Overview Like many young men in high school cursed with a dash of creativity, Jim found a love for writing, which everybody else thought was practically useless. Those folks urged him to get good at math and science instead, and so he worked at those, but he was never sure if he could hack them out at a university level. After he graduated said university with an arts degree (where he had to read an awful lot), he wondered what other young people had gone through the same thing. It's always been his dream to inspire young men and women to pursue STEM projects, as he thinks the world could use as many helping hands it can get and he thinks they are up to the challenge. In other news, he grew up near Toronto, Canada and devoured any written adventure he could find, including many of the works written by Kenneth Oppel, D. J. HUNTED BY FIRE What is fifteen-year-old Felix Deltorei supposed to do when he longs for rebellion? In his world, where the dragon Gods reign with barbaric force, such thoughts could cost him his life. The risks have been drilled into Felix and his friends since they were children. The war between humans and the winged Gods ended with a treaty; humanity would serve them or be driven extinct. Hundreds of years later, under the watchful eyes of the Gods and their devoted followers, those same laws remain. Felix knows he has to find his place in the world before he's found out. Surrounded by teachers who only ever value faith, obedience, but also technological advancement, Felix strives to achieve security and a better life in the only way he knows how; with his inventive mind. However, just as he gets his chance, one of the province's famed inquisitors arrives in town. Little does Felix know, the devastating events about to take place will risk exposing him, but they will also push him out into a journey that might mean the deaths of the ones he loves if he can't escape in time. 14 years after the original Death Note run ended, we were blessed with the return of familiar characters and introduced with a new one, Minoru Tanaka. A character whose ingenious actions causes the Shinigami king to create a new rule. This will be the last Death Note related episode between the boys as they discuss the manga's legacy and more. Skip synopsis @ 6:52   Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com   101: Death Note 2020 Special One-Shot Story by Tsugumi Ohba Art by Takeshi Obata   Plot Synopsis:   The Death god Ryuk is bored as usual and hungry for some more delicious apples, he goes back to the human world and finds someone who is intelligent enough to use the Death Note in new ways.   Ryuk gives Minoru Tanaka the same Death Note that Light Yagami used in exchange for apples, Of course Minoru knows of Light as the tyrannical Kira. A person who he now studies in his ethics class as a terrorist albeit Kira was successful at preventing wars and lowering crime rates, using the Death Note to rid the world of whomever he deemed as evil.   Minoru is different, in that he decides not to murder anyone but instead to sell the Death Note, he tells Ryuk that the world has changed since Kira had the Death Note and that to become like the next Kira would be more so difficult in a world where cameras are on every street corner and in everyone's pocket. Plus, people are aware of the existence of Ryuk and can identify him and the Death Note now.   Minoru hatches the plan that Ryuk goes to Sakura TV station so to announce the bid and have people use twitter and the hashtag “Power of Kira”   Ryuk will be untraceable so long as he travels underground, under earth, much to the chagrin of L, the surviving members of the NPA and the SPK.   It becomes apparent that the money for the bid is reaching beyond that of any individual to be able to afford, Minoru sends out Ryuk to relay the message that government and world leaders must use their PR representatives to announce their bid. Eventually the winner is announced to be the government of the United States of America.   To make the transfer of money discreet, Minoru has the US government transfer the winning amount worth 10 trillion dollars divided in equal parts to people under the age of 70, living in Tokyo and who also own a Yotsuba bank of Japan account.   Once Minoru deems the plan a success, he gives Ryuk the Death Note to pass on and tells him that he no longer wants to see him again, and that he will live his life happily thanks to the fortune from the U.S. government.   The plot twist, as Ryuk knows, is that the Death Note brings misfortune to those who touch it, and that is still the case. Before Ryuk gives the Death note to the US he is summoned by the Shinigami King, afterwards he tells the current US president of the time, Donald Trump that the rules of the Death Note have now changed.   Anyone who buys and sells the Death Note will die as punishment. The buyer dies upon receiving the Death Note and the seller upon receiving their currency.   Ryuk explains to Trump that although he will die upon acquiring the Death Note, the Death Note itself will still be owned by his second in command, and thus will become the property of the U.S. government. Trump however decides to abandon the Death Note but pretend that he still has it so that people will see him as a hero. Very Shrewd.   