As some of you may know, September is PCOS Awareness Month. So, before we move into October, I want to wrap this month up with a replay of one of my favourite interviews with registered nutritional therapist, Megan Hallett. I'll leave the old intro in as it gives you a dive into Megan and her work, but one of the reasons why I wanted to share this episode is because we've been talking a lot about blood sugar on the show lately and in this episode, Megan shares how to eat for blood sugar balance if you're fully plant-based, as it can take a little extra work for some of people and Megan wrote an entire cookbook dedicated to this topic. Megan Hallett is the co-author of The Happy Balance, which she wrote with period expert Nicole Jardim. I absolutely love this book and recommend it to everyone. The cookbook not only gives us an awesome quick stop tour of our hormones and why health foundations like sleep and stable blood sugar are so crucial, but it also includes 60 beautifully nourishing, hormone feeding and blood sugar balancing plant-based recipes. Megan is a certified Integrative Nutrition Coach, is studying at CNM to become a Nutritional Therapist and is also a food writer and recipe developer. As you can tell from the length of this interviewed, I LOVED talking to Megan and ended up getting really specific with her about the ins and outs of balancing our hormones. In this episode, we talk about her experience with PCOS, managing PCOS with blood sugar balancing, what blood sugar balance actually is and why it's important for endometriosis and so much more, as you'll come to hear! Megan's book is available on Amazon and wherever good books are sold - and right here! The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is created by Rupa Health, the best way to order, track & manage results from 30+ lab companies in one place for free. The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is a weekly one-on-one conversation with renowned medical experts, specialists, and pioneers who are influencing the way we look at our health and wellbeing. This week we're joined by Nicole Jardim, a Certified Women's Health Coach. In this episode, Nicole Jardim joins Dr. Carrie Jones to share how to fix your periods and balance your hormones naturally. Nicole is a Certified Women's Health Coach, writer, speaker, mentor, and creator of the Fix Your Period program. She is the author of Fix Your Period: 6 Weeks to Banish Bloating, Conquer Cramps, Manage Moodiness, and Ignite Lasting Hormone Balance, and the co-author of The Happy Balance, a recipe book filled with over eighty hormone-balancing recipes. Nicole is also the host of The Period Party podcast and has been called on as a women's health expert for sites such as The Guardian, Well+Good, and Healthline. Key Takeaways: What does a normal period look like? Nicole highlights that a true period is always preceded by ovulation. If you don't ovulate in a particular cycle, then you're basically experiencing what is known as an anovulatory cycle or hormone withdrawal bleeding. Normal periods should last between three and seven days long. If they're over seven days, you might experience estrogen and progesterone issues. Painful cramps during the period are another sign of an unhealthy or abnormal period. What is a normal period flow? A range of sixty milliliters is considered ideal for the entire period. Over eighty milliliters is a heavy period, and under twenty-five is a very light period. The normal period range is somewhere between thirty and fifty milliliters. Heavy versus light periods Heavy periods are often caused by a reproductive hormone imbalance, insulin resistance, ovarian dysfunction, or other hormone-related condition. An excessively light period usually indicates a lack of estrogen, nutrients, ovulation, or thyroid issues. What is PMS? Premenstrual syndrome, or PMS, ranges from physical like bloating, crampiness, heaviness, headaches, migraines, and body aches, to mental and emotional symptoms, like being quick to anger, impatient, frustrated, or anxious. Though some of these symptoms are normal, many are driven by inflammation, detoxification problems, blood sugar issues, and lifestyle. What is PMDD? Premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD, is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which causes a range of emotional, mental, and physical symptoms, and somewhere between two and eight percent of women worldwide experience it. I first took note of Nicole from her feature in the documentary "The Business of Birth Control". She is the author of the book "Fix Your Period", which now proudly sits on my shelf. Nicole is regularly harangued by OBGYNs on social media for spreading 'misinformation' about menstrual cycles, but Nicole's message is simple: bleeding induced by hormonal contraception is not the same as a bleed from your natural cycle. And she's right. Her work goes deep on how to remedy any issues that arise without the menstrual cycle, and she is an advocate and educator on fertility awareness