There is a statistic that states that that the power of positive thinking can literally extend your life by 7 years! And, further, our guest today, Dr. Anna Marie Frank, states in this episode that positive thinking can PHYSICALLY strengthen your body and sites several studies to demonstrate that. If all women could harness a positive mindset, we feel that we could, indeed, rule the world! But, you know what women do? Maybe we're speaking for ourselves here, but it is our perspective that a lot of women put themselves down and cling to old negative narratives about not being good enough, smart enough, thin enough...enough...PERIOD. I mean fill in the blank, right?! As a matter of fact, women bully ourselves everyday. We know we catch ourselves doing it. And (while we don't claim to be geniuses at math), when we put two and two together...the negative thoughts we continue to carry around with us are actually taking a physical toll on our bodies. Today, our mind-blowing guest, Dr. Anna Marie Frank, is here to rock our world as we discuss brain health, self-love, and kicking all that negative self-talk to the curb. Dr. Frank has written a book called “Stop Bullying Yourself!” which is like a bible for anyone wanting to boost their health, wealth, happiness, and success. She is here to help us rewire our way of thinking and start living as our true, authentic selves Now, Dr. Anna Marie Frank is not just your run-of-the-mill doctor. She's a badass Doctor of Traditional Naturopathy with a Ph.D. in Natural Medicine. She's got credentials and training from the Gerson Institute, Amen Clinics, Integrative Nutrition Institute, Mindvalley, National Wellness Institute, and the Wellness Council of America. Talk about a lifelong learner! She's a woman after our own heart. But let's get real here. This woman isn't just book smart. She's lived it. She's battled depression, dyslexia, and ADD and came out on top. She's the founder of Happy Whole You, a brain health-focused wellness center out in Bakersfield, California. And trust me, she's bringing the sunshine to those brains! And let's not forget she's the "brains" behind—pun totally intended—a line of brain nutraceuticals like “Happy You, Calm You, & Bright You.” Oh, and did I mention she just launched a new bioavailable liquid nutrition line? Because, you know, why stop at one incredible achievement when you can have a dozen? In this episode, Dr. Frank teaches us: You are the only person who can make you happy. Our brains look for (and find) evidence to validate what we are thinking. We are witness to our own thoughts. We then have to ask ourselves, what if this (negative) thought were not true? Asking ourselves these questions pulls us away from our Limbic (or emotional) brain and back into our logical brain. Women have a larger hippocampus than men, so we have a strong emotional memory! Your thoughts will directly impact the biochemical makeup of your physical body. If you think positive thoughts, your body strengthens. How you're thinking is everything. The first step in learning to stop bullying yourself and to love yourself instead is to let go and trust that your life couldn't have happened any other way than how it has happened thus far. In this episode, Dr Natalie Lancer talks to Dr Andrew Marren, Natalie Silverdale and Dr Andrew Parsons. Natalie Silverdale and Dr Andrew Parsons are part of the team behind the pioneering concept of coaching cancer patients at The Fountain Centre, a cancer charity located at St Luke's Cancer Centre at the Royal Surrey Hospital. Dr Andrew Marren researched the ‘therapeutic coaching' happening at the Fountain Centre for his doctorate. We discuss: How did the coaching service at The Fountain Centre get started? How does coaching support cancer patients? How does coaching fit into other holistic and emotional services offered to patients? How is the coaching delivered and in what format? How did The Fountain Centre develop a framework of standards and ethics for coaching cancer patients? How does the coaches' learning and development inform the coaching services offered to patients? What are the key research findings from the patients' and coaches' perspective? What does The Fountain Centre look for in volunteer coaches? How do supervision and self-care practices support the volunteer coaches? How might ‘therapeutic coaching' fit into existing National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance on Cancer Services? The case study of The Fountain Centre demonstrates how coaching is a service that can be offered in addition to counselling and other forms of support. The impact of this service has been recognised by NHS England who are using the approach to develop National Standards for coaching in cancer. In this conversation, we discuss how as well as improving palliative care for people with cancer, coaching in hospitals may well benefit other patients. Our guests today are: Dr Andrew Marren undertook his PhD at the University of Portsmouth as a collaborative project with The Fountain Centre cancer charity. The PhD focused