Topics and Facts:   The one shot made its public debut during Takeshi Obata's art exhibition, named Never Complete, before being published on Viz Media's website. It is now available as part of an anthology of short stories, released under Viz media. The main character Minoru is an intelligent character as was Light Yagami, unprecedented for a Death Note user is his pacifism, in terms of capitalist ideology you can consider Minoru a far better hero if not a better man than Light Yagami but what makes the series so good as a story is how it presents owning the Death Note as a moral dilemma.   We also talk about Near, who makes another appearance in this one-shot, having previously appeared in the 2008 ‘C – Kira' one-shot story.   Although this one-shot manga is satire it is important to note that when this was published the world was in the middle of a pandemic which threatened the economy and the lives of those from all walks of life. Tsugumi Ohba did not write this manga as a response to the pandemic nor the January 6 U.S. capitol attack, but one can still see it as a response to Trumpism. During president Donald Trumps' service, the country was (and as of 2023 still is) culturally divided. Possibly due to the newness of social media platforms propagating disinformation and propaganda. As of this episode air date January 28, 2023, political discourse worldwide is still dangerously tense.   “The Gold Standard” that James refers to is a monetary system that provides a fixed international exchange rate. James is correct in assuming that under such a standard the transaction for the Death Note is not feasible however, both countries would need to share the same kind of standard, and the buying country would need to be the larger provider of gold stock for the transaction to be completely beneficial to Japan. The U.S. does have the larger supply of gold stock compared to Japan, however as steven mentions, the U.S. has not used the standard since 1971, a decision dubbed the “Nixon Shock”. Because of this the U.S. can prevent a drastic economic deflation, which would happen if the U.S. if they were to buy the Death Note under a gold standard. There is also the “The Silver standard” which is more feasible of a monetary system because of silver having widespread stock worldwide, in retrospect it may seem absurd to consider gold stock as a fixed rate for international exchange, but one must keep in mind that the gold standard was after all created by the world dominating English empire.   Although it certainly seems Minoru did the right thing in comparison to his predecessor Light Yagami, one can wonder if such an auction could be successful to an economic boom, after all a country could place sanctions on the trading of WMDs (weapons of mass destruction) but then again what country could be powerful enough to threaten sanctions on the U.S. and Japan? Especially after the transfer of Kira's power?   A new (supposedly Netflix) adaptation Is to be written and executively produced by Halia Abdel-Meguid, it will be made by the ‘Upside Down pictures' production company. The same company responsible for ‘Stranger Things' created by the Duffer brothers.     Differences from the original 2003/'06 manga run and the 2015 NTV Mini Series:   L appears in all white clothing, more so like the character of Near in the manga. He also wears buttoned linen shirts, which Watari has multiples of ready whenever L wants to change. The Death Note that Gellus owns before Misa is coloured red, it appears black in the manga, however the manga explains that there are red and white coloured Death Notes that Shinigami own within the rules section. The Eraldo Coil character/alias that L uses is absent from the story but otherwise replaced with the name “Babel” which is possibly derived from the Hebrew word בָּלַל (bālal), meaning to jumble or to confuse. It also comes from the name “Tower of Babel” which is referred to in the bible as a tower reaching God, with its construction itself being mentioned in an origin myth for the world's languages. In the miniseries, Babel is not an alias of but is instead an associate of L. The real identity of Babel is Near a.k.a Nate River.   Near appears earlier in the story, before L dies. Near's appearance is also different, instead of wearing white pyjamas Near wears something that is a mix between a tailored suit and dungarees. They do however have a white bob hair style, albeit less curly than the manga. There is no SPK (Special Provision for Kira), instead after the death of L Near joins the same task force as the NPA, becoming the new L.   Teru Mikami appears much earlier in the story; he spies on Misa, then attacks and steals her Death Note after Light instructs her to dig it up in the woods. Like the manga this event happens after Light regains his memories of the Death Note. Rem does not kill L, instead Teru Mikami, having sided with Light and acquiring the Shinigami eyes, is the one to kill L whilst Rem remains passive throughout. Rem does not die through the events of the series and neither risks their life to save Misa. L's death occurs after he pulls off a desperate and crude tactic to frame Light. L gets Light alone and proceeds to write Light's name in the Death Note. Through the ordeal Light receives a text message from Mikami that shows L's real name. Light attacks L, then takes the Death Note and writes L's name down as a form of self-defence. This does not kill L, since L had Watari create a fake Death Note in order to trick and goad Light into using the note on L. Before L manages to use the fake note as evidence, he is killed by Mikami's Death Note and Light tells the task force that L told him his real name in order to goad him into an attack.   