When I was growing up, it was not uncommon to hear someone being told “Don't be so sensitive.” Typically this was said when a person was being accused of reacting too strongly to some minor action. Another similar statement could be “why are you so sensitive?” Sensitive skin is referred to as being problematic and requiring special care. A sensitive stomach is something that can easily cause us problems. Eyes that are sensitive to the light can make it hard to see.It seems that being sensitive, or too sensitive, is something to be avoided. The problem gets exacerbated when we put other variables into the mix. Men are not supposed to be sensitive. Women are allowed to be sensitive, but not too sensitive. Or maybe they are expected to be too sensitive because that's just how they are.But what about leaders? How sensitive are leaders supposed to be? Is sensitivity a virtue in leadership, or something that is supposed to be avoided? Does sensitivity cloud our judgment, or give us insights that allow us to make better decisions?Heather Dominick talks about how she was a victim of her own sensitivity. She experienced how being highly sensitive could negatively impact her mindset and her life. Despite all of this, she never realized that she was highly sensitive, and rather than being a flaw it was a character trait that she could use to help herself and others. Starting as a drama teacher, she decided to start her own business during the height of a recession. It was during this time that she started to understand what it meant to be a highly sensitive person. As a result, she began to think about her entrepreneurial journey differently. She describes it as a lightbulb moment, where she changed what she thought was necessary to create success. From this she created her Highly Sensitive Leadership Training Program for Entrepreneurs. It is a different approach from what has been traditionally thought necessary for business success. Rather than seeing sensitivity as a liability, she now views it as an asset and feature. Rather than trying to change who she is, she sees her sensitivity as part of her journey. And as we discuss, how this applies to designing experiences with sensitivity and awareness.
Being able to shift from resistance to resilience is an important skill to master as a highly sensitive in business and leadership, especially in our current times. Right now, we are all in a collective experience of tension created by seemingly opposing influences that are pushing and pulling and forcing decisions you might not feel ready to make or do anything about. Yet rather than this being a negative experience, this tension can be used as a proactive energy to fuel change and inspire you into action. This is a choice you have - to choose resilience instead of resistance. “Tension can be a proactive energy that fuels change and inspires you to action.” - Heather Dominick. Consistently engaging in nourishing relationships, especially within an aligned community, is a powerful way to accelerate growth and success for HSPs in business and leadership. Being in aligned community removes the element of feeling "other" and gives you access to what Rupert Sheldrake calls the "morphogenetic field". Through his theory of morphic resonance, groups with a likeness and alignment create accelerated learning simply by being part of that group, making for each member of the community possible, what alone would have been impossible. “Progress is slower when it's only one-on-one versus when there is this experience of morphogenetic resonance.” - Heather Dominick. I share how to get clear about your HSP needs and then specifically how to work with time to honor your needs, effectively communicate your needs to others (a.k.a. set boundaries) all so that you can be your most creative and profitable self in your business. “Utilizing 'off, on, and in' gives you the opportunity to prioritize self-study.” - Heather Dominick. In the journey of becoming and being an HSP in business and leadership, it's important to consistently engage in the process of shifting from an untrained HSP to a trained HSP. All in order to create with more ease. However, as HSPs we often get caught up in the false belief that in order to succeed in business and leadership we need to do it the same way as the other 80% who are not highly sensitive. So we forgo the value of paced process in exchange for "playing a bigger game hustle" which tends to toss us into the HSP Coping Cycle of Fear/Anxiety/Pushing/Hiding/Shame/Recovery, rather than motivating us to create productively. “The places where you are not inspired are actually the places where you are meant to be paying deep attention.” - Heather Dominick. In this podcast episode, I read an excerpt from my book "Different", where I vulnerably share my struggle to write my book. I came to realize I was guided to write it because I was meant to teach HSPs not just how to market and sell in their business differently, but how to step up and lead as a highly sensitive to create greater impact (and income) with a lot less effort through these extraordinary times. “My time to lead from my highly sensitive strengths has come.” - Heather Dominick. In this podcast episode, I discuss the importance of staying above the fray of socialized trends, especially as a highly sensitive in business and leadership. I share how our social self is born as a response to pressure from the world around us. And how if we stay stuck in this comparison trap we are privileging anxiety instead of choosing privilege of agency. Most