Elizabeth (Betty) Heid is the past chair of the Board of Directors of the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame, serving on the board for 6 years: 5 years as Chair, one year as past chair. While serving as Chair of the Board, she recognized a need to broadly tell the life stories of the women who were inducted into the Hall. She was inspired to design and create the “Great Colorado Women” film series. Serving as Executive Producer since implementation in 2016, she has produced 33 films to date. All as a volunteer. The film series focuses on historic and contemporary Colorado women and their little known, underreported achievements. This multi-season series honors the more than 200 trailblazing women who have been inducted into the Hall since its founding in 1985. These stories provide role models to remind women and girls that they too can aspire higher to reach their dreams and to educate men and boys about women's accomplishments. The result of this series is the creation of a comprehensive historical archive of the rich legacy of great Colorado women and will be a major step toward women being appropriately represented in Colorado history. This series, now in its seventh season, is really an eye-opener to the accomplishments and the impacts Colorado women have had on our state, our country, and our world. The films produced each year air on Rocky Mountain PBS. These films have earned 4 Heartland EMMY awards, while receiving 15 Heartland EMMY nominations. One film also won the Los Angeles Film festival for “Inspiring Woman in a Film.” The films have been viewed worldwide, reaching an audience of well over one million viewers.Betty's professional experience includes: owner, founder and CEO of two multi-million dollar businesses: a consulting agency and a job placement agency. Alice McKennis, born and raised in western Colorado, embraced a childhood filled with skiing and horseback riding. Her passion for skiing led her to the U.S. Ski Team, where she excelled on the World Cup circuit and earned a spot in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Despite a setback from a knee injury in 2011, Alice persevered, achieving a career highlight with a World Cup Downhill win in 2013. However, tragedy struck in Germany, causing a severe knee injury that jeopardized her future in ski racing. Although she aimed for the 2014 Winter Olympics, recovery proved challenging. Alice returned to competition in 2015, securing a national title and showcasing her resilience. In the 2018 season, Alice continued to shine, finishing fifth in the Olympic Downhill and earning third in the World Cup Downhill in Sweden. Unfortunately, a coaching accident in 2018 led to a prolonged recovery, with five surgeries keeping her off the slopes for 11 months. Alice returned to competition in 2020, maintaining her momentum until a knee and ankle injury in 2021 forced her to reconsider her career. In the spring of 2021, she made the tough decision to retire from ski racing. Post-retirement, Alice has embraced coaching at Ski and Snowboard Club Vail and works as an Athlete Gift Officer for the US Ski & Snowboard team, contributing to fundraising and supporting fellow athletes.

Unions are all the rage this summer. It's looking like the busiest summer of labor action since 2000, with 323,000 workers already having gone on strike, according to the Denver Post. But it's not just grocery store clerks and Hollywood writers, the solidarity is spreading to nontraditional labor hotspots, like homeless shelters and The Mercury Cafe. With The Merc's employees set to vote on their union next week, host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are joined by returning fave Joshua Emerson to talk about the iconic Five Points restaurant and venue and it's role at the center of the latest labor fight. Joshua is hosting his comedy showcase “Colorado Native” at the Holiday Theater on Aug. 24. You can get tickets here. Paul talked about the amusement park Aurora could have had back in the late '70s, Roger Zelazny's classic sci-fi novel “Lord of Light,” and the Colorado Sun report on HOAs. Joshua mentioned secretive judges. Bree talked about Jason Perry, the DJ who was killed outside Dandy Dan's recently. Isn't it funny how many times we plan our future or think we have it all figured out when something happens and interrupts the way we thought things would go? I don't know about you, but there have been SO MANY times in my life where my plans didn't go as I thought they would have, but I've learned rather than throw in the towel or giving into a spirit of defeat if I would just readjust my exceptions and fully surrender the process to what God was doing, often times things would work out better than I had ever imagined. Married to her best friend with a beautiful toddler, Tanisha has been in the Fitness industry as an Instructor and Wellness Coach for 6 years. She's currently an instructor for RowHouse and loves any chance she has to be outdoors exploring. She's a Colorado Native, passionate about being a light and pointing others to Jesus. This fun loving amazing instructor, with a great taste in music, is full of insight and wisdom for anyone in transition and has such a deep dependency on God, its just evident through the joy that she exudes and the conversations she has how much she loves God. Erin Michalski joins Yo today to remind us of the role American Ranchers play to feed the world safe beef. Erin's story is inspirational - she left her career in investment banking and living the good life in Connecticut to join the family business, ranching in Colorado at the Eagle Rock Ranch. A life she has embraced with joy and grace. This quote sums up Erin: “She Rides the Ranch so Wild and Free, A Cowgirl She Will Forever Be.” Here are some of the questions we explored: · How did you come to ranching? · How did you find you positioning in the direct-to-consumer business? · How is it working in a male-dominated industry? · What have you learned about teamwork? · What do you think about finding your purpose in life? Erin is definitely a “Girl, Taking the Lead!”: She began a direct to consumer effort with the focus we can have 100% confidence that the beef you are purchasing came from an animal that was raised with the highest humane standards in the industry. This is her TOP priority! Her cattle graze on 1,000s of acres at 9,000 feet, eating protein rich timothy grass, drinking mountain run-off water, and breathing pristine clean air. Plus her beef is pasture raised and grain finished. After harvest, her beef is dry aged for 21 days. The combination creates perfectly marbled beef with tremendous flavoring. No wonder her beef tastes so good!! Gotta say: I'm one satisfied happy customer! I am a Colorado Native that loves camping, hiking, and enjoying our beautiful Rocky Mountains. I grew up playing soccer, track and field, fencing, tae-kwon-do, racquetball, and snowboarding. I was always doing something active or creative. If I was not playing a sport, I was practicing my artistic skills drawing and painting. I still have many of my drawings from when I was 10 years old until college. It's amazing to see how you evolve and grow over the years looking back.Nowadays I like to spend my free time with my boys and wife playing VR games, camping, hiking, or reading a good book. I really have a blast when we have time to throw on a classic John Wayne or Abbot and Costello movie and play a nice long board game too.My background is in Graphic Design and Digital Imaging. I took my love for art all the way through college and got my Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts. Going through college in the age where computer graphics were just starting was remarkably interesting. Studying new programs and technologies that were just getting started like Photoshop was absolutely fascinating. Looking at the technology we have now is impressive and I am envious of what kids today have at their fingertips.Making the switch to insurance might be strange to some after having such a creative background. However, I love it! The challenge and importance of finding the appropriate insurance coverage for people is exciting. Being able to make sure somebody is properly insured is important to me. Having three boys myself, I understand the importance of having the appropriate insurance coverages for families too. As an insurance agent, my goal is to make sure each person I talk to is suitably covered while being attentive to their budgets, treating each and every person as if they were part of my own family.Learn More: https://trailstoneinsurancegroup.com/Influential Entrepreneurs with Mike Saundershttps://businessinnovatorsradio.com/influential-entrepreneurs-with-mike-saunders/Source: https://businessinnovatorsradio.com/interview-with-ken-abel-discussing-the-core-values-working-with-trailstone-insurance-group