Mello is not a legitimate heir to L, instead he is a character that is trapped within the body of Near. Near having what is known as Disassociate Identity Disorder, otherwise known as “split personalities”. Sometimes Near keeps Mello at bay by having Mello talk through a ventriloquists' doll. Mello ends up taking full control later without the need for a doll, and dresses just like their anime/manga counterpart. Near/Mello are both male characters but they are played by a woman, Mio Yuki. Ryuk does not write Light's name in his Death Note, instead Light dies in a warehouse on fire trying to grab his Death Note, he begs Ryuk to make the eye trade with him but the book is already in flames at that moment and soon Light himself burns. (If my memory is correct, Light is so deluded at that point he forgets the death note is fake - J) Mikami is the one who starts the fire, in order to prevent the task force from arresting Light. Near is the dominant personality when Light is captured as Kira, and remains dominant throughout most of the episodes. Watari does not die; he survives to the end and assists Near after L's death.       Other references:     Facebook Instagram Twitter Official Website   Email

The two friends brace themselves for the final volumes of Death Note and James compares Near's/Ohba's comments on the Kira worshippers to that of the most avid of Trump supporters, albeit such riot scenes are all too common in the real world. Skip synopsis @ 4:31 Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com 097: Death Note vol. 10 ⁓ Story by Tsugumi Ohba Art by Takeshi Obata Translation by Tetsuichiro Miyaki Lettering by Gia Cam Luc After Near and Mogi escape an attack from Kira worshippers, he suspects that the new L, Light Yagami, is Kira and lies about Mogi so to stir distrust amongst Light's team. Light permits his task force to see Near, Aizawa does so and picks up Mogi, in return they share clues and Aizawa and Mogi begin to suspect Light. Mogi, Mello and Matt, spy on Misa in order to determine if she has a Death Note. Light knows he is under suspicion. And has given Misa's Death Note to one of his supporters, Teru Mikami. Light is wary that with Teru being the hand of Kira his ideologies in time will start to differ from his own. Through coincidence, Teru has replaced the Kira spokesperson Demegawa with Light's university acquaintance. The news reporter Kiyomi Takada. Light contacts Takada whilst maintaining the guise that he is investigating Takada as part of the Kira investigation. In truth Light is using Takada so to pass messages on to Mikami. Fun Facts: In the supplementary volume 13 of Death Note, Tsugumi Ohba states that Matt, who accompanies Mello late in the story, is one of the orphans from Wammy's house. Which means he would have been in the line of succession as L's heir. Teru Mikami's design is originally based on Taro Kagami, the main protagonist of the one-shot pilot Death Note. Near's design is based on an early sketch of L. L was to have no bags under his eyes and have white hair. Near and Mello's design was originally switched. As Obata wanted Near to be more feminine and Mello to have the iconic pyjama look. It was Ohba who had the final say on the designs. During the events of the Near and Mello arc, Mello is age 20 and Near is age 18.   For those wondering why cellphones look unusual, the manga finished its original run nearly a year before the release of the apple iphone. What we see in the manga is Obata's idea on what a cellphone would have looked like from a 2006 perspective. Most likely if Obata knew what future smartphones would have looked like he would not have drawn so many buttons.   The creators, Ohba and Obata never met in person whilst making Death Note, merely using their editor to pass information, you could say their editor was the Kiyomi Takada Death Note's production.   Death Note as a series tends to be more like an espionage thriller. As characters are never in contact or near those they are in allegiance with, but at the same time those characters also compromise the existence of the other. Multiple times in the story, Light has been compromised by Misa, Mello, and Takada. Fortunately for Light he met Misa before she was captured and Light was able to meet Takada without giving himself away. Mello is an interesting outlier, as Light tries to prevent Mello meeting Near, since Mello knows about the fake 13-day rule. Facebook Instagram Twitter Official Website   Email

Metropoliman has laid a sinister trap for the brave trio of heros; Mukaido's wife and child have been held hostage to spur a final battle. However, the fight is stealing away time his illness is ill-incentivized to give him. Can he do the one thing he wanted in life and keep them safe? Also, will Mirai ever decide to do anything? Or will he keep taking half-actions and getting absorbed into philosophical thought experiments. And I guess Saki will probably do something in the background. This week, Matt, Sam, Jae, and Jacob read and discuss Platinum End written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata.Read along, meme along, or just yell at our bad opinions by following @OverMangaCast on Twitter.YouTube / Instagram / Facebook

