After months of rumors and speculation, Sen. Michael Bennet announced on Friday that he is officially running for governor — but he also wants to stay in the Senate while he campaigns so he could appoint his own successor if he wins. So host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are talking about the campaign announcement that's got local Dems abuzz — plus, we share a follow-up on the turmoil at Illegal Pete's and respond to even more of your takes on Denver's dog poop problem. Paul mentioned the Denver Post editorial about Michael Bennet's succession plan and Axios Denver's report on local opinions on Democrats. For more on Bennet, we talked to historian Phil Goodstein about Bennet's biography ahead of his most recent re-election to the Senate. Bennet himself was previously on the podcast talking about his effort to ban TikTok. Bree mentioned her piece on the dog poop problem for Westword way back in 2016. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) spoke to a massive crowd when their “fight oligarchy” tour stopped in Civic Center Park on Friday. Sanders claims it was the “largest rally” he's ever had, but just how many folks were there? Host Bree Davies and Producer Paul Karolyi were at the park and dug into all the conflicting claims. Then we open up the City Cast Denver mailbag for some burning hot takes, including a spicy one from a Denver representative who is co-sponsoring the tipped minimum wage bill and a passionate defense of Illegal Pete's CEO Pete Turner. Rep. Alex Valdez was responding to comments that Councilperson Sarah Parady made on our show last week. Don't miss our interview with Pete Turner if you haven't heard it yet! The band Paul struggled to pronounce is named Xiuhtezcatl. Here's the New York Times article he mentioned about the controversy around the name “Illegal Pete's.” Did you go to the rally? For almost 30 years, Illegal Pete's has been a local darling. While Chipotle went global, Pete's Mission-style burritos came with killer queso and great margs — and they supported local artists and community groups, too. But over the last couple years, something has changed. People are swapping stories of food poisonings, cuts to worker benefits, and less-than-awesome queso. So what happened? Producer Paul Karolyi put that big question to Illegal Pete's founder and CEO Pete Turner, because he's got some explaining to do. Paul mentioned Denver Gazette's reporting on the letter that Turner and some other downtown restaurant owners sent to Mayor Mike Johnston complaining about how slow downtown's economic recovery has been. He also recommends this fun queso taste test that Westword's food editor and friend of the show Molly Martin did a few months ago. What do you think about Illegal Pete's? Do you love it more than ever? Have you had bad experiences? Are the baristas at Thump really rude, or is there more going on with Denver's coffee scene than we realized? Our episode on the best (and worst) coffee shops in the city really struck a nerve with our listeners, and today on the show we're sharing some of those responses, as well as other questions and comments you all had on Denver's recent bout of “tipping fatigue” and Denver's role in the West's water crisis. The City Cast Denver crew is back at the table with a new local food challenge and this time, we're taking on sandwiches. While the Mile High is overflowing with great grinders, subs, hoagies, and tortas, today's showdown is all about two out-of-town chains that Denverites have embraced as our own: Cheba Hut vs. Snarf's Sandwiches. Which tasty sub will reign supreme? Host Bree Davies is joined by newsletter editor Peyton Garcia, plus producers Paul Karolyi and Erin O'Toole for a great debate over who puts the best meat and cheese (or guacamole and cream cheese???) between two perfectly toasted pieces of bread. Looking for more City Cast Denver food battles? We've also taken on the best burger, enjoyed the local delicacy of breakfast burritos, taste-tested fried chicken, indulged in Denver's most decadent donuts, and compared Illegal Pete's and Chipotle! Peyton mentioned a story she wrote on Quizno's earlier this year: https://denver.citycast.fm/2022/03/07/the-rise-and-fall-of-a-denver-sandwich-empire/ Paul quoted from this Celebstoner.com interview with Cheba Hut founder Scott Jennings: https://www.celebstoner.com/news/celebstoner-news/2021/03/04/cheba-hut-founder-scott-jennings-interview/ And finally: some Casa Bonita news!!!! Way back in the early '90s, the Denver-style-Mission-style burrito rolled into town thanks to Chipotle. They introduced a massive meal you could eat with two hands — a steamed tortilla chock-full of rice, beans, meat, and all sorts of toppings. Illegal Pete's appeared just a few years later in Boulder with a similar style burrito, but a restaurant environment all its own. Today on the show, the City Cast Denver crew gets together to talk about these burrito behemoths and tries to decide who makes the best Denver-style-Mission-style meal in the Mile High City. Welcome back to Fridays at City Cast Denver where the crew chats about the news of the week and shares their perspectives. Today, host Bree