Paul Werni and his son Anton created a grain-to-glass family distillery called 45th Parallel. With a production facility in Wisconsin but a cocktail room in Stillwater, they built their reputation by sourcing the best crops from a local farmers and convincing them to become suppliers. He runs a distillery production facility that has expanded into an event center, restaurant, and bar, representing half of his business. With his expertise in farming and cocktails, Paul has become a respected figure in the industry.Stephanie [00:00:12]:Hello, everybody, and welcome to the podcast. We are here with Paul Werney and Anton Werney, and they are the co-founders of 45th Parallel Spirits and Distillery. And they are located in New Richmond, Wisconsin. And in the meantime, they've opened a cocktail room in Stillwater, Wisconsin, and they make some very delicious products. I think the first product I ever had of yours was the vodka because obviously that's where most people start. Right. But you were like I felt like the second person that I heard use the term grain to glass, the first person being Gina Carver at J. Carver Distillery.Paul [00:00:54]:Yeah, we were the first distillery in the region. And at that time, I was a little naive. I thought that everybody started with the raw materials and actually made their own stuff. But that is somewhat rare with some disorders.Thank you for reading Stephanie's Dish Newsletter. This post is public so feel free to share it.Stephanie [00:01:11]:Yeah. And a lot of people will buy product and then make something with the byproduct, not unlike you see in the wine industry. Let's face it, very few people are actually growing their own grapes. They're buying grapes and then making their wine from that. But you guys really started with that grain to glass philosophy. And tell me about that. Like, literally seeing the grains and going, this is what I want to do.Paul [00:01:37]:Well, because of where we live, grain is what's available. You don't have a lot of fruits here or any other type of sugar sources, so you have to start with starches from grain, break them down. Fortunately, here in the Richmond, we're in a rural area, there's a lot of farmers here, so we have access to just about any grain that we want. And we get all our grain for our products is put on fire just on the road.Stephanie [00:02:04]:And did you know those people? And is that like, how did the first germ of an idea of like, hey, let's start making cocktail?Paul [00:02:15]:Well, as far as the farmer goes, I went to the local mills. When you have a farming community, you're going to have a mill. And so I went to the mills and I asked them who's going to have the best crops? And both mills gave me the same mail. And so I was able to convince that farmer to be a supplier. He's not a very large farm, about 500 acres, just a few employees, and that's it. As far as making cocktails, the industry, we started out as pretty much a production facility, and that's really what we are. However, the industry is changing. So small Distilleries really have to make money on site. So a few years ago, we added an event center, restaurant and bar. And now that's half of our business.Stephanie [00:03:05]:It'S not surprising to me because I did an event with you guys, and I've done lots of events at Distilleries, but I felt like you really has a loyal clientele. They were very into what we were doing that day. We did a bloody Mary tasting and also the whole restaurant side of it. You weren't just, like, offering Shakoori plates and had a food truck outside, like a lot of folks, you had, like, a full on restaurant, and the food was good.Paul [00:03:33]:Yeah. Well, I think you know who Scott Davis is, and he's and he's a friend of mine. We've known each other for 30 years, and he runs the kitchen over there, and he has a lot of experience in the Minneapolis area with running kitchens over there.Stephanie [00:03:51]:Yeah, it was clear that this wasn't and I don't mean to say that in a negative light, but for some folks, it's kind of an afterthought, right? They're trying to get you to stay around longer. They're trying to provide more amenities, but it wasn't what they started out to do. And you guys feel like you had an intentional way of going about that. And there aren't a lot of restaurants in that area. You're kind of in the middle of a field next to the liftbridge production facility, too, so I imagine people kind of come from all over.Paul [00:04:25]:We offer something different than a lot of the places in a small town. We have an Italian pizza oven, and we have a chef that has experience in the downtown Minneapolis market. We're not really trying to be your average and I don't mean this in a bad way bar food. We're trying to offer something different. New Richmond is a growing community. It's over 10,000 people now, and there are a lot of people in that region that are looking for something.Stephanie [00:04:57]:I really was impressed with your event schedules. You do a lot of events, but also they look fun and interesting and the kind of have a little twist to it. It seems like events are just a huge part of what you do to because your calendar is just full.Paul [00:05:13]:Yeah, there's a temptation to go with weddings, but weddings are a lot of work, so we wanted something different. Plus, being in a small town, you don't really have a lot of opportunities for, like, a comedy show, for an art show, stuff like that. That's what we're trying we're trying to bring in a variety of events to a small community so they don't have to drive 50 miles to get to.Stephanie [00:05:37]:Yeah, I liked it. Let's talk about so you've got the vodka, then you have a gin, and then you have referent, which is infused with horseradish. I'm assuming that came about because you're a big Bloody Mary guy in Wisconsin.Paul [00:05:56]:Actually, it came about when a couple of Russians came into our building in about 2009. And they have a place in St. Paul, Moscow, on the hill, and Russians like Porsche, so they asked us to make it, so we make it. And the son of the owner over there, he started his own business. And the are the owners of that brand. We don't own the brand.Stephanie's Dish Newsletter is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Stephanie [00:06:23]:Oh, so you just produce it?Paul [00:06:25]:We just produce it. It's funny you say because you were here for the Bloody Mary.Stephanie [00:06:32]:I was.Paul [00:06:33]:You said gin, horseradish vodka, and regular vodka. However, 90, least 90% of our production is whiskey.Stephanie [00:06:44]:Yeah. And you have three that you're selling on shelves that I am aware of. You might have some specials, too, or special barrel ages that you're doing.Paul [00:06:55]:We do. The three base ones are bourbon, rye, and our wheat whiskey. And each one of them has