importantly, I share what you can do instead. “Comparison is an act of giving in to the socialized trends.” - Heather Dominick. As entrepreneurs, we're living in a time when we get flooded, overwhelmed, and hit new heights of frustration or even fear. There is so much change, so much intensity and as humans we're seeing a collapse of faith and institutions and movements for social change. It's enough to send highly sensitive people running for the hills. Heather Dominick is both highly sensitive and highly successful. For more than a decade, she's trained and mentored highly sensitive entrepreneurs (HSEs) and leaders so they are able to work less while making more impact and income. Highly sensitive people have a nervous system wired to take in stimulation at a much higher degree; they feel it more deeply. “For those of us who are highly sensitive entrepreneurs and leaders, we're going to take that feeling of a deep sense of challenge and rather than running from it or getting flooded and overwhelmed, we're going to rise to meet it,” says Heather. Heather outlines the top three strengths of an HSE. The first is intuition, which she describes as thinking of the nervous system like an antenna. When you're trained, that access to stimulation isn't only negative. Heather trains leaders to intentionally use intuition, which knows three to six seconds ahead of your head what to do. When you can flex that muscle, you'll be able to use it to support you in decision making and understanding what those you serve need. The second main strength is empathy. Empathy is really being able to utilize a nervous system to have a clear, keen understanding of what another person is needing, when another person is feeling what another person is thinking. And lastly, Heather groups three together – though they are each their own separate strength: deep thinker, deep feeler and deep listener. These are all systems that will support you when you it comes to setting up systems for operations, marketing, selling, and leadership. One thing HSEs usually need to readdress is time. Heather refers to working with time as a relationship. Most of us are taught to manage time. But the 20% born into the world as highly sensitive, this strategy might not be effective. It tends to be too constrictive. When you make that shift from “time is something that I have to manage”, to “time is something that I can relate with”, then it's about how you want to engage. For HSEs, the essence of successful relationships in any regard, time included, is what do you need to be at your best? Discover if you need to, and then understand what your natural circadian rhythm is. Because if you take in stimulation at a much higher degree, and you take a time management system and kind of slap it on, and it doesn't work -- that's going to be massively overstimulating. You're going to have to work extra hard to try to get something that's supposed to help you, to work for you. Versus if you understand your circadian rhythm, you'll know when you work best. You can design your schedule and productivity around your circadian rhythm and take less time to actually create more. And this will look different for every highly sensitive person. Heather has written a book, DIFFERENT: The Highly Sensitive Leadership Revolution, about how to understand your own rhythm and apply it to your day-to-day productivity. “When there is that opening, there is an access to creativity, inspired insights, and you can literally quote unquote get things done,” says Heather. #HighlySensitiveEntrepreneur #HighlySensitivePerson #HSP #AskExpert #IntuitiveBusinessCoach #EntrepreneurLife #SalesCoach Read Heather's book, DIFFERENT: The Highly Sensitive Leadership Revolution: https://amzn.to/3QycnUQ Free Gift: Are you a highly sensitive entrepreneur: https://www.hsesuccessguide.com Connect with Heather Dominick: https://www.businessmiracles.com/ Other GoG episodes you might want to check out: What You REALLY NEED from an Intuitive Business Coach https://sarahwalton.com/need-a-business-coach/ The Art of Self-Control https://sarahwalton.com/take-back-self-control/ You can check out our podcast interviews on YouTube, too! http://bit.ly/YouTubeSWalton Thank you so much for listening. In this podcast episode, I go deep into what privilege of agency is, and what it isn't. I share my own journey of how I developed this concept and how I've used it to make massively impactful changes in how I operate. I discuss how it specifically relates to you as a highly sensitive in business and leadership and why this particular teaching is more important now than ever. So you will be able to step out of comparison traps and step up into your purpose and be the change you want to see in the world while also creating the personal success and freedom you desire. As a highly sensitive in business and leadership, living on purpose is the ultimate form of self-care. This requires you to face your overwhelm and learn that, as A Course in Miracles states, "peace is part of you and requires only that you be there to embrace any situation in which you are."Your life purpose is not what you do, or something you find, but is instead something you choose in every decision, action and interaction. It's not a legacy we leave, but a legacy we live. Our life purpose takes courage to feel what we naturally don't want to feel. “Every relationship becomes a lesson of love.” - Heather Dominick. In this podcast episode, I go deep into what containment is NOT, what containment IS, and how we can shift from overwhelm and overprotection