In December 1823, US president James Monroe delivered his State of the Union address in which he coined what would become known as the Monroe Doctrine. It was a framework that would later be used to legitimize US intervention up and down the hemisphere. But in those early days, Monroe's statements were applauded by Latin American leaders as supporting their independence struggles. They were even embraced at Simon Bolivar's Panama Congress of 1826.In this episode, host Michael Fox travels to see what's left of the former site of the Panama Congress, and then dives in to the past and present with Yale historian Greg Grandin. They look at Simon Bolivar's Panama Congress, but also Monroe and the legacy of US imperialism in the region until today, including US-backed death squads, the Iran Contra Scandal, Manifest Destiny, and so much more.Under the Shadow is an investigative narrative podcast series that walks back in time, telling the story of the past by visiting momentous places in the present. James Keys and Tunde Ogunlana take a look back at the Iran Contra scandal, which despite not seeming to have the notoriety of Watergate or the sizzle of Clinton-Lewinsky, was a pretty big deal and one that illustrated both how the U.S. governmental system can be exploited and the mechanisms in the system that allows it to fight back when lines are crossed (01:13).The Iran-Contra Affair (PBS)Iran-Contra Explained: The Wall of Crazy Scandal (YouTube)

Born in Cuba, Prado and his family were caught in the midst of the Castro Revolution, and fledtheir war-torn home for a better life in the U.S. Fifty years after that daring escape, he retiredfrom the CIA as the agency's equivalent of a Two-Star General. During his two-and-a-halfdecade career, he was one of the agency's best and most dedicated Black Ops specialists.Early in his career he served as a paramilitary officer in the agency's elite Special ActivitiesGroup, where he fought alongside the Contras in the U.S.'s clandestine war against Nicaragua'sSandinistas. Through his heroism and dedicated service there, he was awarded the CIA'sIntelligence Medal of Merit. As soon as he returned stateside, however, he faced the politicalfiring squad of the Iran-Contra Scandal. His career took him around the globe in duty stations in Central and South America as well asthe Philippines. Following those posts, Prado joined the highest echelons of the CIAheadquarters in Langley, VA. Toward the end of 1995, Prado was appointed Deputy Chief ofStation and co-founding member of the Bin Laden Task Force, followed by three years as headof Korean Operations. It was at that point that he took on one of the most dangerous missions ofhis career, re-establishing a once-abandoned CIA station inside a hostile nation long sinceconsidered a front line of the fight against Islamic terrorism. Prado carried out covert operationsand developed assets that proved pivotal in the coming War on Terror. As Chief of Operationsfor the CIA's Counterterrorist Center, he was one of the architects of the agency's covert war todestroy Al Qaeda in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

In the 11 years since its founding, WeWork has had a wild ride. At its core, it's a real estate company that subleases trendy office spaces to other businesses. But the workers at the company, lead by their charismatic CEO Adam Neumann and intoxicated by a $47 billion valuation, partied like it was a rebellious tech startup. Behind all the kombucha taps in WeWork's offices was a culture of extravagant splurging, furious hedonism, and questionable business decisions. The bad behavior persisted for a decade before it all came crashing down. This week on Gadget Lab, we talk with Eliot Brown and Maureen Farrell, the Wall Street Journal reporters who helped reveal the absurd shenanigans that led to the downfall of WeWork. Their new book, The Cult of We: WeWork, Adam Neumann, and the Great Startup Delusion, is a chronicle of the company's rollicking journey. Show Notes: The Cult of We comes out July 20. You can preorder it here. And be sure to follow all of Eliot and Maureen's reporting at The Wall Street Journal. Recommendations: Maureen recommends the show Schitt's Creek. Eliot recommends the podcast Fiasco, specifically season two, which is about the Iran Contra Scandal. Lauren recommends the Listings Project, a community newsletter for people looking for temporary housing. Mike recommends Mixcloud for discovering new music through DJ sets. Join me for a brief history of cocaine, an overview of the biopharmacology, and roadmap for how to undo the damage done by the war on drugs. Crack cocaine is just cocaine. The only difference is it can be smoked, which means it kicks in harder and wears off faster. And because of that, it can also be sold in small doses. These differences, which aren't differences, have been used to defend a racist war on drugs. More than 80% of Reagan-era crack sentences were given to black men, even though black folks don't use or sell drugs at rates any higher than white folks. In this episode I cover the history of crack in the United States from the late 1970s up to the present, including Richard Pryor's accident, Len Bias's (alleged) overdose, Freeway Ricky Ross, the Iran-Contra Scandal, Oliver North, the Rampart Scandal, and stereotypes about crack.