on exploring the impact of coaching cancer patients, from both the coaches' and patients' perspectives. He worked on a coaching project at University of South Wales, exploring the training needs of academic staff. He is currently employed at the University of Winchester as a Lecturer in Psychology and researches coaching in cancer care, advocating for coaching as an emotional support intervention. Natalie Silverdale has been working in the field of cancer and end of life care for over 25 years. Since 2015, she has worked for The Fountain Centre. She is a qualified coach in the Centre and Head of Research and Development. Health systems are providing employees with more well-being resources than ever, but most have a utilization problem. This week's guest is Nicole B. Stec, director of well-being for Banner Health based in Phoenix, AZ. In this podcast, Nicole discusses Banner Health's system-wide comprehensive well-being strategy called “MyWell-Being.” Banner has figured out that the ticket to increasing utilization of these services is to lower the barriers to team members accessing them—in other words, you take the service to the person, instead of trying to take the person to the service. In this podcast, you will learn about:Banner's “five-pillar” strategy that represents the different dimensions of well-being: physical, mental, intellectual, social, and financial. It all adds up to well-being for the whole person. How they worked with their EAP to embed onsite and virtual counselors within their 30 hospitals across the system to help team members struggling with stress and burnout during COVID.Creative strategies they used to create a private, discreet experience for employees and achieve a higher utilization of services. (For example, counselors hand out business cards with QR codes people can scan to quickly and easily make appointments, and they can make appointments during work hours, without using PTO.)Ultimately, Banner's emphasis on well-being underscores its belief in investing in its most valuable asset: its people. Having a great well-being program helps with recruitment and retention and creates a better, more meaningful work experience…which is what today's employees want.In addition to being the director of well-being for Banner Health, Nicole is a national speaker on employer on-site clinics and well-being strategies. For the past ten years, Nicole has worked in community and corporate health settings, designing and implementing population health management strategies for organizations, including healthcare systems, small businesses, the U.S. military, and local government. In her current role, Nicole is responsible for Banner Health's system-wide well-being strategy for 55,000+ team members located in six states. Nicole recently implemented the Banner Strong Center for Healing to support the mental well-being, healing, and recovery of healthcare workers post-pandemic. Nicole has also increased Banner's team member well-being engagement to more than 50 percent in the past two years with the introduction of a holistic well-being approach and new wellness technology.Nicole is a graduate of the University of Southern California (BS), the University of Phoenix (MBA), and the University of South Florida (MPH). She also holds many certifications, including being certified in public health (National Board of Public Health Examiners) and a certified wellness practitioner (National Wellness Institute). As the fitness and wellness professions make the transition towards the healthcare delivery system understand the existing legal ecosystem that governs our scope of practice is becoming exceeding important. Although a discussion of law might now appear like the most riveting conversation, it is a critical important area to understand. We unpack the relevant aspects of fitness and wellness law in episode 68 of the Wellness Paradox Podcast with attorney Barbara Zabawa.Barbara is the founder and President of the Center for Health and Wellness Law, LLC, a law firm dedicated to improving legal access and compliance for the health and wellness industries. Her practice is quite unique in the sense that there are very few practicing lawyers that specialize in this area of law. That, in and of itself, is a very good reason to listen to this episode, as the guidance Barbara will provide is a unique perspective that few in the legal profession have. Our discussion will cover scope of practice, how to mitigate liability, the use of waivers and informed consent and other ways to de-risk your business as a fitness professional (whether you work for someone else or yourself). This becomes particularly important as our profession begins to work with individuals who are higher risk (those with chronic disease) and as we get more referrals from the medical community. While this doesn't replace an individual discussion with a good knowledge lawyer, our chat with Barbara will provide some important context for you to understand some of the legal pitfalls fitness/wellness professionals face. Laura Putnam inspires people to