Jason Teasley, Chae Tate and Mark Radulich review movies currently on streaming services: The Wiz/Purple Rain/DreamGirls Movie Review! First up is The Wiz (1978). Then we move on to Purple Rain (1984). Finally we review Dreamgirls (2006).The Wiz is a 1978 American musical fantasy adventure film directed by Sidney Lumet. Adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical, the film reimagines the classic children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum with an African American cast. Dorothy, a 24-year-old teacher from Harlem, is magically transported to the urban-fantasy Land of Oz. On her travels seeking help from the mysterious Wiz, Dorothy befriends a Scarecrow, a robot called Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion. The Wiz was theatrically released the following year on October 24, 1978, to critical and commercial failure. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, with many unfavorably comparing the film to its source material. Some critics criticized the casting of Ross as Dorothy, while others criticized the direction of Lumet, who was considered a poor choice for directing a musical. Despite its initial failure, critics have become more favorable in recent years, and it has become a cult classic among audiences, Ross's fanbase, Jackson's fanbase and Oz enthusiasts.Purple Rain is a 1984 American romantic rock musical drama film scored by and starring Prince in his acting debut. Developed to showcase his talents, it contains several concert sequences, featuring Prince and his band The Revolution. The film is directed by Albert Magnoli, who later became Prince's manager, from a screenplay by Magnoli and William Blinn. The cast also features Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, Olga Karlatos and Clarence Williams III.It grossed $70.3 million worldwide, against its $7.2 million budget. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. Publications and critics have regarded Purple Rain as one of the greatest musical films. In 2019, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".Dreamgirls is a 2006 American musical drama film written and directed by Bill Condon and jointly produced and released by DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures. Adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name, Dreamgirls is a film à clef, a work of fiction taking strong inspiration from the history of the Motown record label and its superstar act the Supremes. The story follows the history and evolution of American R&B music during the 1960s and 1970s through the eyes of a Detroit girl group known as "The Dreams" and their manipulative record executive. The film adaptation features an ensemble cast, starring Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles and Eddie Murphy with Jennifer Hudson, Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose and Keith Robinson in supporting roles. In addition to the original compositions by composer Henry Krieger and lyricist Tom Eyen, four new songs, composed by Krieger with various lyricists, were added for the film. The film marks the acting debut of Hudson, a former American Idol contestant.Dreamgirls debuted in four special road show engagements starting on December 4, 2006, before its nationwide release on December 15, 2006. With a production budget of $80 million, Dreamgirls is one of the most expensive films to feature a predominant African-American starring cast in American film history. The film received positive reviews from critics, who particularly praised Condon's direction, the soundtrack, costume and production design, and performances of the cast, in particular Hudson and Murphy, and was also a commercial success, grossing $155.4 million worldwide.[4] At the 79th Academy Awards, the film received a leading eight nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress (for Hudson), and Best Sound Mixing. At the 64th Golden Globe Awards, it won three awards, including for the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

This week, look, we know you don't care, but we didn't kill our wife, okay?? We're heading out on the run with a hairy Harrison in search of the one-armed man, as we have a hell of a time with one the great dad thrillers of the 90s. It's 1993's The Fugitive, directed by Andrew Davis, and starring Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones, Sela Ward, Joe Pantoliano, Jeroen Krabbé, Daniel Roebuck, L. Scott Caldwell, Tom Wood, Andreas Katsulas, Julianne Moore and Jane Lynch. Both a perpetual chase action movie as well as a taut conspiracy thriller, the movie is boosted enormously by a lineup of U.S. Marshals in dogged pursuit of our hero that all get to be funny and likeable without ever really feeling like the villains -- such a likeable bunch in fact that they'd all come back for a Ford-less sequel in 1998, four years after Tommy Lee Jones won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Plus: Hayley's hooked on puzzles, and Justin's landed square in the middle of a red hot pro wrestling feud! