A weekly analysis of 15 hours of Fox News programing hosted by Juliet Jeske a researcher and journalist with a background in covering extremism. decodingfoxnews.substack.com
I watch all the Fox News you'd never want to.
The Decoding Fox News podcast is a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding the biases and misinformation prevalent on Fox News. Hosted by Juliet Jeske, this podcast provides a deep dive into the programming and analysis of Fox News, exposing its propaganda tactics and shedding light on the ways in which polarization and right-wing radicalization are perpetuated.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is Jeske's commitment to primary sources and thorough research. She spends over 15 hours per week studying Fox News, analyzing what is reported, what isn't reported, and how it is presented. This dedication allows for greater insight into the strategies employed by Fox News and provides a comprehensive understanding of the network's biased nature. Additionally, Jeske's use of PBS Newshour as a foil further emphasizes the stark contrast between reliable journalism and Fox News' propaganda.
Jeske's systematic analysis of Faux News opinion shows deserves special mention. She delves deep into their content, exposing them as a propaganda machine for right-wing extremists. Her impressions add an entertaining element to her analysis while highlighting the absurdity of some of Fox News' narratives. Furthermore, episodes like "Crazy Cat Lady" demonstrate Jeske's heart for making America a better place and her dedication to shining a light on important issues.
While there are many strengths to this podcast, one potential drawback is the amount of exposure Jeske has to toxic content. Spending 15+ hours per week studying Fox News can have negative effects on one's mental health, so it's important that she takes care of herself in that regard. Furthermore, some listeners may find it challenging to engage with Jeske's quirkiness initially, although they will likely appreciate the vital information provided.
In conclusion, The Decoding Fox News podcast is an invaluable resource for those seeking to understand and counteract the biases and misinformation spread by Fox News. Juliet Jeske's dedication to primary sources, thorough research, and entertaining analysis make this podcast both informative and enjoyable. Despite potential drawbacks related to the exposure to toxic content and Jeske's unique style, the importance of this podcast cannot be overstated.

Last week as Fox News tried to hype up mostly peaceful protests against ICE raids across the country the network was hit with a giant asteroid of a story - one that was too big to ignore and incredibly hard to spin. Israel, seemingly frustrated with Trump's lack of progress with a diplomatic solution, launched Operation Rising Lion and struck Iran's nuclear sites.Iran immediately retaliated striking Israel. As of today 224 Iranians have perished along with 24 Israelis.Israel's actions push the world dangerously close to an expanded global conflict. President Trump has made things worse by recklessly tweeting things that imply that the United States is prepared to enter a full scale war with Iran.Trump posted on social media for Iran's "unconditional surrender" and said the U.S. knew where Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was located, but would not kill him, "for now.” In social media posts Trump has also used the pronoun ‘we' when referring to the actions of the Israeli government. Last week before Trump decided to abuse the power of the presidency with his inappropriate use of the U.S. military the network was dedicated to a story that most Americans couldn't care less about - the former president's use of an autopen. The term ‘autopen' showed up 69 times in last week's transcripts. Last week congressional Republicans led by Rep. James Comer launched a pointless investigation into Joe Biden's use of a signing machine or autopen.American presidents have used machines to sign documents for decades. The use of an autopen is not illegal or unethical. Republicans, helped by Fox News, are trying to create a narrative that Biden was so mentally incapacitated that he had no idea what he was signing or that someone else in the Biden admin. was signing documents without the president's knowledge. The autopen scandal is just the latest bright shiny object to keep the Fox News audience focused on something besides Trump's attempts to turn the United States into his own private fascist fiefdom. Last week after Elon Musk announced he would be leaving his role in the Trump administration Fox News ramped up its hero worship of the eccentric billionaire to hyperdrive. For months Fox News has aggressively tried to promote Elon Musk as a selfless patriot who loved his adopted country so much that he donated his time and energy to cutting government waste, fraud and abuse to save the United States from the beast of overwhelming debt. The network portrayed his relationship with Trump as if they were as close as brothers. Musk became a main character on the network who was even compared to the Marvel comic book hero Iron Man.Despite the feverish PR campaign to make Musk into a beloved figure most Americans, including Republicans, still don't like him or his non-congressionally approved wannabe government agency DOGE - the Department of Government Efficiency. Last week started with the announcement that former president Joe Biden had an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bone. The folks at Fox used the former president's diagnosis as even more proof that the entire Democratic Party was complicit in hiding his declining health to the American public.Meanwhile Trump continues to show signs of his own cognitive decline along with a severe personality disorder. During a commencement speech at West Point Trump claimed there were ‘no wars and no problems' during his first administration.During Trump's first term in office the U.S. was still at war in