Scarlett St Clair is a long time friend of the show and when she writes a book, she comes on the show. It's just what we do. I feel like our friendship has grown in front of you and having her back feels like we all get to hang out. Her new book, Apples Dipped in Gold is a fairy tale retelling that is set in a rich world with characters that we love to hate and love to love. She is a delight and I am always glad to have her here. So tell me, What are you doing for fun? Join us for the final book in Scarlett St. Clair's Hades and Persephone retelling - A Touch of Chaos. Hades has been captured and put in the labyrinth by Theseus, Persephone has recently killed her mother, and Theseus has let out a few Titans. Theseus remains committed to his goal of destroying all the gods and has the support of mortals and demi-gods. Will Hades and Persephone be able to stop him from succeeding or will Theseus destroy the gods and the world? TW: Discussion of sexual assault/rape.
My guest today is romantasy author Scarlett St. Clair, who has sold millions of copies of her books worldwide and is a #1 New York Times and international bestseller. We first met in France at le Festival du Livre de Paris (aka Paris Book Festival), where I got to witness firsthand the magnitude of her international fame.Today we talk about:* How she rose from a flop to become a global superstar in self-publishing, then later switched over to a traditional publisher* Why “No” just means “Yes, but in a different way”* Her unorthodox way of writing books* Nurturing a genuine community of readers and fans, and much more! Also, Applications are now OPEN for our $1,000 Scholarship for Aspiring Writers. Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and real cellphones in classrooms talk! Note: We'll be off next week due to the 4th of July falling around our usual episode prep time. See you the week after! That disastrous debate, and those disastrous SCOTUS rulings. Oof. We're joined by listeners and experienced teachers Chelsea and Amy to discuss the latest trends of cell phone bans across US schools. Chelsea and Amy help us understand what the biggest distractions are in classrooms with cell phones, and share their own opinions on cell phone bans in schools. They provide helpful context that isn't apparent if you don't have kids or aren't in the classroom: in the post-covid era, many kids are struggling with extreme addiction to their phones and social media. Do cell phones help or hurt in the event of an active shooter scenario? Other teachers submitted feedback, and it seems there is a consensus: cell phones are majorly disruptive in schools, but enacting laws around phone usage in schools is a complicated conversation. How do teachers navigate keeping their personal social media private? Are we connected with any of our school teachers on socials? This week's recommendations are across the board: Those Who Can't Do (Andrew), 'The Bear' on Hulu (Pam), 'Pearl' on Amazon Prime, Crocheting (Chelsea), and the 'Hades x Persephone Saga' by Scarlett St. Clair (Amy). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon and Apple Podcasts: Chelsea and Amy hang out to spill the tea about the dumbest reasons students have gotten detention or been suspended. We have some stories of our own, and we feel like an injustice was done to us! No, sprinkling your special green herb on food is NOT going to do anything for you... Learn more about your ad choices. This is a humorous mystery novel that follows Vera Wong, the owner of a teahouse and self-proclaimed amateur sleuth with what she believes is a penchant for solving crimes. She's witty and sharp and finds herself entangled in a murder investigation that seems to have an endless web of secrets. The story kicks off when Vera discovers a dead body and, armed with her quick wit and a determination to uncover the truth, she embarks on a quest to solve the mystery. The author successfully blends the seriousness of a murder investigation with comedic elements, creating a unique and engaging narrative that explores the complexities of the case and delves into cultural nuances, relationships, and moral dilemmas. How did we perceive Vera throughout the story? Were there any moments that made us laugh? Does the title of the book set the right expectations for what the story would entail? Join us as we discuss these questions and more in this episode of our spoiler-filled podcast.Great music huh?! The music for the intro and outro are segments from a song titled "Busy City" by TrackTribe, which was accessed through the YouTube audio library.Coming up next: A Touch of Chaos by Scarlett St. Clair

As the result of a recent mental breakdown, Ginette has left the fast-paced acting life of New York City and rented a house in the small town of Merrittville to isolate herself during her recovery. She has become obsessed with watching her neighbors. Mr. Elias spends the whole day sitting in front of a typewriter. Trixie plays with her dolls in her backyard. And the Lowells are an affectionate newlywed couple. This changes when Mr. Lowell's mother moves in. Ginette notices a man standing outside her window watching Mr. Lowell's mother, and since she can't seem to sleep, she sees the mother walking in the alleyway between their houses in the middle of the night…specifically 3 am, which we commonly call the devil's hour. The second time this happens, the mysterious man is following her, and Ginette gets the feeling that the mother is no longer living and that the mysterious man isn't a man at all. He's something worse. But Ginette can't seem to leave the house. Any time she tries to make for the front door, she is overwhelmed by nausea and a voice in her head repeatedly screaming to shutup shutup shutup. Is Ginette seeing ghosts? Or is she still having a psychotic break?Did Kayla's expectations of Simone St. James live up to the amount of hype Karey has been giving it? Smack and Gabi go over their best (and not so best) recent reads, most of which will be coming or going from the Smack Shelf (a shelf in Gabi's apartment that contains all the loans from Smack). The incomers are all surprisingly good YA reads while the outgoing books include three powerhouses - a perfect fairy-tale-esque novella, an incredible Malaysian-American ghost story, and a sci-fi novel with maybe the best multiverse worldbuilding we've ever seen. Other fun recent reads cover a paladin and necromancer begrudgingly becoming friends, a cat astronaut desperately trying to eat pizza, a Holmes-ian mystery with plenty of pining, and a Navy captain (who is definitely not a pirate) trying to deal with sea dragons (and pirates). Book discussed in this episode include: Blade of Secrets (Bladesmith #1) & Master of Iron (Bladesmith #2) by Tricia Levenseller The Corpse Queen by Heather Herrman Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves (Edge Worlds #1) by Meg Long A Touch of Darkness (Hades x Persephone #1) by Scarlett St. Clair Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning by Cathy Park Hong Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher Black Water Sister by Zen Cho The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman To Kill a Necromancer (Blackwing #1) & Hetgarib's Curse (Blackwing #2) by C.M. Alongi The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza (The First Cat in Space #1) by Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris (Illustrator) Death by Silver (Julian Lynes and Ned Mathey #1) by Melissa Scott and Amy Griswold The Bright and Breaking Sea (Captain Kit Brightling #1) by Chloe Neill

It's the first day of Women's History Month and this episode is exactly the right way to start it off. On today's episode, Bailey and Emily are back for the second half of their romance discussion. Last week, they read and discussed Jude Deveraux's 1989 novel, A Knight in Shining Armor. This week it's Scarlett St. Clair's recent title King of Battle and Blood and let's just say this one is WAAAYYYY less problematic. It's big on #tiktok right now and it also has a rating of THREE spicy peppers (which Bailey assures me means it's good!). Oh, yeah, and this episode is NSFW, obvs. Headphones if little ears are around! Also discussed in this episode: Weird character name pronunciations! Equality in romance novels! Flying sex in ACOTAR! Young Adult vs New Adult books Emily can't pronounce Isolde! More differences between 1980s and 2020s romances! Bailey creates the “Good Guy/Sauciness” scale! Emotional maturity is important!! Respect the NO. Be Kind - not nice! Flipping gender norms in romances! Guys, THE BAR IS SO LOW.
