In “The Imperfect Harvest” by Elder Stanfill, we get a welcome reminder that our effort is enough - more than enough - and Christ can increase it tenfold. Here are some questions to consider as you study: When has a "clumsy effort" of yours lead to a miracle in your life or the lives of others? How often do you compare yourselves to others? This is a moment to reflect on why we serve others, as Sister Joy D. Jones explains that serving others shows our love for God.
This is a moment to reflect on Family Values as Sister Joy D. Jones explains the importance of teaching children the gospel.
I often get asked the question, "How old should my children be before I can start teaching them the gospel?" The answer might surprise you. Sister Joy D. Jones in her conference address from April 2021 entitled Essential Conversations, tells us that “There is a uniquely special time in children's lives when they are protected from Satan's influence. It is a time when they are innocent and sin free. It is a sacred time for parent and child. “ That being the case, we can't wait until their 8 before we begin the teaching process. We need to start as early as possible! In this episode Dixie Christensen shares with us how she is finding ways to teach her four small children ranging from 1 -6. Much of her teaching centers around using a theme and creating experiences to help her children relate what they are learning to their own lives. Listen to Dixie as she shares real life examples of how to take advantage of this sacred time. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/myteachingmatters/message

In the most recent general conference Sis Joy Jones talked about how having simple yet “Essential conversations” with our children can help prepare them for the future. Sis Jones states, "We can have fun helping our children build spiritual resilience at any age. It doesn't have to be complicated or time intensive. Simple, caring conversations can lead children to know not only what they believe, but more important, why they believe it." (Apr. 2021 General Conference, Essential Conversations, Joy D. Jones) So what does an Essential Conversation look like? How can we include more of them in our teaching ? and How will they help to strengthen my family's testimony? Join us in today's episode to as we look at the FIVE steps for creating simple, caring conversations. Today, we’re sharing our #1 tip for getting your kids to behave perfectly (just kidding - but seriously, to get them to be pretty darn good) on your next family trip, and it’s had an extremely high success rate for us. We’re also talking about something way more important – crucial conversations. It was the topic of one of my favorite speeches from a recent self-development conference our church held worldwide – the importance of having essential conversations with your kids to prepare them for real-life scenarios BEFORE they happen. We’re sharing some of the topics we’ve talked about with our kids, and how we’ve already seen the blessings of some of those conversations. In this episode, you will hear: The point system works great when you're traveling with your kids. They could only earn toward positive behavior – one point for each good thing they do. Then they could use up all their points at the end to purchase something they really wanted. The point system is positively motivating to your kids, rather than giving them consequences for bad behavior. Having crucial conversations with your kids before they have certain life challenges hit them is so important. The best time to teach is early – when children are still immune to the temptations of the mortal enemy and long before the words of truth may be harder for them to hear in the noise of their personal struggles. Once kids start to struggle internally, they might question truth, or what to do or how to face things. Having had those crucial conversations, they’re then able to remember and draw strength from them, allowing them to make better choices. Have intentional conversations rather than accidental conversations. Being intentional in teaching and testifying can help children, at a young age, begin to feel the influence of the Holy Ghost – essential to our children's testimony and conversion to Jesus Christ. You won't teach your kids when you think you're teaching them. It’s usually those things in between the lines and in random conversations where they will learn from you and that will stick with them their whole lives. Some topic ideas for those intentional conversations with your kids Have an open channel of communication where your kids feel they’re in a safe place, especially when it comes to vulnerable or sensitive situations. What truth do you want your kids to know eternally? Supporting Resources: “Essential Conversations” Talk by Joy D. this past year we've faced so many things collectively. we've had to reevaluate our goals in life...we've even had to make changes. i've been humbled by those around me, listening to their hearts and responding to callings & passions. some of these are personal calls to attend to their health...to make themselves a priority for the first time in a long while. others are inviting us to do small and simple things to make our communities a better place. still others are bravely asking the hard questions. whatever the call, may you find the courage to hear your heart and act, for truly, ladies and sisters, it is our turn!LINKSep.133 - listen, get out of their way, and cheer them on! As Christmas approaches many thoughts turn to children. In addition to seeking and finding joy during this special season, children can also serve others and reflect the love and example of the Savior Jesus Christ in their actions and through their examples. The Primary general presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is working with Latter-day Saint Charities and the Friend magazine — the Church’s global publication for children — to help children emulate the life and teachings of Jesus Christ through service this season and throughout 2021. The effort, emphasizing the “helping hands and loving hearts” of children, will be featured monthly next year in the Friend magazine. This episode of the Church News podcast features Primary General President Joy D. Jones, Sister Sharon Eubank of the Relief Society general presidency, and Friend magazine editor Jan Pinborough. They discuss the natural ability of children to love and serve, how children have been impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic, and service opportunities for children this season and throughout 2021. