This week we talk about the life and legacy of Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission. Joining us is Jim Hansen, who wrote the book First Man and served as a consultant on the film, along with HATM space expert Kevin Rusnak. We talk about the Armstrong's inward journey into outer space, his relationships with his fellow astronauts, and the role his wife Janet played in Armstrong's journey. We also get some inside details on the making of the film, including Ryan Gosling and Damien Chazelle's work to get this movie made. This is a podcast on NASA, Neil Armstrong, and an absolutely brilliant film unlike any you've heard before.About our guests:James R. Hansen is a professor emeritus of history at Auburn University. A former historian for NASA, Hansen is the author of twelve books on the history of aerospace and a two-time nominee for the Pulitzer Prize in History. His 1995 book Spaceflight Revolution was nominated for the Pulitzer by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the only time NASA ever nominated a book for the prize. He serves as coproducer for the motion picture First Man, which is based on his New York Times bestselling biography of Neil Armstrong. Kevin J. Rusnak is the Chief Historian of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center History Office, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, in Dayton, Ohio. He is responsible for leading the professional research, collection, preservation, analysis, writing, and dissemination of AFLCMC's history and heritage to the organization's leadership and workforce, as well as to a public audience.Mr. Rusnak graduated with a degree in History from the University of Dayton, Ohio, in 1995, and subsequently entered the History of Technology graduate program at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia. His thesis focused on the production of B-29 bombers in Marietta, Georgia, during World War II, while his dissertation explored the development of Air Force and NASA pressure suits and space suits from the 1930s through the 1960s. He spent over four years as a historian at the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, where he researched and interviewed dozens of pioneering engineers, managers, and astronauts from the early years of human spaceflight.Mr. Rusnak joined the Air Force History and Museums program in 2002 as the Senior Historian for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson AFB. Over the next 18 years, he researched and wrote numerous annual histories, biographies, reports, heritage products, and special studies. In 2017, he was the primary author for AFRL's award-winning 100-year history compendium, Aiming Higher: A Century of Research in Science and Technology by the Air Force Research Laboratory and its Predecessors, as well as for its companion photo essay volume. He also pioneered AFRL's leveraging of history on modern platforms, such as social media, to provide a broader audience with access to AFRL's significant legacy.

In 1986, Allan McDonald was the head of the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor program at Morton Thiokol, the company that built the rocket boosters for NASA's Challenger space shuttle. Allan warned NASA management that the Space Shuttle Challenger was at risk of exploding. They didn't listen and the world watched the disaster unfold on their TV screens. There's a fine balance between getting things done and getting them done the right way. Every business has deadlines, technical hurdles, and contractual pressures to consider. But what happens when you create an environment that prevents people from sharing ideas and concerns?James R. Hansen, author of Truth, Lies and O-Rings: Inside the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster, tells Allan's story, and Jisha Dymond, OneTrust's Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, explains how NASA's workplace culture contributed to the disaster.

Author James R. Hansen is the author of the only official biography on Neil Armstrong, First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong. James' book has now been adapted into the feature film First Man, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Damien Chazelle. James Hansen's book paints a complete picture of one of America's largest icons. It chronicles Armstrong's career, as well as some of his lesser known personal struggles. James drops in the News Director's Office to discuss these topics, as well as the Apollo 11 mission, the past, present and future of astronautics, and the story behind how he was able to get unprecedented access to the notoriously private Neil Armstrong.

Inspired by its feature role in First Man, a closer look at the first aircraft to fly into space. In the annotated screenplay for First Man, author Josh Singer was asked “why start with the X-15?” for the gripping opening scene in the movie. His answer was simple: “we fell in love with the aircraft. The fastest and highest flying…ever built…[it] flew well over Mach 6 (4,520 miles per hour) and more than 50 miles high, well outside the sensible atmosphere.” Singer’s collaborator and Neil Armstrong’s official biographer, James R. Hansen, adds a fascinating historical footnote: the eponymous first man “really didn’t enjoy talking about the Moon landing, probably because that was all anyone ever asked him about. But ask him about the…X-15 and he’d talk a blue streak.” It’s not surprising the famously taciturn pilot-first-astronaut-later Neil Armstrong was a chatterbox when it came to this remarkable aircraft... * * * Listen to the rest by clicking the play button, above. 436-37: Robert Trent Jones Sr. is regarded as the most historically significant golf architect of the 20th century. The fabric of golf in America - possibly the world - is embodied in the extraordinary career of Robert Trent Jones in golf course design. In this abbreviated conversation with New York Times bestselling author and internationally distinguished historian James R. Hansen, Hansen shares the compelling life story of the man who designed or redesigned a staggering 400+ courses spread over 43 U.S. states and 27 other nations, including instantly recognizable names as Spyglass Hill in California, and Ballybunion (New Course) in Ireland. James R. Hansen is a Professor of History at Auburn University in Alabama, a lifelong golfer, and his first book in 2005 "First Man" is the only authorized biography of astronaut Neil Armstrong. The book is available in hardcopy or ebook versions in our Golfers’Mart book section at GolfSmarter.com
Mountains, rivers, and beaches challenge golfers who play Alabama's extensive trail of championship golf courses designed by eminent American golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Join us as James R. Hansen presents “The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.” This ArchiTreats: Food for Thought presentation was held at the Alabama Department of Archives and History. Hansen will use a handsomely illustrated slide presentation to examine the major architectural design principles built into the Trail. This array of courses built since the late 1980s at 11 sites across the state are part of a massive financial investment and economic development project sponsored by the Retirement Systems of Alabama. Hansen will discuss the Trail courses as reflections of Jones' personal philosophy, and review the extraordinary golf courses that are as demanding as they are picturesque. Hansen is Professor of History and director of the Honors College at Auburn University. An expert in aerospace history for the past 26 years, he has written books and articles about the history of science and technology. His most recent book, First Man (Simon & Schuster, 2005), the first and only authorized biography of Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, has won numerous awards. Although most of his scholarly work has dealt with aerospace history, Hansen has also made his mark on the field of golf course history. He is currently working on the authorized biography of Robert Trent Jones, as well as a book on golf in Alabama. This ArchiTreats presentation is one in a series of monthly third-Thursday free lectures presented by the Alabama Department of Archives and History. The public is invited to bring a sack lunch and enjoy a bit of Alabama history. Coffee and tea will be provided by the Friends of the Alabama Archives.
