August is using its social media prowess to talk about period care. Over the past two years, August -- which sells organic period care products -- has grown from an idea into a national brand selling at stores like Target. It has been able to grow that quickly in part because of its TikTok following. Co-founder Nadya Okamoto decided early on that she would grow August via TikTok and while she didn't have a following in 2021, today she has 4 million followers. "I was not on TikTok at all," she said. Okamoto was a featured speaker at the Modern Retail DTC Summit this week, and her interview is this week's Modern Retail Podcast. One of the big things she focuses on is making relatable content -- and a lot of it. During the early days, "for like six months I posted 80 to 100 videos a day, personally," she said. This was both so that she could train herself to be a good TikTok personality -- but also because audiences evolved and August wanted to be constantly testing and changing the content it produces. And the company has found that real, unvarnished content that talks about periods is what usually resonates the best. This strategy helped propel both Okamoto as an online personality, but also August as a brand -- and she is quick to note that she built August so that its content and its branding would stand on its own. "I don't want it to be Nadya equals August," she said. "I wanted it to be like I am top-of-funnel -- I'm the August number-one fan." But there's another layer to August's digital strategy to goes beyond engaging millions of followers. The company has had an online community built on the platform Geneva since it started. This, according to Okamoto, was a way to grow its power users and make a space for the company to directly connect with customers. Today, the group has more than 5,000 members. One big thing she constantly keeps in mind is that even though her brand is very prevalent on social media, it needs to understand that the community aspect goes much deeper. "Social media is not community to us," she said. "[It's] an audience." But for that audience, August is focused on making sure it is staying true to its authentic roots -- talking plainly and openly about period care and menstrual issues. But that it isn't going too far. As Okomoto put it, it's about "making sure that we're not provocative for the sake of being provocative."
At age 16, Nadya Okamoto started PERIOD.org, an organization fighting to end period poverty and stigma, and at age 19 she ran for public office to fight for menstruators' reproductive rights. Since then, she wrote Period Power: A Manifesto for the Menstrual Movement and co-founded August, a lifestyle brand working to reimagine periods. She has been recognized on Forbes 30 Under 30 and People Magazine's Women Changing the World lists. In this episode, we cover how to change the period shame and stigma in our culture; period poverty, the tampon tax, and why they affect all of us; and what you need to know about the patriarchy and period health. Nadya also explains how capitalism helped her create more positive social change, why prioritizing your financial freedom and well-being is not selfish, and how her need for external validation was masked as confidence. This episode will heal the preteen in you who felt embarrassed about her changing body, ignite a passion for changing society and stigma, and rethink everything you believe about confidence. Today we're learning from Nadya Okamoto, the founder of August, the lifestyle period brand that makes sustainable period care that actually works. Nadya is one of those women that is impossible not to be impressed by and excited about, she's a Harvard grad, author, speaker, NGO founder, gen z marketing agency founder and now august as well as a Tiktoker that's grown to 4.1 million followers. Crazy stuff. The gem in this episode is when she steps through her thoughts on Tiktok. It's pretty crazy! We also touch on the importance of building a hyper-inclusive hyper-diverse community (all whilst maintaining a special sense of intimacy), growing slowly and thoughtfully and ensuring your cost of acquisition stays as low as possible. I love Nadya's key piece of mental health advice, centred all around taking time to really take care of yourself. You have to take care of yourself so you can really sustain your energy. Speaking of which, sleep is everything! And that's something I can get behind. Being better about taking time to not think about your company is so important. Spending time with the people you love, that's what will remind you: “this is what I feel so fulfilled doing.” Having that space to be re-ground yourself is so key because you're able to come back to your work with a new refound trust in your instincts. That's what you need in leadership. To trust your gut. You have to be making big decisions, but if you have trust in yourself and what your values are you feel much more empowered in making them. She has been recognized on the lists of Forbes 30 under 30, Bloomberg 50 “Ones to Watch” and People Magazine's Women Changing the World.HerMD recognizes that sex and gender exist on spectrums and that our patients have diverse gender identities. In some instances, HerMD uses the word "woman" (and the pronouns "she" and "her") to describe patients or individuals whose sex assigned at birth was female whether they identify as female, male, or non-binary. As gender language continues to evolve, we strive to include more inclusive language in our published content and within our clinics.