Afghanistan, Neo Nazis terrorized Charlottesville, Virginia, a global pandemic caused the death of millions, international supply chains fell apart, Americans faced shortages of food, medical equipment and other necessities, and entire industries were shutdown. Last week on Fox News the network overhyped an Instagram post of seashells by the seashore, downplayed a flagrant violation of the emoluments clause while barely mentioning that a major a financial services company downgraded the credit rating for the United States. The network also spent an inordinate amount of time trashing the Democratic Party while promoting the idea of a vast conspiracy to cover up Joe Biden's cognitive decline during his presidency.Sean Hannity and Jesse Watters staunchly defended the president's plans to accept a $400 million luxury jet from the Qatari government even while their co-hosts and Republican elected officials expressed their doubts. Last week on Fox News the network shifted its focus as quickly as its glorious leader came up with another incredibly stupid idea. While President Trump openly questioned if he should negate the U.S. Constitution on “Meet the Press” with Kristen Welker the folks at Fox News were more worked up about his plans to transform a crumbling national landmark into a state-of-the-art maximum security prison.Since Trump seemed obsessed with resurrecting the notorious Alcatraz prison while being flippant about the due process rights of millions of Americans and noncitizens I couldn't help but think that he might be the first longterm guest at the island ruin.Laura Ingraham claimed she could translate Trump's incoherent ramblings about negating due process for non-citizens in criminal and immigration courts.Brian Kilmeade complained that too many people were using Medicaid, the entire cast of “The Five” suddenly became experts in the nation's air traffic control system while White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller decided he was a structural engineer. Last week on Fox News the network celebrated the first 100 days of Trump's second term in office with a live studio audience on “Fox & Friends” that featured surprise appearances by popular Fox News personalities, a mentalist, a comedian and free copies of Dana Perino's latest advice book. The network buried its recent poll that showed Trump's approval rating falling with voters on nearly every major issue. Sean Hannity declared with no evidence that every negative poll about Trump was fake news designed to harm his many ambitious plans to make American great again. He also openly thanked his audience for voting for Trump. This is a public episode. Last week as Americans grew increasingly worried about Trump's chaotic trade deals Fox News distracted its audience with stories about dark woke Democrats, a renegade dog-walking Tesla vandal, the negative qualities of Pope Francis, the short-comings of due process and the never-ending deep state persecution of Pete Hegseth. The segments that got the most airtime on the network focused on problems within the Democratic Party. When Fox can't promote anything positive about the Trump administration it falls back on one of its favorite topics - Democrats are terrible. This is a public episode. The United States has reached a constitutional crisis that could damage or destroy our democracy for years to come. Fox News made the choice to cheerlead for the erosion of the rule of law by conflating Ábrego García's case with a violent rape and murder even though Ábrego García has never been convicted of any crime. Trump even discussed sending “home grown criminals” or U.S. citizens, to the same draconian prison that some have compared to Nazi concentration camps. This is a public episode. Last week on Fox News every talking head was dedicated to distracting its viewers from the catastrophe of Trump's chaotic tariff policies. Sean Hannity dedicated an entire episode to radical Democrats, Jesse Watters decided that men with office jobs turn into women, Judge Jeanine Pirro was screaming about the lack of Cadillacs in Europe while Jessica Tarlov and occasionally Steve Doocy were sending off distress signals. The same network that claimed Biden's economy was destroying the country downplayed the threat of a full-blown depression due to a madman's half-baked ideas on global trade. Fox told its audience that Americans were too dependent on cheap stuff in an economy that is driven by consumer spending. This is a public episode. Last week, as trillions of dollars of value were lost on the stock market and other global trading markets, Fox News hosts promoted the idea of a bipartisan Senate and House investigation into Joe Biden's cognitive decline during his presidency. They couldn't have come up with a worse solution for improving investors' confidence in the U.S. economy than a never-ending inquiry of a former president. Perhaps Rep. James Comey and Rep. Jim Jordan could start a publicly traded company called “Wager the Waste of Time,” where people could place bets on the least damning evidence, the craziest witnesses and the number of nude photos of Hunter Biden displayed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in any given hearing. This is a public episode. Last week Fox News revived its hatred of the network's favorite Democratic villainess to distract its viewers from Signalgate - the messy and embarrassing scandal involving top military and intelligence government officials discussing an airstrike in Yemen on their personal phones with a reporter privy to their every word. Hillary Clinton - the ultimate liberal, corrupt, establishment, progressive, uppity, corporatist, doormat wife, scheming Machiavellian, crusher of souls, and wannabe dictator was brought up 18 times last week even though she hasn't held a position in the United States government since 2013. Last week on Fox several guests and a few hosts openly debunked lies the network was trying to promote. It was a festival of guests and Fox News employees