different finishes, different types of cast that we finish in. But those are our base whiskeys.Stephanie [00:07:09]:Which do you think is your best seller or know is your best seller? And is it the one that you like?Paul [00:07:16]:It is the one I like. It's bourbon and bourbon. By far, bourbon is the hottest whiskey out there.Stephanie [00:07:24]:Is it because people don't understand about wheat and rye whiskeys?Paul [00:07:28]:Yes. Well, it's some of it. I think the profile bourbon is going to be a little bit sweeter, and I think it's gonna be for the more the the general palate. Where is a rye whiskey? If a bartender or a brewer comes into our facility, they're going to sit down and say, I want a rye. I think it's a little bit spicier. I think of it as like a real strong cup of coffee. It takes a more advanced palate for it.Stephanie [00:08:02]:And then you also are contracted to brew or to make the Gamaliode aquavi.Paul [00:08:10]:Yes.Stephanie [00:08:11]:I love that product. It's very underrated. I think it's so complex and just makes such delicious cocktails. But again, it's a product that a lot of people have to sample it and get familiar with it because dill. Yeah, it's obvious in the Bloody Mary, but there's a lot of savory side cocktails that really can be delicious uses with that.Paul [00:08:36]:Yeah. Bartenders, especially in urban areas, love the Aquavites because they can do so many different things with them. There's a lot of great things out there that the general public just doesn't know a lot about. I try it once, but you have your meat, potatoes, you have vodka, gin, rum, and whiskey. All these other things like lacurs and brandy's and ODA bays. They have their audience, but it's a small audience.Stephanie [00:09:15]:I think that's why people like to go to bars, because I think they don't feel confident buying those products and experimenting with them at home. But the will take a chance on a cocktail at a bar.Paul [00:09:27]:Yes. The Aqua beach, it's kind of a different animal. I mean, if I were to go out to California or New York or any other state, they would be interested in aquaman. That's what they're looking for. They're not looking for vodka, they're not looking for gin. They can get those pretty easily. But that's something unique.Stephanie [00:09:51]:Yeah. And the flavor profile is different. And maybe because of the Scandinavian sort of story. There is a lot of story to it and you can get different variations. I know you guys have a holiday. And then there's the dill. And there's different versions too.Paul [00:10:06]:Yeah, there are. They each have a little bit of a different profile, but they all have that base dill.Stephanie [00:10:17]:I'm going to kind of switch gears just a little bit and ask a question about we're on the verge this weeks. Likely we're going to see the legalization of marijuana in Minnesota. Likely maybe we'll see the bills at the house. With that said, it feels to me like we're seeing a shift in younger people and that they're not drinking as much cocktails and beers and that they are adding this whole THC profile to their repertoire and to their going out, and it's creating a whole different consumer. And I wonder how distilleries will deal with that, because I know the breweries are creating THC products and seltzers. Will that be different for the distillery environment?Paul [00:11:10]:As of right now, we can't combine it with distilled spirits. I think a lot of small breweries might go into seltzers and that they can add it to, but has far as adding it to Baca, that's just not going to happen right now. But that whole movement, it hasn't affected us yet. I know it's affected wineries, it's affected breweries quite a bit. But spirits are still a growing category, the only one that's still growing.Stephanie [00:11:52]:Okay. Because I hope that continues to be the case. And certainly maybe there's room for everybody once we kind of settle out where the dust is going to land. And maybe too, I don't know. Is it time for some consolidation in the spirits industry, potentially?Paul [00:12:09]:Consolidation in the spirits industry? Well, it was an industry that was extremely consolidated when we started up. There were maybe 50 distillers in the whole country. All the growth has happened in the last 15 years, and now there's probably around 25 to 100 to 3000 distilleries. I know what you're saying. Like, breweries kind of got a little saturated. I'm not sure if distilling is there yet.Stephanie [00:12:42]:Okay. Yeah. And it takes such a maturation, too, of the product, right. Because many of where people shine is in the craft. And it takes a while to have a crafted whiskey, obviously, because of the length of time to make it vodka. I think there's craft in vodka, and I bet you think there's craft and vodka, but people underestimate the craft that's involved, right?Paul [00:13:08]:They do. I think you hit it on the head. It takes a long time for whiskey distillers to come out with good product. I would say five to ten years before a distillery really knows what they're doing and really can put out some well aged stuff. It's probably closer to ten because they got to make money and you start releasing stuff a little earlier, five. So we're just getting to the point where you have distilleries around the country, small ones, that started 1015 years ago that are coming, but with products that are capable of competing on a world stage. And so I think you're going to have really interesting and nice whiskeys popping up over the next five to ten years.Stephanie [00:13:56]:Do you think? We'll see the same with rum because it's a category I personally really enjoy, but it's hard to drink local craft rums because they're not great.Paul [00:14:11]:The thing is, it's the way whiskey was maybe seven years ago. A lot of young whiskey out there. You have a lot of young rum out there and servicing materials is a lot trickier and more expensive, too. Yeah, I don't know, at least for a startup distillery, it's a lot harder to jump right into that and sit on it and make it quality right away, where if you're already established and you can add that into your portfolio and sit on and not really rush it, you're probably going to come out. Well, there's another aspect to it. A lot of whiskey producers, a lot of the new ones have a lot of money, so they're able to produce and sit on it or buy, purchase well aged whiskey and put it out there in the market. They have large investors, a lot of cash flow. So you're seeing that in whiskey, you're not seeing that in rum. A lot of the rum producers, they're brand new, small micro distilleries. They don't have a lot of money, they don't need a lot of equipment to ferment it because it's a sugar base.Stephanie [00:15:23]:Right.Paul [00:15:24]:Fermentations are easy. Distillations are easy, but