship to two things: periods and pregnancy. That is, don't get pregnant! And also, periods are gross. This is such limited and almost useless information that doesn't support overall health and wellbeing. Plus, pills are often prescribed as a blanket solution to fix irregular cycles, alter heavy periods, or manage symptoms. Then, many women are flummoxed when they come off the pill after years or decades of use to find the old problems return immediately. The symptoms are only hidden by the regulating power of the pill, not resolved. In this episode, we look back at our conversation from Episode #108 with Lisa Hendrickson-Jack where we talk about fertility, menstruation, and the vital signs of our bodies. Lisa is the author of The Fifth Vital Sign: Master Your Cycles & Optimize Your Fertility. She is a certified fertility awareness educator and a holistic reproductive health practitioner. She teaches women how to chart their menstrual cycles for natural birth control, for conception and for monitoring your overall health. Her book, The Fifth Vital Sign is all about why your cycle is one of your vital signs in your body if you are a woman and how it can play a powerful tool in diagnosing and healing our bodies. In this episode we talk about: Optimizing your fertility as the gateway to healing your body. Being a medical advocate for yourself: why it's extremely difficult and also crucial to your long-term well-being. The idea that in any examining room there are two experts: the doctor, who is the expert in a field of medicine, and the patient, who is the expert in their body and their experience. How a family history of painful periods, fibroids, and hysterectomies led her to seek out cycle charting from an early age. Lisa debunks the myth that regular ovulation is only important when you want children, because we need to recognize that the menstrual cycle is part of our entire biology and physiology. She presents an evidence-based approach to fertility awareness and menstrual cycle optimization. How the body is seen as low—base, even!—and unpredictable. That means that men and women have been culturally conditioned not to experience life through our bodies. This becomes a bigger problem for birthing and postpartum women, who can experience the trauma of birth itself and then can compound that damage by feeling like they can't or shouldn't listen to their bodies reaction to trauma in the wake of birth. By only revisiting our cycles when we decide to try to conceive, we miss out on the opportunity to come into deep understanding with our bodies and to heal ourselves rather than mask symptoms. Today, we get to talk to Lisa Hendrickson-Jack about how in taking the time to chart, learn about and understand our cycles, we can not only optimize our fertility but gain crucial information about our bodies. Join us as we talk about the menstrual cycle, fertility, and the opportunities we all have to learn more about our bodies simply by paying closer attention to them. Episode 8February 24th, 2022In this episode, Courtney and Mallory pick up where they left off in episode 2. Mallory shares a brief update of her life (and body) sans birth control and what it's like to be experiencing pimples as an adult when she thought she had her skin care routine down. Due to potential job changes and location of her current job, Mallory has been doing a DIY approach (aka research heavy, book focused) to getting her body back on track. Courtney shares her experience coming off birth control, conversations she had with her doctor and a visit to the ER. She also shares her experience with a potential PCOS diagnosis and wanting to stay off birth control. Listen as Mallory and Courtney discuss two very different experiences. The Fifth Vital Sign: Master Your Cycles & Optimize Your Fertility by Lisa Hendrickson-JackFollow us on Instagram: @UnscriptedSxEdHave questions or want more info on something? If You Are Ready to Improve Your Reproductive and Overall Health Through Cycle Syncing, You Should: Use the P.U.Z.Z.L.E. Method to change the aspects of your health that you can control Learn to listen to your bodies signals and find ways to understand what those signals mean Allow your body to heal naturally by providing it with the correct diet, stress management, and mindset Have you ever noticed your cycle syncing with women around you or even with the moon? As women, we are cyclical beings, and optimizing your cycle by syncing with the moon is one of the best things you can do to support your reproductive health and overall wellbeing. Getting Clear on Hormone Imbalance Kela Smith is the CEO and program director of the Hormone Puzzle Society, a woman's health hub for fertility, hormones, and the business of coaching. Kela works with women who are struggling with infertility and hormone imbalance and coaches them to get pregnant naturally and eliminate symptoms of hormone imbalance. She brings over 20 years of experience as a professional fitness trainer, wellness educator, and author, as well as a mama to two beautiful children. There Is a Way to Get Pregnant Naturally When Kela was told it would be nearly impossible for her to get pregnant naturally in her late 30's, she took matters into her own hands. After giving birth at 37 and again at 40, she went back to school to help women realize that there is a better alternative and it is totally possible to get pregnant naturally later in life. Our bodies have an innate capacity for healing naturally, but it is up to us to listen to our body needs so that we can provide it everything it needs to feel better, have fewer symptoms, and focus on what is in our control. It All Comes Down to the Moon The two most important things you can do to improve the syncing of your cycle start with diet and stress management. When we