In this week's episode, we are covering: Communication: More Than Just Talking One of our biggest struggles has been truly understanding each other. Robyn would talk for hours, feeling unheard, while Victor would listen intently but miss the emotional core of what I was saying. It wasn't about the words, but about the feeling behind them. Victor's perspective was different. He was trying to find the core message, the one sentence that would validate my feelings. But our communication styles were fundamentally misaligned. The Power of Understanding Personal Growth We discovered that our individual growth paths were crucial to our relationship. Victor, for instance, requires extensive self-care – sometimes up to 4-5 hours daily. This isn't indulgence, but a necessary process of emotional and physical reset. For Robyn, growth meant learning to trust the universe, to understand that I couldn't force change in Victor, but could only transform myself. Breaking Down Our Communication Differences Our Myers-Briggs types play a significant role in how we communicate: - Victor is more focused on feelings, memories, and past experiences - Robyn is driven by future goals, efficiency, and forward momentum. This fundamental difference used to create conflict, but now we've learned to see it as a strength. The Turning Point: Rediscovering Connection We started spending time together in our hot tub, reconnecting and trying to understand each other's perspectives. We realized that: 1. Individual growth is crucial 2. Communication is about understanding, not just talking 3. Relationships require constant intentional effort Our Relationship Toolkit We've developed strategies that have helped us: - Practice radical open-mindedness - Communicate honestly - Respect individual journeys - Create shared goals - Maintain personal growth A Message of Hope To couples struggling in long-term relationships, we want to say: Don't give up. Relationships are not about perfection, but about continuous growth and commitment. Key Takeaways: - Prioritize your partnership - Communicate openly - Maintain individual growth - Be patient with yourself and your partner - Regularly reassess and realign your relationship Our Relationship Course We've created a relationship course that breaks down our journey into four key elements: 1. Understanding personal wounds 2. Effective communication 3. Shadow work 4. Contract renegotiation The Secret Sauce: Manifestation and Trust Perhaps our most powerful tool has been manifestation. By consistently visualizing and believing in our desired outcome, we've been able to create remarkable experiences – from world travel to deepening our connection. Final Thoughts Marriage is not a destination. It's a continuous journey of growth, understanding, and recommitment. Some days are harder than others, but the key is to keep showing up, keep loving, and keep believing in each other. When God calls you to lay it down, how willing are you? My guest last week, Carol Kent, shared her story of surrendering her son JP completely to the Lord. The faith that it took, the freedom she has found in sharing their story with others and how joy is possible amidst hard circumstances. "I pray for moms out there whose children have made wrong choices that have been devastating, not only to them, but to their families, to, to those who are in their sphere of influence, who hurt for them. And Lord I pray. That we would as moms choose to seek your face first and to get our joy and our strength from your word.” ~Carol Kent Our prayer this week is for you to "lay it down" before the Lord, it may very well be the ultimate act of worship when you trust Him enough to give it to him fully. How do we have Unshakable Faith in Unthinkable Circumstances? Today's guest, Carol Kent, shares with us how she had to unmask shame and guilt and pursue unshakable faith since her sons conviction and imprisonment for first-degree murder. Her story will encourage you, and inspire you to run to Jesus despite the circumstances. Her book "When I Lay My Isaac Down," is a reminder that we may face an "Isaac Experience" in our lives. Crisis may be thrust upon us with no warning and no instructions. Our "Isaacs" are the heart sacrifices we make when we choose to relinquish control and honor God with our choices when all seems lost. SUMMARY OF COLOSSIANSThis letter is written to a young church: The Apostle Paul writes this letter from prison to a young church in the city of Colossae that they may grow in “maturity to Christ” (1:28), despite the cultural pressures that they were experiencing. Christ began a new Kingdom: The foundation for resisting cultural pressure is recognizing we have been saved from ourselves and are now citizens of a new Kingdom– established in Christ. (1:13;1:15-20;3:1) Spiritual maturity is learning to live in that new Kingdom: Paul believes that learning to live in the Kingdom of Jesus transforms every aspect of our lives. THE ACHE FOR BELONGING.