methods. In short, Nicole is a gift to the women's health community. [00:09:00] - Nicole is regularly called out by OBGYNs for “misinforming” women that ovulatory bleeding is different from bleeding while on hormonal contraception (they're wrong; she's right...and that's not merely my opinion. It's basic physiology) [00:13:30] - Why is menstruation important? [00:20:45] - An overview of the menstrúal cycle (ovulation is the star of the cycle; not menstruation) [00:26:45] - What do estrogen and progesterone do in the body? We are moving (to France!) and so today's episode is a replay of a very early episode, that some of you may have not yet listened to! I see chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation a lot in our community - so I really encourage you to listen to this episode because healing is more than nutrition and supplements. If you were eating a totally anti-inflammatory diet but you were experiencing chronic stress, would that have an impact on your pain levels? My answer? It's very, very likely. There are two key factors that cause further inflammation in our bodies when it comes to our lifestyle. Stress, tension and danger signals are often experienced in two places in the body: the neck and shoulders, and the pelvic floor. The body is trying to protect the vital organs in the pelvis and abdomen and so in response to stress, our body believes there's danger and clenches and tightens the pelvic floor. This creates further pain, nerve sensitivity, muscle and organ dysfunction and distortion and ultimately up-regulates inflammation as a result. The brain is designed to recognise stress and danger signals as a priority because it's programmed to keep us safe. Because of this, it's much easier and quicker for the body to recognise danger signals and to send these signals (which can translate to pain signals) to the brain. Stress and danger signals actually cause heightened pain levels because your body is hyper sensitive and is hyper aware of any indications of threat, and so will send pain signals to let you know something is wrong. In this episode I'm going to dive into how to create more SIMS (safety in my system signals) in your every day life to calm down your nervous system and ultimately calm down that inflammatory response. I provide questions, activities and step by step guidance on how to create an ant—inflammatory lifestyle for endometriosis! So, as I said in my last episode about this, I am not a cardiologist, and I am not a health coach specialising in heart disease or any heart related conditions. As an endometriosis health coach however, I do see a lot of postural tachycardia syndrome and mast cell activation syndrome, both of which can cause symptoms like chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, palpitations, etc. and so many of my clients do have to go through these processes and tests to get the right diagnoses. The Impact of Roe v. Wade In The Endo Community

Last week I wanted to take a minute to process the Roe v Wade verdict, and to deal with my own personal health issues, as the latter half of last week I was having heart tests performed for two days and was travelling back and forth to London, whilst not feeling too well as a result of the tests. I think all of us had info coming at us from so many different directions last week and I didn't want to add to that, especially without having the time or headspace to process it all and actually think through what I wanted to say. The other difficulty I face as an endo practitioner, is of course, the sensitivity of this topic within our community. I understand that discussions around abortion are hard, given that many in the community struggle with infertility, so this is a very difficult line to tread and in truth, because of the power of social media these days, I am worried that I'll end up getting trolled or cancelled for this statement. So, before I proceed, I want to make it clear that I respect all views and opinions, even if they differ from mine - but the short of it is, that I was truly, deeply saddened by the Roe v Wade verdict this past week. So, some of you may know that for the past, I guess, three years now, I've been deep in the trenches with interstitial cystitis. I developed interstitial cystitis almost about 17 or so years ago, following a car accident when I was 17. I broke my left hip, my pelvis, my spine and my pubic ramus and was temporarily paralysed, and was then on bed rest for several weeks. During this time I had a catheter put in, and unbeknown to me, this delivered the first of two chronic infections. Of course, for the first year any unusual symptoms and pain I had in the pelvic region I put down to the car accident, and then when I started developing endo symptoms a year later, once I was diagnosed, I assumed all bladder issues were caused by my endo. On Christmas Day 2021, I thought I had a heart attack. It was Christmas night actually, maybe even the early hours of Boxing Day and I was woken up by one of the worst pains I have ever experienced. It felt like a metal clamp had locked around my heart and was squeezing it to the point of bursting. The pain radiated into my left arm and down into my hand, and my hand and lower arm were tingling and sort of numb. My chest was tight, it felt like I had a weight on it and I felt like I was struggling to get enough oxygen in. I still don't know if I had a heart attack that night. My body and mind tells me it was, but at this stage, I'll never really know – because I didn't call an ambulance. Yes. I know it was stupid, and I regret the decision now, but there was a reason. You Don't Have to Manage Endo Perfectly