into focus and flow. I discuss how the act of developing discomfort resilience is the opposite of overprotection, and is instead about taking personal responsibility for your emotions, recognizing that they don't have to control you. It is not the automatic HSP response, but it is a doable, teachable and important skill to master in spite of what's happening around you and in the world at large, especially as a highly sensitive in business and leadership. “Suppressing, ignoring, soothing your emotions won't make them go away." - Heather Dominick. Did you know research shows that a person who sets (and achieves) goals tends to have higher motivation, higher self-esteem and a greater sense of self-confidence and autonomy? Setting an achievable goal also gives a boost to your systolic blood pressure (SBP). However, it wouldn't surprise me if, as a highly sensitive, your experience with goal setting has been quite different. Here's why: setting goals rooted in comparison or based on what you think you "should be" doing actually lowers your blood pressure. Which slows you down, and has you feel like you're trudging through mud - with no motivation to actually take the actions needed to accomplish the goal. “We are the balance to the other 80 percent.” - Heather Dominick. There's no reward for being over-busy except burnout. That old-century definition of success, "the busier you are the more you've gotten done" is over. As we continue to live through exceptional world events, learning to consciously use your nervous system to stay focused is much more effective for us HSPs in business and leadership than a never ending to-do list. “Consistency is more important than life.” - Heather Dominick. It's all-too-common to feel overstimulated and overwhelmed with so many places to be, things to do, people to connect with and obligations to fulfill. Add in all of the other aspects of these never-ending exceptional times that we have been managing ourselves through and it's no surprise that so many HSP's turn into massive balls of walking anxiety. “All energy management, including the Order Form to the Universe is to support the calming of the nervous system and then therefore access to both agency and divinity showing you a new way, an opening, a glimmer to how to shift from past three D patterns into new five D opportunities.” - Heather Dominick. Gaining one's trust is a challenging thing to do, especially when you're leading a team. Some people don't quickly warm up to others, and it can be difficult to get them to follow through when you need them to. As a leader, you need everyone on your team to open up and trust you. But how can you do this? In this episode of the Int-HER-rupt podcast, host Linda Yates speaks with Heather Dominick, the owner of Highly Sensitive Entrepreneur. Listen to her advice to discover techniques to get your team to trust you as a leader. Who Is Heather Dominick? She is the founder and leader of Highly Sensitive Entrepreneur. Heather also created Business Miracles, a 21-day course to help highly sensitive people run successful businesses. In addition to her business, she holds a Master's degree and worked as a public high school drama teacher for eight years. What Is a Highly Sensitive Person? Numerous research studies show that some people are more sensitive nervous system to the environment than others. According to research, 20% of people are born with a nervous system that takes more stimulation. Many highly sensitive people tend to do better from being self-employed. Building Trust With Students Creating trust among students can be challenging for a teacher; one wrong move can easily break the trust. Heather learned the coaching in education (CIE) technique while studying at New York University. Instead of teaching as a teacher, she taught as a coach and found this technique was highly influential in gaining students' trust. Three Tips for Leaders Building Trust Honor the individuals in the room: Heather created systems focused on each member's strength. Don't expect everyone to be like you: Everyone is different, and you want to draw their differences out. Also, you don't want your team members to be like you. Establish the same expectations for your team members as you do for them: Share tips one and two with your team so they can understand that everyone is bringing something to the table. Breaking the Wrong Mindset For those who believe no one will ever trust them, Heather discusses the importance of creating a collaborative culture to help break this mindset. When it is established from the hiring process, it's easier to get team members to trust each other and the leader. As the leader, you must set the tone to make your team members follow. If you want them to trust you, you must also trust them. Lastly, you must have empathy as a leader and put yourself in someone else's shoes. Do you need help with getting your team members to trust you? Then listen to this week's episode of the Int-HER-rupt podcast to learn actionable tips on getting your team to trust. “Trust is the bonding element that allows a group of people or any connection between even two people to really be able to be on the same page. And from that place, there's a greater sense of ease for creating, for producing, for being of service, and just being able to get from an A to Z when it comes to any type of goal or project you're looking to bring across the line.” - Heather Dominick Resources Business Miracles Heather Dominick Instagram If this episode connected with you, reach out to Linda and let her know.
