Todo comenzó bien, así como comienza la mayoría de los matrimonios. Había ternura, había afecto y, más que nada, había amor. Sin embargo, pasada la luna de miel, el matrimonio comenzó a andar mal. En medio de dos que se amaban, se interpusieron los celos, que destruyen todo lo que tocan. Un día Francisco Contreras, de Monterrey, México, no soportó el acoso de los celos y le pegó un tiro a su esposa, Sanjuana, en el temporal derecho. Acto seguido, se disparó él mismo en la sien. Ninguno de los dos murió, pero Sanjuana quedó con las facultades mentales alteradas, y Francisco perdió la vista en un ojo. Los celos habían triunfado. Si hay algo que los matrimonios deben rehuir, son los celos. Los celos consumen alma, corazón, mente y vida, y mientras los están consumiendo, conducen a la locura, terminando en tragedias como aquella. Hay celos que son naturales y saludables, y que provienen de un amor genuino. La Biblia dice que aun Dios es un Dios celoso que con diligencia vela por los suyos. Pero hay, también, celos morbosos, perjudiciales y enfermizos, producto de oscuros y bajos complejos. Esos son celos destructivos. ¿Cómo evitar que haya celos destructivos? Se comienza estableciendo un patrón de fidelidad incondicional entre esposos. El cónyuge debe saber, sin la más mínima duda, que su pareja, por nada en la vida, defraudaría los votos nupciales de amor y lealtad que los dos hicieron ante Dios. Luego, cada cónyuge debe desarrollar fe y confianza en Cristo. La fe profunda en Cristo nos libra de psicopatías enfermizas. Cuando ambos esposos son verdaderos seguidores de Cristo, no hay entre ellos ningún brote de malos celos. Añádase a esto el cultivo a fondo de la amistad matrimonial. Cuando el amor —el buen amor, el amor basado en un compromiso inquebrantable— se cultiva con sumo cuidado, los celos malignos no tienen ocasión de brotar. Porque al conservar el amor genuino, nos inmunizamos contra los celos destructivos. Dios, el diseñador del matrimonio, es también la fuente del amor. Cuando nuestro matrimonio y nuestra vida están en armonía con Dios, estamos también en armonía con nuestro cónyuge, y los celos no tienen dónde aflorar. Con Cristo en el matrimonio, no hay lugar para celos enfermizos. Sólo hay lugar para un amor cálido, puro, tierno y cristiano. Sea Cristo, desde hoy, el Señor de nuestro matrimonio. Dr. Francisco Contreras serves as director, president and chairman of the Oasis of Hope Hospital.