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our conversation, The Fugitive is currently streaming on Crave and Starz in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Love Guru, Monday Night Raw, The Bikeriders, Azrael: Angel of Death, No One Will Save You, Mission: Impossible, Mission: Impossible 2, The Town, Lost, The Late Shift, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lupin the Third, John Wick, Air Force One, The Departed, The Sixth Sense, Emilia Perez, The Incredible Hulk, The Living Daylights, Soldier of Orange, The Fourth Man, Minority Report, Die Hard, U.S. Marshals, The Matrix, The Simpsons, and Wrongfully Accused, among others. We'll be back next week as we continue to barrel toward January's canon consideration of Ocean's Eleven (2001) at the end of the month, and having already checked in with Bernie Mac to kick off the new year, it's time to recruit the leader of the gang in one of his first leading man movie star roles, the very first film ever released by DreamWorks Pictures: 1997's The Peacemaker, with George Clooney and Nicole Kidman which is sadly not available to stream north of the border currently but can be rented on Cineplex and YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Robert Winfree and Mark Radulich present our Gladiator 2000 Movie Review!Gladiator is a 2000 historical epic film directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson from a story by Franzoni. It stars Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, and Richard Harris. Reduced to slavery, Maximus becomes a gladiator and rises through the ranks of the arena, determined to avenge the murders of his family and the emperor. The screenplay, initially written by Franzoni, was inspired by the 1958 Daniel P. Mannix novel Those About to Die. The script was acquired by DreamWorks Pictures, and Scott signed on to direct the film. Principal photography began in January 1999 and wrapped in May of that year. In this episode, Eric sits down with talented and celebrated artist, illustrator and author… Kadir Nelson! They discuss how he first discovered his artistic inclination and how it had been fostered from an early age; having been mentored by artist and art teacher Michael Morris; his uncle. His educational journey in art — having received a scholarship to study art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and upon graduating with highest honors, how he was summoned by DreamWorks Pictures to create conceptual artwork for Steven Spielberg's Oscar® nominated feature, “Amistad” and the animated feature “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron”. They explore his artistic style and how it evolved through the years. From creating paintings and portraits, to illustration and sculpture! His distinct style of urban realism and how it's reminiscent of turn of the century American painters and historical subjects, often telling a story with his art and emphasizing the heroic. They discuss Nelson's process — what moves him and where he draws inspiration from.  How he's displayed his works at notable exhibitions and in the permanent collections of several esteemed institutions… including the United States House of Representatives, The National Baseball Hall of Fame, the World Trade Center, the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, the National Museum of African American History and Culture and most recently, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. They delve into exciting stories about how Nelson was commissioned by a host of distinguished clients including music legend John McClain; creating works in honor of Marvin Gaye... painting the cover artwork for Michael Jackson's posthumously released album, “Michael” and recording artist Drake's multi-platinum selling album, “Nothing Was the Same”. His experience of creating cover artwork for the New Yorker magazine; that pay tribute to historical and contemporary American figures in New York City and abroad. How Nelson has authored and illustrated several award-winning New York Times Best Selling picture books including, “WE ARE THE SHIP: The Story of Negro League Baseball” and the great honor he had of becoming the recipient of the prestigious Caldecott Medal for illustration..! Guest Bio: Kadir Nelson (b. 1974) is an award-winning American author and artist based in Los Angeles, California. He is the recipient of multiple awards from the Society of Illustrators in New York, including the prestigious Hamilton King Award as well the 2020 recipient of the Caldecott Medal and Coretta Scott King Award for illustration. He adds this to multiple Caldecott Honors, Coretta Scott King Author and Illustrator Awards, New York Times Best Illustrated Book Awards, several NAACP Image Awards and an Olympic Art Bronze medal, among others. Mr. Nelson has also created artwork for a host of distinguished clients, including but not limited to National Geographic, HBO, Nike, Disney, Hennessy, and Sony Music, for whom he painted the cover artwork for Michael Jackson's posthumously released album, “Michael,” which was listed in the Guinness Book of Records® for the largest poster in the world. Nelson's artwork was also featured on the cover of recording artist Drake's multi-platinum selling album, “Nothing Was the Same”; over a dozen commemorative US postage stamps honoring American legends, such as Major League All-Stars Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio, NBA great Wilt Chamberlain, and most recently Motown's Prince of Soul Marvin Gaye, which altogether have sold several million stamps. Nelson's primarily figurative paintings and sculptures focus on historical narratives and heroic subjects in American culture and are often informed by the Old Masters like Ingres, Michelangelo, Hopper, and Tanner. His sumptuous settings and characters, rich palette, and realistic, yet painterly technique speaks to both modern urban realism and masterly works of turn-of-the century American painters.

