274. Power of Pause: Why Your Brain Cannot Solve the Problem With Wendy Paige Sterling

The Game On Girlfriend Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2025 41:03

There is a misconception that pausing means ceasing any and all activity, that you are lazy, or that you are incapable. Ironically, the pause is actually where the acceleration happens. Are you up against a problem that you've had more than once? Maybe you're starting to notice this is a pattern; something's happening where you're constantly uncomfortable, things don't feel right, or you are exhausted. The truth is, your brain is not going to solve that problem for you. How do you deal with this? Today's guest, Wendy Paige Sterling, has the answer. She helps us tap into the power of the pause and walks us through how to move forward when we're feeling our most stuck. Wendy says that from a young age, she had the innate ability to be OK with how different she was—but that feeling got silenced. She was the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors on two sides of her family. So when her grandparents moved to the U.S., it was all about fitting in, the American dream. "I was not born to fit into anybody's mold or role," says Wendy. "I needed to finally stand up for myself to stop playing small, to stop feeling lost on a daily basis and seeking external validation, to stop feeling suffocated by the weight of other people's expectations." She says at the end of the day, her fire within was all about helping other women turn on their lights inside. Taking a pause and listening to their intuition would help guide them. "It's really about resetting your fuse so that you can ignite the fire within you to start living that dream, but ultimately, it's got to come in these moments of pause where we give ourselves that ability to not only breathe but to fully exhale," says Wendy. Those deep exhale moments can come with fear and doubt, but for Wendy, they mean choosing yourself and your authentic being.  We all have the power to pause. But Wendy says women juggling multiple balls—that they might see as accolades—feel the pressure to keep going; they can't put them down. She hates hustle culture and the idea of powering through. It only gives you a false sense of momentum because all you are doing is doing. But you're not present or connected; there is no intention or focus. "You think your focus is on the outcome, but you are completely ignoring everything in between," says Wendy. "And what the pause gifts you is the in-between, which then attaches the outcome that much faster." She says the pause silences your mind. It's in your mind that fear, doubt, regret, judgment, and ego live. It's loud and distracting. Wendy says she's not the type to meditate. Her pauses come on walks with the dog or even in the shower—they're places where you can hear your intuitive thoughts and inner wisdom. Intuition is a calm, easy, firm little, "Hey there." You're going to have no logic attached to it. Intuition is going to be something that you've never even thought of. "When your mind is driving the bus, it is not the right answer for you. But when your body gets curious, and it feels very calm, then that's the direction you can flow," says Wendy. Because listening to the noise isn't serving you, Wendy says we tend to downplay the ripple effect. If you're operating on fear, everybody in your universe is feeling that frequency. It's contagious. You can be more conscious about the energy you're putting out there. "This is why it's so important for us to slow down, to engage in more moments of pause so that we are feeling in deeper alignment, not only with ourselves but with the people that we want to bring into our life," says Wendy. "Or that the people that are in our life, how we want them to feel when they are with us." He represented the Eleventh Federal Reserve District on the Federal Open Market Committee in the formulation of US monetary policy and oversaw its 1,300 employees. Rob was previously the Martin Marshall Professor of Management Practice and a Senior Associate Dean at Harvard Business School. He serves as Chairman of Project A.L.S. and Co-Chairman of the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, is a board member of Harvard Medical School, St. Mark's School of Texas and is a member of the Advisory Council of the George W. Bush Institute. Previously he served as Chairman of the Investment Advisory Committee at Google and a trustee of the Ford Foundation. Proudly born and raised in Prairie Village, Kansas, Rob received a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Kansas and a master's degree in business administration from Harvard Business School. He has authored three books, including one our host, Paul Olschwanger recently finished, titled What You Really Need to Lead: The Power of Thinking and Acting Like an Owner. On today's episode, you would think we am going to ask Rob for his views on the economy or fed policy. Not so much, you can easily google Rob Kaplan and these topics. You are, however, in for a treat as we are going to talk more about his professional journey, life leading the Fed, proudest moments, and potential topics for his next book.