they need cash flow because they're not starting up with a lot of cash. They got to make cocktails with it, they got to sell it. That's why you're seeing so few. A lot of early ones are like super dependent on their cocktail room to make money. And so you want that rum right away to have a diverse cocktail.Stephanie [00:15:44]:Right.Paul [00:15:47]:We wanted to do forever, but just never really committed to it until recently. We are making rum, but you won't see it for a while.Stephanie [00:15:57]:Well, when it's time to see it, let me know, because that means it passed your muster, so I'll be interested in it. And I do think, like Skullvin Distillery, they made this Habanero white rum that stood out right away because it was so different and it is a different product because you can use it in cocktails and we put it in Bloody Marys too. It's different than most rums and for that reason we do buy it. But I'm waiting for the craft to come to that category because I think, like whiskey, you can really have a lot of nuance and there can be a lot of variety.Paul [00:16:32]:Well, it's going to take some time because I'll tell you what, in 2007, I went to a whiskey. I mean, I went to a Distillers conference and the theme of that conference was rum. The next wave. That was 15 years ago.Stephanie [00:16:48]:Okay. All right. I'll keep holding my breath over here.Paul [00:16:52]:There's definitely quite a few distilleries sitting on surround right now in Minnesota and Wisconsin.Stephanie [00:16:59]:Okay. All right. And I know the barrel age gins, obviously, are kind of a way to experiment with some new flavors there. Do you guys do a barrel age gin too?Paul [00:17:08]:We do, but it's not really distributed yet. Okay. There's a lot of things that we work on that we'll work on for a few years before we actually put them out.Stephanie [00:17:19]:Yes. And you are straddling not straddling the line, but you have businesses in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. I know you're not Soothsayers, but do you think that some of these breweries and moving into Wisconsin to increase production has put any fear of God into the Minnesota politicians, or is it just status quo, in your opinion?Paul [00:17:41]:It does. It needs to change. When we were submitting for our permits in Minnesota, the state was very helpful. They really wanted to make the process easy for us. Even. That being said, it was still much more difficult at doing Wisconsin. But their comments to me, they're the only one that's trying to move into Minnesota. Everybody else wants to move out.Stephanie [00:18:12]:Yeah.Paul [00:18:13]:I hope that they do learn something from that, because it is a good state. It is a good market. It should be a little easier. You shouldn't be losing your biggest distilleries.Stephanie [00:18:28]:We shouldn't.Paul [00:18:29]:Yeah. And you shouldn't be losing breweries. You got a significant brewery being built in Huntsville right now, sort of based.Stephanie [00:18:41]:All right. I know that means the answer is people are trying, but not hard enough, and sometimes it just takes some time. Right?Paul [00:18:49]:Yes.Stephanie [00:18:50]:Well, it's been really fun to talk to you guys again. I did an event with you, and I was really impressed with your staff. I thought your facility was great. And the people I talked to that were from the town that came to the event, they were like, such diehard supporters of you. They were sweet.Paul [00:19:06]:Well, we appreciate it, and thank you for stopping by.Stephanie [00:19:09]:Yeah, it was great. All right, have a good day. Thanks for spending time with me. I appreciate it.Paul [00:19:15]:Thank you.Stephanie [00:19:15]:All right, we'll talk soon. Bye. This is a public episode. I was raised in a Pentecostal household and believe that one can experience salvation through their relationship with God. The concept of the Holy Spirit's baptism, as described in the Bible when Jesus breathed on his disciples and said "Receive the Holy Spirit," holds great significance. However, this area has been subject to abuse for decades. In Jude 12, there is a warning about murmurers and complainers who act out of their own lusts, similar to the false teachers described in 2 Peter 2:15 who have gone astray and conduct themselves for personal gain, speaking great swelling words. The doctrine of Balaam, mentioned in Revelation 2:14, is referred to in the book of Numbers where Balaam advised Moloch to put out the prettiest girls for the men of Israel to mix with, forbidden by God. Unfortunately, some televangelists are guilty of promoting this doctrine of Balaam, perverting the gospel by teaching that Jesus never proclaimed himself as the Son of God and therefore the Pharisees were not guilty of crucifying him. This idea undermines the significance of Jesus' sacrifice and is a heretical, man-centered gospel that elevates the speakers and makes them equal to Jesus. The teachings of Nicolay, which focus on the clergy having power over the laity, can lead to a loss of dependence on the Lord and exploitation of the concept of miracles. To test a miracle or doctrine, one must consider the facts according to the Bible and the focus of the teachings. If the focus is on the speaker or human experience, rather than on righteousness and holiness, it is likely not of the Holy Spirit. Christianity has become commercialized and industrialized, with some charismatic movements becoming silly and asinine. The best way to hear from God is to read the Bible, as He can quicken something to your heart that aligns with His Word. Regarding speaking in tongues, it is only possible through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and cannot be controlled by the speaker. The Lord chooses who to empower with these gifts, but it does not make them a prophet. To speak in tongues, one needs both the Spirit of God and the words given by the Spirit.

An email asked me to share my thoughts about psychics. Some people enjoy a field trip to a psychic, fortune teller or palm reader. Let's have a chat.
The NHL's Trade Deadline has come and passed. Before it did though, Dave and Patrick were joined by Kyle Moores to discuss what they thought might happen at the Deadline. This episode has it some! Fortune tellers, technical issues, an appearance from Mr. Delicious due to said issues. We make it work.
The Birth of Buddha is an emmersive, spiritual story, that goes to the origins of one of the world's great religeons. The Four Signs that prompted a pampered prince to retreat from the world were an old man, a sick man, a corpse, and a monk or a yogin. Buddha was born Siddhartha Gautama, a prince of Kapilavastu (on the Indian-Nepalese border) in the 5th century BCE. Soothsayers predicted he would become either a universal king or a buddha (awakened one). Jana tells the story and chants too.
