Introduction Why are we looking at Rahab as part of this 'a new thing' series? She is the first non-Isrealite in the genealogy of Jesus: “and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse,” (Matthew 1:5 NRSV) It doesn't get much better than that! There are several 'unlikely' people in that list. There are several reasons she should not be in that list, but they are the same reason she is in the list. First, a review of what happens in Joshua 2 & 6 Joshua 2.1-24 Joshua 6.17 Joshua 6.22-25 1. She is a Gentile God's desire has always been for everyone to know him “I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”” (Genesis 12:3 NRSV) “And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant—these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” (Isaiah 56:6-7 NRSV) Jesus saw this as pertaining to his own day “and he said, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer'; but you have made it a den of robbers.”” (Luke 19:46 NRSV) Paul recognised the significance of the arrival of the Messiah “Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse shall come, the one who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles shall hope.”” (Romans 15:12 NRSV) Rahab prefigures the hope that all modern-day Gentiles have that, by faith, we are included in the people of God. 2. She is a woman Rahab as protector - In the Old Testament men are protectors; so are women. [[Abigail]] protects her husband and the men in her household from a violent death (1 Sam. 25). [[Rahab]] protects the male spies (Josh. 2). [[Esther]] protects her people, the Jews, from being massacred (Esth. 2:19 – 9:19). - She is one of two heroines in a window heading off danger: Rahab and Michal, societal opposites. “Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the outer side of the city wall and she resided within the wall itself.” (Joshua 2:15 NRSV) “So Michal let David down through the window; he fled away and escaped.” (1 Samuel 19:12 NRSV) Rahab as a woman of dignity 'We think of the courageous life of [[Sarah]] (Gen. 12–23), the faith of [[Rahab]] (Josh. 2), the commitment of [[Hannah]] (1 Sam. 1–2), the devotion of [[Ruth]] (Ruth 1–4), [[Abigail]]'s gentle but firm rebuke of David (1 Sam. 25), the humble faith of both the widow of Zarephath (1 Kgs. 17) and the Shunammite woman (2 Kgs. 4), and the risk-taking faith of [[Esther]] (Esth. 1–10).' Blomberg, Craig . Two Views on Women in Ministry (Counterpoints: Bible and Theology) (p. 272). Zondervan Academic. Jesus treats women with dignity - “She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying.” (Luke 10:39 NRSV) - Rahab prefigures the promise of the Spirit that all are equal before God (Acts 2:17-18 NRSV) 3. She has a questionable profession Rahab as host - Hosts the undesirable? - Hosts spies, people of God, beachhead of kingdom, 'temple' - Place of faith and salvation - Like Jesus in reverse - hosting those who make her life more complicated (Mark 2:15-17 NRSV) Conclusion What does Rahab learn? God cares about the Gentiles (those far from God) God keeps his promises (salvation) God is powerful (more so than any earthly power) God is full of grace (no matter what others think of her, or she thinks of herself) What do we learn? The importance of honouring the marginalised - if God does it, and Jesus, so should we. He wants them in his family. Not to look down on 'sinners', but to seek to show them the love of God. No human barrier can stop anyone from becoming a God-follower. To have vision for those (apparently) furthest from God New Thing point Her decision to have faith in God took her and her family on a new counter-cultural journey into uncharted territory. 'It must have been an interesting period for Rahab's extended family, all squashed into her house, like a mini-ark, on the edge of a terrorised city, waiting for the unknown.' Joshua chapters 2-6 mark a significant moment in Israelite history. They cross theJordan river into the promised land, and begin to take ownership of it. Some of the heroes along the way are the ones the readers would expect and others are some of the least likely characters in all of the Bible. Rahab, through her brief in the God of the Isrealites, stands as a pillar of faith, not just in her time, but through Hebrews 11 for all time. God is always moving on your behalf, just as he was in Joshua, Rahab, and the Isrealite's day

In Exodus 32 the Israelite people demand that Aaron build for them a golden calf. It's a brazen act of disobedience, as the Isrealite people break the first and second commandments. Pastor Dennis Allan walks us through the story, placing it within the larger context of the book of Exodus, demonstrating that it's the Israelites' lack of relationship with God that leads them to demand an idol. For us today, a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus is the remedy to our idolatry.