220. Top 3 Strengths of the Highly Sensitive Entrepreneur With Heather Dominick

The Game On Girlfriend Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 19, 2024 35:45

As entrepreneurs, we're living in a time when we get flooded, overwhelmed, and hit new heights of frustration or even fear. There is so much change, so much intensity and as humans we're seeing a collapse of faith and institutions and movements for social change. It's enough to send highly sensitive people running for the hills. Heather Dominick is both highly sensitive and highly successful. For more than a decade, she's trained and mentored highly sensitive entrepreneurs (HSEs) and leaders so they are able to work less while making more impact and income.  Highly sensitive people have a nervous system wired to take in stimulation at a much higher degree; they feel it more deeply.  “For those of us who are highly sensitive entrepreneurs and leaders, we're going to take that feeling of a deep sense of challenge and rather than running from it or getting flooded and overwhelmed, we're going to rise to meet it,” says Heather.  Heather outlines the top three strengths of an HSE. The first is intuition, which she describes as thinking of the nervous system like an antenna. When you're trained, that access to stimulation isn't only negative. Heather trains leaders to intentionally use intuition, which knows three to six seconds ahead of your head what to do. When you can flex that muscle, you'll be able to use it to support you in decision making and understanding what those you serve need. The second main strength is empathy. Empathy is really being able to utilize a nervous system to have a clear, keen understanding of what another person is needing, when another person is feeling what another person is thinking. And lastly, Heather groups three together – though they are each their own separate strength: deep thinker, deep feeler and deep listener. These are all systems that will support you when you it comes to setting up systems for operations, marketing, selling, and leadership. One thing HSEs usually need to readdress is time. Heather refers to working with time as a relationship. Most of us are taught to manage time. But the 20% born into the world as highly sensitive, this strategy might not be effective. It tends to be too constrictive. When you make that shift from “time is something that I have to manage”, to “time is something that I can relate with”, then it's about how you want to engage. For HSEs, the essence of successful relationships in any regard, time included, is what do you need to be at your best? Discover if you need to, and then understand what your natural circadian rhythm is. Because if you take in stimulation at a much higher degree, and you take a time management system and kind of slap it on, and it doesn't work -- that's going to be massively overstimulating. You're going to have to work extra hard to try to get something that's supposed to help you, to work for you. Versus if you understand your circadian rhythm, you'll know when you work best. You can design your schedule and productivity around your circadian rhythm and take less time to actually create more. And this will look different for every highly sensitive person. Heather has written a book, DIFFERENT: The Highly Sensitive Leadership Revolution, about how to understand your own rhythm and apply it to your day-to-day productivity.  “When there is that opening, there is an access to creativity, inspired insights, and you can literally quote unquote get things done,” says Heather. #HighlySensitiveEntrepreneur #HighlySensitivePerson #HSP #AskExpert #IntuitiveBusinessCoach #EntrepreneurLife #SalesCoach Read Heather's book, DIFFERENT: The Highly Sensitive Leadership Revolution: https://amzn.to/3QycnUQ  Free Gift: Are you a highly sensitive entrepreneur: https://www.hsesuccessguide.com Connect with Heather Dominick: https://www.businessmiracles.com/  Other GoG episodes you might want to check out: What You REALLY NEED from an Intuitive Business Coach https://sarahwalton.com/need-a-business-coach/  The Art of Self-Control https://sarahwalton.com/take-back-self-control/  You can check out our podcast interviews on YouTube, too! http://bit.ly/YouTubeSWalton   Thank you so much for listening. 214. Coaching the Unconscious Mind: Unlock Your Genius with Jenn Beninger

If you're living with self-doubts and are worried about what others think of you – you might not even know how much they're holding you back. Learn how to recognize your intuition and use it to translate what your inner critic is telling you to turn it into a force for good. Jenn Beninger is the Founder and CEO of Genius Unlocked Coaching Institute, a board-certified company, where she coaches, mentors, and transforms leaders' personal and professional lives. Jenn has refined how to delve into what's holding people back, and guiding them to successfully live in their purpose by calling on their intuition. After her first seminar about neuro linguistic programming, she realized she was living with outside influences directing where she wanted to go. “Ladies, that is the number one thing that's stopping you from anything that you want to do in your life, is that the most vulnerable judgment that you have about yourself,” says Jenn. What's going on in the internal