There's a long history in divination and fortune telling. One of the most famous prognosticators of all time is Nostradamus; we get to talkin' about that feller. In more recent history, such claims of psychic power have come from people like Uri Geller, Miss Cleo, and John Edward. And the light gave birth to Angels. And the earth gave birth to Man. And the fire gave birth to the Djinn, creatures condemned to dwell in the void between the worlds. One who wakes a Djinn will be given three wishes. Upon the granting of the third, the unholy legions of the Djinn will be freed to rule the earth. Fear one thing in all there is... FEAR THE DJINN." Full disclosure… I need to preface this episode by saying that I'm going to SUPER FUCK UP a butt ton of words in this episode. If you're new, yeah this is what Moody does to me. If you're a long time listener, then you're used to my idiocy and you find it endearing. Ok, with that being said, Dear friends, today we bring you an episode that your esteemed host (that would be me) has been wanting to do for a while. If you didn't get it from the previous quote…and the name of the episode… well you're an idiot… But it's the djinn… We're talking about the djinn. Djinn you ask? Like a genie? Well kind of, let's get into what they are, what they do, and hear stories of djinn encounters. So what exactly are djinn you ask? Djinn are believed to be powerful, invisible beings, capable of possessing people and even inflicting suffering on them. Stories of human encounters with djinn are very common across cultures and history. Djinn originated in the Muslim world. Muslims believe that the djinn are real as the Quran explicitly confirms their existence and considers them an independent nation. There is a whole chapter in the Qur'an named “the Chapter of Djinn,'” where detailed information about these beings is revealed. Al-Jinn is the 72nd chapter of the Quran and contains 28 verses. According to Al-islam.org, The designation of the Chapter reflects that it mainly treats of invisible creatures, the jinn, their belief in the Noble Prophet of the Islamic faith (S), the Holy Qur'an, and Resurrection, and the groups of believers and disbelievers amongst them. The closing Verses concern the knowledge of the unseen unknown to all beings besides God Almighty. It is narrated from the Noble Imam Sadiq (as) as saying: "One who recites Surah al-Jinn many a time will never suffer from the evil eye, magic, and ploys of the Jinn and magicians but will accompany Muhammad (S). O Lord! I believe in none besides him and I will never turn toward anyone but him. Reciting the blessed Chapter would be a prelude to the awareness of its contextual meaning and applying it to one's life. AboutIslam.net describes the chapter and says God revealed to Prophet Muhammad that a group of jinn listened to his recitation of the Quran. They returned to their own society and described the recitation as wondrous, saying that it called to what is true and sensible by distinguishing between right and wrong. Those who listened believed in it and reported such to the others of their kind. They declared that they would never again associate anything with God.This chapter puts this response to the unbelievers of Makkah who also listened to the recitation of Quran yet failed to believe in it. Those of the jinn who listened immediately embraced a true untainted faith. They said that the recitation exalted God and further stated that He had neither partner nor offspring. At the time many Arabs believed that the angels were God's daughters through marriage to the jinn but the jinn emphatically denied this. The jinn declare that some of their number said shocking things about God even though they believed no one would ever have the audacity to tell lies about God. But now that they had heard the Quran for themselves they realized that those ideas were false. In the past some people had sought protection with some of the jinn but this only led them further away from the truth and increased them in sin. Some humans and some jinn thought that God would never send a messenger to guide and warn them. God, however, is generous and kind and does indeed send messengers to guide to the right way. The jinn disclaim any knowledge of the unseen, stating that it remains beyond their reach. We tried to reach the heavens, they say, but found it to be fortified by stern guards and shooting stars. Before Prophet Muhammad, the jinn were able to collect information by eavesdropping on the angels. They then passed it on to astrologers, fortune-tellers and others of that ilk. This is no longer possible and if they try they will find a celestial deterrent lying in wait for them. They do not know what is in store for those on earth. God's intentions (misfortune or guidance) remain unseen. The jinn then describe their own situation and their attitude towards guidance. Some of the jinn are righteous, others are not. They follow many different paths and hold many different opinions and beliefs. They understand that they can never damage God's plans for earth and its inhabitants and they can never escape God's will. When we heard this recitation of the Quran we believed in it and those who believe in God need not fear loss, injustice or an unbearable burden. Some (jinn) submit to God and are guided; others refuse to accept the truth. Those who accept the truth have found their way to salvation; the others are fuel for the Hellfire. This applies to humans as well, some accept guidance others plough a course towards Hell. God tells Prophet Muhammad that if the Makkans had remained on the straight path, He would have provided them with abundant rain (water, and assuring their provision). This is also a means by which God tests people. The Quran tells us that having plenty is as great a test as having little. The person who pays no attention to God's warnings will face an arduous punishment, spiraling down into Hell. The mosques are built for God alone; they make worship easy but a Muslim can pray anywhere (with very few exceptions). Worship is for God alone so do not call on anyone but Him. When Prophet Muhammad stood up to make supplication the crowd pressed in around him, the unbelievers ready to attack him. God protected him on this and on many other occasions. This chapter now addresses Prophet Muhammad in a decisive tone making it clear to him that once he has delivered the message he has no say over how people respond. He is told to tell the people that he prays to God alone and he does not set up partners or associates with Him. He tells them that he cannot cause harm and he cannot force them to go in the right direction. Prophet Muhammad says that if he were to disobey God no one could protect him and he could never find a place to hide from Him. His mission is only to deliver the message. Whoever disobeys God and His messenger will find themselves in the Hellfire. The disbelievers think they have the strength in numbers but they will soon come to understand that Prophet Muhammad has God's power and strength behind him. Prophet Muhammad informs the disbelievers that he does not know when the threatened punishment will take place. He has no part in that decision, it is God alone who decides. The promised punishments in this life, and in the life to come, are matters of the unseen and God does not reveal such matters to anybody. However there is one exception, God may reveal unseen matters to one of His messengers if necessary. Guardian angels protect both the messenger and the message. God knows everything about His messengers, there is nothing that escapes His knowledge. Everything is counted and measured. The message is carefully monitored. So that's a breakdown of the chapter of the jinn as described in the Quran. So what exactly do the jinn do and what are they about? There are different types of jinn in Islam. Some have wings and fly in the air, some exist as snakes and dogs, and some Jinn are Earthbound beings who live and attach themselves to people and objects in our world. Disbelieving Jinn (Shayateen) whispers evil thoughts into people's minds and constantly try to divert man from the path of righteousness. Some Jinn constantly instill doubts in human minds. Jinn can make humans think certain thoughts, leading them to misidentify these thoughts as their own notions. Jinn can make us dream about certain things. The strongest, evilest variety of Jinn is called Ifrit, and