Have you been discouraged in your wellness journey? Maybe you feel like you're putting in a lot of effort, but not seeing the progress you hoped for.Or maybe you feel like there's a million more things you should be doing in your health journey. Perhaps you're so worried about achieving "perfect health" that you're stressed out and haven't been able to rest and enjoy your time (by the way, perfect health doesn't exist). In a world where there's so much new information all the time - new trends, new studies, and new fad diets - sometimes it's important to go back to the basics and steward your body by focusing on nourishment, rest, and joy instead of trying to keep up with all of the latest biohacks. In this episode, Jordan gives encouragement for your health journey, shares Biblical insights about health, and talks about foundational health practices that helped her get through the stress (and lack of sleep) that comes with having young children. You'll Learn:How foundational health practices can help your body handle stressorsWhat to do when you feel like you're not doing enough for your healthWhy small shifts make a huge differenceThe impact that purpose, joy, and rest have on your healthWhat the Bible teaches us about the foundations of good healthWant to dig deeper into this topic? PCOS and thyroid issues often go hand in hand, and who better to break it down for us than Amanda Montalvo, a women's health dietitian who has both?? Grab a cup of coffee (or tea) and let's chat with Amanda as she uncovers some of the mysteries of the thyroid. What big red flags should we be looking for symptom-wise to see if we might have thyroid problems? What labs are actually helpful to have run to explore the right treatment protocol? Which minerals are most important to get in your diet? Amanda debunks the myth that adrenal cocktails will solve all your thyroid problems (shocker!) and delves into the incredible impact stress can have on our bodies. She also uncovers for us which medications are most helpful for our thyroid symptoms. This is alllll the info you wish your doctor gave you, but never did. Of course, we can't talk about thyroid health without talking about minerals! Amanda is an expert on minerals, and if you've ever been interested in mineral health testing, the controversy surrounding iodine, and how things like the copper IUD can impact our health, you're in the right place! I absolutely love this episode, and have wanted to pick Amanda's brain on this for so long. Do you feel like you are ‘good' all week, even month, and then your period comes along and RUINS it all with intense cravings that send you spiraling into a binge and shame fest? One thing I WISH I knew years ago was that period cravings are NORMAL. It's so sad that as women diet culture conditions us to believe that all we need is more "willpower" to beat period cravings.. or to eat some frozen grapes instead??? (um, how are we even comparing grapes to a big ol' bowl of trix? Do ya think my taste buds are dumb?!). It is this exact mindset that causes the period binges, {first_name}! Now, while period cravings are normal, and you'll understand WHY in this podcast episode… Binges are not. When you understand WHY you have cravings and how to honor them so that you don't spiral into chaotic eating and feeling even worse than you already are (periods are not fun to begin with!).. it is so empowering to then give your body what it needs without guilt or fear. Which is why I'm excited to bring back one of the most popular episodes on the podcast (and one of my personal favorite interview!!) with hormone specialist and Registered Dietitian Amanda Montalvo. In this episode we cover: understanding your hormonal changes at every part of your period cycle WHY you have cravings, specifically carbs (yes, there is a physiological REASON) how to identify a hormonal imbalance (what's normal and what's not) and what to do about it Reasons you are binge eating on your period (it's not because of your period) and how to break free of this cycle Rachel's Resources: Follow Rachel on Instagram Stop feeling out of control with food using the FREE eguide: 3 Steps to Stop Feeling Out of Control with Food Are you a Food Freedom Professional seeking to boost her counseling skills & coach clients with confidence using the Intuitive Eating approach? When your Nutritionist is on point and you're doing everything seemingly correctly and yet you still have trouble conceiving or maybe even going into labor, where can we look? What is it that may be impacting our experience? This week, we are speaking with my friend Amanda Montalvo she is a Hormone healing Rd (@hormonehealingrd) on Instagram if you follow her there. She also has an incredible podcast called Are You Menstrual we're going to be discussing her journey of how she got out of the Hormonal birth control pill had really had to help rebalance