We can find the center of ourselves in a place where grace offers comfort, care, love and the ability to hold space for ourselves as well as others. A meditation on grace from Nearly Mindful and Janet Fouts.
I can certainly say that I KNOW when I'm flirting. I also know when I'm not. However, I and many women I know, have been accused of flirting when we are simply being nice/kind/friendly. Even being told we are "too friendly" (Is that a thing and what does it mean?). I have a male friend who oozes charm and admits it is often mistaken as flirting. Who gets to decide if something is flirting? Is it body language? Tone? Pheromones? I am sure there are bodies of university research on the subject but I wanted to know what regular people thought. What a fun conversation Daisy Cedeño MS, Janet Fouts, Wayne Buckhanan, PhD and I had. What do you think about flirting? What is it and who decides if something is or is not flirting? My guest today, Janet Fouts, is an expert on taking care of ourselves and others. Janet and I talked about her new book, Micro Dosed Mindfulness (the book isn't out yet, but soon!), and how we can apply small techniques throughout our day to increase our awareness, lower our stress and increase our productivity. Unlike many of my guests, Janet and I did not meet on LinkedIn. I was introduced to Janet via a podcast placement agency, and I'm so glad that I've had the opportunity to get to know her. Janet is a calm presence, but also a tell it how it is person, which I love. I want to stress here that when we talk about mindfulness during this show that you don't need to be a yogi or meditation expert to apply mindfulness. Just taking a breath before taking a phone call or having an important meeting can make a big difference in how that call or presentation goes. And by stacking up these moments of mindfulness, you can have a positive impact on your work and life. Here's more about Janet: An accomplished entrepreneur, business leader, executive coach, speaker, and corporate trainer, Janet Fouts skillfully works at the nexus of tech, neuroscience, and mindfulness. She believes deeply in the value of self-awareness and emotionally intelligent communication at all levels of business. Her focus is on creating and executing effective human-centric strategies for leadership and relationship management which opens the door for clients to live a more fulfilling life at work and at home. It's our pleasure to introduce you to Janet Fouts. Janet is the author of seven books, including “When Life Hits the Fan – A Guide to Self-care While Caring for Others” and the host of the “Mindful Social” where she interviews thought leaders. She has also spoken at conferences around the world, including at TEDx. In this interview, Janet and I are going to discuss: “How to Understand and Manage the Challenges of Remote Leadership”
As the song says, "Under Pressure". That is what many workers and leaders are feeling. Especially those in remote working situations. The problem is many people just keep pushing forward without sharing the pressure or burnout and then it just explodes. Or leads to quitting or worse, it just simmers underneath the surface and it affects performance. Workplace burnout is real. Janet Fouts, author and consultant left the agency she founded due to the burnout. She now helps organizations see the stress, deal with it and avoid the burnout phase through mindfulness and pausing to see what really is happening. This is not about allowing process or performance to fall off, it is about fixing the root cause of the stress in order to accelerate. Fascinating conversation. I know you will enjoy it. don't forget to subscribe, share and rate the show!! All of this is true...::Emotional intelligence allows you to de-identify with emotions in order to feel, understand and operate with them at the same time. ::Intense emotions make us self-absorbed and emotional intelligence brings our awareness to others. ::There are simple shifts you can make in how you communicate (with others and yourself) to help you manage high-pressure situations. ::Multitasking is actually just monotasking with unfocused attention. How to give your fullest attention to each task you’re doing when there are piles of tasks to juggle simultaneously. ::There are times when open awareness Is useful and times when is it not. It’s important to understand how to be mindful while also allowing unconscious processes to occur. ::You can hack "amygdala hijack" (when the part of our brain that makes us run away or bite things takes over our mental processes) to be able to meet intense situations head on. ::Being too giving to those that need care can compromise your ability to be a caregiver. “Mindful caregiving” is essential for preventing burnout, misery and deteriorating health. Janet Fouts new book “When Life Hits the Fan – A Mindful Guide to Caring for Yourself While Caring for Others,” is based on her own experience as a family caregiver and the experiences of dozens of caregivers she interviewed for the book. The book brings to life stories and the challenges faced by those who manage or assist in care for their loved ones. Janet includes exercises taken from her training in emotional intelligence, mindfulness, and positive psychology to help us understand what is causing us to respond in certain ways, and how to build resilience as well as compassion for ourselves and others. I think Janet would be an amazing guest on your show. She’s had podcasts of her own since 2000 and her most recent show, “Mindful Social” is on Spreaker https://www.spreaker. com/user/jfouts A bit more about Janet. She’s CEO of Tatu Digital Media, a San Jose digital marketing agency, and author of 6 books on that subject. I'm thrilled to have Janet Fouts join us to share tips and strategies to help you apply the technique of mindfulness into your daily routine. As a care partner for someone with dementia, you know how consuming and overwhelming it can be, so it's extremely important that you find ways to release the stress and focus your awareness on the moment. This will not only benefit your well-being but it will also help you to maximize the good times with your loved one. As Christy Turner said in a past episode, years from now you won't remember the dishes that didn't get washed, but you will remember the time you spent with your loved one. It's very difficult to slow down and remember this, but if you listen to Janet and begin implementing her suggestions, you will see an improvement. Janet is a caregiver and mindfulness coach; working with people to improve self-awareness and be happier in their lives at home and at work. Her journey as a caregiver inspired the transition from a well-respected social media marketer and CEO to mindfulness coaching after discovering the value of mindfulness and emotional intelligence in rescuing her from depression and anxiety. She shares her learnings in her book “When Life Hits the Fan, A Mindful Guide to Caring for Ourselves While Caring for Others."