Quantum Babylon Inducido

In this episode we discuss the anime Platinum End, more so the first half of the series covering Mirai and Mukaido's battle against Metropoliman (Uryu Kanade). We focus specifically on Mirai's constant pursuit of happiness, that his family encouraged him to take on, and how that gradually shifted over the length of the series. Especially once he came into conflict with Metropoliman/Uryu's willingness the put others in jeopardy for the sake of his goals to become God. We tie the conversation to our needs as men to find what is important to us in life, how we define happiness, as well as how we derive happiness from the things we do in life, and our struggles with depression in this episode. Hopefully you enjoy the conversation as much as we did. After a week off, we're back with another long episode! This time around, we're examining the category of shonen manga. It's one of (if not THE) best-selling forms of comics in the world, and obviously there's a lot of super popular anime based on shonen manga. Truth be told, though we read plenty of manga, neither of us tends to read much popular shonen, so we felt we needed to step out of our preferences and study something that millions of readers love. To wit, we decided to dabble by reading the first volumes of four big titles: Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata; Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama; Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba by Koyoharu Gotouge; and Chainsaw Man by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Have you read these series, or watched the anime adaptations? Let us know what you think! For reference, the first portion of our podcast is a general discussion about shonen manga, and specifically popular shonen battle manga. Timestamps for the book discussions are as follows: Death Note - 1:07:00 Attack on Titan - 1:46:31 Demon Slayer - 2:14:55 Chainsaw Man - 2:31:40

The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events National Pick Strawberries Day Here are a few fun facts about this beloved sweet fruit: The etymology of the name strawberry (books about this topic) is likely a corruption of the phrase "strewn berry." This would reference the way the plant produced thanks prolifically to runners, resulting in berries strewn about the ground. Fragariaphobia is a little-known word and is the fear of strawberries. In terms of their uniqueness, strawberries are the only fruit that wears its seeds on the outside, and the average strawberry has 200 seeds. Strawberries are perennial and are members of the rose family. The strawberry flower averages five to seven petals. In terms of harvesting, strawberry plants are hand-picked about every three days. A single acre of land can grow almost 50,000 pounds of strawberries. California produces a billion pounds of strawberries every year which means that 75% of the American strawberry crop is grown in California - with Florida and North Carolina in the 2nd and 3rd place. As for strawberry quotes, the author Tsugumi Ohba, Death Note Box Set, wrote, If you keep my secret, this strawberry is yours.   1846 On this day, the Prussian botanist Ludwig Leichhardt (books about this person) wrote a letter to a fellow botanist about his impressive and arduous collecting efforts in Australia. For his part, Ludwig loved Australia. He wrote, I would find it hard to remain in Germany, or even in Europe, now. I [prefer] the clear, sunny skies of Australia. On this day, 1846, Leichhardt wrote a letter to his botanist contact and friend, the Italian Gaetano Durando, living in Paris. Ludwig's message conveys the extreme difficulties and dangers faced by the early plant explorers. He wrote, My dear friend, You have, no doubt, noticed and regretted my long silence... But you must bear this in mind, my good friend, ...  it was not my lot to travel all at my ease...  Gladly would I have made drawings of my plants, and noted fully all particulars of the different species which I saw; and how valuable would such memoranda have been... [as] four of my pack-horses having been drowned.  Botanical and geological specimens thus abandoned — how disappointing! From four to five thousand plants were thus sacrificed... In the spring of 1848, Ludwig Leichhardt and a small group of explorers began what was to be a two- to three-year expedition across Australia. Shortly after starting the trek, the entire party vanished with barely a trace. Still known as the 'Prince of Explorers,' Leichhardt was 35 when he was lost to time.    1858 On this day, in The Flower Garden, Or Breck's Book of Flowers, Tulips at their peak per Joseph Breck A bed of late tulips is generally in its highest perfection about the 20th of May and may be kept in fine condition a fortnight longer, taking the trouble to erect an awning over them.  I take up my Tulips about the 20th of June, and dry them undercover in an airy place, and, when dry, take off the offsets and plant them out, while the flowering roots are each wrapped in a piece of waste paper, and put away, in a box or drawer, in a dry place, until wanted to plant.  