“We all want to be part of something bigger than ourselves”; is a phrase that almost needs no explanation for we all know the ache for belonging. An MIT Study published in Nov. 2020 found that humans crave social interactions in the same region in our brain that we crave food. A different study indicated that our experience of social isolation or loneliness originates in the same region of the brain in which we experience the sensation of physical pain. We all seem to be looking for a community of meaningful participation. The Church is called to be a collaborative community; collaborating with God and one another. THROUGHOUT THE BIBLICAL NARRATIVE GOD DEMONSTRATES A DEEP DESIRE TO COLLABORATE WITH HUMANITY. “The human job description…found in chapter 1 of Genesis indicates that God assigned to us collectively the rule over all living things on earth, animal and plant. We are responsible before God for life on the earth. However unlikely it may seem from our current viewpoint, God equipped us for this task by framing our nature to function in a conscious, personal relationship of interactive responsibility with him. We are meant to exercise our ‘rule' only in union with God, as he acts with us. He intended to be our constant companion or co-worker in the creative enterprise of life on earth. That is what his love for us means in practical terms.” – Dallas Willard, The Divine Conspiracy, 22 THE GOSPEL CAN BE UNDERSTOOD AS GOD'S INVITATION TO BE HIS COLLABORATING PEOPLE. “The task of the church is to serve as the best example of what God can do with human community.“ – Stanley Hauerwas “What you do in the present—by painting, preaching, singing, sewing, praying, teaching, building hospitals, digging wells, campaigning for justice, writing poems, caring for the needy, loving your neighbor as yourself—will last into God's future. These activities are not simply ways of making the present life a little less beastly, a little more bearable, until the day when we leave it behind altogether. They are part of what we may call building for God's kingdom.” – NT Wright, Suprised by Hope To collaborate with God is to understand his plan for the future, and to simply work towards it. “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” – Col 3:1–2. PAUL'S MOTLEY CREW OF COLLABORATORS. Two Messengers (Tychicus, Onesimus), three Jewish collaborators (Aristarchus, Mark, Jesus “Justus”), three Gentile collaborators (Epaphras, Luke, Demas), and a few final greetings (Nympha, the Church of Laodicea, and Archippus). “Christian friendships are call-and-response friendships. We tell each other over and over, back and forth, the truth of who we are and who God is. Over dinner and on walks, dropping off soup when someone is sick, and in prayer over the phone, we speak the good news to each other. And we become good news to every other.” — Tish Harrison Warren, Liturgy of the Ordinary OUR SPIRITUAL PRACTICE IS TO IDENTIFY & CENTER FRIENDSHIPS IN CHRIST. 1. Make friends with Christians who spur you towards the good.2. This means you need to show up to the Christian community. 3. You must put yourself out there– be intentional. 4. Keep working at friendship.
What does the Bible say about Hope? “I hope my team wins!” “I hope the grocery store has what I'm looking for!” “I hope I get to see my friends soon!” We toss around the word “hope” very lightly. But what does hope really mean? Hope To trust in, wait for, look for, or desire something or someone; or to expect something beneficial in the future. Today's action step is intentionally simple. Spend a few minutes today thinking about the hope you have from God, in His word, and in His love. Here are a few Psalms you can meditate on: For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. (Psalm 62:5) You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word. (Psalm 119:114) But the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love. (Psalm 147:11)

Living Hope in Troubled Times: Holy Conduct Built on Holy Grace | 2.7.21 Text: Peter 1:13-25 3 Requirements for Living in Hope To be hopeful requires a ready mind. To be hopeful requires holy conduct. To be hopeful requires sincere love.