I've been noticing something for a while now. It's always been a problem in society overall, I think it's an issue that takes different form depending on the generation and the situation, and I've been acutely away of it throughout my endo career, but today I really want to directly speak to it because I am seeing it so much lately. Today I want to tell you that you don't have to manage endo perfectly. In fact, I am urging you not to try to. And this is what I mean. In the past say two years, I've worked with a couple of hundred people, either one to one or in my course, and for the most part, many people do take a balanced approach, but in some, I've noticed this trend to be very black and white with endo management, very full throttle, very all or nothing. And I get it. Having had an eating disorder for the best part of my adult life and all of my teenage years, I understand how easy it is to become obsessive about certain food choices. And as a perfectionist and overachiever, I also understand the desire to want to go all in, to want to try and make changes all at once, to try and do all the endo management things all at the same time. But here's the thing. It's not sustainable. Trying to do everything all at once and to stick to restrictive behaviours doesn't lead to long-term successful endo management, it leads to resentment, stress, and exhaustion, and perhaps, even disordered eating. You'll probably end up giving up because you feel so miserable, maybe not knowing what's working because you're trying so much at once and perhaps getting stuck in a binge-restrict cycle with your eating. So, if you're not really sure if this applies to you or you're just not very clear on what I'm talking about, I wanted to share some examples. Let's get social! Four Easy Home Remedies for Constipation with Endo Belly

Today we're talking about the endo belly, but more specifically, constipation. Firstly, let's quickly look at what the endo belly is. The ‘endo belly' is not actually a medical term, but instead is a name the community has coined in reference to the severe bloating we often experience. So, there isn't technically a set definition, but it is generally thought to be severe bloating/swelling that tends to be attributed to endometriosis and is sometimes accompanied by pain. Some experts, articles and endo patients also include gut problems within this term too, but not always. My definition, from my training and from seeing so many clients with these symptoms is that the endo belly is exaggerated/severe bloating, often accompanied by gut symptoms, pain or discomfort - but it is not always caused by endometriosis directly (there are normally contributing factors behind the endo belly). Many people with endo suffer with this bloating or distension plus IBS issues like constipation, and often these can be caused by issues like gut dysbiosis (which is common with endo), small intestine bacterial overgrowth (which according to research could be affecting 80% of us with endo), adhesions from surgery and bowel endometriosis, to name just a few of the contributing factors. So, constipation can result from one or all of these issues, and the bloating itself could also come from one or all of these causes (and the many others not listed here), but the constipation itself could also be worsening your bloating. When you're constipated, you're going to get a build-up of waste, gas and bacteria in your intestines, and the bacteria will also have longer to ferment the food you've eaten, resulting in more gas being produced than usual.  So, what can we do about it? Ideally and in the long-term, we want to address the root cause of your constipation, because at home remedies are unlikely to solve the root cause alone, however, whilst you're on that journey, at home remedies can make a real difference. Full credit to my tutors Dr. Allison Siebecker and Dr. Nirala Jacobi for these great tools.    Drink hot water in the morning Yep, it's that simple. Drinking hot or warm water, like a herbal tea, and making a chewing movement as you drink it, can actually trigger motility (which basically means movement) in the large intestine. It works best if you drink it slowly, though experiment with what works for you.  I wouldn't necessarily wait for constipation to happen to try this but bring it into your daily routine, so you start to build a habit of a morning bowel movement.   