One hundred different varieties, with their names and colors, reputed to be the very best, mabe obtained from Holland, at the cost of about $25; but I have found, by experience, that some of the rarer and most expensive sorts are not included. Very good border Tulips, including finedouble sorts, early and late, single, parrots, etc, may be obtained from 50 cents to $1 per dozen, and some of the common sorts at much less price.   So there is some tulip pricing for you courtesy of Joseph Breck back in 1858. And just for comparison, I went out to brecks.com and priced some of their deluxe tulips. They sell eight tulips for $15.   1922 On this day, the sorority of Pi Beta Phi at West Virginia University held a party to celebrate the arrival of spring. In a report of their activities to the 1922 edition of The Arrow, the chapter wrote, The spring party comes on May 20. It will be a Japanese party, with lanterns, spring blossoms, and wooden programs.   Present Day On or around this day in Blackville, South Carolina, that Cuke Season gets underway.  The Encyclopedia of South Carolina (2000) says this about Blackville:  Named for Alexander Black, an early railroad executive who shipped cantaloupes, watermelons, and cucumbers in large quantities by rail.  During the "cuke" season, beginning about May 20, the town council employs an auctioneer to conduct daily sales, generally starting at 10 in the morning and frequently lasting until 6. At the auction, growers may accept or refuse the offered prices. Buyers are usually local produce merchants, though there are often purchasers from markets out of state.    Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Garden Maker by Christie Purifoy  This book came out in January of 2022, and the subtitle is Growing a Life of Beauty and Wonder with Flowers. This is Christie's third book, and her books have to do with beauty and placemaking, sustainability, and love. Her first book is Roots and Sky: A Journey Home in Four Seasons. This book is about purchasing her beautiful property called Maplehearst in Pennsylvania. Her second book was released in 2019 and is called Placemaker: Cultivating Places of Comfort, Beauty, and Peace, and this is about creating a garden home for yourself. I view her latest book Garden Maker as part of this garden trilogy. In this very spiritual and inspirational book, Christie walks us through how to grow a beautiful garden and create your own little slice of heaven here on earth. Now, in addition to teaching you how to make a garden. Christie is a cut flower expert, and she's a master at creating beautiful bouquets and other arrangements. In this book, Christie teaches you some of her tried and true techniques and her easiest bouquet recipes. In addition to sharing her list of favorite shrubs - she calls these superhero shrubs. She also shares her favorite flowers - she calls these flowers of importance. And then last but not least, her favorite self-sowers in a section she calls self-sowing salvation.   Now Christie is a lyrical writer. Her tone is super friendly and personable. When I read one of her books, I always feel like I'm reading something that a garden friend wrote for me. But best of all, and I think more important than any of her credentials, is her passion for plants and the garden because that comes through loud and clear in every word she writes in this book. I wanted to end this review today with a little excerpt from what Christie wrote in the introduction to Garden Maker. She writes, I grow flowers because cannot help myself.  I grow flowers as if some magician at the center of the universe has cast his spell on me, and I will never want my old unenchanted life back again. In my flower garden, I am the weaver of stories. In my flower garden, am the composer of seasonal songs. Or maybe I am more conductor than composer.  This garden of mine is certainly singing a song, but the song delights me, moves me, and surprises me. I cannot recommend flower gardening for the sober-minded.  I cannot recommend it for those afraid of mysterious rabbit holes, who prefer to keep their two feet fixed firmly to a clean and solid, and entirely predictable floor.  I cannot, in good conscience, recommend intoxicating moonflowers or romantic roses to anyone who values utility and efficiency and productivity above all.  But for those who read fairy tales or cry at arias, for those who suspect that heaven lies just behind the veil of this everyday world, well, to those I say: Welcome to the garden.  Welcome to this holy work.  I understand if you are afraid.  The thorns are knife-sharp, and the weeds are always waging their quiet wars.  But here is the promise that has been made to each one of us:  "Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy" (Psalm 126:5).  Every garden is singing a song for the One who made us, and we are invited to sing along.   Beautiful verse. And by the way, can you tell that Christie has a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Chicago? Yes, you can. She's a beautiful writer. This book is 208 pages of a love letter to flowers, plants, gardens, and garden making. You can get a copy of Garden Maker by Christie Purifoy and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $16.   