get moving during their workday. As a former gymnast, she was motivated to create Motion Infusion, a leading provider of wellbeing and human performance services. Laura also wrote an award winning book, Workplace Wellness that Works: 10 Steps to Infuse Well-Being and Vitality Into Any Organization, and teaches at Stanford University. She was the recipient of The American Heart Association's “2020 Impact” Award and the National Wellness Institute's “Circle of Leadership” award. Laura firmly believes that work shouldn't feel like a chore. Instead, our work should inspire us to become our best and most authentic selves. She finds that this is highly achievable when efforts are made to integrate movement into our lives, and better yet, our workplaces. “Workplace wellness done well is one in which people are healthier, they're happier, they're closer to their version of ‘me at my best,' because of where they work as opposed to in spite of it.” To hear Laura's advice and learn how to get more active during the workday, download my podcast interview with Dr. Nicole here on iTunes!

Kellie Straub is the Vice President of Growth & Innovation, National Wellness Institute. The National Wellness Institute (NWI) is the leader in providing professional development and engagement opportunities that support individuals from a variety of disciplines in promoting whole–person wellness. At the core of NWI's offerings is its Six Dimensions of Wellness model, developed by NWI co-founder Dr. Bill Hettler in 1976.NWI enriches the lives and careers of wellness professionals by:Serving as the global professional network for connecting to all disciplines of wellnessProviding education and training that promotes life-long learningIdentifying and representing inclusive whole-person professional standards and competenciesThe Vision of the National Wellness Institute (NWI) is to be the worldwide voice of the wellness community. The National Wellness Institute, Inc. (NWI) was officially formed in 1977, but held two wellness symposiums (1975 and 1976) prior to the official organizational launch. Originally, the organization was launched under the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) Foundation, as the Institute for Lifestyle Improvement. Three UWSP faculty at that time—Dennis Elsenrath, EdD, CWP, director of counseling services; Fred Leafgren, PhD, director of student life; and Bill Hettler, MD, CWP, director of health services—joined together with the idea that we, as humans, could live better, healthier lives through the principles of balance and awareness. In 1976, Dr. Hettler released what was to become the base philosophy for the National Wellness Institute: the Six Dimensions of Wellness model. The six dimensions are intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, occupational, and physical. By balancing these six dimensions and actively seeking to improve them, the organization's founders believed individuals could improve their overall well-being.In 1985, the name of the organization was changed to the National Wellness Institute to reflect a more global mission. Then, in 1988, NWI separated from the UWSP Foundation and applied for its own nonprofit status, which was granted August 3, 1989. The National Wellness Institute is a registered 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Each summer NWI welcomes well-minded individuals to its annual National Wellness Conference. Patch Adams, Geoffrey Canada, Mike Huckabee, Naomi Judd, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., David Katz and many other notable individuals have given voice to the wellness movement at the National Wellness Conference. The NWI Foundation, launched in 2003, has actively brought individuals to the National Wellness Conference on scholarships.Programmatically, NWI began accrediting undergraduate health promotion and wellness programs in 2008. It began certifying professional wellness practitioners in early 2009. Today the organization has an active membership and educational outreach program and continues to expand its offerings to meet the growing needs of wellness professionals globally. For more information, please visit www.nationalwellness.orgSupport the show (https://paypal.me/Optamiz?locale.x=en_US)
Happy Day, Friend! On this week's podcast episode, I'm talking about mindful breathing tools for teens. I'm so excited to have my friend and colleague, Matt Dewar, Ed.D., back on the show this week! We had such a great conversation talking about mindful breathing tools for teens and his new book, The Mindful Breathing Workbook for Teens. Motivated by his own personal struggle with anxiety as a young adult and informed by almost two decades of teaching mindfulness and emotional intelligence in schools, Dr. Matt Dewar's message is simple: Through increased awareness, knowledge, and skill, you have the ability to transform stress and adversity into emotional strength and resilience. Dr. Dewar has shared his message with Fortune 500 executives, collegiate and professional athletes, and school districts across the