Davies, producers Paul Karolyi and Xandra McMahon, and newsletter writer Peyton Garcia hash out the New York Times' picks for “the most vibrant and delicious” restaurants in the country. Spoiler alert: restaurants in Denver and Boulder made the cut. Plus, Xandra hit a silver mine when she found a Denver trivia game from the '80s at a yard sale for a buck. She'll be testing the team's true knowledge of the Mile High City and you can play along! (This has nothing to do with the New York Times' list but…) do you have strong feelings about Chipotle or Illegal Pete's? Leave us a voicemail: 720-500-5418. Have more Peyton in your life! Your next storyteller is Lucy Roucis. We are heartbroken to say that Lucy passed away this week, after a decades-long battle with Parkinson's disease. Lucy might be best known by a broader audience for her appearance in Love & Other Drugs, but in Denver she's been a force on and off stage for years, a wickedly funny and talented actor and comedian who will be deeply missed. Lucy told a couple of stories at The Narrators, but today we're sharing her first—this story was recorded at Buntport Theater in November 2017; the theme of the night was "Under Your Skin." A special thanks to all of our sponsors—Buntport Theater Company, Illegal Pete's, From the Hip Photo, and Great Divide Brewing Company. “It always seemed disingenuous to me for companies to talk about how well the animals for the food source are treated when their employees have to work two or three jobs.” Pete Turner, Founder and President, Illegal Pete’sI used to think that Illegal Pete’s competed with Chipotle and Qdoba. The more I explored Illegal Pete’s, the more it’s clear that Illegal Pete’s is in its own category – great food, sure. Full bar where people really want to hang out? That’s unusual. Voluntarily paying a living wage at a quick serve restaurant – wow, that’s almost unheard of. Pete talks about how and why he made these decisions. You’ll leave the episode a fan of Illegal Pete’s!

The Heartland guys sit down with MMA legend Chris "Lights Out" Lytle and give their "Donkey of the Week," take listener questions, play "Fact or Fiction," and share how they would "Change the World." How does the punctuation look on this, Nick? You rat bastard.
Velocity with Ryan Estes "We don’t just like music, we love it. That’s why each Illegal Pete’s is also a venue for live music performances. It’s why we feed touring bands through our Starving Artists program. It’s also why we started our own record label featuring artists like Esmé Patterson, Ark Life, Adam Cayton-Holland, and more."
When starting this podcast, I created a list. The list was of potential guests and Virgil was at the top of it. Virgil Dickerson is the definitive "local music guy". From fanzines to labels to talent buying to collectives, Virgil has had his touch on the Denver music scene since the early 90's. The ultimate enthusiast, Virgil is the guy who everybody wants to know and who is happy to know everybody. I sat with him to talk about his early days starting a fanzine (that would ultimately turn into a label and distribution center, Suburban Home), to working with Illegal Pete's and getting in on the ground floor of Denver's emerging comedy scene. Virgil and Illegal Pete's are celebrating their 20th anniversary with an amazing show at the historic Red Rocks Amplitheater! With Lucero, Built To Spill, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats and Adam Cayton-Holland, this will be one for the books. You can (and should) purchase tickets for this amazing celebration here: illegalpetes.com/20thanniversary
Greater Than Collective record mogul, former Suburban Home Records guru, and Illegal Pete's all-around good guy Virgil Dickerson gets the Dining Room Table treatment to talk poop stories, learning from your failures and how dim sum hasn't been taken over by hipsters. Yet.
It's storytime with SCOOTER JAMES! Jimmy Pinhead himself sits down with Damian on the freezing cold patio at Illegal Pete's in Denver to drink several pitchers of Coors Lite while chatting about the upcoming Pinhead Circus reunion shows with the NOBODYS! I sit down with Illegal Pete's impressario Pete Turner to talk about how a struggling, hole-in-the-wall Mission-style burrito joint in Boulder turned into a Colorado empire. While never losing it's sense of cool. We also talk Steinbeck, Van Morrison phoning it in at Red Rocks and fatherhood.
This week's interview is with THE SHELL CORPORATION! We talk with Jan Drees and Curtiss Lopez outside Illegal Pete's in Denver, Colorado. We chat with the guys about their early musical memories, how they got into punk rock, why they play and other musical origins. We also talk their love of Bad Religon & Propagandhi, Mandrake, angry lyrics, tour life and oh so much more in today's audio adventure!

On this week’s podcast, Pete Turner of Illegal Pete’s joins us to talk bands, Boulder and bullet trains. And yes, burritos too, because alliteration is fun. We force Pete to dig up repressed memories of Blinky the Clown, the local television icon who passed away this week at the age of 91. Ron questions the […] 93: For Pete’s Sake EditionDenver Diatribe