they are rare. Jinn delight in punishing humans for any harm done to them, intentionally or unintentionally, and are said to be responsible for many diseases and all kinds of accidents; however, those human beings knowing the proper magical procedure can exploit the jinn to their advantage. The appearance of jinn can be divided into three major categories: zoomorphic storms and shadows anthropomorphic. Jinn are assumed to be able to appear in shapes of various animals such as cats, owls and onagers (which are just wild asses, or “Moody's” in the scientific world). Serpents are the animals most associated with jinn; in Islamic tradition, many narratives concern a serpent who was actually a jinn. Dogs are another animal often associated with jinn, especially black dogs. Gazelles, foxes, and ostriches are also associated with jinn, though not necessarily thought to be the embodiment of jinn but rather their mounts or hosts (i.e. mythical vehicle or vessel). The jinn are also related to the wind, and may even appear in mists or sandstorms. Although sandstorms are believed to be caused by jinn, others, such as Abu Yahya Zakariya' ibn Muhammad al-Qazwini and Ghazali attribute them to natural causes. Otherwise sandstorms are thought to be caused by a battle between different groups of jinn. Though a common characteristic of the jinn is their lack of individuality, they may gain individuality by materializing in human forms, such as Sakhr and several jinn known from magical writings. In their anthropomorphic shape, however, they are said to stay partly animal and are not fully human. Therefore, individual jinn are commonly depicted as monstrous and anthropomorphized creatures with body parts from different animals or humans with animal traits. The following is a list of the different jinn. Jann, a type of jinn Marid, a powerful rebellious demon Ifrit, a powerful type of demon in Islamic mythology associated with the underworld Ghoul, associated with graveyards and consuming human flesh Si'lat, talented shapeshifters often appearing in human form and female or male Nasnas, a creature mentioned as Shaqq in One Thousand and One Nights Hatif, a voice that can be heard without one's discovering the body that made it Qareen, a spiritual double of human with a ghostly nature Hinn, supernatural creatures, besides jinn and demons Shaitan, also known as demons who make humans and other jinns sin Malak, pure creatures that are created by light at the service of God/an angel. Jinn are said to inhabit caves, deserted places, graveyards and darkness. According to Sakr (pr: “soccer”) they marry, produce children, eat, drink and die but unlike human beings have the power to take on different shapes and are capable of moving heavy objects almost instantly from one place to another. The Qur'an mentions how the Prophet Solomon contrived to subjugate the jinn and get them to perform tasks that required strength, intelligence and skill. The lines between devils and jinn are often blurred. Especially in folklore, jinn share many characteristics usually associated with devils, as both are held responsible for mental illness, diseases and possession. The jinn share many characteristics with humans, whereas devils lack them. Folklore differentiates both types of creatures as well. Since the term shaitan is also used as an epithet to describe the taqalan (humans and jinn), naming malevolent jinn also as shayāṭīn in some sources, it is sometimes difficult to hold them apart. Satan and his hosts of devils (shayatin) generally appear in traditions associated with Jewish and Christian narratives, while jinn represent entities of polytheistic background. According to the website from the journal of the royal society of medicine...One Islamic concept that has entered into western mythology is that of the jinn or genies, as in the story of Aladdin. However, according to Islamic belief, jinn are real creatures that form a world other than that of mankind, capable of causing physical and mental harm to human beings. An example of such harm is possession. As defined by Littlewood, possession is the belief that an individual has been entered by an alien spirit or other parahuman force, which then controls the person or alters that person's actions and identity. To the observer, this would be manifested as an altered state of consciousness. In the UK, jinn possession is most likely to be seen among people from Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Middle East or North Africa. Some commentators claim that possession is a culture-bound syndrome but others argue that, although the manifestations may differ according to culture, the underlying theme is always the same. In Islamic writings true jinn possession can cause a person to have seizures and to speak in an incomprehensible language. The possessed is unable to think or speak from his own will. In cases of real possession the task of the therapist, who must have strong faith in Allah, is to expel the jinn. This is usually done in one of three ways—remembrance of God and recitation of the Qur'an (dhikr); blowing into the person's mouth, cursing and commanding the jinn to leave; and seeking refuge with Allah by calling upon Allah, remembering him, and addressing his creatures (ruqyah). Some faith healers strike the possessed person, claiming that it is the jinn that suffer the pain. This practice, however, is deplored by Muslim scholars as being far from the principles of Islam and the instructions of the Prophet. We found a couple case files of suspected possession by jinn. We'll go through one for ya! A 25-year-old woman from Iraq with no previous psychiatric history gradually withdrew from other people, became uncommunicative and stopped eating and drinking. Investigations revealed no organic disease and severe depressive illness was diagnosed. She underwent electro-convulsive therapy without much improvement. Her family, believing her to be possessed by jinn but not wanting to say so to the doctors for fear of being labelled as superstitious, took her to a local faith healer, who offered to treat her in the traditional Islamic way. After a few sessions of combined dhikr and ruqyah her condition improved and she resumed eating and drinking. On recovery she had no explanation for what had happened, though she remembered the sequence of events. She stated that she had been aware of her surroundings, but had been unable to initiate anything. She denied feeling low in mood at the time. 5 years later she remains well and without medication. So was it a jinn? Maybe… Probably… Most likely… The crazy thing is it's not only humans which are possessed, but also animals, trees and other objects. By doing this, the evil Jinn hope to make people worship others aside from God. The possession of idols is one way to do this. Not so long ago the world-wide phenomenon of Hindu idols drinking milk, shocked the world. From Bombay to London, Delhi to California, countless idols were lapping up milk. Ganesh the elephant god, Hanuman the monkey god and even Shiva lingam, the male private organ (!), all seemed to guzzle down the milk as if there was no tomorrow! Unfortunately people were taken in by this and many flocked to feed the Hindu gods. This feat was undoubtedly done by the Jinn as a classic attempt to make people worship false gods. Another one of the powers of the Jinn, is that they are able to take on any physical form they like. Thus, they can appear as humans, animals, trees and anything else. Thousands of people have sighted strange looking creatures all over the world - and it seems more plausible all the sightings of such creatures may have been Jinns parading in different forms. The average Jinn is stronger than the average man, although specific men can be stronger than certain Jinn. Jinn can teleport from one place to another and travel at the speed of light. Whereas Jinn have several powers that humans do not possess, mankind possesses more wisdom overall. Jinn also have their own varieties of animals and beasts. The jinn had an indirect impact on Islamic art through the creation of talismans that were alleged to guard the bearer from the jinn and were enclosed in leather and included Qur'anic verses. It was not unusual for those talismans to be inscribed with separated Arabic letters, because the separation of those letters was thought to positively affect the potency of the talisman overall. An object