world is how your external world presents itself to you. You set your goal with your conscious mind: I want this, I deserve this, I want the income. I want the business. I want to help people. I want that health. I want that wealth. Your unconscious mind is the goal getter. Finding alignment requires deep work with intuition, which is the translator between your conscious and unconscious mind. Intuition is one voice. The others are your inner critic, your inner child and your inner ego. Your inner critic tells you things like, I'm not worthy. I'm not good enough. The inner child tends to be fear or hurt based drawing on your lived experience. The inner ego digs in to be right. This is usually the identity you've given yourself or was given to you, and there is a desire to protect it. Your ego protects your inner child, and your inner critic protects the identity that you've already created. Your intuition gives you the learnings that you deserve to learn about yourself so that those voices can quiet down. Your intuition is always kind, but it may not always be gentle. Your intuition shines a light on the positive qualities and characteristics that you suppressed in order to live in this human experience. Your four voices are a way for you to learn more about yourself. You can honor all of them. Even if you're facing down a fearful inner child, it's like a warning light in your unconscious mind. Jenn says the two most vulnerable places for women is your bank account and the bedroom. For example, let's look at wealth. Consider a coaching exercise of questions to ask yourself. When I look at my bank account, what are the qualities and characteristics that come up about me? 2. When I look at all of those qualities and characteristics, what negative thoughts and emotions are attached to that? 3. What would you want the past version of yourself to know?   Understanding as coaches and as women how we operate and how our brains work will help us understand how we can create the change that we want to see in the world. 190. Can Coaches Really Make Money? BTS With MY Coach Kelsey Murphy

The Game On Girlfriend Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 22, 2023 41:52

One of the things I love about my coach Kelsey Murphy is how she talks about how data protects our emotions in the long run. So many coaches cry every day. We love everyone we see and want to save the world all the time. We have these huge hearts that shy away from numbers and data. But Kelsey marries the two in a way that lets us protect our big hearts so we can do more.    Kelsey is a career and business coach for Fortune 500 companies like Twitter and Facebook, along with entrepreneurs like Kelly Leveque (Jessica Alba's nutritionist). She's also the host of The Whiskey and Work Podcast and previously worked as the advertising account director.    It's rare to have a “coach and coachee” conversation that pulls back the curtains. Still, Kelsey is excited to share because she deeply believes in transparency.   “That's why I really like Marie [Forleo], I love Cathy [Heller], and I love Amy [Porterfield]. They're very honest and open, and so even though they have these shiny personas, you get in. You have these real conversations with them, and they're very transparent."   That transparency is echoed when Kelsey talks about her journey. In the beginning, Kelsey needed to freelance to support her business. It wasn't making money, and she didn't have someone in the wings funding her.    She says she had to swallow her pride for the first few years until her business generated enough income to support her, her retirement, and her savings.   She hid behind the curtains for many years, trying to figure out what she loved to do. She knew being an account director for Nintendo wasn't what she wanted to do and wouldn't grant her the freedom she wanted. The question became, what was the intersection between love and money?    What could she do that she would love, put in the world, and be known for that could also bring financial stability. She says sometimes it takes some people longer to figure that out and acknowledges that she wasn't a “doer.”    She's an over-thinker – so in building a business, her first years were slow as she reflected on all her different passions. She tested things out – from career coaching to massage therapy -- to find the place she could plant her flag, fall in love with and then create that true stream of income that wasn't hard.   Kelsey tried out career coaching for a while, which is how she met Marie Forleo. Marie brought her to coach people on their small businesses. As she started working, she found two niches – podcasts and creating a sustainable coaching business.   She tested out owning a podcast as an expert for a year and, in doing so, garnered referrals and the most money she's made at the time in her business.    "This is why you focus on one thing because that is where the momentum comes," says Kelsey.    However, when she started gaining referrals to speak at podcasting conferences, she realized she wanted to turn them down. It wasn't her passion, but coaching coaches were.   "I could talk about coaching for hours, the empathy behind coaching, the way coaches are built. The fact breaking my heart is that coaches are not successful financially because they're missing the tools to build that business," she says.   