and then became pregnant eventually and went on to have a home birth. We're gonna get to hear how all of this unfolded and some of the really beautiful gems that she has learned along the way. One issue that we are going to discuss several times throughout the episode is this idea of stress and how it can impact us in so many ways how you can be doing everything seemingly right but if we are overwhelmed with stress there are still going to be issues you know kind of consistently popping up so be sure to listen through on that theme and hear some of the advice that Amanda gets throughout. I am actually on Amanda's podcast this week as well so once you finish this episode be sure to head on over to RU menstrual and listen to the episode that we did discussing homework specifically and all of the incredible benefits which I'm sure some of you know but this would be a different perspective and I hope that you thoroughly enjoyed that episode. If you're excited to join the next cohort of The HBC, which will run from January to March, make sure you're signed up for our waitlist! Okay, let's jump into this beautiful story with Courtney. Episode Roundup: You can prepare all you want, you can do everything right and still struggle to conceive and what we need to remember is that stress can play a critical role in this and you know truthfully timing is everything Amanda wanted to get pregnant and thought she would get pregnant very quickly and yet it took a year but once it was finally the right time, everything was in position she was in a feeling environment she and her husband were able to conceive and what a precious little baby they did make. Now on that same idea same concept if we move that over to labor what talk about how stress can also play a role in win that begins you know part of the importance of going into labor is relaxing letting loose getting comfortable if we are in a state of stress and panic it will be hard to get into that separation phase to get the contraction moving and going obviously it's gonna happen at some point. We're going to come to labor but the best thing that we can actively let go to actively release our responsibilities as much as possible and focus inward on the massive transformation that is about to take place. Once Amanda was able to let go of that go go go intensity really actively focus on relaxing she was of course able to step into that separation phase and to relax and release into the laboring process and apparently reflexology really really help together there. Next, we were trying different time is not linear it's not the same thing that we experience from day-to-day and why is that well we're in what's called liminality we're in this other worldly out of our typical mind experience which is beautiful but don't expect the clock to make sense when you're in labor because it's going to be totally different from what you expect almost always. It's one of those experiences where a minute may feel like an hour or an hour may feel like a minute. It is an absolutely unlike clear version of time so relaxing into that and allowing the process to just unfold without the concerns of protective “Oh no did you get that contraction timer down like if everything written and recorded” that's going into liminality releasing all of that thinking brain allows that to be OK no matter whether you're labor is 30 minutes or 30 hours. Finally Amanda stated that birth forced her to truly look in word, Can you do this Amanda? Do you want to meet your daughter? or Do you wanna transport? Do you want to outsource to the hospital have them do something for you to stimulate labor to relax you in some way? But you know what and Amanda in this situation decided to dig in and meet her baby and this is what motherhood is about. Digging into your intuition no matter what it takes that doesn't necessarily mean they get home every time it may be something very different but digging into your intuition and what's right from you. Instead of immediately outsourcing to somebody else's idea or what somebody else thinks is right for you. This not only served Amanda during labor but it has served her already tremendously and motherhood and making those decisions for her family making those decisions for Eliana with confidence. That is what motherhood is all about and that is what labor can teach us if we are open and willing and ready to accept it alright my friends I hope that you enjoy. Many of our readers and listeners have heard me talk about the zinc and copper relationship. Have you delved into how copper is involved yet? My guest today shares everything from the importance of minerals to how the iron recycling system works. Today's guest, Amanda Montalvo, RD, is a women's health dietitian that helps women get to the root cause of hormone imbalances and have healthy menstrual cycles. Amanda started off her education in nutrition with the traditional route, but after dealing with her own health problems after getting off hormonal birth control she quickly realized the value of functional medicine. After healing her acne, balancing her hormones, and learning the value of her menstrual cycle, Amanda found her purpose—to help women create a body in balance and not settle for anything less. Join us as we discuss minerals and WHY so many get iron wrong. Have you been told you're anemic and want to look into your copper or Vitamin A status? