In episode 136 of Podsongs, Dick Forsman's deep knowledge and passion for birds provide pianist and songwriter Ruben Hein with a unique perspective on the world of raptors, inspiring him to create "Eagles," a song that delves into the profound majesty of these magnificent creatures. Stream the song: https://ffm.to/eagles-rubenhein LYRICS: We can't soar above this Or migrate away Just leaden on the land without wings We're deafened and deceived An outcome out of sight Lost without non-human rights? Oh where the eagles live Over the rim of a far long cliff Where I lay on my belly and look over the edge So I could get a glimpse of what eagles have So I could get a glimpse inside an eagle's head I wish I could get up there Glide through the sky As chaos plays out on the ground Where money does the talking But could it be contrite? Can it say non-human rights? Oh where the eagles live Over the rim of a far long cliff Where I lay on my belly and look over the edge So I could get a glimpse of what eagles have So I could get a glimpse inside an eagle's head It's more than philosophical An upgrade for us all Replace positions we've been claiming for so long It's a necessary call An unexpected rule of law And change the patterns that would otherwise go on Oh where the eagles live Over the rim of a far long cliff Where I lay on my belly and look over the edge So I could get a glimpse of what eagles have So I could get a glimpse inside an eagle's head Dick Forsman: http://www.dickforsman.com/ Ruben Hein: https://rubenhein.nl/ // SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL // Newsletter, donations and download the song for €/$1 @ https://podsongs.com // LINKS // Website: https://podsongs.com Podcast episodes: https://podsongs.com/podcast-episodes Songs: https://podsongs.com/music Spotify artist: https://open.spotify.com/artist/32FYyRx1y1ex3jHHAgLMC7?si=4Nv7WW85SbSPZvCsj1o7Ig Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6sN1viy82HPiNTVX2YBxpq?si=1b84c2b9bdea4656 // SOCIAL // Twitter: https://twitter.com/podsongs Instagram: https://instagram.com/podsongs Facebook: https://facebook.com/podsongs --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podsongs/message

Tom Suharto leads global strategy at Forsman & Bodenfors where his clients include Volvo, Crocs, Baileys, and H&M. Prior to that, he was at Wieden+Kennedy working on iconic brands like Nike and Disney. We discussed all of this and more, this week on the On Brand podcast. About Tom Suharto Tom Suharto leads global strategy at Forsman & Bodenfors, one of the most creatively awarded agencies of the past decade. His clients at Forsman include Volvo, Polestar, Crocs, Goldman Sachs, Baileys, and H&M, to name a few. Before joining Forsman, Tom spent a decade at Wieden+Kennedy, starting in their Shanghai office where he helped to launch Shanghai Disneyland and led strategy on Nike China. Then in Portland, Oregon, where he worked on Nike Women and Just Do It campaigns, helped launch Samsung flagship phones, and led strategy on Facebook Groups. Episode Highlights The Crocs brand is certainly having a moment … Following a recent trip to New York where my daughter was most excited about visiting the Crocs store (!), I had to talk to Tom about his work with Crocs. “With the pandemic, people started prioritizing comfort and Crocs leaned into that. And being unapologetic about being who you are.” The power of polarization. “We talk a lot with Crocs about polarization—how you want people to (ideally) love you or (not-so-ideally) hate you.” But you want that strong emotional response. The staying power of Just Do It. This work is cited so often, I wanted to dig deeper with someone who worked with this campaign while at Wieden+Kennedy. “For something like this to work, you need context. There needs to be a moment to meet. You also have to know your audience.” For Nike, this has always been the voice of the athlete. “That's why Just Do It works.” “Strategy in turbulent times is about prioritizing,” Tom shared of the uncertainty around a pending recession. “But brands adding value to people isn't going out of style—even in a recession.” What brand has made Tom smile recently? “I'm going to share a brand that made my kids smile, which, in turn, made me smile.” Just like my Crocs story! Tom told the story of the IRL “MrBeast Burger” that he and his kids love at the American Dream mall in New Jersey. Franny is a former Post Conviction Indigent Defense Counsel in Nevada who has worked long and hard to improve the system. Today, she speaks with us about how the ACLU lawsuit has brought drastic changes to the state of Nevada and why there are still so many weaknesses. She'll explain how the Nevada public defense system handles the massive amount of rural coverage and share her dream for the future of the state. This week we revisit the "Live Test Series" of stunts for Volvo Trucks, crafted by the Swedish agency Forsman & Bodenfors, including "The Epic Split," the most famous of them all—yet in some ways also very much an outlier of the campaign. We speak with folks from the agency, as well as director Andreas Nilsson and stunt coordinator Peter Pedrero, about the long road to some of the best product demos ever made in advertising.
Frank van Laerhoven is speaking with Maurice Paulissen. Is it a historian? Is it an ecologist? No, it is a landscape historian! Maurice is one of the many commons scholars that cannot be easily categorized by means of a disciplinary label. He is also an exponent of a long tradition within our domain of researchers for whom “going to the field” means “going to an archive” and that manage to reconstruct commons governance 500 or more years back. Maurice co-authored an IJC publication entitled ‘Dire Necessity or Mere Opportunity? Recurrent Peat Commercialisation from Raised Bog Commons in the Early Modern Low Countries' together with Roy van Beek, Serge Nekrassoff, Edward Huijbens, and Theo Spek. The episode starts with an half-hearted attempt to pin down Maurice in terms of academic disciplines (an attempt that partly fails). It then continues with a reflection on the article that served as an excuse for the conversation. That article contests the simplistic notion that in early modern Europe, shared resource management solutions offered by markets or governments were not sufficiently reliable, and therefore fell into the lap of autonomous communities. It is convincingly shown that markets (both local and regional), governments (at various levels, in various forms) and more or less autonomous communities play competing and complementary roles in the governance of peat land – roles that vary over time and place. The conversation ends with a reflection on whether a study of commons governance 500 years ago can be useful for commoners, today. For more analyses of historical commons, also check out the following IJC titles: Laborda-Pemán, M., & De Moor, T. (2016). History and the commons: a necessary conversation.