Kelsey says whether you're just starting out or you've been in the game but feel like nothing is hitting – remind yourself you're in it for the long game. It doesn't feel fun when you're in the trenches and like you're constantly problem-solving. Is pet insurance worth it?Hey fellow dog owner, I understand it's easy to be at a crossroads regarding pet insurance. Thousands of caring and protective pet owners have asked me that very question. I'm finally sharing what I tell dog owners who ask for pet insurance advice in this blog. With pet insurance marketed as a need and a must, should every pet owner get it? Read on for the answer.   Key Takeaways Pet insurance is optional, but there are big factors that make it a must. Your budget plays a great role in making the decision whether or not you get pet insurance for your dogs. Large and pedigree dogs need pet insurance because they are more prone to emergencies and expensive general care costs. RAISE CALMER PUPPIES WITH DOGGY DAN'S PUPPY COACH™️ Table of Contents Pet Insurance Worth It or Not? Here's My Story Three Factors That Make Pet Insurance Worth It Two Factors That Make Pet Insurance Optional Should I Really Get Pet Insurance for Large and Pedigree Dogs? Is Pet Insurance Worth It? Ten Things to REALLY Consider Before Getting One Is Pet Insurance Worth It? The Answer Depends On What You Need Pet Insurance – Worth It or Not? Here's My Story I love my dogs and every dog that comes to us is family. Because I'm also a protective pet owner, I opted for pet insurance for $500 a year for two dogs. The insurance spanned ten years and cost roughly $5,000. Yet, after paying for the hefty dog insurance cost, I don't think I have been able to make a claim that made me feel like I have made the most out of the insurance.   If anyone comes to me asking, “Should I get pet insurance for my dog?” I give this general answer: it really depends on so many factors. I won't immediately say, “Yes, get it!” because not all pet owners can shell out $250 a year for pet insurance. I won't also say, “No, don't bother!” because pet insurance benefits are also good. So many factors and considerations come into play in deciding if pet insurance is worth it, and I'm sharing them all with you in this blog. TRAIN DOGS THE BETTER WAY WITH DOGGY DAN'S DOG CALMING CODE™️ Three Factors That Make Pet Insurance Worth It How do you know if your pet needs pet insurance? Should you get one just because your vet tells you to do so? Other pet owners telling you it's a must? Because popular influencers are all about pet insurance? Getting pet insurance is a major decision that should be based on WHAT YOU REALLY NEED. To help you make the decision whether or not to get dog insurance, consider these three important factors. Factor #1: Your Financial Capacity for Emergencies You can never tell when your dog might need a $5,000 treatment or operation. If you can't afford to spend $5,000 just for a single emergency, consider getting pet insurance. Having pet insurance for emergencies allows you to give proper care for your pet whenever they need it. Factor #2: Your Peace of Mind Makes Pet Insurance Worth It You can purchase insurance policies that cover various types of medical treatments and procedures, including emergency care, surgery, and medication. If having a ready resource for emergencies give you assurance and peace of mind, pet insurance is worth it. By having pet insurance, you can feel secure knowing that they will not have to make difficult decisions about your pet's needs based on financial constraints. Pet insurance is worth it because it eliminates stress and worry of unexpected veterinary bills, which can be expensive and difficult to manage. Factor #3: The Breed and Size of Your Dogs It's hard not to feel the weight of the expenses when caring for a big or pedigreed dog. The costs can add up quickly leaving you feeling anxious and uncertain. But don't worry, you're not alone. Studies have shown that these dogs are more prone to health issues, making it even more important to prioritize their care. CALMER PUPPIES TURN INTO CALMER DOGS. START NOW WITH PUPPY COACH™️ I know it's tough to hear, but if you have a larger or pedigreed dog, chances are you'll be spending more than the average pet owner. That's why pet insurance is a no-brainer because for bigger dogs, pet insurance is worth it. It's like a safety net, protecting you and your furry companion from any unexpected health issues that may arise. Investing in pet insurance can bring a sense of comfort and relief because it gives you a cushion to fall back on in case of any tragic events. It's all about providing the best possible care for your beloved pet while reducing the financial burden and stress that comes with it. Two Factors That Make Pet Insurance Optional While pet insurance can provide financial protection and peace of mind for pet owners, it is ultimately a personal decision based on individual circumstances and preferences. It is not mandatory and pet owners can choose to self-insure or pay for veterinary expenses out of pocket. Here are three factors that can help you cross—without guilt!