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: How mineral imbalances affect the whole body How do copper and Vitamin A regulate iron? Organ meats- should you supplement? Beta-carotene versus retinol Opinions on utilizing hair mineral testing to see the overall picture of stress and mineral levels Different labs to ask your doctor for Quotes “Iron is in our tissues. We need to get it into the blood. How do we do that? We have different proteins that are moving it around, but those proteins need enzymes. Those enzymes are just making a reaction happen and that's where the minerals come in, right? Minerals are spark plugs for reactions in the body for enzymes.” [6:56] “As estrogen goes up, hepcidin will also increase, and then that means we have less iron absorption in the gut. So, you can look anemic when you have high estrogen, but in reality, you're actually storing a lot of iron. So, hormones can definitely impact our iron status as well." Amanda Montalvo from Hormone Healing RD and Dana dig deep into a clinical approach to stress, hormone health, and mineral imbalances! Amanda talks us through: what are the biggest contributors, or causes, to developing mineral imbalances? How can these imbalances contribute to our symptoms and ability to cope with stress? How does this tie in...
I get so many questions from women doing our program and challenges about taking hormonal birth control, including the pill, IUD, depo shot, and more. I actually took the pill for many years. I didn't understand why it was so important to ovulate and have a period. The doctor never warned me, and I didn't do any research on it back then. I just thought it was convenient to not have a period, and at the time, I didn't want to fall pregnant. So I thought I'd get Amanda on the podcast to talk about how birth control interferes with your hormones and why having a healthy ovulatory cycle is so important for all women even if you don't want to fall pregnant. In this episode, we discuss:➡️How the menstrual cycle works➡️Why ovulation (and progesterone) is so important➡️How birth control suppresses ovulation➡️How the menstrual cycle offers insights into your overall health➡️What happens when you stop taking the pill➡️How a woman becomes estrogen dominant➡️How stress impacts the menstrual cycle and ovulation➡️The effects of alcohol on the menstrual cycle ➡️How IUDs interfere with your hormones➡️Symptoms from birth control and synthetic hormones➡️Why it takes time to get your hormones back on track after birth control (and how much time it typically takes)➡️How you can support your body when coming off of birth controlLINKSFollow Kitty on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kittyblomfield/Follow Amanda on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/hormonehealingrd/Sign up to Saturée's mailing list to be notified when we release the oyster capsules https://www.saturee.com.au/More reading https://www.hormonehealingrd.com/blog/copper-iudhttps://www.hormonehealingrd.com/blog/hbchttps://www.hormonehealingrd.com/blog/side-effects-hbc
How's your stress? I often feel like we're all stressed and that's the norm. But just because there's an expectation that we're feeling stressed doesn't make it okay. As today's guest explains, all this stress can have a severe negative impact on your health. About Rachel Doyle, RD Rachel Doyle is a Registered Dietitian who helps people overcome digestive issues with the healing power of food and functional nutrition. She works with clients individually and in group programs in her virtual private practice, RAD Nutrition. With a Master's degree in Nutrition and additional training in integrative and functional nutrition, Rachel uses gut health principles, the mind-body connection, and functional lab testing to help clients find their root cause and regain control of their health. Understanding the Common Causes of Gut Problems In this episode, Rachel delves into some common sources of various gut issues. One that she frequently sees is low levels of stomach acid. When we don't have enough of it, we'll have trouble breaking down and digesting food. This leads to a whole host of potential problems, from bloating and reflux to bacterial infections and overgrowth. Rachel also sees a lot of people with bacterial imbalances, various gut infections, and mineral deficiencies. Many times these problems exist in