Quick, answer the following questions: when was the last time you made an actual post on your socials? when was the last time you shared a post that you cared about to your newsfeed? when was the last time you doom scrolled? when was the last time you saw anger and hatred in a meme or in someone's comment section? when was the last time you felt happy after being on social media?   A couple of months ago I was in a conversation with my friend and client, Lindsy, and we were both talking about how draining it felt to participate in social media.   So I had a realization: if I want a better experience when I'm on social media, I have to take action and be part of the solution.   This means doing more creating, purging the accounts and people that drain me, being active and interactive, and practicing Social Leadership.   Let's commit to listening to this episode and afterward, becoming social leaders, owning the power that we have over our algorithms and experiences online and using it for the good of us all.   Quick Tips for Improving Your Social Media Experience: You get more of what you click on. So stop clicking into click-baity, dumb shit. Unfollow. Accounts, people, trends, platforms. Follow: what brings you joy. Make something. Creating brings more joy than consuming.  Be a human. Engage, look for humanity, uplift, educate.  Implement time limits. Apps, bricks, lockboxes. Think critically.  Connect. with others IRL and with yourself. Ask: why do these little digital boxes have such a hold on me?   Next: practice social leadership: 30-day posting my favorite photos to make Facebook suck less initiative. Encourage others to join in.  Have productive conversations, and encourage connection offline.  Put your phones away when you're in a gathering next time.  Critically ask yourself, how am I contributing to the dumpster fire I'm being served? This is especially important if you are using social to market your business. If you are annoyed/aggrieved and generally questioning your presence on socials, be sure your content you release on behalf of your business meets these standards too.  Give people something to care about, not something to scroll past. Reframing the Psychology of Work: Building Engagement Through Social Leadership

"In the absence of trust, people will disengage. No amount of technology or process can replace the human need for belief and belonging."-Julian StoddThis episode is a must listen for those looking to expand their ideas about leadership, technology, and the psychology of work!In this episode of "Psych Tech @ Work," I welcome Julian Stodd, founder of Sea Salt Learning and prolific author whose work challenges conventional views on leadership, work, and technology, by looking at them through new paradigms.  Our conversation was refreshing because Julian offered thoughtful reframing of my ideas about psychology in the workplace that are worth noting.    In our conversation Julian reframes the way we think about the evolving workplace, focusing on the shift from traditional hierarchical structures to social leadership and distributed power. His perspectives offer a compelling critique of the conventional social contract between organizations and employees, arguing that this contract has been fundamentally broken by modern work dynamics.Julian highlights the role of technology, particularly AI, as a tool that both amplifies and disrupts traditional power dynamics within organizations. He also emphasizes the need for organizations to adapt, not just by automating tasks but by fostering trust, belief, and a sense of belonging to truly engage employees. This conversation is a powerful reminder that organizations must evolve beyond transactional relationships and embrace the social elements that drive real engagement and productivity. Throughout the episode, Julian emphasized the critical balance between formal organizational structures and the informal, social dynamics that truly drive engagement and innovation. He suggested that many organizations over-rely on formal systems—hierarchies, policies, and processes—while underestimating the power of social structures, such as networks of trust, influence, and collaboration.Julian repeatedly showed me a new way to look at my ideas about the psychology of the workplace.  For instance:The Traditional Leadership Model:* I Mention: I spoke about the role of leaders in providing clear direction and overseeing teams to ensure productivity.* Julian's Reframe: Julian challenged this conventional view, arguing that leadership in the modern era should be about social authority rather than formal hierarchy. He explained that leadership is increasingly granted by the community based on trust and belief, not just a title or position, and that successful leaders must earn this trust by engaging meaningfully with their teams. The Psychological Contract Between Employers and Employees:* I Mention: The importance of the traditional idea of the psychological contract as a way to understand the employer-employee relationship, where employees trade their time and skills for compensation and job security.