—pet insurance off your list of pet care must-haves. Factor #1: You Have the Budget If you have access to a substantial amount of money, such as $5,000, $10,000, or even $20,000 — and you don't mind spending it on pet care alone — you can choose to opt out of pet insurance. If you feel confident that you can cover the cost of unexpected veterinary bills by using savings or borrowing against their mortgage, pet insurance can be optional. RAISE DOGS THAT TRUST YOU WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE™️ Factor #2: Your Dog is Low-maintenance Low maintenance dogs, such as those who require minimal grooming or have few breed-specific health issues, may not require pet insurance. These dogs are generally less likely to develop chronic health problems, require frequent visits to the veterinarian, or need costly medical procedures. Now here's a little caveat from Doggy Dan: while pet insurance may not be necessary for low-maintenance dogs, having a financial plan in place for unexpected veterinary expenses is still essential to ensure that you are prepared for any eventuality. Should I Really Get Pet Insurance for Large and Pedigree Dogs? Large and pedigree dogs may be more prone to certain health conditions than other dogs, so getting pet insurance is an advantage. These breeds may be more likely to develop conditions such as hip dysplasia, cancer, and heart disease, which can require expensive medical treatment. In addition, larger dogs are also more susceptible to injuries, such as ligament tears, that may require surgical intervention. Given the potential costs associated with these health issues, pet insurance can provide valuable financial protection for large and pedigree dog owners. With the right coverage, pet insurance can help cover the cost of expensive medical treatments, surgeries, and medications. By investing in pet insurance, you can have peace of mind knowing that your dogs are prepared for any unexpected veterinary expenses that may arise. Is Pet Insurance Worth It? Ten Things to REALLY Consider Before Getting One #1: Coverage of Your Pet Insurance Consider what types of incidents and procedures are covered by the insurance policy, such as accidents, illnesses, and routine care. #2: Exclusions Be aware of any exclusions or limitations in the policy, such as pre-existing conditions or certain breeds that may not be covered. #3: Deductibles Determine the amount of deductible you are comfortable with, which is the amount you pay before the insurance kicks in. #4: Premiums Compare premiums from different insurance providers to find a policy that fits your budget. Luckily, you can find pet insurance policies with flexible premiums. CALMER DOGS FROM PUP TO POP WITH DOGGY DAN'S DOG TRAINING PROGRAMS #5: Reimbursement Rates Understand how reimbursement rates work and the percentage of the vet bill that will be covered by the policy so you'll know what to expect. #6: Waiting Periods Find out if there are any waiting periods before coverage begins, and how long they last. Knowing this allows you to plan ahead and make sure that you have coverage in place when you need it. #7: Maximum Payouts Be aware of any maximum payouts or caps on coverage that may be included in the policy. You'll want to make sure that the policy provides sufficient coverage for your pet's potential medical needs, as well as any conditions that your pet may be prone to based on their breed or age. It's also important to note that some pet insurance policies have a maximum payout per year, while others have a maximum payout per condition. Understanding the details of the policy and the maximum payout limits can help you make an informed decision about which policy is right for you and your pet. #8: Customer Service Research the quality of customer service provided by the insurance provide before getting pet insurance. Don't forget to read reviews from other pet owners. CLICK HERE: THE DOG TRAINING PROGRAMS TRUSTED BY THOUSANDS OF DOG OWNERS #9 Provider Network You can say that pet insurance is worth it is when you can use it for the services of the vet of your choice. Consider whether the insurance provider has a large network of veterinarians and specialists in your area. #10 Pet's Age and Health Take into account the age and health of your pet, as well as their breed and any previous health issues, to determine if pet insurance is worth it or necessary. This factor can also help you choose the best insurance coverage. Is Pet Insurance Worth It? The Answer Depends On What You Need “Should I buy pet insurance?” The answer to this question depends entirely on you. Pet insurance is optional, and not getting one doesn't mean you are a bad dog owner and you don't care enough for your pets. In the end, it all boils down to what you feel about these questions: Are pet insurance costs too much for you? Is getting pet insurance worth it for your peace of mind? Do you want to be able to give your dog the care that they need, when they need it? Is your budget enough to pay for emergency expenses out of your pocket? Is your dog prone to illnesses? Do they require more pet care expenses? Having pet insurance is good; there's no doubt about that. However, when it's currently out of your budget, or if you feel like the $250/year insurance cost is quite a reach, getting it for another time doesn't make you any less of a loving pet owner. I always believe pet owners have a strong gut instinct when it comes to raising dogs, so trust it. Is pet insurance worth it? The answer depends on you because you know what's best for you and your pet. May the best choice win! ~ Doggy Dan