Try flax or chia seeds Both flax and chia seeds help to create a bowel movement, but which one you use really depends on your personal reactions to the seeds. Chia is low FODMAP at serving sizes up to 24 grams, so as a result, chia is often safe for people with IBS and even, in many cases, people with SIBO. Chia seeds provide a large amount of fibre, and whilst many people with IBS and SIBO can't tolerate a lot of fibre, chia seeds are often well tolerated so it's a great way to top up your fibre content without a flare – and we all know how important fibre is! You may have noticed that chia seeds absorb a lot of water, and so as a result, they can soften a stool by adding a gel-like consistency to food in your intestinal tract and by adding bulk, which can help form a stool and move it along. Now, be guided by your personal reaction because with SIBO, adding fibre often makes things worse and because everyone is unique, even though chia is generally thought to be safe for SIBO, some people still react – which means their constipation could get worse. So, start slowly with a small amount, like a tablespoon and increase to two if you find you don't have any adverse reactions – just don't exceed 24 g to be safe, although 24g of chia in one sitting is a huge amount, so I doubt you will! Always add a liquid to your chia first, to create the gel-like consistency. You could make a chia pudding with almond milk, add them to oats or add them to a smoothie. Now, with flax, I tend to see that's less well tolerated with people who have SIBO due to the fibre content but see how you respond. To be on the safe side, a low FODMAP serving of flax is 15 grams, or one tablespoon, so start there, though you may personally be able to tolerate more. The serving size found to be effective for constipation in research is 20g.   Some of you may be wondering if flax is safe for endo. Flax contains plant compounds known as phytoestrogens, which mimic oestrogen in the body. Lots of studies show flaxseeds as being beneficial for people who have low levels of oestrogen as it raises them (just like soy) and yet because like soy, phytoestrogens are weaker than our own oestrogen, it should in theory help to lower oestrogen dominance and certainly has shown that with many people. But it seems to depend on the individual response as I've personally experienced worsening endometriosis symptoms with flax and I know my tutors Dr Jessica Drummond and Nicole Jardim have observed similar reactions too. One factor to consider is that the issue isn't the phytoestrogens in the flax but potentially the state of the flax. Flax is very vulnerable to going rancid and becoming inflammatory. It's better to store whole flaxseeds in an airtight container in the fridge, for shorter periods of time and then grind flax seeds fresh (if required to be ground), rather than storing them in a cupboard, in a bag, already ground. So, experiment and see how you feel! You can add flax to oats and smoothies, or you could stir it into yoghurt or a chia pudding.   Eat more fat Adequate levels of fat can aid with constipation, as fat triggers large intestine motility.  Now, you do have to be careful because too much fat can sometimes cause gastro issues in people with IBS, but generally with my clients and students, we focus on two golf ball sized servings of fat with each meal, to support blood sugar levels, and that amount is often well tolerated. If you're not sure, try a lesser serving size and also try fats that are lower in FODMAPs to avoid aggravating your symptoms.  Now, just to be clear, I am in no way telling you to start a low FDOMAP diet, that has to be prescribed by a doctor or dietician and should only be done with a diagnosis of IBS, but to avoid flaring your symptoms with these strategies, you could try low FODMAP options for these. Some good fats include eggs, coconut oil, olive oil and low FODMAP nut butters. A great combination could be to combine one of these fats with your chia or flax at breakfast, after you've drunk some warm water, for maximum effect.   Try the ‘I Love You' massage The I Love You Massage is an easy abdominal massage that you can do on yourself at home, and is designed specifically for IBS problems like bloating, gas, constipation, etc. I've linked to a free video tutorial in the show notes. In my experience, it's best performed at night before bed, as it also helps to stimulate your migrating motor complex, which is a wave like motion in your small intestine, that cleans up the small intestine between meals and most of all, overnight. Whilst the MMC won't directly help with constipation, it will help with SIBO and bloating occurring in the small intestine, and so this massage is targeting two issues at once – constipation through stimulating the large intestine and bloating/SIBO that's occurring in the small intestine. So that's it! I hope one or a few of these at-home remedies help with your constipation. I would love to hear how you get on, so please do reach out on Instagram to let me know! Let's get social!