Hey all! And welcome back to another episode of The Neurodivergent Polyamorist Podcast! In this episode, we look at hierarchies as they apply to relationships of all kinds - platonic, romantic, polyam, and mono. The prevailing wisdom in the polyam community after all is that hierarchies are bad, and while we're certainly not generally fans of them ourselves, we have both also found many moments in our own lives where the reality hasn't been quite so black and white. As such, we wanted to explore this from a more nuanced perspective! So if that sounds like something that interests you, sit back, put your headphones on, relax, and click the 'Play' button! Lighting designer and owner of Images by Lighting Ray Thompson is here today to talk about storytelling with lighting for events and designing lighting for lux weddings. He has over 30 years of experience and an amazing passion for creative design. He also pioneered the modern event lighting industry. His company has created the lighting for events at major corporations like Adobe, Taco Bell, Gillette, NFL Super Bowl and many more. He has also been involved in premieres and events for major movies and entertainers like HBO, DreamWorks Pictures, Disney/Buena Vista, Elton John and more. In this episode, Ray shares how he got started and was able to transition his passion into a career and an award-winning company. He also talks about the evolution of lighting, changes in technology, tools smaller designers can use to create amazing lighting, how he finds inspiration and more.   Show Highlights: [00:15] Ray Thompson is one of the true icons in the industry for what he does with lighting design. [00:34] Lighting is critical to telling a story no matter what you're doing. [00:49] Many years ago, Ray began lecturing and educating people about lighting and what can be done with lighting and where events were going. [01:28] When Ray was a kid, he was always good with science and math. His dad owned a vending machine company, and Ray had access to the broken machines, so he would create lighting installations in his bedroom. [01:59] He would even sequence lights to music. He wasn't sure how to make a career out of this, so he went into electrical engineering. [02:55] He moved to LA and was an electrical engineer for Hughes Aircraft. [03:11] While working at Hughes Aircraft, Ray had created some lighting sculptures in his apartment, which a well-known event professional saw and he tells the story of how that led to building a clientele. [04:01] Ray shares how one of his first big breaks came from Allan Carr. [05:26] Once props and scenery became decorations for parties, lighting also became a natural element. [06:19] Lighting is a dance from the moment you enter an event. Light creates an experience and storyline through color, texture, and intensity. [07:47] Ray is very spiritual. He loves color and the study of chakra and color on your being. [11:36] Ray directs the events, and lights can be used to create total theater for events. [14:33] We discuss Ray's concept of the relation between lighting and “the choreography of emotion.” [16:31] Ray likes to be involved early on in the design process and discusses why. [16:56] We learn the behind the scenes process behind a project from proposal to end design.   [22:41] Messaging for brands like Tesla involves a unique lighting design approach for a product reveal. [23:38] Ray tells the story behind designing the lighting for the wedding for a king in Dubai. [27:09] We get to hear about lighting projects such as the Governor's Ball for the Emmys, the Oscars Green Room, the Super Bowl, and studio and movie premieres. [31:00] He has worked with very high-end entertainers from Elton John to Katy Perry. [32:19] Ray shares his secrets for production efficiency and profitability that he's learned over the years. [35:11] Ray shares how lighting technology has evolved since he began in the industry. [38:49] LED screens will get cheaper and cheaper for video walls. [39:24] Ray reveals the best way for industry professionals to work with lighting designers. [40:22] Battery packed pin spots and battery packed uplights are great cost-effective and simple ways for planners and designers to notch things up a level. [41:07] Going to concerts is inspiration and relaxation for Ray. He also gets inspired by the very creative producers that he works with. [42:42] Andy thought the video screens and the lighting at the Ed Sheeran concert were amazing. [43:42] Ray loves what he does.   LINKS & RESOURCES: The Wedding Biz The Wedding Biz The Wedding Biz on Instagram The Wedding Biz on Facebook   Images By Lighting Images by Lighting Images by Lighting on Instagram Images by Lighting on Facebook @images_lighting on Twitter   Mentioned By Ray Freedom Par by Chauvet FUEL Lighting Systems Alan Carr   Colin Cowie & His Interview On The Wedding Biz: Colin Cowie Lifestyle Colin Cowie: Part 1 Creating Groundbreaking Luxury Experiences Colin Cowie: Part 2 Creating Groundbreaking Luxury Experiences   David Beahm & His Interview On The Wedding Biz: David Beahm David Beahm: Risk & Synchronicity   This episode is sponsored by Kushner Entertainment www.kushnerentertainment.com.