tandem and can lead to a slew of issues. She explains what to look for if you suspect there's a problem and steps to take to address it. The Connection Between Your Gut and Your Stress Levels In addition to these physical root causes of gut problems, is stress. Stress can come from many sources. Overwork, poor sleep habits, high-intensity exercise, past trauma, environmental toxins, and diet can all cause harmful levels of stress. Even though we can't control all these factors, there are steps that anyone can take to reduce stress in their life. Rachel explains how to start talking to yourself in order to accept that you don't need to live in a constant state of stress. Mindset is often at the center of this healing process. Before you can do anything else, you need to believe that recovery is possible. Sometimes the root of stress lies in the gut itself. By treating gut health and mental health together, Rachel has seen how actual and lasting healing occurs. How can mindfulness practices improve your overall gut health? Getting that mindset of believing you can heal and just the way that you talk to yourself can have a big effect.” [21:05] “We want to come at it from both sides. Return guest Amanda Montalvo from @hormonehealongrd joins us once again to share even more information about minerals, a follow-up from episode #182. This time, the stars of the show are cooper and iron. Amanda shares her story of having a copper IUD after being on birth control pills for quite a while. She discussed how her adrenals were shot, Vit A was lacking and copper was in excess causing estrogen to build up. She explains all the nuances of how minerals must be in sync with each other for us to reap the benefits and she addresses the role stress plays in nutrient deficiencies. Amanda deep dives into the hows and whys as only an expert can. Amanda explains symptoms of copper highs and lows- which are often the same and make look like, symptoms such as mental/emotional struggles, poor detox, acne, high estrogen/PMS symptoms, and even manic episodes. She gives real-world suggestions of how to get and stay "in balance".Mineral issues are a sign of stress and sparkplugs for energy.Hair Mineral Test- have ratios to show imbalances, Thyroid ExampleMinerals can be a big root cause in many health issuesMag burn rate is how much mag your body is using (shows current stress)Blood labs vs other testing optionsCooper- needs to be in sync with zinc 15:1, often people overuse zinc-especially lately and throws this balance offImportance of copper- helps mag make ATP = ENERGYExcessive amounts can build up in wrong places, not be utilized appropriatelyWithout Vit A, copper is useless-can not be converted. Amanda shares how she had always struggled with painful periods + acne and got on the birth control pill to help alleviate those symptoms. Amanda was introduced to the potential side effects of the pill such as nutrient depletion and slowly but surely began learning how her symptoms were not a pill deficiency, but were rather a reflection of her nutrition habits + lifestyle as an athlete. Amanda shares what she has done to heal those symptoms without the pill or copper IUD. Tune in for a surprise Amanda shares on the show!

Are you getting the right minerals? It's common knowledge that minerals are an important part of a healthy diet. What isn't as well known is how they affect hormonal health. Today's guest is a wealth of information about the role of proper mineral balances and your health. About Amanda Montalvo, RD Amanda Montalvo is a women's health dietitian that helps women get to the root cause of hormone imbalances and have healthy menstrual cycles. Amanda started off her education in nutrition with the traditional route, but after dealing with her own health problems after getting off hormonal birth control she quickly realized the value of functional medicine. After healing her acne, balancing her hormones, and learning the value of her menstrual cycle, Amanda found her purpose to help women create a body in balance and not settle for anything less. The Importance of Minerals and How to Test for Them In this episode, Amanda goes into depth on just how important your mineral levels are. There are also many things that can disrupt them, including common forms of birth control. But before you can properly treat a hormone deficiency, you need information. To that end, Amanda discusses testing, particularly hair mineral testing, and how it can give you and your practitioner a window into your health. If you find that you have period-related symptoms or a history of thyroid issues, a hair mineral test will likely be very informative. Often, modern diets lead to unnecessary confusion. For instance, many women are often told to consume more iron. Amanda explains why this is not good advice because our bodies actually recycle iron. What we need are the minerals and