You might believe that leaders are born, not made. Perhaps you think that you need to hold an important job to be a leader―that you need permission to lead. Leadership is one of the most important aspects of our society. Yet there is enormous disagreement and confusion about what leadership means and whether it can really be learned. As leadership expert Robert Steven Kaplan explains in this powerful new book, leadership qualities are not something you either have or you don't. Leadership is not a destination or a state of being. Leadership is about what you do, rather than who you are, and it starts with an ownership mind-set. For Kaplan, learning to lead involves three key elements: Thinking like an owner A willingness to act on your beliefs A relentless focus on adding value to othersKaplan compellingly argues that great organizations are built around a nucleus of people who think and act with an ownership mind-set. He believes that leadership is not a role reserved only for those blessed with the right attributes or situated in the right positions of power. Leadership is accessible to each of us―today. It requires a process of hard work, willingness to ask questions, and openness to learning. This book aims to demystify leadership and outlines a specific regimen that will empower you to build your leadership skills. Kaplan tells real-life stories from his own experience of working with various types of leaders seeking to improve their effectiveness and make their organizations more successful. He asks probing questions, provides exercises, and suggests concrete follow-up steps that will help you develop your skills, create new habits, and move you toward reaching your unique leadership potential. What You Really Need to Lead will help you develop your capacity to lead by unlocking your power to think and act like an owner.

How should we approach decisions about children, especially our own? That's the question that motivates my guest today, Emily Oster. She is a Professor of Economics at Brown University and currently a visiting Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. Through her books and newsletter, Emily has become something of a data guru to many parents confused by the torrent of conflicting advice and "studies show" headlines; she describes her work as "part memoir, part meta-analysis"  We talk about Emily's new book, “The Family Firm: A Data-Driven Guide to Better Decision Making in the Early School Years”; how to go about decisions such as bedtimes, extracurricular activities, and of course, when to buy your child a phone. We spend some time on how to evaluate risks, opportunity costs and counterfactuals in the parenting enterprise, and in particular the trade-offs between risk and independence. We also discuss her recent work on the impact of COVID on children and education; Emily has assembled a unique dataset on this question, and became a strong advocate on the need to return quickly to in-person learning, not just for or even mainly for education reasons, but for mental health ones.  I found this a thoroughly stimulating and enjoyable conversation - my only regret is that I wasn't able to read Oster's work when my own kids were younger! One of the things I like is the way she explodes lots of myths about the impact of various decisions on your children; which has the effect of lowering the stakes, and hopefully giving parents the chance to relax just a bit.  Emily Oster Emily Oster is a Professor of Economics at Brown University and currently a visiting Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. Previously, she held a position at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. Her expertise is wide ranging, but is best known for her work on the economics of family and parenting. Oster's newest book, along with her book Cribsheet, are New York Times bestsellers, not least because of her expert ability to translate economic data to the public.  More Oster:  Her new book, “The Family Firm: A Data-Driven Guide to Better Decision Making in the Early School Years”, is out now!  Previously she wrote, “Cribsheet: A Data-Driven Guide to Better, More Relaxed Parenting, from Birth to Preschool” and “Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong-and What You Really Need to Know”  For more of her writing, Oster is often featured in the New York Times, the Atlantic, and Slate. Additionally, she has a weekly newsletter, ParentData, which offers really interesting and informative discussions of parenting.  You can also follow Emily on twitter, @ProfEmilyOster, or on her website.  Also mentioned I referred to the book “How Not to be a Hypocrite: School Choice for the Morally Perplexed Parent,” authored by Adam Swift.  Although I don't suggest watching it, I referred to this video which captured the angry response of parents in Franklin Tennessee, following a decision to require masks in schools.  We also discussed Oster's dashboard which started collecting data on schools and childcare early on in the pandemic.  The Dialogues Team Creator & host: Richard Reeves Research: Ashleigh Maciolek Artwork: George Vaughan Thomas Tech Support: Cameron Hauver-Reeves Music: "Remember" by Bencoolen (thanks for the permission, guys!)