country. He is the former president of the Coalition for Schools Educating Mindfully and the author of The Mindful Breathing Workbook for Teens (2021) and Education and Well-Being: An Ontological Inquiry (2016). His work has been featured on TEDx, NPR, Thrive Global, and the National Wellness Institute. Matt and I talk about: ~ his new book, The Mindful Breathing Workbook for Teens;~ how and why mindfulness practices can be such a positive force in a teen's life; ~ why parent modeling of mindfulness and emotional intelligence is vital for a teen's success~ the mechanics of mindful breathing and how you may be doing it all wrong; and~ and so much more! It was such a lively conversation. I hope you gain a lot of value from it, and hope it inspires you to order a copy of his new book, and start practicing these tools at home on your own so your teen sees first-hand the positive impact of a mindfulness practice in your/their life. If you enjoyed this episode, please share with a friend or family member. The wellness continuum is a sliding scale with no end. The goal is to move towards wellness, but each moment can take us in any direction. Wellness isn't simply the absence of disease. It's a multidimensional continuum that encompasses both sides of health. The goal is to move towards optimal wellness, but the reality is we move up and back with every situation. What is Wellness? The National Wellness Institute defines wellness as "an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence." Basically it means you are practicing habits that move you towards better mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing so that you can achieve your full potential. The illness-wellness continuum shows a visual interpretation that shows how wellness is not simply the absence of disease, in fact there is a neutral point that depicts neither illness or wellness. The Illness-Wellness Continuum This visual of the concept of wellbeing was first proposed by John Walton Travis in 1972. People generally associated wellness with the absence of illness. But through his illustration he showed that overall wellness includes many factors. Not only is there the absence of physical disease, but it takes emotional and mental health into account as well. Just because someone doesn't have physical disease, it doesn't mean they don't suffer from mental disease. Dimensions of Wellness There are many factors when it comes to wellness. While many focus on the physical and mental aspects, other areas come into play as well. Physical Wellness- the state of your physical health meaning how you eat, sleep and move your body affects your overall wellbeing.Emotional Wellness- the state of your feelings and emotions and how you cope with relationships and life in general.Social Wellness- how you interact with others.Spiritual Wellness- using your beliefs and values to live a meaningful life and develop a world view.Intellectual Wellness- keeping your brain stimulated by engaging in activities that are creative and challenge you.Environmental Wellness- making sure your environment allows your well-being to thrive.Occupational Wellness- enriching your life through work that is fulfilling and rewarding. The Importance of Wellness Being able to live life to your full potential requires you to be in a positive state of wellness. Our body cannot function at it's best if we are in a state of disease, whether it is physical or emotional. As we move towards wellness, we start to see many areas of our life improve. From our physical health, to the state of our relationships. Like Newton's First Law of Motion states that a body in motion remains in motion. This can be applied to the motion towards wellness. If we start with one are and work to improve on it, then we are motivated and able to work on other areas. This will come together to affect all areas of wellness and will help our overall wellbeing. Examples of Wellness There are many ways that you can work on your overall well-being. Here are some examples for all dimensions of wellness. Focus on eating wholesome nutritious food.Move your body each day.Meditate.Participate in activities that challenge you and make you step out of your comfort zone.Do something nice for a friend to show them that you care.Practice mindfulness.Surround yourself with people who contribute positively to your life.If you belong to a church, attend activities.Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night.Monitor how much social media you take inStart a new hobby. These are just some examples, there are many things you can do to improve your overall state of health in order to live your best life. Derek B. was introduced to me thanks to Derek M. Small world to be a Derek... However, in the conversation with Derek Bell, we explored much different ground, and speaking with him allowed me to go deeper on things I had only known about from more of a surface level. This was the first time I had a guest where we had no prior relationship. But, that's the beauty of people and this platform. Whether I've known someone for decades or minutes prior to recording, everyone has a story to share and some knowledge to drop and Derek did not disappoint. In this episode, Derek and I discuss new perspectives of wellness (which is a big word & topic), our relationship to writing, reading, and exercising, what self-therapy might look like, Derek being a Law School dropout, the power of cultivating micro-moments, and so much more. On Derek: Derek Bell, MS, CWP, loves whammy bars, soccer, peanut butter. and eats burpees for lunch. An amateur ultramarathoner and CrossFit fan, Derek is the leader of Wellness & Strategy for Ascension Wisconsin at Work. He is also a faculty member at Mid-State Technical College, where he teaches behavior change and population health management, Derek is helping to grow a world where humility, kindness, and generosity reign. He believes a happy and fruitful life requires being CONNECTED, CARING for yourself and others, CONTRIBUTING to your community, and exploring your CREATIVITY. Derek received his bachelor's degree from Knox College and his master's from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. Prior to his work at Ascension, Derek directed the National Wellness Institute, including the National Wellness Conference. Recently, Derek won the United Soccer Coaches Association High School Coach of Significance award for developing assets in youth through his implementation of the Coaching Boys into Men Program with the Stevens Point High School soccer team, where he is the head coach. With over 20 years of experience in wellness, Derek has worked with some of the best minds in the field. His passion lies in the evolving nature of wellness and its interaction with the human experience. Matt loves being active spending time with his family, serving the community and discovering how he can make a bigger impact on people's lives serving a higher purpose. Matt Lund, welcome to the Grants Pass VIP Podcast. Matt: Thank you, I enjoy being here. Brian: Yeah. So why don't you just let us know a little bit about who you are and where people would know you from? Matt: Sure. I don't know how many would know me locally. Although I've been here for a little over a year and a half now. I grew up in Central California. Most of my childhood life obviously. Then for college, I left and went to New Mexico, actually was an athlete played basketball in college at Florida basketball scholarship. From there, I moved out to the Midwest and I played Semi Pro basketball in the CBA. This is now going on 21 years ago. So it's been some years, but after playing I fortunately came across an injury and was it not able to play anymore. Ended up having to decide what to do in life for career, right? What do we do to support ourselves? How do we do it and what's our passion? I decided to go in and work with youth and work with families and do it around what I loved, which was playing sports, and so I ended up getting a job at a YMCA in Wisconsin and started out as a sports coordinator, did it for about two and a half years. Then I ended up going to work for the Chicago Metro YMCA as an operations director. I was running one of the largest sports programs in the country for YMCA's, ended up having about 6,000 kids that came through my sports programs and running another YMCA as well. I was able to then take my career and go down to work for the Wichita YMCA. I became an executive there in Wichita, was there for a few years and then moved on to the Twin Cities and worked in downtown Minneapolis, for the YMCA as well. Was able to really get a well rounded background working in the YMCA and understanding different aspects doing governmental work, doing, obviously nonprofit work for the why learning to work with youth learning to work with older adults, learning to work with families and business ventures. It just really gave me a well rounded background. So I ended up wanting to do more around working with people and understanding how do we help people become more balanced in their life. How do you become healthy spiritually, physically, emotionally, mentally? So I ended up becoming the Executive Director for the National Wellness Institute, which is one of the oldest nonprofit wellness organizations in the world. Did that for about three and a half years, we really focused around the mindfulness and resilience and behavior change. Again, more of the holistic approach, but not so much the physical and nutrition side of it. I got a lot of that information and a lot of that background from the YMCA. Again it was, how do we go about this in the spirit, mind, body? Having that education and that background working at the National Wellness Institute along with the YMCA. When I left the Y to work for the National Wellness Institute, I learned a lot enjoyed my time there. And then I got to a point where it was time for me to come back to where my first love was,...