that was inscribed with the word of Allah was thought to have the power to ward off evil from the person who obtained the object, though many of these objects also had astrological signs, depictions of prophets, or religious narratives. a sorcerer may summon a jinn and force him to perform orders. Summoned jinn may be sent to the chosen victim to cause demonic possession. Such summonings were done by invocation, by aid of talismans or by satisfying the jinn, thus to make a contract. Jinn are also regarded as assistants of soothsayers. Soothsayers reveal information from the past and present; the jinn can be a source of this information because their lifespans exceed those of humans. Another way to subjugate them is by inserting a needle to their skin or dress. Since jinn are afraid of iron, they are unable to remove it with their own power. Another interesting thing is that During the Rwandan genocide, both Hutus and Tutsis avoided searching local Rwandan Muslim neighborhoods because they widely believed the myth that local Muslims and mosques were protected by the power of Islamic magic and the efficacious jinn. In the Rwandan city of Cyangugu, arsonists ran away instead of destroying the mosque because they feared the wrath of the jinn, whom they believed were guarding the mosque. Ok so that was a lot to take in. There is a ton of stuff out there on the jinn. Since the jinn are rooted in religion some of the readings can get a bit tedious and honestly if you're not familiar with the Islamic religion it can be hard to follow some of the stuff and put it together. Hopefully we did a decent job, up to this point. The real jinn are quite different from the jinn that have been westernized for entertainment, which is another thing that can make it difficult to figure out what is real and what is just westernized stories. That being said, other religions have comparable spirits to the jinn. The ancient Sumerians believed in Pazuzu, a wind demon, who was shown with "a rather canine face with abnormally bulging eyes, a scaly body, a snake-headed penis, the talons of a bird and usually wings." So basically, it's chainsaw. The ancient Babylonians believed in utukku, a class of demons which were believed to haunt remote wildernesses, graveyards, mountains, and the sea, all locations where jinn were later thought to reside. The Assyrians believed in the Alû, sometimes described as a wind demon residing in desolate ruins who would sneak into people's houses at night and steal their sleep. The description of jinn is almost identical with that of the shedim from Jewish mythology. As with the jinn, some of whom follow the law brought by Muhammad, some of the shedim are believed to be followers of the law of Moses and consequently good. As in Islam, the idea of spiritual entities converting to one's own religion can be found in Buddhism. According to lore, Buddha preached to Devas and Asura, spiritual entities who, like humans, are subject to the cycle of life, and who resemble the Islamic notion of jinn, who are also ontologically placed among humans in regard to eschatological destiny. Some scholars evaluated whether the jinn might be compared to fallen angels in Christian traditions. Comparable to Augustine's descriptions of fallen angels as ethereal, jinn seem to be considered as the same substance. Although the concept of fallen angels is not absent in the Quran, the jinn nevertheless differ in their major characteristics from that of fallen angels: While fallen angels fell from heaven, the jinn did not, but try to climb up to it in order to receive the news of the angels. Jinn are closer to daemons. How about we leave you with a few spooky stories of jinn! These are copied word for word and we tried to correct mistakes but we may have missed some! I was staying in Makkah one summer and living in an apartment under King Fahd Mosque (we were studying with the imam of the masjid). We were sleeping with about 7 of us in one room. I was lying down staring at the ceiling with my leg bent up and something came and shook me real hard. everybody was sleeping so i woke one of the dudes up and he was like just go and sleep in the other room. When i went into the other room everybody was sleeping too (3 ppl) but the light was flickering and the ceiling fan was shaking back and forth and it wasn't on (the blades werent spinning) so i was like weird and went to sleep.. bout 5 minutes later the dude that told me to go to the other room came running in and said something had grabbed him and covered his mouth as he was lying down... and he couldn't breathe but somehow managed to say "audhu billahi...'' So we were freaked out and phoned the imam in the middle of the night and he came and slept in the ap that night. Also in the same apartment at night you could hear people running and jumping in the mosque above in the middle of the night but no one was up there (we checked many times) and in one corner of the apt you could always hear someone reciting Quran.. and it was the most beautiful recitation i ever heard (better than sudais and all the rest) Creepy!! How about another there was this 9 year old kid that lived in the village and he went missing one night, which was strange because all the doors were locked to go outside the house and there was no other possible way to go out of the house. They woke up in the morning and he wasnt in his bed so they got everyone they knew and did a search for him everywhere, they didnt find him the village but in the middle of the night the next they found him in a nearby graveyard. Thankfully he was safe. But everyone didnt know how he could of possibly got out of the house. Then everyone thought it has to be a jinn. This is a true story and happened while i was in pakistan! Someone posted a story about how when his maternal grandmother was on her deathbed, a cat started to appear in their home. The cat would even appear in the home when all the doors and windows were closed. It had a really bad smell and a very dirty coat. And whenever someone recited a holy verse from the Quran, it would vanish. After the grandmother passed away, the cat would still appear and the few times that it did, everyone in the house fell sick. Another?… Ok So apparently, in Saudi, my aunt lived in a house that was always being visited by a particular jinn who used to annoy her family. Once, she was laying in bed at night with her husband. She felt that something was off and when she left the room, she found her husband watching TV on the couch. When they went back to the bedroom to confront the jinn, it just laughed and went away. Ok one more: My great uncle went to visit his cousins in India. His cousins told him that since it was summertime they would all sleep in the courtyard together. However, they told him he wasn't allowed to place his bedding in a particular corner. Apparently, a jinn slept there and strange things happened if any one disturbs that corner. My great uncle said it was nonsense and decided to sleep there anyway. One night, he woke up on the other side of the court. He laughed at first and thought it was his cousins who were pranking him and decided to sleep there again. The following night, the same thing happened, so he left a note next to his pillow saying, ”Stop pranking me. I know there is no jinn.” That night, he said he was pushed off his bed, and his bedding was thrown on the other side. A note was thrown into his lap which said, ‘I sleep here.” The scary part is, it wasn't that dark and there was no one there. So we're not gonna lie, religion is not really our forte. But hopefully we were able to get some of it right! The history and depictions of the jinn are pretty cool when you get into it. Hopefully you guys enjoyed it as well. The Financial Therapy Podcast - It's Not Just About The Money
Investment success requires that a person have a high tolerance for boredom, which means turning a deaf ear to the financial press's investment panic-de-jour. It's good for your financial health to avoid following the advice of prognosticating financial soothsayers. Even when one of them is me. In May of 2020 as the pandemic was shutting down the economy, I made a firm recommendation to my clients and readers who could put off a decision to buy real estate, to wait a while before buying a new home. Anyone who acted on my advice and waited to buy residential real estate cost themselves a bundle. You can read more here.