Botanic Spark 1804 On this day, Lady Holland sent home a parcel of seeds from Spain,  and they were Dahlia seeds. The story was shared in The Complete Dictionary of Practical Gardening (1807): In the spring of 1805 all the parcels of seed were sewn, including four varieties of Dahlia. The Dahlia Rosea was the most handsome and produced plenty of seeds. And all the plants of 1805, except one, were taken up before Christmas and planted in pots or large pans.  They were kept in a very cold greenhouse, and they began to push new shoots in the middle of April [the following year].   The genus Dahlia (books about this flower) got its name in the 18th century. Swedish botanist Andreas Dahl. Surprisingly after Lady Holland introduced Dahlias to Europe, many top gardeners thought the Dahlia was just too flamboyant to use in their gardens. But in modern gardens, Dahlias are beloved. Both the roots and the Dahlia flowers are used medicinally. The Dahlia is also the official flower of both Seattle and San Francisco. And if you're planning a wedding, Dahlias are the perfect flower for the bridal bouquet. In floriography or the language of flowers, the beautiful Dahlia represents commitment and everlasting love.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

For today's episode we read "Paying the Land," comics journalist Joe Sacco's book about the Dene people, resource extraction in the Northwest Territories, the legacy of Canadian colonialism, and residential schools. It's a big book with a lot to say on some weighty issues, but we also find time to discuss journalism as an institution, the convenient “boringness” of Canadian history, and even cottage core. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will be on "Death Note" volumes 3 & 4 by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.

I'd love to meet you in the group.   Important Events May 20, 1799  Today is the birthday of the prolific 19th-century French writer, poet, and the father of Realism in French literature, Honoré de Balzac. Today, the Maison de Balzac, or Honoré’s modest Paris home, has been turned into a museum. With its courtyard and garden, the house faced the Eiffel Tower and was a refuge for Honoré, who rented the top floor under his housekeeper's name (Mr. de Breugnol). The home had multiple exits, which allowed Honoré to flee his creditors quickly. Honoré’s friends used a password to be able to gain access to the house to visit him. Today a bust of Honoré de Balzac stands in the little garden where fans of his work can sit and enjoy refreshments during their visit. Laurel shrubs frame Honoré’s bust - a nod to the pivotal women named Laure in Honoré’s life: his mother Laure, his younger sister Laurence, his older sister Laure, and his lover and faithful champion Laure de Berny who was one year older than his mother. Honoré’s house is one of three home museums for French literary greats - along with the homes of Honoré’s dear friend Victor Hugo and George Sand. Today, Honoré’s five-room apartment contains his writing desk and chair, as well as his tea kettle and a coffee pot. Honoré was a notorious coffee-drinker and a night owl as he wrote his masterpieces. But for Honoré’s fans, his most famous possession was his oversized gold and turquoise-studded cane - the handle looks like it is covered in forget-me-knots. Honoré’s cane created a sensation in 1834 Paris, and soon fancy walking sticks were the standard of fashion for gentlemen. When Honoré was alive, his home smelled of pears. Honoré loved pears, and he stockpiled 1,500 pears in his pantry. He picked violets and lilacs for the woman he would ultimately marry in his garden: Ewelina Hańska. Their tragic love story was chronicled in their many letters to each other, which altogether read like a novel. Although she was married, Ewelina had started the affair by writing an anonymous fan letter to Honoré. Honoré and Ewelina’s relationship was forged in nearly two decades worth of letters to each other. Over the course of nearly twenty years, they had only met in person eight times before they were eventually married. Sadly, five short months after their wedding, Honoré died in Paris in 1850. In terms of his work, gardeners should know that Honoré’s 1835 book, Lily of the Valley, has nothing to do with the woodland plant used by Dior to create their famous fragrance in 1956. Instead, Honoré’s  book tells the story of unconsummated love, and the title was inspired by the bible verse from the Song of Solomon 2:1-2: I am the Rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys. As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters. Today, gardeners can remember Honoré in the 'Honoré de Balzac ®' rose; a pink-blend hybrid tea rose introduced in the United States by Conard-Pyle (Star Roses) in 1996. In 1845, Honoré wrote, “A young bride is like a plucked flower; but a guilty wife is like a flower that had been walked over.” He also wrote, “Love has its own instinct, finding the way to the heart, as the feeblest insect finds the way to its flower, with a will which nothing can dismay nor turn aside.” Finally, here’s a little verse from Honoré’s poem called The Camellia: In Nature's poem flowers have each their word  The rose of love and beauty sings alone; The violet's soul exhales in tenderest tone; The lily's one pure simple note heard. The cold Camellia only, stiff and white, Rose without perfume, lily without grace, When chilling winter shows his icy face, Blooms for a world that vainly seeks delight. Yet, in a theatre, or ball-room light, I gladly see Camellias shining bright  Above some stately woman's raven hair, Whose noble form fulfills the heart's desire, Like Grecian marbles warmed by Phidian fire.   