Donald J. Trump was lauded as a political genius for cosplaying as a minimum wage worker at a McDonald's franchise while The New York Times published an audio interview of Gen. John F. Kelly describing Trump as a fascist and admirer of Hitler. Fox decided to bury the story in a heap of French fries prepared by the same wannabe dictator Kelly was trying to warn the American public about. Everyone clutched their pearls to dust after Kamala Harris called Trump a fascist. Stephen A. Smith verbally mopped the floor with Sean Hannity in an amusing and delightful extended rant. According to a report from The New York Post, 20,000 people were in attendance for the event—which included speeches from former President Trump, Robert Kennedy Jr., Tulsi Gabbard, Rep. One source told the NY Post, “they could have sold [out] the Garden twice”—estimating that another 20,000 people were turned away because of limited capacity. 3:15pm- While speaking with The New York Times, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) conceded that Donald Trump has a special bond with Pennsylvania—comparing the former President to Taylor Swift. 3:30pm- Beyonce-Gate is Real & A Problem. Over the weekend, Kamala Harris held a campaign rally in Houston, Texas—with numerous reports stating that Beyonce would be performing her song “Freedom” for the crowd in attendance. However, Beyonce merely spoke briefly at the event and never performed at all. Attendees were so outraged, that at one point during Harris's speech they booed. Send us a textCan a former Marine General's candid insights change the way we view leadership? John F. Kelly, the longest-serving Chief of Staff under former President Donald Trump, joins us to share his firsthand experiences and concerns about Trump's leadership style. From authoritarian tendencies to a preference for military use against domestic opponents, Kelly paints a vivid picture of the risks involved when character and constitutional respect are overshadowed by personal loyalty. Through his stories, we question the implications of electing leaders who might not honor the rule of law or historical American principles.John Kelly doesn't hold back his reflections on Trump's controversial approach to governance. He dives into the unsettling reality of Trump's expectations of personal loyalty over constitutional oaths, sharing moments that shocked many, including Trump's lack of appreciation for those who served in the military. The episode explores how Trump's remarks about military service members reveal a deeper issue of empathy and understanding of sacrifice—two qualities essential for effective leadership. Kelly stresses the need to scrutinize a leader's character and fitness for office, even when their policies align with certain political objectives. The conversation takes a broader turn, exploring the pitfalls of government assistance programs and the potential for abuse. We discuss how some might exploit benefits, using examples from popular culture to illustrate these concerns. This episode is a call to action for listeners to critically evaluate political figures and systems alike, urging for unity and healing in American politics. Kelly's experiences and insights offer a sobering reminder: the stakes are high in ensuring leaders uphold constitutional values and foster true political reconciliation. Support the show

The second story is from The Atlantic, and it is a lengthy article, "Trump: ‘I Need the Kind of Generals That Hitler Had' The Republican nominee's preoccupation with dictators, and his disdain for the American military, is deepening." It is written by Jeffrey Goldberg. But that story begins with a racial slur about "Mexicans." Even though the army private who was brutally murdered was an American of Mexican Heritage. That is where I begin my Political Woman Podcast. Note: The Trump campaign has denied that Trump used the Racial Slur in this story. Dr. Kelly has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and books in the field of addiction medicine. His work has focused on addiction treatment and the recovery process, mechanisms of behavior change, and reducing stigma and discrimination among individuals suffering from addiction. In this Episode: What initially sparked his interest in studying Alcoholics Anonymous and 12-step programs? What were the the key findings of the Cochrane review regarding the efficacy of AA and 12-step approaches? How effective is AA compared to professionally-delivered addiction treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy? Why does AA work for some people but not others? How well does AA work for diverse populations? Are there certain groups for whom it works better or worse? Could these findings be applied to other recovery communities? i.e. Sweet Sobriety, Smart Recovery, LifeRing? What role can AA play within a modern system of clinical addiction treatment and recovery support? His thoughts on harm reduction Why he thinks that sometimes in the addiction field it's either a harm reduction model OR an abstinence model instead of both offered. The research on average recovery trajectories (ie 4 – 5 years before they decide to stop even though the use is very problematic due to stigma or fear and trying moderation, then 7 or 8 years and multiple treatment interventions before they get one full year of abstinence, then 5 years of continuous remission before people are no longer at an elevated risk versus the normal population) People with addiction ned to be given permission to practice recovery instead of just being expected to just stop immediately  Does he believe in Food Addiction ? Worldwide, Alcohol Use Disorder kills 3.3 million people every year. It is the leading cause of death in working men around the world. Alcohol problems are responsible for 10 times the number of fatalities from all illicit drugs combined. Dr. John F. Kelly is a Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Founder and Director of the Recovery Research Institute at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Dr. Kelly led the most rigorous scientific review of Alcoholics