(II King 5) Sometimes, your God-sent helpers do not look like one. They do not look like someone or people who can or will help you so there is need to keep reminding ourselves not to despise anyone. In the case of Namaan, it was his wife's maid who was captured during one of raiding expeditions against Israel. “Naaman was general of the army under the king of Aram. He was important to his master, who held him in the highest esteem because it was by him that God had given victory to Aram. Naaman was a truly great man, but he was afflicted with a grievous skin disease called leprosy. When the new Isrealite maid noticed what her mistress' husband was battling with, “One day she said to her mistress, “…if only my master could meet the prophet of Samaria, he would be healed of his skin disease.” Naaman did not hesitate! He went straight to his master- king of Aram, and reported what the Israelite maid had said. The king helped Naanan with letter of introduction and gifts, in order to have prophet Elisha introduced to him. Eventually through the help of prophet Elisha, he was healed. Although he was initially furious because prophet Elisha deflated his pride by not coming out physically to see him. Coupled with that, he was instructed to go bathe in river Jordan. He preferred their own river which to him is better than river Jordan. The good news was that, he swallowed his pride after his servant advised him to do what he was instructed. He swallowed his pride. “So he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.” II Kings 5:14 NKJV Remember that sometimes, your God-sent helpers will not look like one you are trying to figure out to help you. They do not look like someone or people who can or will help you so there is need to keep reminding ourselves not to despise anyone as we remind ourselves of God's Word in 1 Peter 2:17 that says “Show proper respect to everyone” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/abimbola-arawande/message
(Deuteronomy 2:5-7) God has given the Edomites an inheritance- a beautiful one! God them an hill country around Mount Seir as their property, which they were living in. The Edomites were the relatives of the Isrealites. The Isrealites, on their way to their own inheritance – promise land - were about to pass through the hill country. God had to instruct the Isrealite not to invade the Edomites. He further instructed them saying “ The Edomites will feel threatened, so be careful. 5 Do not bother them, for I have given them all the hill country around Mount Seir as their property, and I will not give you even one square foot of their land. 6. 7 For the Lord your God has blessed you in everything you have done. He has watched your every step through this great wilderness. During these forty years, the Lord your God has been with you, and you have lacked nothing.”' Do you feel threatened about someone's presence? Do you think someone will hurt you? I just want to remind you that God has you in mind as He had the Edomites in mind. He was fighting their battles without them knowing. Relax! Be calm! Be still and know that what God has promised to be yours is yours and will eventually be yours at the fullness of time. Let us pray Father I thank You for Your Word. Thank You for having beautiful plans and future for us. Help me to trust You, especially when circumstances are contrary to what You said about us. In Jesus' name, I pray. The Hake Report, Fri, 7/3/20: TWO HOURS! The U.S. Founding Fathers in the Declaration of Independence pledged “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” Now scared and angry people have no dignity, and are afraid of losing their job, their livelihood — and won't stand on truth! BOND had a great Men's Forum last night. Satan works both sides: Evil, such as in BLM, Antifa, media, Dems, RINOs, tempts you to hate its people. Don't. CALLERS: Earl from Michigan does not celebrate Independence day. He also comments on Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Cliven Bundy. They argue about ancient history. Samuel from Sweden calls in with comments about tough love towards himself! He had an older mean teacher but who was patriotic unlike anyone younger he knows including his parents! Sean from Santa Fe Springs, CA says there is systemic racism from the Democrats. Richie from Boston, MA remarks on the current lies being pushed by the media but he is hopeful people are waking up. Bible Go-to Guy from Los Angeles, CA, says the Isrealite prophets were great because they admitted that their enslavement was deserved, brought on by their falling away from God. Gerry from Florida comments on some news regarding the officer that was involved in the shooting of Rayshard Brooks, in Atlanta, Georgia. Maze from Dayton, OH asks James if America is a white country amongst other things. This sermon talks about what is called the Gibeonite Deception. In it we see that God actually saves a group of people among those whom He has devoted to destruction out of His mere good grace. He does this by "using sin sinlessly". He uses the lies of the Gibeonites and the hubris and gullibility of the the Isrealite leaders. 1 - The Problem - not seeking the counsel of the Lord in our lives 2- There is always a right way to go from the mess you have made in life 3 - We must pray for wisdom and know the Lord in order to not be deceived by the world, the flesh, and Satan.

