This week, we're revisiting some of our favorite episodes from the year. For those who make New Year's resolutions, today's conversation might plant the seed for a bold one: Running for office.Amanda Litman is a co-founder of Run for Something, which recruits and supports young, progressive candidates who want to run for office. We spoke in February 2022, but our conversation remains relevant as ever. It's about the mechanics of American democracy, the confusions and myths that keep so many of us from participating in them and the practical question of what it means to step off the sidelines and, well, run for something. We also talk about why Democrats tend to chase “shiny objects” over real political power, what right-leaning organizations have been up to that liberals should envy, how you probably have more control over issues like abortion and climate change than you think, what it actually takes to run a local campaign, the three questions prospective candidates should be able to answer, and more. This is the rare conversation about democracy that left me feeling better, rather than worse, about what's possible. I think it'll do the same for you. This episode contains strong language.Mentioned:“Heeding Steve Bannon's Call, Election Deniers Organize to Seize Control of the GOP — and Reshape America's Elections” by Isaac Arnsdorf, Doug Bock Clark, Alexandra Berzon and Anjeanette DamonWhat It Takes by Richard Ben CramerFind out what elected offices you can run forBook recommendations:The Heart Principle by Helen HoangOlga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl GonzalezLet's Get Physical by Danielle FriedmanThoughts? And now that they were all gathered back on campus, together for the first time in over a decade, it was almost impossible to believe this was what was happening. They sat uncomfortably in the small room, eyes darting around as if no one could decide who was good, who was bad, and, most importantly, who had done the thing.”

Democrats Chase Shiny Objects. Here's How to Build Real Power.

The Ezra Klein Show

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 1, 2022 65:28

There's good reason to worry about the future of democracy, and little reason to believe Democrats have a viable plan for protecting it. They built their strategy around passing a major suite of voting reforms and protections through Congress, and a few weeks back, their whole agenda collapsed in the face of the filibuster. So what now? Is there a Plan B for protecting democracy?Yes. But it begins with realizing that there is no national solution in a country that administers elections at the state and local levels. Which means it begins with realizing that many Democrats have made a mistake: They've focused so much on national conflicts that they've ceded state and local power to the right, with dangerous results. Trumpists can't pass some big national bill putting Trump back in office, so they are organizing to win the state and local offices that will hold power over the process next time. Democracy's defenders need to do the same. And that means you.Amanda Litman is a co-founder of Run for Something, which recruits and supports young, progressive candidates who want to run for office. And so this is a conversation about the mechanics of American democracy, the confusions and myths that keep so many of us from participating in them and the practical question of what it means to step off the sidelines and, well, run for something. We talk about why Democrats tend to chase “shiny objects” over real political power, what right-leaning organizations have been up to that liberals should envy, how you probably have more control over issues like abortion and climate change than you think, what it actually takes to run a local campaign, the three questions prospective candidates should be able to answer, and more. This isn't a conversation raging against the decaying of American democracy. This is a conversation about saving that democracy by participating at its most fundamental level: the local level. The one where you can have the most impact. And so it's the rare conversation about democracy that left me feeling better, rather than worse, about what's possible. I think it'll do the same for you. This episode contains strong language.Mentioned:The Ezra Klein Show is hiring a managing producer. BYOB, the Bring Your Own Book Podcast, is back for Season 2 featuring your favourite bookworms Nikki, Kelly, and Tilly! Every episode we'll discuss the book we read and pair it with a drink inspired by the book.In this episode, we discuss Helen Hoang's contemporary romance series, The Kiss Quotient, which features the following novels: “The Kiss Quotient”, “The Bride Test”, and “The Heart Principle”. This episode's drink is a classic margarita! The main love interests of each novel, Michael, Khai, and Quan, all drink them in their backyard together in a sweet scene in The Heart Principle, and it just seemed like the perfect fun drink to sip and talk about this series! It's made with tequila, triple sec, and lime juice, with salt on the rim.** Content/trigger warnings include: intense subjects like discrimination due to neurodivergence, death of a loved one, emotional abuse, xenophobia, suicidal ideation, and sexual harassment. **"The Kiss Quotient" by Helen Hoang: https://tinyurl.com/ptwx3hsh“The Bride Test” by Helen Hoang: https://tinyurl.com/ya6m88ft“The Heart Principle” by Helen Hoang: https://tinyurl.com/hhf9ctrhWant to support our little podcast? Tune in for Arthur's thoughts on The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang. Her third #ownvoices contemporary romance stars Anna Sun, a violinist who seeks out a one-night stand after her boyfriend Julian announces that they should try an open relationship before making plans to tie the knot, and Quan Diep, the tattooed and motorcycle-riding cousin of Michael Larsen from the author's debut novel The Kiss Quotient. Initially, Quan seems to fit the bill for a one-night stand, but maybe he's actually qualified for much more…? This episode also includes topics like advocation for better disability representation in media, a recitation of a Frasier scene that showcases the eponymous radio psychiatrist in all his control-freak glory, and the numerous striking similarities between The Heart Principle and The Kiss Quotient—including the fact that Quan, like Michael, is always in Cinnamon Roll Mode. This week, Lindsay and Halle throw it way, way back to the 1957 film An Affair to Remember (this ep is a special homage to our Mom, since we recorded this one on her birthday). We went through a large (and wonderful) Cary Grant phase in middle and high school, and, between the looks, the drama, and the Cary of it all, there's a lot to obsess over. Plus, stay for the end of the episode where Lindsay and Halle share their current obsessions: Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson (Lindsay) and The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang (Halle).  - Follow us on Instagram here. - Rent An Affair to Remember here.  - Check out The Heart Principle on Goodreads here, or buy it here. - Check out Truly Devious on Goodreads here, or buy it here.
