Order James Beasley's book "DEEP ROOTED" here: https://jamesbeasleyent.com James Beasley, Jr. describes himself as a third generation criminal, whose notorious family roots in Bayview-Hunters Point go back to the early days of Black migration to San Francisco. His father, great uncles and cousins built their reputation through labor racketeering, heroin dealing, and pimping, but James took advantage of the cocaine boom in the 70s and 80s. He soon became the drug kingpin of San Francisco, associating with Darryl "Lil D" Reed in Oakland and players like Big Dave and Harry-O in Los Angeles. After making millions of dollars, his run came to an end when he became the youngest person charged with tax evasion in United States history and ended up doing 27 years in federal prison. Now that he has been released and transitioned into legitimate business, James is here to tell his story as a cautionary tale to guide other black and brown youth away from the life of crime. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introduction 03:06 Crime families in San Francisco 06:22 Bayview-Hunters Point in the 60s-70s 11:02 Getting in trouble in high school 16:04 Following his dad into the dope game 24:59 C*caine hits the hood 28:26 Competing with the A Team 31:56 Gangster mentality in the family 37:18 Starting the B Team 42:02 Lil D 46:33 Crips & Bloods in the Bay? 50:39 Cars as a status symbol 54:44 Colombian connection 59:39 Felix Mitchell 1:00:43 Shrimp Boy & Chinatown connection 1:04:55 Ron Newt & Michael Jackson 1:07:55 Investing in legal businesses 1:11:08 Tax evasion case 1:16:07 Federal prison 1:20:37 Turf violence in Hunters Point 1:25:09 Advice to the youth 1:33:22 Harry-O and Death Row 1:41:23 Freeway Rick Ross

Freeway Rick Ross was born in TX and moved to South Central LA when he was a young boy. He faced a lot of opposition growing up in the early gang culture of LA and what that came with. Rick and his crew were eventually doing anywhere from a couple 100k - 1,000,000 a day in sales. Until, one day Rick was setup by one of his plugs and the Feds finally got him. The judge gave him Life and Rick later appealed his charges and got out some years later to restart his life. Hear the story of a reformed hustler who is now in the legal cannabis game and making a new life and name for himself. This is one true “Only in America” type of a story! Y'all know what time it is…. "To err is human"That should have been President Reagan's opening line while addressing the country after Iran-Contra came to light. Instead it was a lot of half apologies and half truths.  After repeated congressional amendments to stop the White House from funding the rebel Contra group trying to take power in Nicaragua, and negotiating the release of U.S. prisoners with back alley arms deals, the operation needed to be pulled together in secret. Reagan pulled out his moral compass which pointed to the North, Oliver North to be exact. Ollie facilitated the extra cash from the arms deal to fund the Contras. It all worked until a magazine article, and a plane crash tanked the whole operation. Listen in to hear how it all came crashing down.

Chico Brown and Melvin Farmer both grew up during the tumultuous times of the 70's and 80's and speak directly to the history and experiences of Black people in Compton and Los Angeles during these times. The conversation touches on the Blaxploitation era of films and the impact this had on the way the Black community viewed themselves. The conversation also delves into the CIA sponsored crack/cocaine epidemic and how Chico, the defendant of Freeway Rick Ross, realized he was involved in a drug operation that exceeded way to the steps of the White House. The plan, revealed in an explosive series by Journalist Gary Webb, was to funnel drugs into inner city communities including South Central and Compton, and use these proceeds to fund U.S backed counter rebels in Nicaragua. On this episode of Slauson Girl Speaks, I have a very personal conversation with Freeway Rick Ross, who is a notorious South Central, L.A kingpin from the 80's/90's crack era. We talk about FX's hit series Snowfall, life in South Central, Los Angeles through the decades for African-Americans, his life growing up and what led him to becoming a drug dealer. Although he has done countless interviews on his life and court cases, this conversation is a little different. The former crack dealer speaks with a "crack baby" about the impacts of the crack era on the inner city community of South Central.

From the mid 1980's to the early 1990's, the United States of America was ravaged by the violence and destruction associated with the crack cocaine trade and epidemic. But more than anyone, inner-city African American communities felt the pain, setting the stage for mass incarceration and the social conflicts that rest in the background of our modern controversies over race and policing.
