Patrick Rieger emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, I feel like I have been slacking this summer sending you pictures after having sent so many. Celtic Pittsburgh hasn't been doing much the past few months though we do have plans in the works for an event in October. Meanwhile, the renaissance festival season for my family and I started when we attended the Great Lakes Medieval faire the weekend of July 27 and 28. It was a great weekend, and we needed time away from the daily routine. With life so busy for everyone we hardly see friends anymore, and this was a chance to see many of them. We were happy to find that our friend Captain John Stout, aka Richard Brentar, has returned to Great Lakes after having been absent for a few years. I'm not sure what I enjoy more, his music or his stories, he always has lots of great stories to tell. We also saw the Jackdaws, Celtic Mayhem, and Michael Manderen. Sadly we didn't make the shows of Menagerie Music this year but we did manage to catch up with Lisa from that duo. My family and I plus a couple of friends went to see John McCann and Hamish at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle in Pittsburgh on August 3. These two are a lot of fun and have great energy, and get the place jumping. I have seen them for 15 years, starting when they were part of the Corned Beef & Curry Band. Sadly that band broke up when one of the three decided to explore other musical paths. I'll be sending more pictures of Celtic musicians come September after trips to two more ren faires. Until then, slainte!" Cheryl Arvio emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, Sorry these photos aren't better, but this is Socks in the Frying Pan from Friday night's show at the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago. Brilliant, as they always are! Bummed that they are not playing Milwaukee Irish Fest this year, but happy we got to see them (and pick up their new CD) in our hometown. Best,"
Irish American Heritage Center (4626 N. Knox) celebrates Irish and Irish American culture through events, music, theater, literature, and language. It's truly one of the city's hidden treasures, which is why I'm thrilled to spotlight what they do in this episode. Home to Fifth Province Pub, Mayfair Theatre and plenty of meeting and event spaces, the Irish American Heritage Center is a wonderful place for community, culture and music. Bonus: It's in a giant, century-old, north side, school building, which makes it look and feel unique and very Chicago. Joining me for conversation over bangers & mash from Fifth Province Pub are Brian Esterline (Hospitality Manager) and Ki Wolf-Smith (Board of Directors). The Irish American Community lost a great leader and friend this past week. Tom Looney passed away at the age of 81. Tom grew up in the Irish village of Ballycashen in the town Kilnaboy in County Clare as the youngest of seven children. He immigrated to the United States on 1960, was drafted into the Army in 1962 and married his wife, Bridget "Breege" Looney in 1966 and they remained inseparable. Tom was the President of the Irish American Heritage Center and helped acquire, finance and refurbish the center through Irish tradesmen. The Bums have an acute case of Low-E during Episode 0039 (they can't all be gems); talk eventually turns to NFL Week 9 and the dumpster fire that was MNF (Bears vs. Stealers/refs), the silver lining of Justin Time's progression, AARon “The Liar and Douchebag” Rodgers is flayed in the rail yard for gross negligence, while Jordan “No” Love makes his NFL debut; the Las Vegas Raiders are running out of degenerate criminals (or are they?), Odell escapes Cleveland; Cam is back in Charlotte for his swan song; Paddy heads to Ann Arbor, MI for a field trip to the Big House (travelogue); before the first half closes with a goofy-ass ESPN story about a dude who finds 164 bowling balls buried under his front porch. The second half ensues with yet another beer review, this time at the hands of Chicago's Lake Effect Brewing Co. and a mash-up with the Irish-American Heritage Center, to create a rock-solid Red Ale named after IAHC's public house bar— “Fifth Providence” (4.8% ABV); the Bums throw low-energy and sadness at the devastating loss of life in Houston following Travis Scott's AstroWorld concert and the tragedy that followed; Episode 0039 mercifully comes to an end after talk turns to streaming TV series reviews of ShowTime's “American Rust” (starring Jeff Daniels & Maura Tierney) and HBO's “100 Foot Wave” (featuring big wave rider Garrett McNamara). Happy Armistice / Veterans Day! Hug a Vet!Recorded, November 11, 2021 at B.O.M. northwest headquarters ‘The Eagle's Nest' in Chicago, IL USA.

Trevor Rose-Hamblin (owner/head brewer, Old Irving Brewery and Fiona McEntee (owner, McEntee Law Group) are on the show for a so-crazy-it-just-might-work balance of immigration law information and beer talk. We recorded the show in advance of the Trotter Project Beer Fest kicking off on Sunday 8/11 at the Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 North Knox. Why did I pair brewery owner Trevor with immigration lawyer Fiona for this episode? I thought they'd have "terrific chemistry." The Trotter Project Beer Fest on Sunday 8/11 (Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 North Knox). The Fest launches Charlie Trotter Days on Sunday. Immigration law, especially as it pertains to touring musicians. We started our OIB courses with Fried Zucchini (Sicilian caper salsa verde, beer vinegar aioli, parmesan, lemon). The curbside service we got for the podcast has ruined me for all future recordings. (Also: Thanks, Matt!) The food at OIB is high end and next-level. How does Fiona feel about doing media: "I have a responsibility to try and use (my) voice to try and advocate for my clients." Fiona's next immigration-related endeavor: A children's book! Labor trafficking and sex trafficking: Which is more prevalent? "Taking your job home": The differences between Fiona and Trevor. We had the exceptional (and absolutely worth trying if you've never had anything like it) wood-fired Spanish octopus (crispy potatoes, Piquillo peppers, beer vinegar aioli, oregano, lemon, green olive salsa). The key to business travel: Exploring in your down time. We finished our tour of the menu with the OIB burger (8oz wood fired USDA Prime beef, white cheddar, caramelized onions, beer vinegar aioli, rosemary bun, plus fried egg and bacon!). Car Con Carne is presented by the Autobarn Mazda of Evanston