I've got a list of my 10 to 12 strategies for boosting resilience and they're very practical and actionable. Then I have like a reading list in there. So my favorite books on those topics as well and how to like be more resilient. That's a place where you can immediately get a freebie after listening to this. Rachel's Advice I would say if I were to leave you with one thing to walk away from this with, it would be to have a bit more grace and compassion for yourself. Then to have the courage to get curious about the things that you're doing well, and the things you could be doing better or differently. So that you can grow and to be committed to that journey. Not just at work, but also your other relationships, as well. Because there's going to be crossover and there's going to be spillover benefit. So be willing to be curious, be courageous enough to be curious. Then, based on the feedback that you get, I would say be willing to take action. Be willing to take those courageous action steps because confidence is the byproduct of action. So stop thinking about whatever you are thinking about and take action and go do something about it. When you know, you know. About a job, about a person, about a house. When you know, you know. You may experience it as a nagging. You may experience it as a nudge. You may experience it as a tree falling on your house. Or you may experience it as you asking a million people what they think about so and so, or this place, or your role, or your problem. But deep inside, when you really get quiet, and you finally ask yourself the question, without distractions…you know. So, why do we fumble so much? Ah, one of those all-consuming questions. My guest on this week's Peace & Possibilities podcast, Rachael Baker is sharing how she figured it out. And of course, it's never a straight line there. And because yourself really does know, you can figure it out by following your intuition, believing you can do it, and NOT listening to people telling you you're not cut out for something! If, of course, you BELIEVE you are! What do they know, anyway? They may think they know about you, but only you know when you know. How could they possibly know about you? The good news is that you get to decide. Because you have to LIVE your life. Not the person who told you that you couldn't. We're all in charge of designing the life we want. So stop managing it and create exactly what you want. And for crying out loud, STOP second guessing yourself! In a meeting on June 11th, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) voted to move forward with a new initiative of proposed laws pertaining to wellness programs. The unofficial transcript of the meeting has many wellness professionals concerned that employee wellbeing is not at the forefront of the proposal. Today’s guest, Barbara Zabawa, owner of the Center for Health and Wellness Law, LLC, returns to dissect and explain the new proposal and what it might mean to employers. Barbara is a Clinical Assistant Professor for the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee College of Health Sciences, Department of Health Services Administration in addition to owning a law firm dedicated to improving legal access and compliance for the health and wellness industries. She is an acclaimed author and speaker on health and wellness law topics, lending her expertise to notable wellness powerhouses such as WELCOA, the National Wellness Institute, and HERO. In this episode, Barabara breaks down the construct of the hearing and the new proposed laws. Lastly, Barbara discusses the process of submitting comments on the new proposal once it is made public, and the power of numbers in amplifying different voices. When people aren’t working, the community is suffering, according to Joe Kenner, Vice President of Programs and Partnerships at Greyston Bakery, an organization founded on an open hiring philosophy. From Greyston’s earliest beginnings, they’ve been hiring populations that many would deem unemployable, using a first come first serve approach. As VP of Programs and Partnerships, Joe Kenner is responsible for directing Greyston’s workforce development and community wellness strategies and activities. He’s joined in today’s conversation by Sara Marcus, Partnerships Manager at Greyston’s Center for Open Hiring. She oversees partnerships with employers, non-profit partners, and funders with the ultimate goal of fostering a wider adoption of open hiring among businesses. In this episode, Joe explains Greyston’s humble beginnings, as well as origin of the company’s open hiring policy - a strategy implemented by Greyston’s founder, Bernie Glassman, as a way to help the Yonkers community thrive. He and Sara take a deeper dive on what exactly open hiring entails, as well as the additional support Greyston provides for its employees’ success. They share some of the benefits of open hiring, including a lower rate of turnover and a reallocation of funds into keeping employees rather than hiring them. Joe also discusses some personal stories of employees' lives changed as a result of Greyston’s open hiring. Finally, Sara discusses the process of helping other companies move toward an open hiring model, including the Greyston Learning Lab