The film features the voices of Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, Jennifer Lopez, Sylvester Stallone, Christopher Walken, Dan Aykroyd, Anne Bancroft, Danny Glover and Gene Hackman. Some of the main characters share facial similarities with the actors who voice them.[10] Antz was the first film from DreamWorks Animation, and the third feature-length computer-animated film after Disney and Pixar's Toy Story (1995) and NDR Filmes's Cassiopeia (1996). During its production, a public feud erupted between DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Steve Jobs and John Lasseter of Pixar, due to the production of their similar film A Bug's Life, which was released a month later. This only worsened when Disney refused to avoid competition with DreamWorks' intended first animated release, The Prince of Egypt (1998). Antz premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 19, 1998,[11] and was released theatrically in the United States on October 2, 1998, by DreamWorks Pictures. It grossed $171.8 million worldwide on a budget of $42–105 million. The film received positive reviews, with critics praising the voice cast, animation, humor, and its appeal towards adults.[12]

The Island | Ewan McGregor | Scarlett Johansson | Michael Clarke Duncan | Michael Bay | [2005] Join Ruben and The Russian as they digest this 2005 Sci-Fi classic, directed by Michael Bay and starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. The Island is a 2005 American science fiction thriller film directed and co-produced by Michael Bay. It stars Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Djimon Hounsou, Sean Bean, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Steve Buscemi. The film is about Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor), who struggles to fit into the highly structured world in which he lives, isolated in a compound, and the series of events that unfold when he questions how truthful that world is. After Lincoln learns the compound inhabitants are clones used for organ harvesting as well as surrogates for wealthy people in the outside world, he attempts to escape with Jordan Two Delta (Scarlett Johansson) and expose the illegal cloning movement. Principal photography for The Island began on Sunday, October 24, 2004. The ruined buildings where Jordan and Lincoln sleep after leaving the subterranean compound are in Rhyolite, Nevada. The city parts were shot in Detroit, Michigan, with Michigan Central Station one of the notable locations. Other portions of the film were shot in the Coachella Valley, California The Island has been described as a pastiche of "escape-from-dystopia" science fiction films of the 1960s and 1970s, such as Fahrenheit 451, THX 1138, Parts: The Clonus Horror, and Logan's Run. The Island cost $126 million to produce. The original score was composed by Steve Jablonsky, who went on to score Bay's further works. It opened on July 22, 2005, by DreamWorks Pictures in North America and internationally by Warner Bros. Pictures, to mixed reviews, earning $36 million at the United States box office and $127 million overseas for a $162 million worldwide total. #TheIsland #ScarlettJohansson #EwanMcGregor #MichaelBay #DjimonHounsou #SeanBean #MichaelClarkeDuncan #SteveBuscemi #KimCoates #EthanPhillips #TheIsland2005 #MauroFiore #PaulRubell #ChristianWagner #RogerBarton #JohnMurray #SteveJablonsky #AlexKurtzman #RobertoOrci #CaspianTredwellOwen #IanBryce #WalterParkes #DreamWorksPictures #WarnerBrosPictures #ParkesMacDonaldProductions #MovieByte #MovieBytePodcast #JustChillinEntertainment --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Us: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/moviebytepod... Sorry this is sounding harsher than I mean it - you gotta understand, we just watched this film, recording a full hour talking about it, then had to spend time editing that conversation, so we've been down here way too long.Evolution is a 2001 American comic (supposedly) science (supposedly) fiction (thank god) film (debatable) directed by Ivan Reitman. It stars David Duchovny, Orlando Jones, Seann William Scott, Julianne Moore, and Ted Levine. It was released by DreamWorks Pictures in the United States and by Columbia Pictures internationally. The plot of the film follows college professor Ira Kane (Duchovny) and geologist Harry Block (Jones), who investigate a meteorite crash in Arizona. They discover that the meteorite harbors extraterrestrial lifeforms, which are evolving very quickly into large, diverse and outlandish creatures.Subscribe and rate us wherever you found us! The Classic Film: Rear Window (1954) "A wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder” (IMDb.com). We're