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Have you wondered how to teach children about pornography? Me too friend. This week's podcast episode is all about raising porn addiction resistant children/ This episode stems from a question from last week’s Q & A: “Hi Jeni! I have a question for you: how do you raise sex addiction resistant children? I think about having kids and I worry about them suffering from the same demons that my husband does. I worry about them picking up not safe emotional habits.” I want to say thank you so much for this beautiful question. I have many of the same concerns and am actively looking for ways to help my 6 children with these very things. Basically, I’m in the trenches with you. What does porn do to children’s brains? Neurosurgeon Donald Hilton says this: “Our brain cells change with learning. Addictive learning sculpts the brain in a very damaging way and we can become very set in certain behaviors and tastes. When there is a reward like pornography, that's a specially powerful printing process. The brain doesn't forget that. A 12- year-old who sees hardcore porn is going to say 'Wow that was amazing'. Sometimes children may be frightened, but the fascination overcomes the fright eventually. One thing our brain wants is novelty, change. It wants a different face, a different body shape. Boys, and increasingly girls, are struggling with porn. They literally surf for hours looking for the perfect clip to masturbate to. There is a lot of scientific evidence that sex can, and in particular Internet porn, be addictive. It's like a blackjack game, it's a different set of cards every time.” The thing is, it's not IF children will see porn, it's WHEN. In a talk titled "A Sin Resistant Generation" by Joy D. Jones, she talks about a critical understanding when she says, “We must understand our—and their—divine identity and purpose before we can help our children see who they are and why they are here. We must help them know without question that they are sons and daughters of a loving Heavenly Father and that He has divine expectations of them.” We discuss Rat Park in today's episode as well. We talk about the ROOT of addiction, which is lack of connection. How do we make it safe for children to share their feelings in our home so that they can ultimately connect in healthy ways with others. This week we also discuss the skill of making feelings safe. In regards to this, we discuss the following quote from Katy Willis, “When I finally learned that each one of us has the right to feel and that we can validate the other person without also having to validate the drama, the distortions, the story… it has completely changed the way I approach others.” Something else that we can’t miss in this process is how do we talk to our children about sex and sexuality? Of course this is incredibly personal per family but I’ll share what we are working on. We'll additionally talk about: Talking about sex in age appropriate ways Taking shame OUT when talking about sex to children How to talk about sex frequently When Talking About Pornography, here's a few things that we teach our children: 1- Name it (That's pornography) 2- Crash (Turn off any devices, close a magazine, etc.) 3- Tell (Talk to a trusted adult- like a parent) 4- Recognize that no matter how it made you feel, you aren’t bad. Take the shame out. What To Do When Your Child Tells You That They’ve Seen Porn If one of my children comes and tells me that they have seen porn, Know that there are many levels of porn use and it doesn’t mean that they are addiction. Of course, it doesn’t mean that there’s not addiction. Staying cur

Moms wear many hats-nurse, maid, chauffeur, detective, event planner, law enforcer... the list could go on and on! But the most important hat that moms never take off is the crown of motherhood. Sometimes this crown gets buried beneath the other hats. As moms, we need to make sure that we remember that motherhood is a noble calling and let our crown shine! "Hats Off to Mother" Ann Romney Quote Joy D. Jones Quote
Sister Joy D. Jones offered seven ideas of what we should strive to be before we participate in dialogue about religious education and freedom, which can be applied to any discussion.
I feel meaningful connection with someone when I receive a gift knowing they had been listening. Yesterday, Mother’s Day, my three daughters all gave me something that expressed in their own way something they have heard me say or noticed what brought me joy in the past.My oldest daughter and her husband brought one of my favorite games to play. My youngest daughter gave me a lotion that is one of my favorite scents. My middle daughter, hot glued a sprig of lilac to the front of a card she had made by hand and filled with words of genuine appreciation.Sometimes the gifts or support we receive is hard to accept. I have multiple times received gifts of food that I don’t really eat, for example. But I feel love and genuine appreciation for that person, who may not understand me quite as well as my daughters do. They are expressing themselves in the best way they know in the moment. We are none of us, perfect. However, we are all perfect right where we are with what we know in this moment. I feel genuine appreciation for the thoughtful gift of a purposeful gesture of the heart.Mary, on our call noted that when genuine appreciation is expressed, she feels a love that is tangible that penetrates and fills the soul. There is no faking when this kind of heart to heart connection is established. Although each of us expresses appreciation differently, when it is sincere, all barriers on both sides are dissolved.Tyrie, one of our live participants today, expressed that she feels more willing to receive genuine appreciation after she has expressed it. Giving, receiving and then paying gratitude forward, perpetuates genuine appreciation.Finding and having genuine appreciation for our place in life right now is the catalyst that opens the way for new positive experiences and more things to be grateful for!I Give Myself Permission to Give and Receive Genuine AppreciationI recognize and allow others to express their appreciation in a way that is authentic to them.I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity to serve and giveI feel and receive genuine appreciation from God for the small and big ways I am His hands every day.I do what I do best because I and my gifts and talentsI accept my contribution to the worldI am genuinely grateful for who I am and what I have right nowKathy, on the call today, shared a talk from October 2018 General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints given by Joy D. We are all enticed and tempted by our surroundings. It is by our agency that we respond to enticements in a way that helps us become more like Christ.
This episode has been in the works since this time last year! It’s about time we finally got our friend and Talks on Talks listener Tyler Todd on the show to talk about the fascinating story of his conversion after watching the Book of Mormon Musical. He shared with us what it was like first learning about the church from the musical, how he transitioned to meeting with the missionaries and their mission president, and how he handled his conversion story being picked up by USA Today. Take a listen and don’t forget to wish Tyler congratulations on recently getting engaged! You go, Tyler!