where companies are invited to Greyston to get a first hand look at facility and how fewer barriers in the hiring process might work for them. Lastly, both Joe and Sara leave us with a final thought that employers can take away. It would be nearly impossible for one wellness organization to be the expert on each of the many facets of whole person wellness. That’s why partnerships and collaborations are so important to Chuck Gillespie, CEO and executive director of the National Wellness Institute (NWI). Chuck is a former human resources executive whose work throughout the last 20 years has included developing workplace and community initiatives and evaluating and consulting with hundreds of organizations on wellness strategies. He has spent time teaching for Purdue University, IUIPUI, and Indian Wesleyan University. Chuck’s passion and dedication to furthering comprehensive wellness are impossible to miss. In today’s interview, Chuck briefly discusses his background and where he thinks wellness is headed. He shares his ideas on technology’s role in wellness initiatives, and how he hopes it can be used to lessen administration time and increase person to person time. Chuck explains NWI’s new mission statement and the Institute’s dedication to creating and fostering more collaboration and partnerships. He expresses his view that more wellness research should be coming from academia rather than vendors and discusses some of the newest studies that have come out. Finally, Chuck tells us a bit about what we can expect at the 2020 National Wellness Conference in Orlando and leaves us with his tangible tip. Dr. Maryann Akers returns as a guest expert in this week's podcast. In part one of our discussion, we are defining wellness. According to the National Wellness Institute, wellness is defined as "an active process through which people become aware of and make choices toward a more successful existence". Just like happiness, wellness is a choice and that's good news. It means that no matter how bleak things may look in your life, you can choose to change. We all know what being unwell can look and feel like. Being unwell can manifest itself as depression, sadness and even suicidal thoughts. The flipside is a life full of possibilities. I love positive emotional states because when I feel positive and I feel more energized I am more likely to do the things that are important to me and that I find valuable. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing, especially while running is so important for my mindset and my mindfulness practice. I recall specifically when I was doing the hundred mile run and how challenging it was the last six miles. So for the last six miles I developed a rhythmic breathing pattern that allowed me to focus on being present and worrying about having to do the last six miles, which was just really, really challenging. So I just focused on my breathing and I'll tell you what, Bruce, it made me just appreciate everything I was just then and there and I wasn't worried about the future. I was so fixed on the present moment that the last six miles just flew by and they weren't as tough as I thought it would be. Suggested Resources Book: The Half-Empty Heart by Alan Downs Book: Upwards: Maximize Life With Positivity, Passion and Purpose by Aaron Hunnel. App: Bullying Story I'm in the military and I recall a situation when I was first going to basic training. Basic training is the boot camp for the army. I remember getting off the bus and I had this really light blue suitcase with all of my stuff in it. As soon as I got off this bus, all of these drill sergeants, which are the ones that are in charge, just started attacking me. I remember specifically [them saying] ... "what do you think, are you going to Disney World? Hey Drill Sergeant, this private thinks he's going to Disney World." So they were ridiculing me and you know that's their job. That's what they're there to do. They try to break you. I was like, oh my gosh, what is going on? Fear started to creep in and I started to think about the nine weeks that I had to spend there. I was thinking about the future, which isn't the present moment, which isn't mindful. I just kept walking and I kept walking and I finally got to the point where I was like, I just have to internally smile and just say, it's going to be okay. So I did. I realized they're here to do this; this is their job. I have to be present right now and understand that they're just trying to make fun of me because I've got this suitcase here and I'm not actually going to Disney World. But I get to be in control of my emotions. Sometimes I think bullying is somebody who wants to exercise control or power over somebody else. And I think mindfulness is finding a way to exercise control or power within yourself. And that's what I did right then and there. Because I found a way to exercise power and control within my own thinking and I overcame it. It ended up being a really cool experience. I loved basic training. It was a challenging experience and I had so much fun with it.