I like to refer to myself as a Colorado Native, but technically I am not. I was born in the Midwest and relocated to the Denver Metro Area shortly thereafter. I am grateful for the family decision to move west, especially because this is where I met my wife, Kelsey. Colorado has a lot to offer and it was truly a blessing to grow up on the Front Range. The move to Colorado led to many great life experiences.I obtained my Bachelors degree at the University of Colorado Denver where I studied Risk Management and Insurance. The opportunity in the aging industry is what led me to the decision for my academic studies. From there, I found an opportunity for a Claims Handling position with a national insurance carrier here in Denver. From auto to property to business claims, I am versed in the intricacies of what can be seen as a complex process. I am passionate about helping my clients protect their assets through insurance and helping them navigate any hurdles that may arise.Learn More: https://www.trailstoneinsurancegroup.com/michael-wright/Cell: 720-441-0488Influential Influencers with Mike Saundershttps://businessinnovatorsradio.com/influential-entrepreneurs-with-mike-saunders/Source: https://businessinnovatorsradio.com/interview-with-michael-wright-with-trailstone-insurance-group-what-to-expect-from-your-independent-agent-when-making-claims

In this episode, Lisa and Julianne take a quick break from the series, Conversations with the EQUUS Herd, to speak with Gretchen Lida, contributing writer for Horse Network. Gretchen is an essayist and an equestrian, with work appearing in The Washington Post, Brevity, The Rumpus, The Washington Independent Review of Books, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Plaid Horse Magazine, Horse Nation and many others. She teaches composition in Illinois, lives in Wisconsin, sometimes lives on Nantucket Island and is still a Colorado Native.Gretchen brings a sense of normalcy for "horse people" in this time of uncertainty through her series of articles for Horse Network. From articles on the "less than half-truths" behind the familiar t-shirt saying, "My Horse is My Therapist" to the joys of riding an opinionated mare, her writing draws the reader into a world where being a horse girl and knowing a horse girl is something to be proud of. As she states regarding the benefits of the positive side of the stereotypes involved, "Power. Or, better yet, empowerment. So, to those who quake at the thought of a horse girl, I say, “Good. Be scared.” That’s right. Beware the horse girl. The word beware comes from an old English term that referred to prudence, being wary, or a sense of vigilance. It meant to watch carefully, and with caution. And it is true horse girls are a thing to watch, a thing to be careful of, and a thing to fill you with awe.We Horse Girls are fierce."In this Zoom call, the conversation between Gretchen, Lisa and Julianne includes flashbacks to the EQUUS Film Festival in December, favorite films from the fest, reviews of some of the films on The EQUUS Channel, and personal stories of favorite "horsey memories." They also stray into the current hot topic of how to cope with isolation during the pandemic. In a personal essay for Horse Network, Gretchen sums it up. “Still, the need for quiet and ceremony is deeply human. For me, that need for ritual and contemplation is fulfilled in another building. One that smells more like timothy than incense and that requires a different brand of footwear finery. I am a member of the church of Equus.”To find more about Gretchen Lida, visit https://gretchenlida.com.Twitter: @GC_LidaTo learn more about podcast host Julianne and her partner Bruce Anderson, tune in to "Whinny Tales: Horse Stories, Pony Legends and Unicorn Yarns," the official podcast of Nature's View and The Marley Project, their equine and arts-based 501 (c)(3).