* Julian's Reframe: Julian reframed this concept by stating that the traditional social contract has been broken. He argued that organizations need to move beyond seeing employees as resources or commodities. Instead, they should recognize that people are investing their belief and engagement in return for trust, growth, and belonging. Julian emphasized that organizations must rethink this relationship to thrive in the modern, social age.The Importance of Individual Differences:* I mention: The importance of the concept of individual differences, focusing on the traditional scientific approach that measures and assesses traits like personality, intelligence, and abilities to predict workplace behaviors and outcomes.* Julian's Reframe: Julian suggested a shift away from solely focusing on the science of individual differences as fixed traits to considering individuals as dynamic and adaptable within social systems. He argued that while the science of individual differences is important, it often overlooks the relational and contextual factors that influence behavior. Julian emphasized that people are shaped by their environment, relationships, and the social dynamics they are part of. He proposed that instead of just measuring traits in isolation, organizations should focus on understanding how individuals interact with the system around them and how they can grow and evolve within that system."Take it or Leave it":  Julian and I give our opinions on articles that suggest a declining need for human workers in the workplace of the future.* "AI-Powered Companies with No Employees Coming Soon"* Summary: This article from Sifted discusses the rise of fully autonomous companies that leverage AI agents to run without employees. While the article presents a futuristic view of e-commerce and automation, Julian and Charles critique its narrow focus and overhyped narrative, emphasizing that while AI may automate some functions, people will remain central to innovation and decision-making.* "The Rise of Autonomous Enterprises"Summary: This article from HFS explores how data-driven decision-making and automation are shaping the future of organizations. Julian and Charles discuss the potential for organizations to become more efficient through data governance and AI, but caution that organizations still need human judgment and emotional engagement to make meaningful decisions. In this month's Citizens' Climate Radio episode, host Peterson Toscano and the CCR teams introduce a fresh approach to climate change storytelling by exploring personal stories as metaphors. While these stories are not explicitly about climate change, they reveal truths and perspectives that resonate with our climate work. Join us to discover how personal narratives can enhance and diversify our stories about climate change. You will also learn expert storytelling tips to apply when telling stories about climate change.  For a full transcript and more, visit www.cclusa.org/radio   Using Personal Stories as Metaphors Peterson challenges us to use personal stories, which hold significant meaning and energy for us, as metaphors for climate change. These stories, often about transitions, conflicts, or breakthroughs in our lives, can draw powerful parallels to our climate efforts. You'll hear two compelling stories from the Citizens' Climate Radio team members Erica Valdez and Horace Mo, each reflecting personal growth and resilience. Horace's Story: A Journey of Friendship and Belonging Horace Mo shares his experience of moving from China to the USA as a 16-year-old. Navigating a new culture and language, Horace found support and friendship in his roommate Kai, who helped him overcome language barriers and cultural differences. This story of adaptation and support mirrors the collective effort needed in climate work, emphasizing the importance of community and mutual aid. Horace reflects, "My English ability soared like a rocket with the help of Kai and other students at school. For the first time, I sensed a personal belonging to the school community." Erica's Story: Confronting Hidden Challenges Erica Valdez recounts her high school friend Sophia's (not her real name) struggles with college applications due to her parents' undocumented status. Erica's story highlights the hidden challenges marginalized communities face, drawing a parallel to the often-overlooked impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations. It emphasizes the need for empathy and support in both personal and climate-related contexts. Erica notes, "Witnessing her stress made me ask, how many people are going through something similar?" Making Climate Connections Peterson tells a story about a toxic, abusive relationship and reveals how this personal relationship mirrors society's relationship with fossil fuels. He also encourages listeners to see the climate connections in Horace's and Erica's stories. Both narratives reflect themes of fear, support, and overcoming obstacles—common experiences in the climate movement. We can create more relatable and engaging narratives that resonate with diverse audiences by relating personal stories to climate issues. Peterson emphasizes,  We need stories that reveal the power of climate change solutions. We need stories that unveil the driving force behind our efforts in