In this episode of Hit Rewind, hosts Michael and Mindy dive into the world of heist films with a spotlight on "How to Beat the High Cost of Living" and the remake of "Fun with Dick and Jane." These films pivot on narratives of ordinary people driven to extraordinary lengths due to economic pressure. While exploring these stories, Michael and Mindy discuss how both movies resonate with timeless themes of economic instability and blue-collar struggles, touching on historical contexts like the Carter administration's recession and the impact of corporate downsizing. The conversation traverses through character dynamics, societal pressures, and the surprising comedic elements that these heist stories unfurl. With reflections on the performances of iconic actors like Jessica Lange, Jane Curtain, Jim Carrey, and Téa Leoni, the hosts offer insight into the transformation of characters in the face of adversities. They compare the more recent comedic heist adaptation to its original, noting the heart and relatability added to the remake's script. Michael and Mindy elaborate on how these films, though set in different eras, present a relatable tableau of struggle and resilience, with sharp critiques of corporate America and how financial crises affect the everyman. As they dissect these films, they offer listeners a mix of nostalgia and critical perspective on the evolution of heist themed cinema from past to present.

Edie, get some ice cream! We're celebrating 2009's “Grey Gardens” with that fine HBO polish, impeccable prosthetics, a sweeping score, the wild range of Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore working harder than anyone to bring Little Edie Beale to life in all her glory, misery and resilience. Naomi is such a fun and wonderful person! I am really glad that I had the honor of speaking to her about her character ‘Pepper' from American Horror Story: Asylum & Freak Show. She explained everything about her character: how she landed the role, the strategies she used to prepare for the role, what it was like on set with Jessica Lange, the many challenges she had to face, and finally how grateful she is. Honestly, the casting director could not have chosen anyone better than Naomi. I asked her what she is grateful for, and she answered that she's thankful for having the role as Pepper because it essentially changed her life because of the fans of the show and her character. At the end of the interview, she has a special message for her enormous fan base in which I think everyone should listen to.