When asked to summarise her digital marketing tip for 2017 Janet says: “Paying more attention to what people really want instead of pushing out what we think they want. “If we take a mindful approach to our audience, and really look at what it is they’re looking for, and figure out how we can get there. “We use things like Google Trends to find out what they’re looking for, listen to conversations out there, and talk with people instead of talking to them. Janet Fouts is CEO of Tatu Digital Media in Silicon Valley and is also a social media strategist, keynote speaker, trainer, and author. She started an online community in the early ‘90s, and she started her first social media startup in 1996. Her firm belief that social media and community go hand-in-hand has helped propel her business. Janet recently joined AMP UP Your Social Media’s host Glenn Gaudet to discuss marketing automations solutions on social media. “Be mindful while you’re in social. Think about who you’re talking to, who you represent, and be thoughtful and considerate while you’re using social. Talk to users as human beings, not targets.” Janet discusses tips for using the community on social media to propel your business to the next level: Choose connections with appropriate influences. Social media doesn’t work if you don’t do the work. Utilize tools. Choose the right social network.
You probably use some form of social media, whether for personal use or for your organization. Janet Fouts joins the show to explore how mindfulness when it's applied to social media is different than just "doing" social media. Janet, CEO of Tatu Digital Marketing, talks about how just scheduling automated posts without followup engagement can sometimes be detrimental to really letting your followers get to know you as not just a brand but a person. They want to know they're dealing with a real human being. Janet reminds listeners there are ways to take a mindful approach to social media while still being efficient and practical.
What does mindful leadership look like? We know it’s a completely different animal than when many of us were young. Things looked fine when we were in a manufacturing environment, and now all of us are working in idea factories. Now everything is knowledge based, being thoughtful, mindful, and creative. Mindful social leadership is so much more than social media. It’s about active listening and being self aware at this moment. It’s about putting the device down and having a conversation. Today's guests are Janet Fouts and Danny Brown. In fact after Ken came up with the topic for this week's show (actually weeks ago) both guests mentioned the need for disconnecting. Janet mentioned it in a Twitter chat and Danny made a pointed posting about it on Google+ which led to the invitation for each to join us. Let's call this episode "Disconnecting Gracefully". Everyone who has had any presence online for any time knows it can get messy. Businesses have them, people have them, Hollywood types have them, politicians certainly have them. We call them trolls. Some people seem to derive pleasure from bringing others misery. They agree with nothing, hate every service, find fault in every person, business and precept. Sooner or later they take it online and into the public and every comment is an accusation or endictment and every question is an inqisition. So what to do? There comes a time for personal and business when it's time to consider the option of disconnecting and denying that person further access to your other connection. In other words it's time to unfriend or otherwise block.

Mindfulness – everybody hears about it and they have all kinds of ideas of what mindfulness is. A lot of times, they think it's this really complicated thing and that you have to do the whole kung fu thing to be mindful. But you don't have to.On today's episode, Duane carries an inspiring conversation with Janet Fouts, the author of Microdosed Mindfulness. Janet devolved into depression when her partner was diagnosed with cancer. She found it hard to handle things well, considering how she had to take care of her partner while also running her business. As her way of numbing the pain, she began to drink a lot and tried a few drugs. She found it hard to get out of it but she knew she had to stop. She ended up going to a mindfulness-based stress reduction course, a weekend retreat that blew her mind and led her to learn about mindfulness and dive deep into studying, quitting her job, and becoming a teacher.Janet identifies self-judgment as the biggest hurdle of a person's mindfulness journey. When you stop to recognize that judgment, you begin to back away and get centered.Recognize that it's okay to come back to it. That's part of the process. So don't be hard on yourself if you didn't get to meditate today. All you need are microdoses, moments to start living mindfully instead of practicing mindfulness.Once mindfulness dawns on you, you realize it's just about being aware. And when you're aware of the fact that you're not aware, you switch back to being aware again. It's such a simple concept but it can take a long time for some people to get there. When you're in emotional suffering and a lot of pain, your body's telling you that you've got to get out and do something to stop the pain. It may tell you to do so by using drugs, for instance. In those times, sitting with mindfulness can be really challenging, even if it's just 10 seconds. But it can be done!In this episode, you will hear:How mindfulness came into Janet's lifeWhat awareness meansHow to get started with practicing mindfulnessWhat it means when you normalize somethingHow mindfulness shifts your perspectiveThe biggest hurdle of starting a mindfulness journeyWhy you also need to celebrateKey Quotes:[02:45] - "I was convinced that if I just learned to meditate that everything would start to move slower, and I would be able to manage my life and everything would be wonderful."[05:34] - “It's really so simple when it dawns on you that all mindfulness is simply being aware.”[06:08] - “Another word I like to use is ‘notice' - and that's the simplest version of awareness.”[08:53] - “When we're aware, and when we're paying attention, we're such better human beings.”[15:39] - "We just need the microdoses. We just need the moments and pretty soon, we start living mindfully, instead of practicing mindfulness."[18:10] - “There's tons of maladaptive behaviors that we can get into if we want to. But sometimes you really just have to go, ‘Wow,' this really hurts.”[21:08] - "We can actually retrain our brain to be happier, to have more joy simply by recognizing joy more often."Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast?
