In this episode of Resiliency Radio with Dr. Jill, Dr. Jill Carnahan welcomes Dr. Jen Pfleghaar for a heartfelt and practical discussion on navigating perimenopause with confidence, resilience, and hope. Together, they explore why more women are experiencing hormonal symptoms earlier than ever before, how stress and environmental toxins contribute to hormonal imbalance, and why a personalized approach is essential for optimal health during midlife transitions. Dr. Jen shares her unique perspective as a double board-certified physician who combines evidence-based medicine with faith-centered wellness strategies to help women reclaim their energy, clarity, and joy. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, fatigue, sleep disturbances, mood changes, or hormone fluctuations, this episode provides actionable insights to help you understand your body and thrive through perimenopause.
In this episode of The Hormone Genius Podcast, we sit down with Jen Winkler—wife, homeschooling mom, and functional health and hormone coach—for a deeply honest and hope-filled conversation about what it really looks like to heal the female body. After years of doing everything “right,” Jen still found herself struggling with epilepsy, PCOS, insulin resistance, and anxiety. Like so many women, she followed the conventional advice—yet her symptoms persisted. Instead of settling, she went deeper. Through studying nutrition, hormones, and metabolic health, Jen began to shift her approachfrom controlling and restricting her body to actually supporting it. That shift changed everything. Under medical supervision, Jen was able to reverse many of her symptoms and even reduce her epilepsy medication. But her story doesn't stop there. One of the most powerful parts of her journey has been learning how to reintroduce foods she once feared, especially carbohydrates and witnessing the transformation in her gut health, metabolism, and overall hormonal balance. Through before-and-after gut testing, she saw firsthand how the body responds when it's nourished instead of deprived. Now, as a National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach and Functional Blood Chemistry Specialist, Jen helps women step away from rigid diet rules, like extreme keto or carnivore and move toward a more balanced, whole-food approach that supports long-term healing. This episode challenges the idea that restriction equals health, and instead invites women into a more sustainable, personalized way of living. We also address a major gap in women's healthcare: the over-reliance on hormonal birth control as a first-line solution. Jen shares why she believes most hormonal imbalances can be addressed at the root without defaulting to suppression, and how Natural Family Planning offers women a real, effective alternative for avoiding pregnancy. In this episode, we cover: Jen's journey through epilepsy, PCOS, insulin resistance, and anxiety Why “doing everything right” still wasn't enough—and what changed The connection between metabolism, hormones, and overall health Transitioning out of restrictive diets like keto and carnivore Why reintroducing carbohydrates can support thyroid, gut, and hormonal health What gut testing can reveal, and how her results dramatically improved How symptoms act as signals, not problems to silence Supporting insulin resistance and PCOS through a root-cause approach Jen also shares her work helping women navigate complex hormonal challenges, including insulin resistance, PCOS, and metabolic dysfunction and you can read more by checking out Natural Womanhoods article on this topic here: https://naturalwomanhood.org/intermittent-fasting-for-pcos/ This conversation is for the woman who feels stuck… Who has tried the diets, followed the rules, and still isn't seeing results. Hormones influence nearly every aspect of how we feel, from energy levels and mood to metabolism and overall well-being. World-renowned New York Times bestselling author, professor, researcher, activist, and musician, Neal Barnard, MD, of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, has spent decades studying how nutrition and lifestyle choices can support the body's natural hormonal balance. It's important to understand how food, stress, and daily habits interact with the endocrine system. When we do, we can begin to see that many hormone-related struggles may be more responsive to change in those areas than we once believed. Dr. Barnard will share how the body naturally regulates hormones and empowers us to make choices that support balance, vitality, and long-term health. Tatiana Fogt from the Bedside Podcast is our guest today! We'll be talking all about healing hormones, unraveling shame and upgrading sexual pleasure. Tatiana shares about her own hormone journey, which started with a bad experience on Yas. She saw first-hand in her early 20's that not all prescription synthetic hormones will work with every body. Tatiana then experienced hormonal acne after coming off of Yas, and developed a desire to learn how to manage hormones in natural non-prescription ways. After this extensive, self-led learning journey, she decided that the topic of sexual health needed a rebrand - one that she could offer because of her background in marketing and design. Now, she hosts an incredible platform where people can find the information they've been looking for around sexual health and wellness. Her podcast has recently discussed everything from relationship attachment styles to reducing cortisol levels to defining sensuality, and she's helping her audience grow their knowledge and confidence around relationships and sex. On this episode we discuss common misconceptions