May 20, 1913 On this day, the first Chelsea Flower Show was held at Chelsea General Hospital. Originally called the Royal Horticultural Society's Great Spring Show, the first Chelsea Flower Show was held in 1862 at the RHS garden in Kensington. Staged in a single tent, the first show made a profit of £88.   Unearthed Words Rikki-Tikki had a right to be proud of himself. But he did not grow too proud, and he kept that garden as a mongoose should keep it, with tooth and jump and spring and bite, till never a cobra dared show its head inside the walls. ― Rudyard Kipling,  English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi   Grow That Garden Library Petal by Adriana Picker This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is A World of Flowers Through the Artist's Eye.  Well, let me begin by saying that this book is absolutely gorgeous, and it contains original artwork by Adriana Picker. I love that her last name is Picker and that the title of this book is Petal; Somehow, that goes together. Now, as I just mentioned, Adriana is an artist - she's a botanical illustrator. In this book, she features the petals from all sorts of flowers - from simple daisies to exotic lilies. And she features all kinds of angles in her work. You're going to see close-ups, cross-sections of flowers and buds, and foliage that reveals the flower's unique characteristics. You're going to see architectural beauty, incredible colors, and texture that leaps off the page. Adriana writes about things like the fame of particular flowers and the folklore and traditions surrounding certain blossoms. She discusses the scent of flowers and floriography, which is the meaning and symbolism behind some of our favorite blooms - in addition to some fun facts and flower trivia. Another feature that I especially appreciate about Adriana's book is that she organizes her work by plant family. First, she covers the rose family and the legume family, and then she moves into the daisy family, the nightshade family, the orchid family, and so on. And I thought you'd enjoy getting a little taste of this personal story from Adriana that she shares and introducing her book. She writes, “When I was five years old, my maternal grandmother, Emma announced to my mother that I would be a florist. And every time I visited my grandmother, we would spend hours together in her beautiful garden, hunting for blossoms.  Well, I did not have very long in Emma's garden. She died when I was seven and my grandfather sold the home.  And on the day of her funeral, her roses were in full glorious bloom. And I collected a huge bunch for the dining table. My aunt Margo made me point out each Rose Bush I had picked from so that she could move them to her own garden and memory of her mother.  My botanical education continued after Emma's death furthered by my mother, Sally. also an avid gardener.” Now isn't that a wonderful glimpse into the early inspiration behind Adriana's work and art? I love that story. This book is 256 pages of beautiful lush botanical art from a woman with a lifelong passion for flowers, plants, and botanical illustrations. You can get a copy of Petal by Adriana Picker and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $26   Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart On this day and every May 20th, National Pick Strawberries Day is observed. Here are a few fun facts about this beloved sweet fruit: First, the etymology of the name strawberry is likely a corruption of the phrase "strewn berry." This would reference the way the plant produced thanks prolifically to runners, resulting in berries that were strewn about the ground. As for strawberry quotes, the author Toni Morrison once wrote: “I have only to break into the tightness of a strawberry, and I see summer - its dust and lowering skies.” And the author Tsugumi Ohba, Death Note Box Set, wrote “If you keep my secret, this strawberry is yours.”   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

I don't know if I've written this before, but follow both the White Sox and the OG favorite baseball team and the Dodgers as the local favorite baseball team and now the Padres as a lowkey third baseball team is just extremely wild. Watching a relatively successful White Sox team now decide to do basically nothing besides sign a closer replacement that is only going to be a marginal improvement over who he's replacing, compared to the Dodgers winning six division titles in a row and then trading for and signing Mookie Betts to a huge extension...is just frustrating. And then there's the Padres trading a very deep farm system for immediate improvements in addition to signing Kim Haseong. These are all billionaires who choose to spend their millions in different ways and, in the end, a season's worth of payroll losses is not going to be much to them. Ever. Labyrinth of Refrain : Dungeon RPG, original et plaisant.