can follow the patterns of the moon, we can improve our reproductive health and overall physical health and well-being. Reproduction is a miracle, and when we can optimize it, not only does our health benefit but our hormones, productivity, happiness, and mood do too. Even if you are not bleeding anymore, syncing your cycle with the moon can still have massive benefits on your whole body's health. Are you ready to enjoy all of the benefits that come with syncing your cycle to the moon? Share how you are looking to improve your reproductive or overall health through syncing with me in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “I left that doctor's office, and I said ‘I am on a mission to optimize my fertility naturally', and that's exactly what I did. I figured out what I needed to eat, what my lifestyle needed to look like, my exercise was too much, my toxins were too much, I just really dove in.” (6:10) “I want to go back to Jr. High and teach all the girls, this is what a normal period is, this is how you track your cycle. Forget the algebra class, let's go with some women's health classes.” (10:32) “We are always tapping into Earth's natural energy. So that is where syncing with the moon comes in.” (20:49) “It's about listening to your body and intuitively doing what you feel like you want to do anyways based on where your hormones are.” (22:18) “I like to look at going into menopause as a rebirth. This is your second season in life. Instead of things ending, this is your new beginning!” (24:53) In This Episode What you can do to support your body's ability to heal and conceive naturally (7:49) Breaking down the different parts of your cycle and how it affects your hormones (12:43) The benefits of syncing your cycle with the moon even if you are not bleeding anymore (20:42) Learn about the Hormone P.U.Z.Z.L.E. Today, we're welcoming back registered dietitian Amanda Montalvo! We've been working together for a while now – from when she helped me on my own hormonal journey, to various collaborations, and even just sharing resources. She helps women get to the root of their hormone imbalances so they can have healthy menstrual cycles. She started her nutritional education following the traditional route, but after dealing with her own health problems when getting off of hormonal birth control, she quickly realized the value of functional medicine. After healing her acne, balancing her hormones, and learning the value of the menstrual cycle, she found her purpose in helping women create a balanced body without settling for anything less. We talk about the importance of minerals and supplementation for our anatomy, how to get started with a balanced diet, and sifting through all of the information available out there to find what works for you. It's a sad reality that most doctors realize the risks of nutrient deficiencies that come from being on the pill… Yet a majority of women are unaware of these effects until they suddenly feel exhausted, are struggling to get pregnant, or are facing other unexplained symptoms. Today I'm unpacking why hormonal birth control has this effect on your body as well as the top nutrient deficiencies you need to watch for, especially if you have been on the pill for any length of time. Tune in to hear... How my friend was shocked by the levels of deficiencies she had after coming off the pill (and how I helped her reset these levels so she could conceive) The most prevalent deficiencies we can link to being on the pill Symptoms to watch for that indicate you're having specific nutrient deficiencies in your body The top brands and products that I take and recommend for correcting your nutrient levels safely and quickly And more! Dr. Sarah Rattray joins us today as we're digging into how to improve our relationship during the fertility journey. I can't believe I'm about to celebrate 25 years of marriage in June. We met each other at our university bar called the - The Rat (yep it was a hole in the wall). I was wearing one of my super short skirts (cue 90's fashion) plus a coat with a fur collar that he called my beaver pelt (yeah he made me laugh – score a point for him). I remember how bloodshot his eyes were (nothing like cheap draft beer), what a very large school ring he was wearing on his finger (that's ring has been replaced lol), and how cute he was! Six years later we were married and then we started trying for kids. My husband is a very calm person – next to my excitable, always needs a plan (i.e. controlling nature). When I received my premature ovarian failure diagnosis he was right there by my side. The only time I got angry with him was when I wanted to get a dog and he didn't want one – (I'm not a big crier – but I broke down telling him I needed this dog – because we couldn't have kids right now). Our dog Sadie came along 18 months before our daughter, Ava, and then our son Will was born 3 years later. We've been through a lot together and no marriage is perfect – but we continue to work on ourselves and communicate with each other. And after all these years I still laugh at his jokes, he tolerates my crazy ideas and when our dog Sadie passed away – I wanted to get another dog – 4 years later he finally relented and little Rosie joined our family – and since my husband has been working at home – this dog is his constant companion and barely notices me! The fertility journey can either make your relationship stronger or it can tear you apart. As you may know, our Fab Fertile Method always includes your partner unless you are choosing to conceive by yourself, and then we can also support you. What if you find yourself nagging or criticizing your partner? What if you feel defensive or you find yourself fighting. How do we reconnect with our partners during the fertility journey? I'm excited to welcome Dr. Sarah Rattray, leading Couples Psychologist for over 30 years, who is the founder and CEO of the Couples Communication Institute, which is dedicated to helping couples achieve lasting closeness and intimacy through effective communication. In this episode you'll learn: 1) How to stop nagging and criticizing. 