addressing climate change. We need stories that unveil the driving force behind our efforts in addressing climate change. Stores that unearth how climate change affects some people differently than others. Stories that will inspire us to keep going. Nerd Corner: The Economic Impact of Climate Change In the Nerd Corner, Citizens' Climate Research Coordinator Dana Nuccitelli discusses the economic impacts of climate change. Using lizards as an analogy, Dana explains how extreme weather events and shifting climates can stunt economic growth, emphasizing the urgent need for swift climate action to mitigate these effects. Dana states, "Most economists agree the faster we act on climate change, the better it will be for the economy. That's especially true if we use a market-based solution like putting a price on carbon pollution. That way, we can see the true price of products, including their climate costs, like a chameleon turning off its camouflage." Why Climate? Featuring James Earl Hollywood III In the new segment, Why Climate?, volunteer James Earl Hollywood III shares his motivation for climate action. A father of nine from Maryland, James highlights how environmental degradation disproportionately affects marginalized communities and underscores the importance of inclusive and collaborative climate solutions. James shares, "Climate change is not just an environmental issue; it's a human rights issue that affects every aspect of my life."  About James James Earl Hollywood III is a dedicated husband, father of nine, minister, and author with a profound commitment to social change and community empowerment. Currently pursuing a doctorate in Social Leadership. James combines his extensive academic background—including degrees in Criminology, Public Administration, Communications, and Implementation Science—with his passion for advocacy and leadership. He has been actively involved with organizations such as the Citizens' Climate Lobby, Americans for Prosperity, and various advisory groups, leveraging his expertise to drive meaningful change. Today's first episode for 2024 is a little different. I recently launched my White Paper – The Social Factor – The Science Behind the Future of Effective People Leadership and today I present it to you in audio format, as some people prefer to listen than to read. The White paper introduces you, the listener, to the concept of Social Leadership. It opens with the big picture and the challenges faced by todays leaders, examples being the gap between what leaders believe that employees want and what they really want and need. We explore the myriad demands of today's leader and the potential cost, mentally and emotionally.  We cover the people leadership journey - 'from Crisis to Conviction' and why the focus needs to be on developing leaders both formally and informally. The Changing Face of Leadership tracks leadership Development over the ages and what 21st Century leadership looks like today in the Social Age. The White Paper then introduces you to the concept of Social Leadership and the social cognitive neuroscience underpinning this approach.  The SOCIAL Model of Core Needs is presented in terms of elements, scope, detail and a detailed description of each element; how the absence of these needs can create a 'threat' response, and ways we can reduce this to create 'reward' responses in our people (the concept of threat and reward and also explained).   We each have a unique 'point in time' hierarchy of needs and this is explained in the paper, together with applications of the model and a case study of how it is being used by a global engineering consultancy.  Finally we look at balancing the focus on people and performance and the consequences of focusing too much or too little on one or the other. If you would like a copy of the white paper, please head over to https://brain-smart.com/social/ and if you would like to complete the Hierarchy of Needs self-assessment here is the link https://brain-smart.com/hierarchy-register/ Finally - we'd love to hear your feedback so please engage with in the Social Leadership Conversation on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/beingbrainsmart/  Clare #socialleadership #podcast #rawthenticleadership #thefutureissocial #leadershipdevelopment

Are you confused about the energy transition and what it will eventually look like? If you read the headlines, it looks like hydrogen is the answer to everything. But what is hydrogen's role and what about the rest - solar, wind, nuclear and more? It can be overwhelming, so when I struggle for clarity, I look for people engaging and sharing great content on social media, but in particular, people who are challenging whatever is accepted in the mainstream media.  