On this episode of The Impatient Investor, Andrew discusses why people should not rely on the so-called investing gurus, who claim to be able to read market indicators. The only market indicators you should rely on are the ones that have proven to be reliable year after year.

The great barrier and waterfall created by Jeff Dungfelder. "After Dante takes us through the Vestibule for “undecided” and Agnostics; a place for Virtuous Pagans who lived good lives but weren’t baptized; then four levels of punishment for those whose sins were based on lack of self-control; a separate level for Heretics; and finally a level for those whose sins were violent. "To get to the next level Virgil and Dante have to ride down through the Great Barrier and Waterfall on the back of the winged mythological creature Geryon. Here Dante informs us that “there is a place in Hell called Malebolge” (literally translated as ‘evil pockets’) where those guilty of Fraud and Malice have been consigned. "Their sins run deeper than simple lack of self-control or violence. The sinners (Pimps, Simonists, Soothsayers) are intentionally deceptive and malicious so the punishments are more severe. "My piece of music “Their Sins Run Deep” is a reflection about where they have been and where they are headed. The journey downward is full of many details, many things to think about, to contemplate. "Listening to these musical details is the key of discovery in searching for our true selves. In Dante’s view of human nature we’re all hypocrites in one way or another. But some hypocrites learn about their true selves. Then they repent and make sincere efforts to do better. Hell, on the other hand, is reserved as a kind of “college of sullen hypocrites.” "Sullen students never learn and never change; not now, not ever. That’s why they’re in Hell forever. Their sins run deep." Part of the Inferno project to imagine and compose the sounds of Dante’s Hell, marking the 700th anniversary of The Divine Comedy. What was intended to be a breakdown of the Ethiopia and Secret Societies pack quickly becomes something even better. Maybe. IDK. You be the judge. It's our first three-parter, folks! Our first MEGASODE. On this episode, we discuss how the game has changed from Civ 2 to Civ 6, military positioning, opening strategies, Apocalypse Mode and Soothsayers, the meta love for Simon Bolivar VS the meta hate for Tamar, how to deal with barbarians, Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, The Society for Creative Anachronism, Rome, and spearmen. We talk about spearmen far too much. Anyway. Parts 2 and 3 coming soon! Thanks to Pendin for giving me his time not only today but tomorrow as well! Part 2 will be a deep dive into The Persona Pack and Ethiopia. Part 3 will cover the Secret Societies game mode, the Diplomatic Quarter, and the associated balance changes also released with the update. Mainly about witches: Reginald Scott's skepticism, James's motivated belief in them, the King's touch, the relation of witches to the soothsayer in A&C (vs. the one in JC), and some attention (again, as in other courses) to Dan Decker's Anatomy of a Screenplay and the insights it affords into Shakespeare's construction of scenes: the way soothsayers and messengers are similar and the way they differ. At the end a brief consideration of what De Quincey means by sympathy.

Very ambitious people are also insecure people and as they rise higher in their profession the stakes become higher. The higher the stakes, higher is the insecurity and hence the brain seeks a pillar of support about the future. Soothsayers provide such support by stressing on fate. In this podcast, Dr. Rajvanshi says that we should believe in ourselves, Not astrologers or soothsayers and why. The transcript of this podcast can be found at: https://nariphaltan.org/soothsayers.pdf
(S05E02) "TRESPASSERS" - Who haunts the park talking to plants? Ivy flusters Bruce as she makes an advance. Can Jim and Harv save kids from Soothsayers? It seems so at first, but there are deeper layers. Will Mother help you? She’ll help you die. Are teeth the secret to her Mother's Meat Pies? The government sucks, most of all their dispatchers, forcing our heroes to become the “Trespassers.”
Trespassers saw our heroes crossing lines to save what was dear to them. Jim and Harvey had to journey to save the children. Bruce had to journey to find a cure for Selina. Even Riddler made a journey to find himself. But will their trespassing hurt them in the long run? Trespassers in the Dark Zone: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: FOX Jim and Harvey learn that the kid walked from the dark zone of Gotham. Kids are being taken and forced to tunnel. The mainland will not help or resupply the GCPD and tells Jim to stand down. Jim will not have it. He needs supplies. He goes to the Siren club and Barbara is furious. She clears out the club. She says Jim didn't do anything when Penguin killed Tabitha. Jim says he took him down. She says he just re-cripled him. She gives Jim his pick of vehicles and says Gotham is welcome to take Jim down. The GCPD caravan makes it into the Dark Zone. They are attacked by crossbow arrows and molotov cocktails. Meanwhile the leader of the Soothsayers, Sykes, is mad at an older kid, Gabriel, because he didn't tell about the escape. They are trying to tunnel out of Gotham for supplies so they can run the city. Gabriel says they are hungry and exhausted. Sykes offers him his mask and tells him to take the Smoke. It will make him strong and even see the future. Gabriel refuses and is about to be shot when the GCPD show up. Sykes and the men go out and are surrounded. Jim frees the kids and gets them loaded up, but a firefight breaks out. Most of the trucks get away, but Jim, Harvey, Gabriel, and 2 others have to escape on foot. They seek refuge in an old hotel. Jim goes to check out the upstairs and sends Harvey to the basement. Harvey finds trays of rings, teeth and valuables. Then he sees a body burning in the furnace and a tray of fingers with rings still on them. Mother attacks him and he runs upstairs. Jim finds a boy upstairs. He says a ghost found him after his parents were killed. She was nice at first, but can be mean. She wants to be called Mother. Harvey comes up and the boy sends them into a room. He locks them in to be knocked out by lights and then killed. Mother comes in and a fight ensues. Harvey knocks out a window and Jim questions her. She escapes and they grab the kids and leave. They are about to leave when the Soothsayers and the other gang (who are painted like skeletons) trap them. They both want Jim's head for the Penguin's reward. Jim is down to 2 bullets and uses one to take out the Skeleton leader. Things look bad for the good guys, when a monster truck with a machine gun mows down both gangs. Babs has come to the rescue. Jim uses his last bullet to save her from Sykes. She wants to team up to kill Penguin. They table it and take the kids to the place Lucius Fox set up. it is a 250 rooms with everything. Once the kids came people from all over the city have come to the