back to the Hitchcock classics with one of the holy trinity (according to Chris), a suspenseful thriller that asks, "Will she change for him?" The Modern Film: Disturbia (2007) "A teen living under house arrest becomes convinced his neighbor is a serial killer” (IMDb.com). A blatant rip-off of the Rear Window concept (along with three other movies we've covered on the show), Disturbia may not wow, but it's pretty good teen fare at the very least. Chris & Kelsey will end up either dead or insane! Thanks for the recommendation, Alex! The Classic Film: The Crazies (1973) "A biological weapon gone awry is only the start of problems in the little town of Evan's City, Pennsylvania. Bouts of insanity in the populace are leading to murder and rioting until the US Army turns up - and things really start going to hell” (IMDb.com). Feeling like a quintessential low-budget Romero flick, The Crazies is a raw and affecting story of survival. The Modern Film: The Crazies (2010) "As a toxin begins to turn the residents of Ogden Marsh, Iowa, into violent psychopaths, sheriff David Dutton tries to make sense of the situation while he, his wife, and two other unaffected townspeople band together in a fight for survival” (IMDb.com). It may be rare, but sometimes a horror remake is actually good. This is the case with The Crazies' 2010 remake, which does something completely different from the original and does it pretty well. This time, we review the robotic crime thriller Ghost in the Shell movie (2017) and in today's episode we explore if this version of Tokyo exists in an alternate reality, how much does this film borrow from Blade Runner, and did Ghost in the Shell really start the conversation of “whitewashing” in Hollywood? Let's dig in…. Ghost in the Shell movie cast Directed by Rupert Sanders: Prior to taking on Ghost in the Shell, Sanders was well-known for directing Snow White and the Huntsmen which was a darker take on the classic fairy tale starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth. However, Sanders' personal life would be thrown into disarray following leaked photos of him and fellow actress Kristen Stewart carrying on an illicit affair. Scarlett Johansson as Major: Johansson was a well-established star at the time of this film having appeared in multiple films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Margot Robbie passed on this role in order to star as Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe and Johansson signed on for a cool $10 million payday. See our review on the film Her where we discussed Johansson as well. Pilou Asbæk as Batou: Game of Thrones fans will recognize Asbæk after he appeared in the last several seasons of the show, but has mostly appeared in Danish cinema since he came on the scene beginning around 2009. Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet: Binoche has been an acclaimed actress for over 30 years and rose to international prominence following her Academy Award performance in the war epic The English Patient and then alongside Johnny Depp in Chocolat. There's a noted lack of female diversity in the film and Binoche offers a sort of maternal care and identity to Major throughout the film. Michael Carmen Pitt as Kuze: Fans of the show Boardwalk Empire will recognize Pitt following his performance as Jimmy on the show for which he earned numerous award nominations. However, there are times in the film that we forget he's even in the film. There are long stretches where he is not seen and he isn't a constant presence as he is initially feared to be. Also Starring:  “Beat” Takashi Kitano as Aramaki Chin Han as Togusa Peter Ferdinando as Cutter Ghost in the Shell Manga: From the Page to the Screen Ghost in the Shell is actually the English name for a Japanese manga and entertainment franchise that was originally known as Mobile Armored Riot Police. The manga series ran for a year and a half during 1989 to the near end of 1990. The plot of the manga and the film remain mostly unchanged; an elite police squadron named Section 9 is tasked with hunting down and eliminating cyber criminals in a cyber-punk dystopian version of Japan in the near future. The top cop in this unit is Major Motoko Kusanagi was anglicized for the film to Mira Killian, but the original name was kept for the human whose brain is placed into the robotic shell. The English version of the manga didn't make its way to America until 1995 when Dark Horse Comics published a one volume translation of the manga with an anime adaptation premiering in the same year with a sequel that followed in 2004. Beginning in 2002, a television cartoon was developed consisting of two season and 26 episodes. Much of the