vitamins that help our bodies with this process. Focus on Food, Not Supplements While many people turn to supplements to get their minerals, Amanda would rather you focus on what you're eating. Taking supplements often leads to further imbalance. But when you and your practitioner focus on eating a properly balanced diet, you'll get a well-rounded dose of what you need. What would you like to know about the minerals in your diet? Whether you've been on birth control, had a copper IUD, or if you just have symptoms.” [9:49] “It's really showing you the why. Why do you have that hormone result?” [14:14] “I think that you can build your own and have a more balanced approach that's not going to create more imbalances in your body, and you'll actually absorb it.” [30:13] Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts! We are all about education of your genes to help you with your body acceptance journey, but we know that tips and tricks to get through a monthly pain in the ass….or should we say, uterus, might be beneficial. We interview Amanda Montalvo, RD whose focus is on helping women navigate their cycles, care for their bodies, and find what works best for them. We have candid discussions about gentle nutrition, the clinical definition of detox, how to heal your body without buying into the wellness culture messaging, and how to support your body through it’s monthly cycle with rest, movement, and nourishment. I suffered from acne for over 12 years. Not just the occasional pimple either, but the kind that stole my confidence and made me want to hide out in my house. At first it was “just something I had to deal with as a teen,” but when I got into my 20’s and 30’s and it was STILL lingering, I knew it was time to do something to get the root of my skin issues. Acne is NOT something you just have to deal with, it’s a sign of imbalance, and now that I’ve identified and addressed my imbalances, I’m acne free! (unless I eat garlic, that is!) So if you’ve got skin issues listen (or know or love someone who does) tune into this week’s podcast to see what I (and my dietician friend and fellow FDN-P practitioner, Amanda Montalvo) did to clear up our skin for good!
Today’s guest is Amanda Montalvo, an Integrative Dietitian and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. You may know her from her website yournontoxiclife.com, which has a TON of resources. I was introduced to Amanda’s work by Autumn Smith, who we had on the podcast last month. She recommended Amanda and said “You’ve got to get her on the show!” I just loved Autumn and as I was browsing Amanda’s website and preparing for this interview I said to myself “I think I found a new best friend!” She is passionate about helping frustrating women balance their hormones, and boost their energy through detox. I am just so excited and honored to have her on the show today! Welcome, Amanda! Video Version - https://youtu.be/tRR8taY_0k4 Amanda's Website - https://yournontoxiclife.com/ STARTER QUESTIONS: Walk us through your health journey- I know the past 5 years have been really transformational for you. What have you learned about your body? Most of our listeners are women, and I hear from so many of them who are so frustrated with “the pill” and how it makes them feel. But they also don’t want to get pregnant, or maybe they’ve been told by their gynecologist that they need the pill in order to keep a regular period. What do you tell these women, and where should they start? Another key piece that you talk about in your health journey is liver health and detox. This has been something I have been really interested in lately because so much ties back to our livers! How did you begin to heal your liver? Do you believe that everyone needs a liver detox? I know a lot of people associate their liver with alcohol and might be thinking “well, I am not a heavy drinker, so my liver is probably good”. What are some hidden signs of liver issues that people may be overlooking just because they assume their liver is fine? What if someone was a heavy drinker, I know a lot of people drink heavily in their 20’s or in college, is it possible to reverse some of this damage with detox? For a lot of women, we start going all natural with our food, and then maybe our house hold products…make up is usually the last thing we transition. You have an awesome line of skin and beauty products on your site. Can you talk about the importance of using these natural products? What ingredients should our listeners be looking for in a product that is “bad”? Let’s talk about your website, your blog is a wealth of information, and we just talked about the beauty products, but I know that you have a lot of other things going on. You offer coaching, cosmetic consults, and help with detox! Give us a run down on everything you have going on and where we can follow you? Listener Questions: Q1 - 23:53 I feel like I