The 5K has become such a popular race distance. You can find multiple 5Ks year-round all across the country. They’re fun to run. They’re fun to walk. They’re fun as community builders. But we rarely know the stories behind them…behind each individual 5K. The reason for the race and what the funds are being used for. I’ve been trying to get you all to sign up for the Race for Hope for months now. And there’s still time to sign up, by the way. The 5K, half, and full marathon will be held February 22nd in Lufkin and the link to register is in my show notes. But do you know the purpose of the Race for Hope? To raise money for East Texas Cancer Alliance of Hope. A few years ago, Ashley Berry faced a cancer diagnosis. As she went through treatment, her community stepped in and helped her financially. She’s now been cancer free for five years and she formed East Texas Cancer Alliance of Hope to help others in her community who are fighting cancer by providing groceries, or gas money, or school clothes for their kids. She believes in community. So does today’s guest, Erin Froehner. When Erin gave birth to her first baby, Addalyn, she found out Addalyn had trisomy 18. It was other parents of children with trisomy who provided her with the skills and knowledge she needed to take care of Addalyn. When Addalyn passed away a few years ago, Erin took over Hope for Trisomy, a non-profit organization that provides support, education, and resources to other families who are loving kids with trisomy. And each March, Erin hosts a 5K in Arlington, Texas. The 5K raises funds for Hope for Trisomy, provides a way for her community to meet new people, and educates the runners and walkers about the children the organization has helped. Here is my conversation with Erin about Addalyn, Hope for Trisomy, and the 5K. When last we heard from the Northwest heroine she had a dilemma. To rip back and use the correct needle size or keep going and bind off, leaving a mistake that probably no one would notice. What did she do? Read on and find out! Marsha’s Projects Almost done with Shared Rib by Anne Hanson as a cowl. Old Maiden Aunt fingering in the colorway Crimson Lips. I finished the six rows of ribbing and was about to bind off when I realized the ribbing was suppose to be worked with the smaller needles. Ripped back and knitted ribbing again. Daphne’s Skull designed by Ellen Sibelius of Wooly Wonders is not quite finished.I haven’t picked it up since we last recorded. I’ve set a goal to finish it by Stitches West the end of February because KnittyBarb wants me to bring it to the show. I’m about to start the toe decreases of the first sock of my John O Groats Socks using Yarns From the Plains fingering weight in the colorway Cumbrian View. I bought the yarn from the dyer at the Caithness Craft Retreat in May. The pattern I’m using is the sock recipe from Nancy Lindberg, NL7 Knit to Fit Socks. Thinking about casting on a sweater either using New Lanark DK or Dovestone Baa Ram Ewe. Need a project for my trip to Iceland in January. Fix it or Nix It Ended the first of January. Neither Marsha nor Kelly got their button bands reinforced, but there were a few fixes for each and Kelly nixed a few pairs of half-finished socks. Events Winter Weave Along--Started October 15 in the Two Ewes Ravelry Group. This weave along goes until the end of March so you have plenty of time for weaving projects. Stitches West is February 20-23 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. There is a podcaster meetup hosted by Yarniacs and 2 Knit Lit Chicks on Saturday the 22nd in the lobby bar area of the Hyatt (connected to the Convention Center). Fiber Goals--do you have them? Kelly is interested in the tension between goals, challenges and to-do lists, and the idea that fiber crafts are a hobby that we do for fun. Do you have more fun when you have goals and challenges or when you have wide open choices? We can discuss this on the Two Ewes Fiber Adventures Group on Ravelry. Come join the conversation! Marsha’s Hopes for 2020 Health (weight, walking, core, knees, vitamins, attitude) In this part of the conversation we talked a little about developing habits and the book The Power of Habit Fun (fibery stuff, travel, cooking, agility) Fiber (colorwork class, Mark’s afghan, spinning, more projects for others) Here Kelly said that she is looking for balance in her hobbies so that she is able to do all of them. Decreased governmental chaos Marsha's distress and anxiety over the state of the country transcends political "sides" and led Kelly to add the following resource. Bryan Stevenson on Hope To hear an excellent discussion on hop by Bryan Stevenson, jump to about 55:30 in this episode of the Stay Tuned podcast. Bryan Stevenson is a death penalty attorney who founded the Equal Justice Initiative. He is the author of the book Just Mercy (also being made into a movie). Kelly highly recommends listening to this short discussion on hope.

During WW2, C.S. Lewis did a series of radio lectures on the subject of Christianity. These lectures were later published in a book: Mere Christianity. In his lecture on hope, Lewis reminded his audience that hope is not “a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but one of the things a Christian is meant to do.” He continued: “It (i.e., hope) does not mean that we are to leave the present world as it is. If you read history you will find that the Christians who did the most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next.” He finished his point with these now famous lines: “It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in’: aim at earth and you’ll get neither.” – C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, (118, Hope) To paraphrase Lewis, “Lay up treasures in heaven and you’ll get treasures on earth ‘thrown in’: lay up treasures on earth and you’ll get neither.”