imagery showcased in the films and the cartoon do make its way into the film due to Rupert Sanders being a self-proclaimed “mega fan” of the series. In 2008, DreamWorks Pictures and Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to produce a live action film adaptation, but Spielberg would eventually drop out of the production enlisting other producers and filmmakers to eventually bring the manga to the big screen. Margot Robbie was the first choice to play Major, but when she passed on the project, the role was offered to Johansson with the rest of the cast announced in 2016. The casting of Johansson to play Major caused controversy with critics of the film accusing the film of “whitewashing” the manga.

[14:33] We discuss Ray’s concept of the relation between lighting and “the choreography of emotion.” [16:31] Ray likes to be involved early on in the design process and discusses why. [32:19] Ray shares his secrets for production efficiency and profitability that he’s learned over the years. This video needs to be added to the notes. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/l8xwuqffuii8i16/AADzB_5lPGC7YZB9zQe2nW5la/ray%20movie%201.MOV?dl=0 This episode is sponsored by Kushner Entertainment www.kushnerentertainment.com. When we face obstacles in life, do we have a tendency to become "myopic?" i.e. short sighted? Do we focus so much on the obstacles that they become bigger than what they are? Our short sightedness convinces us that instead of facing them head on, we exaggerate their power over us and would rather run away and say to ourselves "there's no other choice!" Jonathan provides a solution for our mypoia and argues that if we endure, there's a life waiting for us that will blow our minds! Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss The Prince of Egypt. After Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen formed DreamWorks Pictures, they had their sights set on developing hit live-action and animated films. Their second animated film after the CG Woody Allen comedy Antz, Prince of Egypt is a 2D animated feature retelling the first part of the story of Moses from the Book of Exodus in the Bible. After accidentally murdering a man, Moses (Val Kilmer) reunites with his blood relatives and returns to the Pharoah (Ralph Fiennes) with a plea to let his people go. Many plagues are unleashed until he gets his way.  Featuring dramatic musical numbers from Stephen Schwartz of Godspell fame, The Prince of Egypt shows an unusual level of maturity for an American animated feature. At times dark, violent, and oppressive, The Prince of Egypt is a great retelling of a classic story revered in religions around the world. The Prince of Egypt is the rare movie that is better than you remembered.  Thrasher enjoys the exploding fungus sci-fi epic Contimation. He also likes the sass of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. Mat caught up with two recent comedies, one decent (Why Me?), the other not (The House). Why Me? has a familiar tale of the girl that goes to college and gets engaged to a tech billionaire, but will his uncouth ways clash with her family. James Franco is great in the lead, and there's even a fun cameo from a legacy rock band at the end.  The House is a flat comedy about an illegal gambling operation in the suburbs. It's the kind of concept that can barely fill a sketch, let alone a movie. Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler really give it their all to little avail.  Ratings for The Prince of Egypt: Mat: Sequel Yes Thrasher: Sequel Yes Follow the show on Twitter @Sequelcast2 Like our Sequelcast 2 Facebook Page The theme song to the Sequelcast is written and performed by Marc with a C. “How can I break into Hollywood or advance in my creative career if there is no set path to follow?” is by far the most common question I receive via e-mail, when I speak at events, or when I teach at USC or online. Whenever someone sends me an email or Facebook message and asks, “Can I buy you coffee and pick your brain?” this is inevitably the big question they seek the answer to. Unlike doctors or lawyers, the path to being a successful film editor, writer, visual effects artist, animator, actor, or any other creative career is not a linear path, but here’s the secret nobody tells you: There are very specific steps you can follow to be successful, but you have to be willing to put in the time and take action consistently. The key is not discovering the path and following it, the key is learning the proper steps to forge your own unique path. In this episode I dive deep into what it really takes to break into or advance in the Hollywood post-production industry with none other than USC