We lead off this week's podcast with a detailed discussion of what works and what doesn't work in Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi satire 'Mickey 17.' On the one hand, it's a Bong Joon-ho movie, his first feature since winning the Oscar for 'Parasite.' This film, says Stephen Garrett, is well on the spectrum with his other over-the-top sci-fi satires, 'Snowpiercer' and 'Okja.' It's a big swing. Neal Pollack really disliked Mark Ruffalo's villain performance, and really didn't care for the excessive voiceover by Robert Pattison, though he agrees with Stephen that Pattinson carries the movie as Mickey, a poor schmuck in the future who allows himself to become a corporate clone slave. This movie is the definition of a "March release," somewhere between Oscar bait and summer blockbuster. They don't always hit.Daredevil is on Disney+ now, but this is no Disney-friendly show. 'Daredevil: Born Again' is the most violent and brutal content the Marvel Cinematic Universe has yet produced, which is actually completely necessary. Daredevil is a violent character, trying to protect a violent city. Scott Gold joins Neal to break down all that's good about 'Born Again,' which is a lot, but in particular they single out Charlie Cox, as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and Vincent D'Onofrio, once again owning his role as Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin. Last week, Variety published an article that laid out a behind the scenes look at growing issues and long term concerns at Marvel Studios and Disney regarding the present and future of the MCU. If you follow this show, you are likely up on many of these points but here are a few that caught our eye. This week's new MCU entry The Marvels had several behind the scenes issues. The budget for the film was $250 million dollars and is tracking for a low opening weekend as we've discussed previously. Lengthy reshoots were needed to bring the film together and director Nia DaCosta also relocated and started working on another project during post-production, which is uncommon in Hollywood, especially with a film of this budget size. However, DaCosta recently responded to the article, stating that this was due to delays in The Marvels release date and was not a controversial move with the studio. Many of the recent VFX issues are attributed to poor script writing and planning. VFX artists report that they are asked to pivot sometimes suddenly to correct or add VFX late in production due to script rewrites. For example, the first episode of She-Hulk, which was originally a later episode in the season, was flipped to the first episode and ended up costing $25 million dollars for that single episode due to the rewrite. Blade continues to have serious script issues. The script has been rewritten multiple times and lead actor Mahershala Ali nearly left the project on multiple occasions. One rewrite of the script was described as "female-centric, Blade relegated to the fourth lead, and full of life lessons." Marvel is still looking to make the film, but "on a budget of less than $100 million dollars." Marvel Studios has had talks about bringing back the original six Avengers actors for a new Avengers film to revive excitement in the franchise, despite the deaths of Iron Man and Black Widow. And now there are rumors that Robert Downey, Jr. has agreed to another film. Marvel is still undecided about how to handle the future of Jonathan Majors in the MCU. Discussions have ranged from recasting him to pivoting away from Kang the Conqueror entirely to another villain such as Doctor Victor Von Doom. With Majors' case now going to trial and with the writer's strike preventing script rewrites for so long, the studio has yet to commit to a path forward. The Creative Artists Agency (CAA) dropped Majors pre-arrest due to "brutal conduct," which seems to indicate that Marvel Studios might want to move on from him, regardless of the legal situation. There is still optimism around the future of Marvel Studios, but certain changes in the formula are clearly needed. In more Marvel news, the franchise giant is venturing into more mature territory with Echo, which unveiled a moody and violent trailer last Friday. The new series will be the MCU's first TV-MA rating and the first to debut simultaneously on Disney+ and sister streaming service Hulu. Both Charlie Cox and Vincent D'ONofrio will appear in the show starring as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fiske/Kingpin, respectively. Star Alaqua Cox will reprise her Hawkeye role as Maya Lopez/Echo. Also of note, Echo will premiere under a new banner called Marvel Spotlight; complete with a new intro scored by Oscar winning composer Michael Giacchino and a new logo. This new sub-category of Marvel will focus on standalone properties versus series and movies that connect to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Spotlight gets its name from an anthology comic book series first introduced by Marvel in 1971, which featured new characters that readers didn't have to fully commit to over several issues. Not only does the report detail all three seasons of his Netflix adventures, but it also mentions that "Sometime later, Matt was hired as an attorney to defend Peter Parker."   Here's the excerpt of the important part:   Soon after, Matt attended the funeral for Father Lantom, where he made peace with Sister Maggie. Now in a better state of mind than he had been in quite a while, Matt fully reconciled with Karen and Foggy and the three of them discussed the idea of reforming their law firm with Karen now as the firm's lead investigator and third partner.   Sometime later, Matt was hired as an attorney to defend Peter Parker, as Peter had been publicly outed as Spider-Man and accused of Mysterio's murder. Though Peter was legally cleared of any wrongdoing, Matt warned him he'd still have to face the court of public opinion and advised Harold “Happy” Hogan to hire a good lawyer. As if on cue, a protestor threw a brick through the window of the Parkers' apartment in support of Mysterio. Fortunately, due to his heightened senses, Matt was able to catch the brick before it hurt anyone inside. When Peter asked him how he was able to do that, Matt claimed it was because he was a really good lawyer and left it at that.   Marvel's confirmation that Murdock became Peter Parker's lawyer "Sometime later" than the dramatic ending of Daredevil Season 3 appears to indicate Charlie Cox will continue playing the same version of his character, not a Multiversal Variant as many had speculated.   DISNEY+   Disney+ Removes Stan Lee Tribute From Marvel Netflix Show https://thedirect.com/article/marvel-stan-lee-tribute-disney-netflix-show A tribute to Stan Lee has been removed from The Punisher's second season finale, which was released in January 2019. The "In Loving Memory of Stan Lee" tribute is now replaced with a prolonged black screen before the credits.   The reasoning behind the removal is unknown, but a prevailing theory is that the scene preceding the tribute has Frank Castle gunning down a group of people. In 2015, Marvel and Netflix started us down this path with the first season of Daredevil starring Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. From there we've had series focusing on Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Coulter), and most recently Iron Fist (Finn Jones). These shows have now finally brought together 4 unlikely personalities to team up Avengers style to take on a larger threat. The show is a departure from the four solo series by only being 8 episodes instead of their standard 13. This allows for the telling of a slightly tighter story but also puts some constraints on what the show can do in such a limited time frame. The team takes on a woman named Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver) who controls the evil organization, The Hand. She along with Elektra (Elodie Yung) aka The Black Sky work to further goals while trying to destroy New York City in the process. There are things that worked incredibly well in the series, such as Luke and Danny's budding friendship, but the series is also plagued by rushed writing and lack of quality action beats for certain characters. A valiant effort from Marvel Television, but improvements can be and should be made going forward.