accidentally going rogue as they didn't follow the Fox News narrative. Something wonky happened in the propaganda matrix. Even Fox News hosts inadvertently undermined their own talking points. Were the astronauts really stranded in space? Was domestic terrorism a serious crime or just a protest that got out of hand? On Monday Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, published a story about how he was accidentally invited into a group chat on Signal where top defense and intelligence officials planned a military strike on Yemen. Fox tried to ignore the story then had a complete meltdown over it. The Trump administration hit its first iceberg of sorts but luckily this time no one went down with the ship. Last week as the stock market tanked, the delicate truce between Israel and Hamas faltered, Russian drones pummeled Ukrainian cities, and another commercial airplane burst into flames Fox News wanted its viewers to take pity on the richest man in the world. On Fox Elon Musk was portrayed as a selfless man dedicated to helping his adopted country pull itself out of a death spiral of debt and bloated government waste. Vicious investors were dumping stock of his precious electric vehicle company Tesla while blue-haired transgender activists set fire to EV charging stations and defenseless Cybertrucks. Last week on Fox News the network took a slight shift away from its aggressive promotion of Elon Musk's DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) to focus on a favorite topic - incompetent Democrats. The minority party was everything all at once - too old, young, radical, meek, uptight, woke, sleepy, bombastic, corrupt, backward, ineffective, Machiavellian and shifty. On “The Five,” producers featured two or three segments in a row that basically had the same message - Democrats are terrible. The network even returned to trashing former President Joe Biden. Meanwhile the Trump administration was hit with multiple lawsuits surrounding the DOGE task force This is a public episode. A rare video podcast that covers how multiple Fox News shows covered Donald J. Trump's disastrous Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Last week the folks on Fox continued to elevate Elon Musk as a wildly popular champion of the American people while they pretended proposed $5000 DOGE dividend checks issued to every adult American would not cause inflation. Crime, the economy, transgender athletes, DEI programs, the woke mind virus, border crossings and mass deportations all took a backseat as the network became a DOGE infomercial. Meanwhile in town halls across the country organized by Republican members of congress angry constituents complained bitterly about the reckless unelected billionaire who was destroying jobs and slashing important government programs. Last week the folks on Fox created fables about Elon Musk the selfless tech warrior who was lowering tax bills for everyday Americans. The network promoted the idea that DOGE was only destroying wasteful woke programs meant to push deranged ideology. Tom Homan basically openly admitted Trump made a deal with Eric Adams to keep him out of prison. It was a celebration of corruption and grift on Fox News. This is a public episode. Last week the folks at Fox twisted themselves into knots to defend the actions of a maniacal corrupt billionaire hellbent on destroying entire government agencies without congressional oversight. They would never admit that their glorious leader, Donald J. Trump, was just a puppet for Elon Musk, a South African immigrant with extremist political leanings. This is a public episode. The folks at Fox were quick to repeat and amplify the deranged tirades of our malignant narcissist president who blamed diversity, equity and inclusion programs for the recent catastrophic fatal crash of a military helicopter and commercial airline over the Potomac. When grieving families and shocked Americans needed words of sympathy and reassurance Trump was more than happy to terrify and provoke. At the time of President Trump's hateful statements authorities didn't know the identities of anyone involved in the disaster. Trump assumed with no evidence that the crash was the result of a degradation of hiring standards. This is a public episode. Last week the folks at Fox News treated Donald J. Trump as if he were a supernatural being who came down from heaven on the wings of a bald eagle to vanquish the woke, transgender, cultural Marxist enemies of the United States and lift the nation up to a mythical state of its former glory when robber barons swam through the Panama Canal. There was one topic no one wanted to talk about - Trump's pardon of January 6th rioters. This is a public episode. I watched roughly six hours of inauguration coverage on Fox News along with six hours on the PBS News Hour. I pulled quotes from both to show how a garbage propaganda network (Fox News) compared to a high quality nonpartisan news source. Stephanie Sy, of PBS, shares some great insight on Trump supporters. Brit Hume of Fox News created his own reality. PBS included experts and academics while Fox News trotted out its own employees. Fox News looked even more ridiculous than usual. Last week the folks on Fox were angrier than ever that Joe Biden lasted until the end of his term and that Vice President Kamala Harris declared it was not in her nature to go “quietly into the night.” Fox News personalities claimed that Trump negotiated the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Sean Hannity and others declared that the FDA's decision to ban a food dye. The network also bolstered Melania Trump's false claim that the Obama administration impeded her move into the White House during her husband's first term even though Mrs. Trump lived in Manhattan for the first five months of her husband's presidency. Last week on Fox the network used the tragedy of unprecedented wildfires in Southern California as a cudgel to attack Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. In stark contrast