Happy International Women's Day! In honour of International Women's Day, Fempower is releasing this special episode on the Powerful Women, the Mana Wahine, of Hawai'i and the Power of Land. This episode was recorded live onsite in Waikiki, Hawai'i and is a cumulation of Dr. Kraj's research and learning as a Fulbright Scholar on exchange. Dr. Kraj works with Indigenous communities, sustainability and community power for energy resilience. In this episode, Dr. Kraj speaks with Native Hawaiians Aunty Ku'uipo Kumukahi, an entertainer, award-winning recording artist and record producer, as well as an educator, social worker and administrator, currently the director of the Ho'okela Hawaiian Cultural Center at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki, and Aunty Jenine Heleloa, director of the Hawaiian Music Perpetuation Society, founded by Aunty Ku'uipo. They discuss the power of land, the proper way to pronounce Hawaiian words, the importance of reciprocity in Hawaiian cultural values, and the deeper meaning of ALOHA. This powerful trio of women get to the depths of what is means to be part of a Matriarchial society, the Wahine (women) of Hawaii and the importance of reverence for the land and its people in the preservation and conservation of the land for future generations, and our need to Malama (take care of) the land. This episode is filled with golden nuggets of wisdom from Hawaiian values and teachings. And you'll get a treat of Hawaiian Pidgin language and get to know what the locals really think. Of course we talk about the Sustainability of this remote and sacred land, that energy is everything and the interconnectedness of it all; and Aunty Ku'uipo tells us about the power of poetry in preserving the land, the history of the place and its people and the protection of land rights - and how she set precedent in a court case using mele (song) and hula (dance) to make a case. The Mana Wahine of Hawaii remind us of how powerful we all can be, when we come together, as careholders of our land and resources: "Give someone kuliana and you awaken their mana." -Twinkle Borgess, Wai'anae. Guests Michela Bedard of PERIOD. and Claire Coder of Aunt Flow discuss important menstrual health issues. With 50% of the population menstruating, it is shocking to see the degree of inequities that still exist. This podcast episode is intended to raise awareness and instill a sense of urgency about menstrual health equity and why having a shared language around “normal” periods is critical. **Thank you to Myovant Sciences for sponsoring this episode.** We cover the following menstrual health issues: Why menstrual health equity is important and why inequity still remains How menstrual health equity differs across race, gender, and socioeconomic statuses The negative societal impact of menstrual health inequity and how equity can positively impact us all The role each of us can play to advance the menstrual health equity movement “In the United States, eight states have passed legislation requiring middle schools and high schools, sometimes elementary schools, to offer free period products in the bathroom, not the nurse's office in the bathroom. And why that matters is if you think about what happens in the bathroom versus the nurse's office. Bathrooms are for natural bodily functions. You go to the nurse's office when you're sick.” - Claire Coder, Aunt Flow “Policy follows culture. We're starting to see culture change. We're starting to see social media deal with menstruation and starting to see more femtech companies pop up. We're seeing Claire's Aunt Flow company be successful. We're seeing hundreds of PERIOD. chapters being formed every year. But the policy implications haven't really caught up yet. They're just starting to.” - Michela Bedard, PERIOD. Have you ever wondered how guidelines are set for the care that you should receive by your doctor during your pregnancy at childbirth, and then after you deliver your child? The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, otherwise known as ACOG, do set those guidelines, and they recently updated the information on their seventh edition book that you can find on Amazon, Your Pregnancy and Childbirth. I interviewed OB GYN Dr. Holly Cummings, a Assistant Profession of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology at U Penn, who answers some of the questions around some of the surprising guidelines and how they came about and the role that women should play to ensure that they have a successful and healthy pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care. With the success of the recent episode on orgasm with Dr Rachel Rubin, I wanted to bring back another important topic - men's sexual health. This episode is an interview with Dr. Paul Gittens, a leading specialist in sexual function for men and women. He discusses the challenges men face to even get to a doctor, much less receive treatment. The cultural norms of men just "toughing it out" or not complaining have undercut their willingness to pursue the right care.Dr. Gittens also covers:Erectile difficultiesLow libidioPsychological componentsRecommended/proven therapies and treatment options, including non-medicinal approachesMale infertility and the hope of treatment"Men's health is such a big topic. It starts when boys are young. It's important that we instill in our young boys that we don't have to be the tough guys. If something's wrong, they need to talk about it. We also need to educate older men as well. By doing that, men's health will improve." Dr. Paul GittensRelated episodes:Transforming Male FertilityPain with Sex? After exhausting all of her options in the conventional healthcare system, she was put in contact with a doctor who was an “anti-aging” practitioner. She finally received the appropriate diagnosis, her symptoms resolved and she got back on her feet and joined the world of functional medicine. In August 2019, Dr. Renee started Kaspira Elite Health Consulting, LLC.