Nadya Okamoto is the Founder & CEO of August, a company that makes sustainable tampons and pads. She is also an influencer with 3 million TikTok followers. Entrepreneurship is in her bones. She started her first non profit, at the age of 16, to find a solution to a problem that she faced growing up. She is now 24 and has started multiple companies. The non-profit is still growing. Nadya has grown from a place of understanding and processing who she is. She is incredibly self aware, unapologetic, humble, has a smart approach and a very strong worth ethic. Despite her accomplishments, her level of “experience” is often questioned. In this episode, Nadya walks you through her childhood and many personal moments that have shaped her career. She discusses her struggle with mental health, self hatred and a dangerous work ethic as well as the positives of social media and how her insecurities keep her humble. Nadya does not expect perfection. Nadya also reveals her unique selling point and how she had to overcome being a workaholic to find her superpower. Lastly, Nadya and Amy Jo discuss the number 1 lesson Nadya has learned, which is to invest in yourself. She talks about what that looks like for her. The takeaways from this conversation are vital for entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. Whether you are 15 or 50, we could all take some notes from the way that Nadya has persevered and created change. Hi everyone! Doone here - your host and hype girl. Thanks for tuning in to my solo episode this week. I'm recording this from my little hotel room in sunny New York city and I'm feeling so grateful to be in this beautiful city. Today, I want to dive into a topic that I know is going to be relevant for every single one of you listening in. And that's the topic of female health. Women have been underserved by the healthcare industry for a really damn long time. But now finally, with more women in STEM, and more female entrepreneurial disrupters, the future of femtech is looking bright. Firstly, we learn from Dr. Amy Divaraniya, the founder of Oova, an incredibly innovative women's health company. Amy has more than 10 years of experience as a data scientist and has both led and published original research in the areas of personal genomics and biomarker discovery. Next, I introduce Nadya Okamoto from August. Or you might know her better as the “period girl”. August is the lifestyle period brand that makes sustainable period care that actually works. And Nadya is one of those women that is impossible not to be impressed by and excited about. She's a Harvard grad, author, speaker, NGO founder, gen z marketing agency founder and now august as well as a TikToker that's grown to 2.4 million followers. Thirdly, I dive into the story of Bethany Edwards and her creation Lia, the world's first flushable pregnancy test. Lia is an earth-friendly healthcare company on a mission to revolutionize reproductive health through the development of innovative products. The company's first product, which came to market just last year, is the FDA cleared Lia pregnancy test. Next I'm introducing you to Alexandra Fine, a real favourite from the show, and one of the women behind Dame. Dame is leading a sexual wellness revolution as a women-powered resource for game-changing products for pleasure and supportive content. Our fifth story is that of Krystal Duhaney the Founder of Milky Mama. After having her second child and returning to work, Krystal struggled with her milk supply and realized that there were very few resources for breastfeeding mothers in the same predicament. So, in November of 2015, Milky Mama was born. Today, Milky Mama is dedicated to educating, supporting and empowering parents to have the best breastfeeding journey possible. I next introduce you to another woman modernizing sustainable period care, Cherie Hoeger with Saalt. In 2018, Saalt launched its flagship product—the Saalt period cup—with the vision of making cleaner, more sustainable period care accessible to everyone. Last but not least, I want to shine a light on Sally Mueller and her company Womaness. Womaness is a collection of modern, innovative menopause products developed for women, by women that offer solutions from head to toe, and everything in between. These are all stories that have really stuck with me in the last year, an incredible little bank of inspiration, and if I can pass that feeling onto even just one of you today that's a mission very much accomplished. Let's get straight to it! This is me, for Female Startup Club. It might be your first instinct to categorize menstruation as a feminine/women's issue–but this episode calls on you to think about it in a deeper and different way. Nadya Okamoto is joined by Chesley Chan, Chief of Staff for August and Max Payne, a former engagement lead for August, for an eye-opening discussion on the need for expanded support and education in the period space that is gender inclusive and affirming as a human biological process. Max then takes the lead to sit down with Schuyler Bailar, an internationally celebrated inspirational speaker, author, and advocate, as well as the first transgender NCAA D1 men's athlete, for a discussion that unpacks trans inclusion, body acceptance, mental health awareness, and an exploration of the word “menstruator” as either reductive or inclusive. Welcome to The Period Feels, a podcast that answers the period questions you've always had, but didn't know who to ask. The Period Feels is a podcast born out of a surplus of questions that August leadership were constantly fielding from their community, and the team is here to give you the answers. August was co-founded by host Nadya Okamoto, and joining her on the mic is August's Creative Producer Sam De La Cruz and Content Director Nadya (Neddy) Eddy. In this inaugural episode, the group answers a question from a community member who wants to know about the individual journeys that eventually brought them together, which turned out to be a combination of serendipity and a love for accessible period products. And wasting no time getting into period talk, the group shares their first period stories and how their conversations about periods with friends and family have evolved over the years.