In the last years of Jimmy Carter's presidency, the ruthless Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua was overthrown by the Sandinista revolutionaries, a coalition of the moderate and revolutionary left. The incoming Reagan administration in 1981 immediately froze aid to the Nicaragua and began to arm the anti Sandinista rebels, the Contras. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The boys think it's time for another history-oriented episode, and this time they're trying to decide who is worse between two relatively obscure dictators. Manuel Noriega or Augusto Pinochet? Ben takes the side of Chile's Pinochet, while Ryan argues for Panama's Noriega, both highlighting the atrocities that these two have dealt out over the years. Nick, as this week's judge, tries to determine the worse of the two. Discussion points include: Kevin Smith's "Jersey Girl," "accidental" plane crashes, exiles, drug smuggling, crony capitalism, secret police, state-sponsored terrorism, The CIA, the Panama Canal, the Iran Contra Scandal, and free helicopter rides.
President Reagan stunned reporters — and the world — at a press briefing weeks after a Lebanese magazine reported the U.S. had sold weapons to Iran. Guest hosted by Molly Brandenburg of Unexplained Mysteries, a Spotify Original from Parcast.
Trump and Nixon: Two self-labelled 'law-and-order' presidents - who both were/are crooks. And publicly denied/deny it. Throw in Ronald Reagan, our third modern-day law-and-order president, with his Iran-Contra Scandal and the cocaine smuggling along with guns and money and our supposed enemy in the Ayatollah Khomeini reign of the 1980s, the country of Iran. All three presidents acted as if they were above the law. Trump and Nixon actually had a correspondence going on pre-social media, with handwritten letters. Many of these are being preserved in the Richard Nixon Library. The letter exchange continued for about ten years in the 1980s into early 1994, when Nixon died in April. They shared a distrust of the media, a desire to maximize TV ratings, the idea of using people as 'props,' etc.* John Dean, a central figure in revealing the depth and deceit of the Watergate election scandal of 1972 and thereafter, was Nixon's White House counselor. He thinks these cronies were 'two authoritarian personalities who would have a natural affinity for each other."** If you look a little deeper, Trump wanted to convince Nixon to move into his Trump Tower building (TT) on Fifth Avenue. To make it look more attractive to other wealthy possible patrons. Nixon was living in NYC at the time, about four miles away from TT. Nixon never did make the move, as his wife Pat had a stroke during the time Trump was working on him to do so. Trump did not attend Nixon's funeral. Deep Throat was Bernstein and Woodward's secret Watergate contact during that scandal. They would meet under cover of night or the concrete in underground parking garages at 2 in the morning. * and ** 'Trump-Nixon Letters Highlight Unique Relationship' Sept 23, 2020 News/Elections Aljazeera

Few big budget studio films since the 1970s exemplify the trichotomy of Luis Puenzo's 1989 historical drama / romance adventure / political treatise masquerading as pulp OLD GRINGO. The eagerly anticipated adaptation of Carlos Fuentes' lauded 1985 novel “Gringo Viejo” (which took him 20 years off and on to complete), and from the director of the equally acclaimed 1985 Oscar winning film THE OFFICIAL STORY starred Jane Fonda, Gregory Peck and Jimmy Smits in a three-person-point of view narrative which brought together an American school teacher, a General in the Army of Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution, and aging legendary journalist / novelist Ambrose Bierce (a fictional version of him anyway) in the final days of his life … . The film took a long and winding road to the screen, premiered out of competition at the Cannes film festival - where it was booed, suffered a delayed then incomplete release in the U.S., and ended up as one of the most critically lambasted box office disappointments of the year. But then again so did other films which have since gone on to become essential cinema - among them John Frankenheimer's SECONDS (also booed at Cannes), David Lean's DOCTOR