Recently I was a guest on Lauren LeMunyan's Spitfire Podcast. Lauren and I are both coaches who work with executives to become consciously profitable. The question is, how? Leaders who are executives and business owners have to keep up with legislation, maintain profitability to retain value within the company, and rely on people to make those things happen. As if that isn't tricky enough, those leaders have to lead people who, in 2021, are dealing with the pandemic - working remotely and isolated, while dealing with the social reckonings of the lack of equity, inclusion and diversity. No one wants to be part of the problem. Everyone wants to offer a solution. What is a leader today to do? In this interview we talk about legislation that is in the Senate for committee review that will impact M&A activity for startups. We also tie it to the questions that Victoria M. Grady poses in a recent article for leaders who want to be value added to their teams in transition. Finally, we discuss our upcoming webinar, "How To Create A Psychologically Safe Team" on Monday, April 12th, 2021. In our second episode, we talk to Dr. Jessica Stern, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. She has spent many hours sitting with people, helping them sort through what is true in their life, and guiding them as they name what they want to be true.  We asked Dr. Stern to help us discuss passion and the longing for meaningful work. In this conversation, we cover passion projects, the drive to make a difference in the world, what drives people on a journey to create - like this podcast - and why people often fail in their endeavors.  It's a privilege to have the opportunity to pursue projects of passion. Dr. Stern helps us unpack the components of modern privilege, both in time and resources. These things put us in a position to create and build - whether it's a new business, a non-profit, or a podcast.  What is this “itch” many of us get -- the itch to venture out into new projects, often propelled by the question “am I doing enough?” This is a great conversation. Emily Oster is Professor of Economics at Brown University and a mom of two. She has written two parent's guides to the chaos and frequent misinformation that often occurs in the early years of parenthood. She addresses, and often debunks, myths on breast feeding, sleep training, language acquisition, and more. In both her books -- Cribsheet: A Data-Driven Guide to Better, More Relaxed Parenting, from Birth to Preschool and Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom is Wrong and What You Really Need to Know -- she aims to create a world of more relaxed pregnant women and parents. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. In this episode, Stew and Emily discuss the state of the research on parenting and how much of can result in one-size-fits-all recommendations that may not be accurate or useful for individual children, parents, and families. In describing the source of inspiration for her books on parenting, Emily explains her journey from her first pregnancy through her current situation, raising two children, and how the medical recommendations she received were not as helpful as she’d hoped. Using the skills and methods from her training as an economist, she assessed the state of the literature to help herself and others. With the exception of vaccinations -- where the research is crystal clear that they are a good idea -- she found that for most other parenting decisions the answer is essentially “it depends.” So do what’s right for you and your family but learn to ask the right questions, which is what her books help you to do. In today’s high-pressure environment, her reasoned, evidence-based approach is a balm for young families and those who care about them. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Parenting is a wonderful, terrifying, joyful, horrible, lovely thing. Emily Oster, best-selling author of Cribsheet, offers a way to wade through the often contradictory advice without losing your mind. “Entrepreneurship is not just one skill. It’s a lot of different things you learn along the way.” - Laura Shook-Guzman (8:17-8:22)Sonya Stattmann & Laura Shook-GuzmanWomen in the Business Arena The desire for personal and professional freedom is pushing people of all ages to start their own businesses. But there’s an impractical reality that’s setting in. A lot of would-be entrepreneurs think they’re going to strike it rich with nothing but a laptop and an idea. The reality is that you need so much more to build and maintain a profitable business. Success requires you to consider the things you need to do and the skills you need to learn to achieve your goal. The path to entrepreneurship has ups and downs. Your ability to carry out your vision depends on a solid foundation built on much more than a dream. The truth is, the experience of running a business provides the real lessons that lead to future success. In my