am a podcast junkie and every time I turn around someone talks about this symptom or that symptom and I am like “OMG I have that!” And then I hear about a new supplement that’s out there and I say “Oh I need to take that” so I add a new supplement to my repertoire. Now I am starting to wonder if I am overloading my liver with all of these supplements. Do you think I am overloading it? I am wondering if I should stop all my supplements for a little while and detox, maybe just take some CBD oil? If you think this is a good idea, to take a little break or a detox, how long should I do it? * Jenna in Hampton Q2 - 26:54 I love this podcast! I feel like you answer so many of my questions that I haven’t even asked! Lately I have been really listening to my body and I feel like my thyroid is somehow connected to my digestion. I can’t figure out quite how, but say I do a three day smoothie detox, I will feel like my thyroid is just in overload, but working really well. Another time, I may eat a big meal, with starches, my body just doesn’t digest the food and I feel like my thyroid is off. Something like a simple meat and veggies is usually fine! Is this all in my mind, or do you think my thyroid is somehow tied to my digestion? * Laura in Minnesota Q3 - 29:02 I am all about the detox, and I know you are too! Lately I have been looking at gallbladder flushes, which is something new. I am not aware of gall bladder issues, but I know it is tied to so many different things. Same with the liver. Should I flush my gall bladder and liver? And if so, what do you recommend? Dr Google told me about a liver flush, but it had mixed reviews, some really bad and some good. What do you recommend? * Danielle in Redmond Q4 - 33:54 Literally every podcast that I listen to and everyone that I follow on Instagram has been talking about dry brushing so I ordered it on Amazon, and I am in LOVE! I’ve only been using it a week, but I just love the way it feels, it is so revitalizing! But the main reasons I got it are because I heard it helps with cellulite, and of course for my lymphatic system. Do you believe that this is true and proven, or do you think it’s all in my head? How does brushing your skin work to benefit your lymphatic system and cellulite? * Ally in Virginia Beach Q5 - 36:04 I really enjoy your podcast! You always bring the best guests, and I can’t wait to hear from Amanda Montalvo because my skin really needs some help. I do intermittent fasting and eat in a 6 hour window on most days, but sometimes I will do longer fasts, from 24 hours to 3 days. When I do these long fasts, my skin is EXCELLENT! It is so perfect. But as soon as I start eating again, I notice everything from my psoriasis, to my exczema and acne, coming back with a vengeance. I eat really clean for the most part, I would say about 90/10 Paleo, but it’s still not good enough, nothing compares to fasting. Unfortunately, I can’t fast forever! Do you think my skin issues are tied to digestion? And if I am already eating clean, what can I do to improve my skin besides never eating again? * Pat in Florida Q6 - 38:11 I am 28 years old, and my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for the past two years. We have tried everything (NATURAL) under the sun, it seems. One of my friends told me about Seed Cycling, saying that it can help, she has a friend of a friend that did it and got pregnant. I have never heard of it before, and I am always a little hesitant of trying something just because it worked for a friend of a friend. Is this something that you recommend? And can you talk about how it works? * Anonymous --------------------------------------- To learn more about the principles of intermittent fasting, purchase Chantel's book, Waist Away: The Chantel Ray Way NOW by visiting http://amzn.to/2CVmTgs YouTube Channel Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCteFjiVaY6n0SOAixcyZbWA Like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheChantelRayWay Things we love: https://chantelrayway.com/things-i-love-2/ Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheChantelRayWay ***As always, this podcast is not designed to diagnose, treat, prevent or cure any condition and is for information purposes only. Are you consuming a paleo diet yet still struggling with digestive issues or symptoms of hormonal imbalance such as stubborn weight gain, fatigue, skin breakouts or PMS? If so you MUST listen to this week’s podcast, Cultivating Body Wisdom (and healing from the root cause!) with Registered Dietitian and FDN-P (and one of my favorite people), Amanda Montalvo. I met Amanda at Paleo FX last year and fell in love immediately. She was passionate, educated and as nerdy as I was about all things wellness. As we got to know each other better, we realized that we were attracting the same type of clients: Motivated women who were eating a paleo diet, but were still stuck.