ZHIVAGO - a huge critical piñata when it first opened, and others from FANTASIA and BRINGING UP BABY to BLADE RUNNER and THE THING - all of which were not box office / audience hits upon their initial releases, but which grew in popularity over the years. Does OLD GRINGO deserve such a place in cinema history? We don't know. But we've always felt it was treated incredibly unfair by critics of the day who failed to notice what was really going on below the surface - among the many subtextual themes it's analogy to the Iran-Contra Scandal of the day and more. We also believe that, like SECONDS, BLADE RUNNER et all, it will eventually find it's audience appreciative of it‘s multi-layered cinematic brilliance and bravado, ... which is kind of why we're here in general. ;) ______________________________________________________________________________THE MOVIE SNEAK PODCAST is part of The GullCottage/Sandlot - a film blog, cinema magazine, growing reference library and online network "Celebrating The Art of Cinema, ... On this episode JD, Uncle Steve and Pauly Fentanyl speak with the legend himself James "Smokey" West. West speaks to us about growing up tough, **joining the army and becoming a martial arts Instructor for CAG operators**. Smokey also speaks on training and arming rebels in the Iran-Contra Scandal and his martial art skills which took him to amazing places and exposed him to well known names of which he's personally trained with. Needless to say this episode is turned up to the max, Smokey don't mess around. **SOF Bad Monkey mis-wrote that Jim West was an original CAG member...that is our bust..Jim had nothing to do with the drafting of the description, nor did he mention in the interview that he was an original CAG member....those of you who are trolling him using this typo as ammunition, I must remind you HE WILL KICK YOUR ASS!....- aint nothing phony about this OG.
Peter Kornbluh has spent his life working to shed light on US covert operations abroad. Along with his colleagues at the National Security Archive, Peter has helped to declassify documents related to the Bay of Pigs (1961) and Cuban Missile Crisis (1962), the coup against Chile's democratically elected government (1973) and the Iran-Contra Scandal (1980s). As it turns out, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operatives and many prominent politicians have a lot to hide. In this episode, Bob and Ben speak with Peter Kornbluh about the National Security Archive and how he and others have used the Freedom of Information Act to ensure that citizens have access to information about their government. Peter also explains the impact that these documents have had on modern politics at home and abroad, the difference between his work and that of Edward Snowden and Julian Assange (Wikileaks), and why he believes that access to government documents is essential to a strong democracy. He also shares one of the greatest “how I got here” stories we've ever heard on The Road to Now! Peter Kornbluh has worked at the Archive since April 1986. He currently directs the Archive's Cuba and Chile Documentation Projects. He was co-director of the Iran-Contra documentation project and director of the Archive's project on U.S. policy toward Nicaragua. He is the author of multiple books, the most recent of which, Back Channel to Cuba: The Hidden History of Negotiations between Washington and Havana (w/ William M. Connor and Jack talk about Carolyn Forche's elegy "Because One Is Always Forgotten" digging into the troubled history of the United States' involvement in South and Central America -- many times being on the wrong side of (and in some cases starting) brutal conflicts. This episode comes out the same week that Oliver North, the man indicted in the Iran-Contra Scandal, was named president of the NRA: proof that this 30+ year old poem's themes of remembrance and resistance are eerily relevant. I could take my heart, he said, and give it to a campesino and he would cut it up and give it back: You can’t eat heart in those four dark chambers where a man can be kept years. A boy soldier in the bone-hot sun works his knife to peel the face from a dead man and hang it from the branch of a tree flowering with such faces. The heart is the toughest part of the body.