the “PBS News Hour” covered the fires as if they were a natural disaster not a failure of leadership. Jesse Watters seems to think he's the emperor of the universe and Janice Dean, the weather lady on Fox & Friends, went rouge! This is a public episode. Fox News promoted a false narrative about the terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year's Day. Even after the network issued a retraction hosts and guests alike kept insinuating that immigration played a role in the attack. Last week on Fox News the subject of vigilante violence was center focus as the network lionized Daniel Penny, a former Marine who was acquitted of criminally negligent homicide for killing a homeless man, while lambasting the public reaction towards the cold-blooded assassination of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The folks at Fox also seemed disappointed that Black Lives Matter protesters weren't rioting across the country over Penny's acquittal. Sean Hannity and Dr. Drew Pinsky both weaved fairy tales about the healthcare system in the United States while Hannity also obsessed over mysterious drones, Jessica Tarlov schooled her co-hosts on Biden's economic accomplishments and Tom Homan said he would prosecute governors if they got in the way of his plans for mass deportations. Last week on Fox the outrage machine was on overdrive as the overpaid stuffed shirts expressed their disgust at President Biden's decision to pardon his son Hunter. Judge Jeanine conveniently forgot to mention that Trump pardoned her ex-husband, Steve Doocy and Emily Compagno both declared that the president-elect was already improving the economy and Jesse Watters joked about annexing Canada and Greenland while promoting conspiracy theories about Iran rigging the 2020 election.Jessica Tarlov was the only person on the network that mentioned Donald J. Trump also pardoned a family member. Hunter Biden had fallen off the radar of Fox News but last week it was suddenly the most important topic in the world. This is a public episode. Last week the folks at Fox demonized Vice President Kamala Harris for raising and spending money, trashed Joe Biden for celebrating Thanksgiving with members of the U.S. Coast Guard and tried to cover up that Trump really was connected to Project 2025. As Trump continued to pick unqualified, radical people with sex scandals for various high-ranking positions in his administration the right-wing propaganda machine tried desperately to distract with segments about Kamala Harris wasting donor money by spending it. Fox tried to sugarcoat Trump's many alarming picks for various cabinet positions while Steve Doocy and others openly admitted some of Trump's plans for mass deportation, shutting down the Department of Education and paying off the national debt with crude oil revenue were unattainable. The Murdoch owned media empire is already lowering its viewers expectations for the next Trump administration. Judge Jeanine Pirro, Jesse Watters and Greg Gutfeld completely demonized and trashed transgender Americans - portraying them as sexual predators lingering in women's bathrooms. At the same time, they ignored a lawsuit filed against the company formerly run by Trump's pick to lead the Department of Education that involved the sexual abuse of minor aged boys. The folks at Fox News knew they had one job last week and that was to coronate Donald J. Trump while trashing his opponent Vice President Kamala Harris. Donald J. Trump was lauded as a political genius for cosplaying as a minimum wage worker at a McDonald's franchise while The New York Times published an audio interview of Gen. John F. Kelly describing Trump as a fascist and admirer of Hitler. Fox decided to bury the story in a heap of French fries prepared by the same wannabe dictator Kelly was trying to warn the American public about. Last week on Fox News the 2024 election was reduced to a battle to win over one of the smallest voting demographics in the American electorate - Black men a group normally loyal to the Democratic Party. The network also ramped up fear of the emasculating left by pushing stories of trans female athletes and government programs that pay for gender affirming surgeries for prisoners. Kamala Harris was presented as an evil shrew while Tim Walz was an ineffective effeminate even though he's been a highly successful politician since he flipped a Republican Congressional district blue and rose to the highest office in the state of Minnesota. Fox News decided to lean into the skid and scare the bejeezus out of its audience with a combination of the longshoreman strike, increased violence in the Middle East and the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Late in the week Donald J. Trump told multiple lies about the federal response to the hurricane that Fox News hosts were happy to amplify. When Fox News doesn't like reality it makes up its own. Fox News hosts pretended Kamala Harris was tanking in the polls when she's actually gaining more ground on Trump. Fox also ignored the easily verifiable timeline associated with the criminal indictment surrounding New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The FBI started investigating Adams two years before the mayor started feuding with President Biden. Fox also gave up an hour of its airtime for Trump to use as a platform for his campaign. Jesse Watters compared Kamala Harris to an actual infant. This is a public episode. Fox made a dramatic pivot from trashing Kamala Harris to promoting Donald J. Trump. The network also obsessively covered the second assassination attempt on the former president. Fox hosts complained about heated rhetoric while ignoring Trump's inflammatory words. The network also featured a lot of Trump including him on a n episode of “Gutfeld,” and giving away it's primetime coverage to show a live feed of a Trump rally in Long Island, NY. Laura Ingraham whipped up fear about Haitian immigrants while Lawrence Jones claims there was no racial aspects to their harassment.