Anonymous performed to date. This review, published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, is based on 27 rigorous studies (21 RCT's) done over the past 25 years, involving over 10,000 participants, 150 scientists and 67 institutions. The review reveals that AA and Twelve Step Facilitation not only perform as well as other interventions like CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), but actually do better at helping many more people achieve sustained continuous abstinence and remission. AA and Twelve Step Facilitation produce increased rates and lengths of abstinence when compared to other common treatments. Dr. Kelly shares the research behind why AA is so successful and how AA tends to benefit men and women differently. He draws from decades of scientific research to address the following questions: On average, how long does it take to achieve one year of continuous sobriety? How long does it take to rewire the brain during abstinence, thereby reducing the risk of Alcohol Use Disorder to that of the general population? When talking to a person with Alcohol Use Disorder in early sobriety, how would you explain the changes in his brain? Dr. Kelly offers hope as he comments on the percentage of people with Alcohol Use Disorder who actually achieve full sustained remission. Dr. Kelly normalizes ambivalence and explains how Motivational Interviewing can help move a person toward readiness to change. He shares the 5 most important factors that predict successful long term recovery. Dr. Kelly speaks to the suffering of family members and offers helpful suggestions. We discuss collegiate recovery programs and other sober support networks, like Smart Recovery. It's Friday: that means it's panel time, as we discuss the major stories of the week. Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un failed to strike a deal, calling off nuclear weapons talks early. Some call the summit a failure, while others hail the fact that a so-called “bad” deal would have been worse than no deal at all. Did President Trump waste time and jet fuel going to Hanoi, or is this case of, as Larry Graham would say, you got to go through it to get to it? Trump's negotiating style: personal vs. understanding the importance of research, preparation, front-end diplomacy by career diplomats and negotiators.Canada will move ahead with the extradition case against Chinese technology executive Meng Wanzhou, paving the way for a legal battle that will pit Canada against China and could complicate the relationship between both countries and the United States. For those who may not remember, Meng, who is chief financial officer for China's Huawei Technologies, was arrested at Vancouver's airport on December 1 on US charges related to alleged violations of US sanctions law, setting off an ongoing diplomatic dispute. The decision, which was announced today, means Canada's Justice Department believes there is “sufficient evidence” to proceed with an extradition hearing. Meng will next appear in a Vancouver court on March 6, when the next steps for the hearing will be set. Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen uncorked many disturbing allegations in his seven hours of congressional testimony this week. Will any of it be crucial to the future of the president? Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) invoked Lynne Patton, a former Trump employee and current HUD official, to challenge Cohen's assertion that Trump is racist. Cohen testified he was in the room when Republican strategist Roger Stone called Trump and told him about an impending WikiLeaks release of stolen Democratic National Committee emails. Stone and Trump have not only denied that claim, but also done so in a coordinated way that may shape what special counsel Robert Mueller ultimately does. The consequences here are simple. If Cohen lied to Congress, he could be indicted for it, and the world would soon find out. If Cohen told the truth, then Trump is in trouble. The allegation could be pivotal, because Trump and Stone have been united in denying it, not only in public statements, but also in legally binding assurances to the government. The United States announced today sanctions on Venezuelan officials who blocked a humanitarian aid convoy last week, as opposition leader Juan Guaido toured South America to drum up support for an end to President Nicolas Maduro's government. Guaido says 600 military officers have abandoned Maduro.President Trump ordered his chief of staff to grant his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, a top-secret security clearance last year, overruling concerns flagged by intelligence officials and the White House's top lawyer, the New York Times reported this week. It's within the president's purview to declassify information and grant clearances. My concern is not that he did this. I want to know why those in the intelligence apparatus denied Kushner's application and see him his as being unworthy or such a threat that they would recommend he not receive a top-secret clearance. According to the report, Trump's decision in May so troubled senior administration officials that at least one, then-White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, wrote a contemporaneous internal memo about how he had been “ordered” to give Kushner the top-secret clearance.GUESTS:Shermichael Singleton — Writer and political analyst. Back in December, when Donald Trump nominated retired General John F. Kelly to his current post of U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, he sailed through his Senate confirmation hearings, receiving the chamber's approval by a margin of 88 Senators to 11. But the stricter rules regarding airline travel coming out of the Department of Homeland Security under his watch and his full-throated support for the President's immigration policy, has left many Democrats with buyer's remorse. In this episode of "TrumpWatch," host Jesse Lent talks to researcher Jonah Walters of the quarterly magazine Jacobin about what Kelly's past can tell us about the man and his views on U.S. security policy.