Observing the Sabbath might just be the most disregarded commandment. Why? Is it any harder than telling the truth or honoring our parents or NOT committing adultery? In some ways it the one that stands out because it just seems like it doesn’t belong. It’s not as serious as the others. It’s a commandment for people who have the luxury of setting their own schedule. Luann walks us through an exploration into the Hebrew roots of Sabbath, through the lens of her Isrealite-wannabe professor - and explains the difference in keeping the Sabbath and in Sabbath-keeping practices. And that unrelenting business of life that makes a day of rest seem both unattainable and lazy? Well, we talk about the root cause of that too. Anchors aweigh, Stowaways. A message to the conscious Hebrew. From the Jeremiah Series by Marvin E. Davis. Check it out and Share. Shalom!
We tend to do just as the Isrealite people did in Exodus. Just like the people of God who made the golden calf because they were impatient with Moses being on top of Mt. Sinai for so long, we can lose patience and look for replacement gods too. We are asked to wait on Him no matter what the circumstances. If we are close to God and spend time with Him, we will trust Him and keep the faith.

In 2010, BDJ's Cellar presented 2 special Christmas Podcasts; one based on the Nativity story in the Gospel of Matthew, the other on Nativity according to the gospel of Luke. This left us in a predicament for 2011: the other 2 gospels in the Bible (Mark and John) don't speak about the birth of Jesus, so we ran out of Nativity stories. Or did we ? For 2011, we resorted to ancient texts, which were - for good or bad reasons - not included in the Bible. Nonetheless, these texts originate from the earliest days of Christianity. The earliest of these gospels, is the so called Infancy Gospel of Thomas; just what we need for a Christmas Podcast ! The Infancy Gospel of Thomas was written by the early Christians to document the first twelve years of Jesus's life, bridging the gap left in the second chapter of Luke. The story was popular enough to survive in numerous translations, redactions, and parallel stories, for more than a thousand years. The text may even have influenced the authors of the Koran. In the early passages of the story, Jesus shows a disturbing tendency to kill off his playmates when they displease him. He eventually learns to channel his divine abilities in more constructive ways and realizes his calling. So why was this gospel not accepted by the Christian Church Fathers ? To modern readers, it appears to be a simplified, shortened version of the gospels that we know from the Bible; some similarities of 'Thomas' with Mark, Matthew and Luke: - Jesus can do anything, and knows everything. Performs miracles in public. - Jesus has full control over life and death, raises the dead on various occasions. - People around Jesus don't really understand who he is, or what he stands for. - Jesus does not comply strictly with all Jewish rituals. - Jesus seems less concerned with the Here & Now, but more about the spiritual life (right and wrong) - His mother Mary does not play a significant role in his life. - and so on. I suppose the Church Fathers were not so much concerend with matching the gospels, but more about the Infancy Gospel not matching the dogma's that the church fathers themselves developed in the early days of the church. And they may have wanted to dodge a difficult question: if Jesus did all these things as a child, why don't Mark, Matthew and Luke speak about them ? Frankly speaking, in the Bible or not, these are captivating and amusing stories from the Early Days; never set to music of any kind before, BDJ's cellar is proud tho present this world premiere Podcast. Text: Thomas the Isrealite. Narrator: Bart D. Ehrman: American New Testament scholar, currently the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Music: George Harrison, the Beatles, Julian Lennon Production: BDJ