professor and former head of the editing track, Norman Hollyn. This is a two hour marathon episode so get comfortable. This was one of the most downloaded and shared 2-part episodes of my former podcast, but I thought it beneficial to combined it into a single episode and feature it as part of the Optimize Yourself program so new people just discovering this show wouldn’t have to dig for it because people have told me firsthand this interview was the difference between them landing a job or not landing it. The advice Norman gives is seriously that universal and that powerful, and it can be applied far beyond jobs in post-production. BONUS: If this episode inspires you to start taking some real action to get where you want to in Hollywood and land your dream job, I have great news because you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. I just released my brand new “Ultimate Guide to ‘Making It’ In Hollywood as a Creative” that is an absolute manifesto on the practical steps you can take to begin forging your own path to success. And if you’re not in Hollywood, trust me when I say that if these steps work here, they’ll work anywhere and apply to any creative field. This guide includes some of the exercises discussed in this episode as well as deeper dives into clarifying your goals, perfecting your craft, and expanding your social network so the right people know you’re awesome at what you do and beg you to work for them. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: Develop your skill set and then build your network of people Consider looking for work and networking your full time job Use online resources, industry magazines, etc How to use Facebook and Twitter to help you make connections Put yourself out there and make yourself valuable to people Make sure you continue to hone your craft and advance your skill set Find out what you don’t know and get good feedback! Should you take free work? People skills and social skills are more important than you think Part of advancing in your career is being able to make choices Re-evaluating your goals is growth Being fiscally responsible will give you more choices and give you the freedom to take work that’s valuable to your career and not necessarily your bank account To be happy it’s important to acknowledge that third circle: Personal needs Write down your intentions and focus -- no matter how many drafts it takes! This week, we hear the untold story of women resistance fighters in Hitler's ghettos.  We also speak with an author about life in Iraq under Saddam Hussein's regime. Of the legions of stories of World War II and the Holocaust that shape our understanding of those history-changing events, one of the most extraordinary has remained hidden: the daring resistance efforts of Jewish women in the ghettos of the Nazi occupations. In the new book The Light of Days: The Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler's Ghettos, Judy Batalion shares the acts of defiance and rebellion of women who saw and acknowledged the truth of their time. Batalion is also the author of White Walls: A Memoir about Motherhood, Daughterhood, and the Mess in Between.  Her essays have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Vogue. Batalion spent 14 years researching her new book, she says The Light of Days stemmed from her childhood and wanting to write about a strong Jewish female. The Light of Days: The Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler's Ghettos is published by William Morrow. The book was picked up by Stephen Spielberg's Amblin Partners. It will be produced as a film under the DreamWorks Pictures label with Batalion as a co-producer. Now, we head to the Middle East to experience life under a different regime.  Inspired by her own experiences stationed in Baghdad during Saddam Hussein's rule, former foreign correspondent Gina Wilkinson's debut novel is told through the eyes of three very different women in Iraq at the turn of the millennium. Wilkinson is an award-winning journalist who has reported for the BBC, NPR, and ABC. Her new book When the Apricots Bloom follows a secretary, an artist, and a diplomat's wife. Each must confront the complexities of trust, friendship, and motherhood under the rule of a dictator and his ruthless secret police. I asked what inspired her to write this story. When the Apricots Bloom, published by Kensington Books. That's our show for this week. Thanks to Tina Renick for production assistance. Our executive producer is Dr. Alan Chartock. Our theme music is Glow in the Dark by Kevin Bartlett. This show is a national production of Northeast Public Radio. Follow us on Twitter @51PercentRadio. Photo courtesy of William Morrow.