around libido, desire, and the diverse, natural ebb and flow of what turns each individual human on or off. Tatiana also shares some good insight about how we can communicate with our partners without hurting feelings, and about cultivating different types intimacy within our relationships. We discuss how to open up better communication with a partner. Then, we share some tips on how to re-write old shame scripts. We talk about how we learned to be in charge of our own destinies, become who we want to be, and feel more secure in our own bodies. We describe what good communication might look like for us in our respective relationships, and we express our gratitude that we've been able to to step in to our true, loving, wild selves and live fuller lives. We talk about how pleasure can be defined more broadly to include play, rest, enjoyment and fulfillment. Then, we end the episode on the topic of shifting generational habits and hangups, and the importance of creating space in our lives for what we truly want and desire. I love what Tatiana has to share about deciding she was done waiting on anything or anyone, and just making moves in her own life, career and calling. Rejuvenated Women: Impeccable Health for High Performing Women
How strong is your support network of close friends that you can be open and real with? Personally, this is an area I've struggled with a lot as a career driven woman. Community is also something that plays a huge role in our over all health and hormone balance. This episode unpacks why community is so important to our hormones and gives you some things to think about to strengthen your own community. I also share some new things I'm working on and am really excited about because they focus on community at the core of our healing journey.Links mentioned in this episode:The Emergent Women Circle-www.emergentwomencircle.com Subscribe to Dr. Alex: https://emergent-women.ck.page/0b2e48c7cb Episode Transcript:[00:00] So I don't know about you, but I have struggled through my adult life to maintain close friendships and relationships and community among other women.[00:11] And I've been thinking about this a.[00:13] Lot lately because this is also a significant part of having balance and having our hormones work. And we're going to unpack what that means today. But I also think that for those of us who identify as high achievers, we're driven and we're always after the next thing. That's a lot of what being a high achiever is about. It can be hard to prioritize friendship because we're already stretched so thin in our careers and in our personal and family lives. And so it's something that gets missed.[00:52] Welcome to The Selfless Syndrome Show, where we help women executives and entrepreneurs rise through Adversity, connect to their intuition, transform their hormones, and get their energy back. This is the show where we go beyond asking how do I treat my symptoms? And instead examine how do I truly heal, transform my hormones, and change my life? We are here to bring you outside the box ideas, interviews, and action steps focused in the areas of health, relationships, and our career, all three of which have a huge impact on our hormones. My name is Dr. Alex Swenson Ridley. I'm your host, mentor, speaker, author, entrepreneur, and thought leader on hormones and work life balance for high achieving women. I'm also a wife's, mom, and stepmom to four boys and a furball. And I'm a woman whose own life experience and journey from Adversity and the resulting hormonal chaos to finding hormonal harmony has led to me helping other women break with convention and find the tools they need to not just survive, but thrive. Ready to dive in? Let's go.[01:53] What I started to see and really have recognized, especially when I was writing my book on Selfless Syndrome that came out in January, is that we're missing this really important component that we were designed to be in relationship with others and in community. And I'm not talking about the pandemic or pre or being introverted or extroverted or that has nothing to do with any of this. There is something that we gain from being in relationship with others, particularly peers and those who we can relate to in a peer way. Women who get us and understand us, that actually helps us to de escalate from stress. We as women, go through something called tend and befriend. And the way I think about this is I'm going to tell you to share a little story here that I actually shared in my book. But I grew up in Vermont, which is actually where I'm recording this because I'm here helping my mom recover from a pelvic. Broken pelvis. But when I was a kid, we would go out and go hiking all the time. And there was a stay where we were driving to what was my favorite.[02:57] Mountain because we...

Today's guest on Healing Hormones is Avanti Kumar-Singh, MD, a former ER doctor turned ayurvedic healer. Finding the ancient Indian medical practice after – you guessed it – experiencing her own health and wellness issues that traditional medicine could not address in a way that relieved her symptoms, she knew there had to be a better way. Ayurveda relies on a natural approach to physical and mental health; getting closer to nature is the goal. In this conversation, she gives us very practical tools of how we can start to implement its principles into our lives, simply, so that we can start to heal the body. We also talk about finding balance between ancient and modern practices, another common theme we hear on this podcast. In this respect, Dr. Singh's is another voice that sings in those gray areas – because there really is no black and white when it comes to staying healthy.