And that's how I found Paul Martin, a chemical engineer based in Toronto, who has been very actively participating around this discussion on LinkedIn, and he isn't afraid to correct thoughts and ideas he does not agree with, generating great conversations – because that's how we all learn, right? Not always pretty, go and check Paul out. We need more people participating like this. In this podcast we're discussing hopium (you'll understand after you listen), green wishing, the role of hydrogen, navigating the complexity of our energy options, why moral hazard is something we need to pay attention to, where we need to focus, and we're going to finish with why it's so important to participate as a social leader if you are an expert in your field. If the global narrative is wrong, we need the experts to change it. No more stepping back! We are facing multiple planetary crises' from climate change, to biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, rising pollution, mass migration, rising emissions, new pandemics, governments unwilling or incapable of calling an emergency, business as usual everywhere we look, and so much more. Is it any wonder people are feeling hopeless and desperate in the face of these serious threats? I mean, it doesn't look like we're doing anything about it at all!The idea that we have no voice in this fight, no ability to overcome the challenges we face, is a big issue we want to tackle. Because at this stage in the game, it is us - ALL of us - that really can get governments and businesses acting like our world is on fire, because it is. Of course, it takes courage to speak up and we are going to address the challenges, as well as many other issues that stop people from speaking out in defence of our future, and the future of our planet. To help me dig into this incredibly important topic, I am delighted to welcome three amazing individuals. Anjali Sharma is about to publish her new book “Strategic Storytelling” and she is a master in this field. Anjali's professional focus has been all about helping people steer their success with storytelling. Welcome to the first Climate Courage, a fortnightly Livestream and podcast published on Uncommon Courage, where we will go big picture on the climate crisis and focus on the actions you and I can take to be part of the solution. Whether individual action, community action, or national/global action - every single one of us can be part of ensuring a live-able future for our children and grandchildren. We owe them that! With climate impacts accelerating and ‘news shocks' hitting daily, it is obvious we are in a bad place as a global society, but it's also obvious that our leaders have failed us. With climate emergencies striking all countries across the world – from fire to drought, famine, floods, extinction, ecosystem collapse, melting glaciers, melting permafrost, and more – the failure of politicians, business leaders and economists seemingly stare us in the face, daily. The risk of an unlive-able planet is understood by leaders – the science has been clear for decades - but the actions required to minimize impact have not materialized. If we are honest, there's barely been any action at all – and definitely nowhere near the scale required. What can we do? How can we make a difference? How can we have hope for the future? At Climate Courage, we believe the answer lies in one billion people (#OneBillion) becoming imperfectly in tune with our planet. With one billion people making serious changes at home, in our communities, and in our countries, it will ripple out and others will join the fight. They will because, we will all become beacons of hope and inspiration.  The truth is, if enough don't act, we can't succeed. If enough don't change their lifestyles, we can't succeed. If enough don't understand our role in this (especially those from wealthy countries), we can't succeed. No matter how the media and everyone else positions this, it isn't an ‘us-and-them-situation' – not at this stage in the game - it's an ‘all-in-let's-get-the-job-done moment!' We're wasting too much time on blame, and we have no more time. Don't worry, it doesn't mean we won't call out the super polluters!Hosted by me, Andrea T Edwards, I will be inviting guests with expertise on all areas that matter, and will cover the full gamut of issues, as well as get very specific on what we can all do about it. We will attempt to provide the big picture view and help each of us understand our place and role in this crisis. The intention behind this series is to discuss actions so we can stop feeling useless, as well as give hope in a world that is struggling to find any. There is always hope, especially when WE are the answer we've been looking for. Come and join me with my amazing guests. Share it with your community if it resonates too. Also, if you would like to be part of this, you are welcome, because I will be looking for guests with serious expertise. All ideas, opinions, and solutions are welcome because no one person has all the answers.Let's stop feeling useless in this fight. It's stopping us from acting #UncommonCourage #ClimateCourage

Lynda is usually involved in large development programmes that will run over 6-9 months and often have large numbers of participants. Despite this, her starting point is not content, not showcasing her or her team's knowledge, but connection. Connection with the participants and connecting them with each other. The better that you understand where they are, their starting point, the journey they need to go on then the better facilitator you can be. You are also much better placed then, as Lynda says, to "make yourself redundant".