On this episode of Now Streaming reviews from The HMC, hosts Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe review SHOT CALLER and Netflix's DEATH NOTE. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game ofThrones) stars as white collar working suburban family man whose negligence leads to vehicular manslaughter. Released from prison, he must orchestrate a major arms deal in order to appease gang leaders whose protection saved his life in prison. Coster-Waldau shines in this bloody, gritty crime thriller. Outside of Thrones, SHOT CALLER showcases Coster-Waldau skill at navigating complex character archs. Aided by an excepitional cast of supporting actors including, Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead), Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice), Emory Cohen (BROOKLYN) and Lake Bell (NO ESCAPE), and a solid script from writer/director, Ric Roman Waugh (SNITCH), SHOT CALLER is engaging, layered and tragic. We give it much Justice, 8/10. DEATH NOTE began its story journey as a Japanese manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. It has since been adapted into a novel, video game, live action anime and now a live action film produced by Netflix. The film is directed by Adam Wingard and written by Charles Parlapanides, Vlas Parlapanides and Jeremy Slater. The film stars Nat Wolff, Lakeith Stanfield, Margaret Qualley, Shea Whigham, Paul Nakauchi, Jason Liles and Willem Dafoe High school student Light Turner (Nat Wolff), finds detention to be a bit more exciting after he discovers a notebook labeled "Death Note" that magically allows him to kill people by writing down their names. When Demon, Ryuk (Willem Dafoe), keeper of the Death Note, appears and educates Light on the rules of the Death Note, Light decides to launch his own crusade against bullies and criminals. Other than Dafoe's entrance and some initial cow towing to horror fans with gore, this adaptation is so weak. The writers move the story from Japan to Seattle without developing culture backdrops, or commentary. There's no significant character development. The run away plot leaves you confused if you don't know the source material and, mad if you do. We were left wondering what the hell happened given the producers/director/writer had the blueprint to an amazing story. We therefore must Doom it 4.5/10

They begin with Kazuto Tatsuta's Ichi-F: A Worker's Graphic Memoir of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (Kodansha Comics). This is a 500+ page account of the reconstruction and cleanup in the wake of 2011's disaster in Fukushima. As the guys discuss, the text does two things at once: provides objective reportage of the situation surrounding Fukushima and reveals the author's very personal experiences  in securing and maintaining his role in the cleanup efforts. While both guys enjoyed the book, perhaps Derek more than Shea, they nonetheless wondered about Tatsuta's background as a mangaka -- "Kazuto Tatsuta" is a nom de plume, so it's difficult to determine any bibliography -- and any potential agenda (if any) underlying this work. After their focus on real-world disaster, the guys move into the realm of fantasy. Platinum End (VIZ Media) is a current shōnen series from Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, the same team behind Bakuman and Death Note. The second English-language volume was just released this month, so the guys have enough story under their belts to get a secure feel for the art and narrative. As Derek explains, the premise appears a little on the hokey side, at least at first, but as things develop the story begins to take on a life of its own, one that soon hooks you. Much of this is because of Obata's style, but there are also larger thematic issues that make this title worth exploring. The guys discourse over the text's theological import, its engagement with gender identity, and its satiric commentary on contemporary popular culture. This is definitely a series that both Shea and Derek will continue reading.