Haven. Jim is their savior. Babs leaves saying they are not even and will talk later. Trespassers in the Park: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: FOX Bruce is seeking The Witch and he finds the right spot in Robinson Park. The place is overgrown with plants. He enters the building and finds it covered in plant growth. He also sees the plants eating dead bodies. Some men come after him. They have captured The Witch and have sent for others. People came to her for help and she killed them. She speaks to the plants and they do her bidding. But they captured her in a room with no light, no water, and salt on the ground. Bruce says he needs 5 min. with her to find out what happened to his brother. They let him in. Bruce finds Ivy there. She says the park's plants are alive and talk with her. He says he needs her help to heal a friend. She knows of a seed in the park that can heal, but needs to get out. Bruce takes her out and is trying to talk with the men, when she kills them all. She is feeding the park dead people and watching what grows. Bruce says the seed is for Selina. Ivy rejects him, because of what Selina did by destroying the Lazarus Water. But Bruce shows he is growing up and wise. He calls her out. She digs up the seed and says it will fuse the nerves and cartilage in Selina, if she is strong enough. But it will permanently change her. Letting the darker angels out. Bruce hurries back to the hospital. Alfred says Selina has not spoken. Bruce shares that the seed is from Ivy and Alfred cautions him. Selina says she wants to die and if Ivy does it so be it. She takes the seed and then talks about how she took Ivy under her wing. She cared for her and will always see her as that little kid. The seed takes hold and she begins to seize. Later the doctor says her fever shot up and her white blood cell count went off the charts. After 2 hours she stabilized. She still had pain, but was OK. Bruce and Alfred are about to leave, when Bruce notices Ivy gone. She is out of bed and walking. She says she feels better than before. As Bruce hugs her, her eyes go dark green and change to the iris' of a cat. Trespassers in a Turf War: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: FOX The Riddler is still not in full control. He locked himself down with chains and locks before bed. He wakes up still chained and is so happy. But as he is taking a leak he hears mumbling in the shower. He looks and says it is a hallucination. But the mumbling continues. Tank, a member of the Street Demonz, is chained up in his tub. Looks like Ed got out after all and tortured Tank for info. Riddler has to do the same to get that same info. Ed was looking for the Demonz secret hide out and if their leader would be there. Riddler and Tank go and find the place quiet. All of the people there are dead, including the gang leader. On the wall is graffiti saying "Penguin was here." Looks like Ed wants to start a turf war between the two gangs. Riddler is still in the dark and does not know what Ed wants. Closing Thoughts: Trespassers was an interesting episode, but slower. It was a set up episode, but Trespassers moved several stories along. The changes to Selina will be explored next week, but are frightening. Ivy is crazy and powerful. Ed seems to be causing a turf war so he can take over, but will Riddler let him? Jim is being set up to be a savior. The mainland wants him to be a symbol of hope to Gotham, but Penguin might make him a martyr. I hope Trespassers was our only slower ep of the season. We will see. News: Penguin, Our Hero: With the creation of Haven as a safe place for refugees, Gordon hopes to stop the gang fighting in Gotham. Meanwhile, Selina is determined to find Jeremiah (guest star Cameron Monaghan) and she convinces Bruce to help her. Then, Penguin goes to Haven to reclaim his staff in the all-new “Penguin, Our Hero” episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, Jan. 17 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. For the past two seasons, former Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm writer David Mandel has been showrunning HBO's Veep. And while the show can have eerie parallels to reality, Mandel tells us that more often than not, it's real life that ends up imitating Veep.

There are different types of spiritual vision (also called clairvoyance or visions), as symbolized in the Bible and the Hebrew letters. This lecture explains the difference between positive and negative awakening, of learning to perceive with the free consciousness (the way of the Prophets) rather than the consciousness trapped within ego (Soothsayers and Diviners). Lecture quote: "Soothsayers are intellectual Kabbalists, whereas Prophets are intuitive Kabbalists. In this lecture we are going to explain the root of both. The soothsayers are black magicians, sorcerers, diviners (mediums, channelers). Yet, the Prophets are the Avatars, the Apostles. Thus, we have to know the difference, and understand how to polarize ourselves with the positive aspect, or what we call clairvoyance." This is a lecture from the free online course Prophecies of the Days to Come. Course Description: Everyone has heard about the Mayan prophecies, the Apocalypse of Revelation, and perhaps about the Purification Day of the Hopi. All religions have prophesies of great changes coming for humanity, but few know what to do about it. Learn about the future of our planet Earth, and how to prepare yourself today. "And I saw a new οὐρανός [ouranos, heaven] and a new γῆ [gē, earth]: for the πρῶτος οὐρανός [prōtos ouranos, first heaven] and the πρῶτος γῆ [prōtos gē, first earth] were passed away; and there was no more θάλασσα [thalassa, ocean]. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God [is] with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, [and be] their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his θεός [theos, God], and he shall be my υἱός [huios, child, son]. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." - Revelation 21
The Oracle of Apollo at Delphi, Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce. Soothsayers and fortune tellers of world renown. All made uncanny predictions that have seemed to come true with startling accuracy. In modern times it is difficult for most people to name a source that has given us accurate predictions of the future as those we have gotten in the past. But, is it possible that we could Place Homer Simpson in the ranks of great prognosticators? Currently the longest running scripted show ever to air, The Simpsons have a permanent seat in global pop culture. During its time on the air the show has given the world countless jokes and a number of wild and entertaining plot lines. Recently though, some viewers have begun to remark on the curiously high number of accurate predictions the show has included in their writing. The Apple Watch, Trump for President, The Higgs Boson particle, and many more events of recent times all seem to have been shown to have been included in jokes or plots of the long running comedy show long before they actually came to pass.
