Episode 115. Join host Troy Saunders as he chats with writer, producer, multi instrumentalist, pianist, Jesse Thompson!Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, known in music circles as the land of funk, Jesse Thompson couldn't help but be influenced by the city's great R&B pioneers – including Slave, Ohio Players, Lakeside and Zapp featuring Roger Troutman. For the past 20 years, the multi-talented composer, pianist and keyboardist manifested these inspirations – and helped bring the legacies of these legendary bands forward – as a former member of the popular and prolific, constantly gigging Columbus-based R&B/jazz ensemble NexLevel.Unlike many longtime band members and sidemen who work towards someday expressing themselves as solo artists, Thompson was content with his existing whirlwind of activity playing with others. But when the pandemic hit, he instinctively used his down time to, as he says, “sow a seed of happiness” to create “Weekend Groove” – an irrepressible Next-Gen disco vibin' house beat driven track featuring flutist Althea Rene and a horn section by Kelly O'Donohue that ultimately became the lead single to his uniquely titled debut album The Inauguration of Jtjazz (Jesse Thompson the Man Behind the Keys). Though its dance floor ready lead single “Weekend Groove” will immediately spark excitement and lift the spirits just as Jesse Thompson intended, there are a multitude of other pleasures to experience on The Inauguration of Jtjazz (Jesse Thompson the Man Behind the Keys) – an album which truly rolls like an autobiographical blend of his many influences, from those Dayton funk legends to George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Joe Sample and Brian Culbertson. The album's latest single “It Doesn't Matter” is a sensual, easy grooving romantic joint featuring Thompson interacting with #1 Billboard charting trumpeter Lin Rountree – who he connected with via mutual connections at the individual HBCU schools they attended. As a showcase for Thompson's great talents on Fender Rhodes (creating a moody effect and his sparkling acoustic piano, the song taps into Thompson's love of Joe Sample's vibe both with the Crusaders and as a solo artist. The elegant funk ballad “The Right One Baby” offers a similar seductive duality. Troy highlighted three song from this incredible project "Weekend Grove", Obsidian, and "It Doesn't Matter".Being the son of a father who was a professional jazz drummer and a mother who was a church organist/pianist, Jesse Thompson – aka “JTJazz” came by his musical gifts naturally and started playing the drums as his first instrument at the age of five. By the time JT was twelve years old, he played a total of thirteen instruments, the piano being one of them. In addition to his parents, he was influenced by his oldest brother Marvyn Wheatley, who recorded and played with Parliament and Slave. Thompson spent time with his brothers in the studio hanging out with Slave, Roger Troutman & Zapp, Steve Arrington and othersThese experiences truly fueled his musical passions and ambitions. While he studied manufacturing engineering and IT at Central State University (in Wilberforce, OH), he played in the school's marching band and jazz ensemble and joined the national honorary band of the Kappa Kappa Psi fraternity. His other influences include Alex Bugnon, Jimmy Smith, Billy Preston, Jeff Lorber, James Lloyd and Bob James.Troy and Jesse discusses Jesse's musical bucket list, future endeavors giving back and more.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. Episode 001 • March 4, 2024 • “Every Podcast Has An Origin Story” INTRODUCTION Wondering how to start a podcast? Rob is, even as the trailer and first two episodes of his podcast drop. The difference is, he's got help. After listening to this episode, you'll have some insight into why this podcast is off and running ... and you'll laugh. A lot. So why wait? Press play and let's get started! FIRST STRAIN: what's this podcast about? There are a few podcasts out there that get into the wind band subject. But the majority of them are focused on the music education side of things. What I didn't find were podcasts that seemed meant for the larger audience: anybody who ever did band. Out in the big world where not everybody “gets” band, it can be a tougher environment in which to outwardly revel in our band geek-ness. So one important goal for this program will be to build community through band – to be a resource *and a refuge* for band geeks! I'm looking forward to having conversations with people who know about topics that either you wondered about, or you never really thought about before, but which are part of the Band Thing. Such as: band conducting; band directing; community bands; band arranging and composition; the college drum major experience; marching percussion; color guard instruction and design; adjudication; drum corps; young music educators; band director burnout; band alumni organization; service groups like Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma; pipe bands; mummers bands; student leadership; writing and blogging about band; videography; as well as conversations which will be unique and defy categorization. But we'll also focus on the “extra-musical” elements of the band experience. Because great heavens, there are stories. So. A resource, and a refuge. For all of us who inhabit this particular corner of the world, who share this particular curious interest. SECOND STRAIN: Who is this Hammerton fellow? Why does Rob think he's qualified to run a band podcast? Right: I very often have that nagging feeling ... while I've spent the majority of my life and certainly my entire adult life IN BAND, I still feel like I don't know as much as I want to know. This podcast is my opportunity to pick the brains of band people who know more about band than I do, so we can get better informed about this activity we love so much. TRIO: Glen Adsit obituary Glen Adsit, director of bands at the University of Hartford's Hartt School of Music, died suddenly, back in January. An appreciation, and a remembrance of my meeting with him at last summer's New England Band Directors Institute (NEBDI), organized by the New Hampshire Band Directors Association (NHBDA). https://www.glenadsit.com/ https://www.hartford.edu/directory/hartt/adsit-glen.aspx DOGFIGHT: Internet Rabbit Hole of the Week: the Bands of His Majesty's Royal Marines The analogous organization to the bands of the US Marine Corps ... but with differences! Their website: https://www.royalmarinesbands.co.uk/ Your gateway to their performances: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYJEr-MUBV0 CODA Like the pilot episode of any TV show, I'm finding my way here. I'm excited to talk to more wise people about their areas of expertise, AND to talk to YOU about YOUR band experience. Again, what is band but a community of like-minded friends? FOLLOW US! Composer Frank Ticheli shares his experience with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, which manifested in his 30's in the form of chronic pain and impeded his ability to compose. We discuss how Frank reframed his relationship to his writing process in order to reconnect with his work, difficulties with medication and therapy, and how cultivating a dialogue with one's subconscious enriches creativity. Lastly, we discuss Frank's An American Elegy, commissioned by the Alpha Iota Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi in memory of the victims of the mass shooting at Columbine High School, and the role that educators can play in caring for and monitoring their students' mental health during increasingly anxious times. https://www.manhattanbeachmusiconline.com/frank_ticheli/ Questions or comments may be shared on Julia Adolphe's YouTube Channel