On January 20th, Donald Trump was sworn into office with the message of carnage, destruction, and fear-mongering for the American people who found themselves officially in a new era of politics and discourse. From day one, he proclaimed to be the hero but on day two protests erupted all over the nation and different parts of the world in opposition to the sexist, white supremacist, xenophobic rhetoric used by the newest leader of the free world. BrownTown pours a drink and toasts to the resurgence of activism that has culminated since his election recalling their time in Washington for both the inauguration as well as the Women's March and their time since. But it's been 100 days and we're curious about what Trump has been up to (other than golfing at his own resort). Since January, he has signed 90 Executive Actions, attempted to implement an immigration ban (which has failed twice), and has put together one of the worst cabinets in history. While Trump claimed in many of his campaign speeches to “drain the swamp,” meaning that he would help the little guy get rid of all of the rich, corrupt politicians, he proceeded to fill his cabinet with people who are the antithesis of the ideal person for each role. Michael Flynn, the National Security Advisor appointed by Trump, resigned 24 days after taking office amid the Russia investigation. Our newest EPA director Scott Pruitt does not believe in climate change and John F. Kelly, now in charge of the Department of Homeland Security, is against women and transpeople in the military. The outspoken response to Trump has been overwhelming from media and politicians to artists and athletes. The Trump Administration's absurdity provides a never-ending supply of laughable and ridiculous content while simultaneously making it impossible to take lightly without critical analysis and opposition. In conclusion, call your state representatives, get in the streets, block some traffic, have conversations with people, and, most importantly, don’t normalize Trump, our new #TweeterInChief. -- Read, watch, and interact with the SoapBox in Trumpland multimedia project. -- CREDITS: Audio engineered by Genta Tamashiro. -- Bourbon ’n BrownTown Site | Become a Patron on Patreon! What Does Science Tell Us About The Effectiveness of 12 Step Treatment and Other Mutual Help Organizations In Addiction and Recovery?  The most widely recognized 12 Step recovery organizations globally are Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.   Most people who seek to get and stay sober are referred to a 12 Step recovery program at some point, and some people resist attending based on fear, shame, or the idea that 12 Step programs “don’t work”.  Even within the 12 Step recovery community there is discussion, sometimes, about the effectiveness of these programs. Statistics are thrown around –both for and against – but what does the science say?  How effective are these programs? On this episode, we are honored to have Dr. John F. Kelly as our guest.  Dr. Kelly is the Elizabeth R. Spallin Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, the founder and Director of the Recovery Research Institute at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), the Program Director of the Addiction Recovery Management Service (ARMS) and the Associate Director of the Center for Addiction Medicine at MGH. Dr. Kelly will discuss with us how 12 Step recovery groups impact an individual’s recovery from a scientific perspective.   How well do these programs work?  Is there a difference in their effectiveness for early versus long-term recovery?  Are they more effective following a treatment program?  What studies have been done to demonstrate “success” rates of 12 step group members, and how exactly is “success” defined in this environment? If you participate in a 12 Step recovery program, are considering participating or believe they don’t work but are curious to learn more, this show is for you.