Today is a bit of a surprise entry in the list of Beeper Bob Classics as it's not a movie the boys thought would resonate with the man. Big Fish starring Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Helena Bonham Carter, Danny DeVito, and many more. Big Fish follows the many craftfully told stories of Edward Bloom and how they affected the lives of those who knew him. A heartfelt movie about the many dynamics of a relationship between a man and his father, Big Fish certainly has earned itself a reputation on the streets, but can it get a good score in the Where To Stick It arena?Support the showCatch new episodes of the Where to Stick It Podcast every Tuesday and Thursday. Martin Scorsese went full Hitchcock for the remake of the thriller, Cape Fear. Extreme closeups, ominous music, and unusual camera angles pulled the director into new waters back in 1991. And, much like DeNiro's Max Cady to a human cheek, audiences ate it up. But now, decades later, was this dark tale worth retelling? Did Nick Nolte's evidence-hiding lawyer deserve this torture? And does the film's bonkers "houseboat of horrors" final act sink this sick flick or elevate it to iconic status? The Old Roommates close all the blinds (a few times) and revisit it all through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. This is the semi-autobiographical musical story of Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider), a legendary choreographer/director struggling with various addictions as he juggles developing a new stage musical and editing a film he has directed. And it was directed by legendary choreographer/director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Lenny) who at the time was dealing with many of the struggles when he wasn't winning multiple Tony Awards and Oscars. It was a true passion project which also attracted a passionate response as it did well at the box office, received mass acclaim, and was also nominated for multiple Oscars including for Best Picture. Scheider was also nominated for Best Actor that year, leading a very talented cast including Ann Reinking, Leland Palmer, Cliff Gorman, Ben Vereen, and Jessica Lange. Jam-packed with several sequences which can be described as sad, sexy, sordid, and joyous, it was quite the original cinematic experience....IT'S SHOWTIME FOLKS!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Front Row Classics is taking a look at one of the most beloved comedies in film history. Brandon is joined by Christian Keys to celebrate 1982's Tootsie. Christian is Associate Producer for One Day to Love, a podcast hosted by actress Tonja Walker. He also happens to be a classic film aficionado. Brandon and Christian discuss how the film remains both fresh & funny as well as a time capsule of the early 80s. They praise the direction of Sydney Pollack and performances by the great ensemble cast including Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange, Bill Murray, Dabney Coleman and Charles Durning. We take the time to also pay tribute to the late Teri Garr.
Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we gush (and hush) over Gwyneth Paltrow with our past, present, and future guest Cory Everett, creator of Cinephile: A Card Game and the ever-expanding My First Movie books! Our B-Sides today are: Flesh and Bone, Hard Eight, Hush, and Sliding Doors. The main focus revolves around her banner year of 1998. Paltrow had FIVE films released in ‘98, including Shakespeare in Love, which won her an Oscar. We talk about her superb SNL opening monologue from 1999 (and her cameo in Ben Affleck's monologue the next year), her deep cultural resonance at the time (some credit her for bringing the color pink back into fashion), the films she made before and after Emma, and her waning movie star era after the year 2000. Of the nearly fifty films in which she has appeared, there have been precious few since 2010 that were not Marvel movies. There was, of course, Mortdecai. And, perhaps most famously, her lifestyle company Goop. There's Hush's infamous test screenings and wig-heavy reshoots (years later, Jessica Lange called the film “a piece of shit”), Sliding Doors' haircuts and soundtrack, and Flesh and Bone's slow-cooked, well-worn dramatics. Also mentioned is that amazing Patrick Doyle score for Great Expectations, The Film Stage's Holiday Gift Guide, And then there's Duets and Gwyneth's hit cover song “Cruisin'” with Huey Lewis. Graciously joined by Emmy winning writer and co-host of Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast, Frank Santopadre, cohosts Dino & Mike tackle two Baltimore-based tales of redemption and hope in I Eat Movies #37: FRANK SANTOPADRE SELECTS! - The Accidental Tourist (1988) / Men Don't Leave (1990). First up, Lawrence Kasdan adapts Anne Tyler's best-seller The Accidental Tourist (1988) where William Hurt (Body Heat), struck by tragedy and living an isolated existence, glimpses a chance at a new beginning with the most unexpected of people. Co-starring Geena Davis (Beetlejuice) in the role that earned her an Oscar, the ensemble cast and tonal shifts from melancholy to quirky humor made this a critical hit deserving of more eyes on it. Next up, director Paul Brickman's long awaited (and only!) follow-up to Risky Business, Men Don't Leave (1990) serves as a complimentary drama with a stellar lead performance from Jessica Lange that came and went with little fanfare... until now. Also, Frank has prescriptions older than Mike, contrasting critical notices on Kasdan's drama from Ebert, Maslin & Kael, cinematic “big swings”, and the state of dramatic adult fare in the movies of today are all discussed in this latest helping of I Eat Movies!

In this episode, I am joined by actor Bryan McClure, who mostly recently appears as a documentary filmmaker opposite Oscar winners Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates in the newest HBO original movie "The Great Lillian Hall." McClure has also appeared in a number of films and TV shows, including as the Headless Night in the Disney mystery adventure fil Haunted Mansion, as well as The Walking Dead, Atlanta, The Summer I Turned Pretty, and Mindhunter. In his latest film, loosely based on a true story, Bryan's character is documenting the production of a play in which the lead actress, a renowned Broadway star, suffers from memory loss and struggles with an increasingly noticeable illness. Bryan explains what it is like making a movie within a movie and shares his experience working alongside the stars of the film. Of course I ask about his intense scene in The Walking Dead where he stabs himself in the throat with a giant screwdriver while facing off with some of the show's most iconic characters. Bryan also talks to me about his upcoming comedy short which he wrote and produced, Roast Pork Butt, based on the worst date he ever had.