Women in the Arena™ program, I focus on experiential learning, helping women work “in” their business to understand through experience what works and what doesn’t. “The experiential part of business offers the most learning - what we want, what we don’t want, what works, and what doesn’t.” - Sonya Stattmann (33:16-33:27) In order to succeed in business, we need to have the right expectations. Along the way, some failures are inevitable. If we take it personally, we will continue to struggle, and may end up calling it quits. Setting appropriate expectations gives the space needed to maintain a healthy forward-looking perspective. Building a sustainable business requires a large capacity for discomfort. Ignore the myths about achieving success overnight. Instead, focus on bridging the gap between passion and building skills you’ll need in business. Apply those skills to gain the life experience that supports education. Entrepreneurship comes from the things you learn along the way, not just one skill. Success in Business Requires Investment Business owners face plenty of risks. Markets can change or become saturated. People are savvier about Internet marketing, increasing the competition and making it harder to stand out. Business coaches can help new entrepreneurs start on the right track, but hiring the wrong coach forces many entrepreneurs to want to go it alone. It’s easy to fall into the trap that it’s possible to get buy without investing in a coach. This is a dangerous mindset. The right coaching saves you thousands of dollars and years of wasted time and effort. The most successful entrepreneurs are willing to invest in experts who can guide them. They know the importance of investing back in their business. Without investment, it’s unrealistic to think it’s possible to maintain a sustainable business. Business coaching isn’t a luxury. It’s an essential part of succeeding in today’s marketplace. Finding and hiring the right coach is one of the first things you should do for your business.   “You can have a successful business, but it requires an understanding of business and definite skill building.” - Sonya Stattmann (12:31-12:41) What You Really Need to Build a Profitable Business Get your idea down on paper and take it to people you trust to give you feedback before moving forward. Entrepreneurs often put themselves in a bubble, thinking they’ve got the greatest idea. But an experienced and honest coach or mentor can keep you out of the echo chamber so you know the strengths and weaknesses of your idea. Understand your target market, which is the foundation of your business. Your success depends on the demand for your service or product. Your offer has to be specific to the needs of your audience, and they have to want it badly. Knowing your audience lets you customize your offer for a better response. You can test your idea to see if people are willing to invest their hard-earned money in your service or product. This only happens when you align your values with those of your target audience. Success takes more than a laptop and an idea. Thinking you can do it without others or without learning new skills minimizes what it actually takes. Even a business with a solid foundation can take at least three years to become stable and profitable. If you haven’t built that foundation with education, experience, and skills, then that’s where you need to start. #080 — Caffeine, Alcohol, and Television: What’s True? — Episode 080 Conventional wisdom—and most official recommendations—tell us that we must abstain entirely from coffee and alcohol for the duration of pregnancy to avoid very serious consequences. And once our kids are born, experts urge us to keep our children away from screens to prevent behavior problems and poor academic performance in the future. But what does the data say? Is it really the end of the world to have a cup of coffee in the morning? How about an occasional glass of wine? What is wrong with letting our kiddos watch an episode or two of Dinosaur Train?  When economist Emily Oster got pregnant, she also got curious about the advice she was getting. Some recommendations were based on her age alone, and sometimes she found it difficult to get any answers at all. So, she started digging into the data. Eventually, Emily’s research became Expecting Better, and today, she joins me to discuss her approach to writing for a popular audience and the somewhat unintentional way the book was born. Emily describes how her background as an economist shapes her decision-making and how to go about judging the quality of a particular study. I ask Emily for insight on the data around caffeine, alcohol, and screen time for kids, and she explains why two people can see and understand the same data—yet make different, and equally valid, decisions. Listen in for Emily’s take on making corrections to our thinking based on new evidence and get a sneak peek at what’s covered in her forthcoming book!