2) What to do when you feel contempt or not valuing your partner's feelings or opinions. 3) How do we stop being defensive and take responsibility and apologies for our actions. 4) How to reconnect with our partner and start conversations about our dreams/goals for the future. --- TIMESTAMPS: 06:28- INTRO TO TODAY'S EPISODE AND DR. Share your menstrual cycle breakthroughs with me in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “I just thought it was about birth control. So it totally blew my mind that someone could look at my chart and identify a health issue. And that subsequently when I got that under control and addressed that, that my cycle actually improved and is now within the normal range.” (9:52) “So many women believe that pain is just a part of menstruation and it is just something that we have to grin and bear. And although it is very common and a lot of women experience varying degrees of pain with their cycle, it is helpful that someone says out loud that outside of menstruation, we don’t consider pain to be normal.” (14:47) “Looking at the cycle as a diagnostic tool, you always want to remember what’s normal and what is not. And various health issues, even things you might not necessarily think of, if you are seeing a consistent pattern of cycle disruptions that are falling outside of the normal, that is a sign that we should be looking deeper into what is happening.” (24:16) “Ya I get it. We make estrogen and progesterone in our ovaries, and I get that we think that everything is just in our uterus. But we actually have a circulatory system. We have receptors for these hormones in our brain, in our breasts, in our bones. It’s not just the reproductive organs ladies, its everywhere!” (36:00) “This is not about alarming women or trying to scare them, but I feel that we need this information. So if you know that you were put on the pill for an issue, then you need to know that that issue is very likely still there.” (45:05) Resources Mentioned: Get Your Free First Chapter of The Fifth Vital Sign by Lisa Hendrickson-Jack Conceiving with Fertility Awareness Freebie Get Lisa’s Freebies Here Fertility Friday Podcast Follow Lisa on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | Pinterest EY 186: Debunking Period Myths Once and For All with Nicole Jardim EY 217: 5 Signs of Progesterone Deficiency And How To Fix It Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative

Fertility trauma is happening all around us. It’s a huge part of the journey when you’re trying to conceive. Today’s show discusses why we have to address this issue and why trauma resolution should be part of fertility treatment for everyone. Episode Highlights: What is fertility trauma? Why trauma is NOT always based on a single event Examples of when and how fertility trauma may occur Why fertility trauma is not a mental health issue, but a physiological problem Health issues and inflammation that come when we don’t “come back down” from our body’s stress response Why you need to understand the physiology of what your body does---and how you can help it How trauma resolution can “stack the deck in your favor” Why stress is NOT the cause of infertility Why my clients are having fertility success when they put the puzzle pieces together Retraining your body with breath work, progressive relaxation, stretching, and dropping your shoulders The resulting changes that happen to the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems---all of which play a vital part in getting pregnant Resources: Optimize Your Fertility: http://bit.ly/optfertdm Path to Baby: http://bit.ly/pathtobabydm Instagram: healthy.highriskpregnancy

#108 — Optimizing your fertility as the gateway to healing your body As young women, we’re taught about our menstrual cycle in relationship to two things: our periods and pregnancy. In an attempt to avoid pregnancy, fix irregular cycles, or alter heavy periods, we’re often prescribed The Pill in our teens and twenties. We are flummoxed when we come off the pill after years or decades of use to find our old problems return immediately – they’ve not healed themselves, only been hidden by the regulating power of the pill. In this episode we talk about: Being a medical advocate for yourself: why it’s extremely difficult and also crucial to your long-term well-being. The idea that in any examining room there are two experts: the doctor, who is the expert in a field of medicine, and the patient, who is the expert in their body and their experience. How a family history of painful periods, fibroids, and hysterectomies led her to seek out cycle charting from an early age Lisa debunks the myth that regular ovulation is only important when you want children, because we need to recognize that the menstrual cycle is part of our entire biology and physiology. She presents an evidence-based approach to fertility awareness and menstrual cycle optimization. How the body is seen as low—base, even!—and unpredictable. That means that men and women have been culturally conditioned not to experience life through our bodies. This becomes a bigger problem for birthing and postpartum women, who can experience the trauma of birth itself and then can compound that damage by feeling like they can’t or shouldn’t listen to their bodies reaction to trauma in the wake of birth. Join us as we talk about the menstrual cycle, fertility, and the opportunities we all have to learn more about our bodies simply by paying closer attention to them.
