pWotD Episode 2713: Greek alphabet Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 1,559,477 views on Saturday, 5 October 2024 our article of the day is Greek alphabet. The Greek alphabet has been used to write the Greek language since the late 9th or early 8th century BC. It is derived from the earlier Phoenician alphabet, and was the earliest known alphabetic script to have distinct letters for vowels as well as consonants. In Archaic and early Classical times, the Greek alphabet existed in many local variants, but, by the end of the 4th century BC, the Euclidean alphabet, with 24 letters, ordered from alpha to omega, had become standard and it is this version that is still used for Greek writing today. The uppercase and lowercase forms of the 24 letters are: Α α, Β β, Γ γ, Δ δ, Ε ε, Ζ ζ, Η η, Θ θ, Ι ι, Κ κ, Λ λ, Μ μ, Ν ν, Ξ ξ, Ο ο, Π π, Ρ ρ, Σ σ/ς, Τ τ, Υ υ, Φ φ, Χ χ, Ψ ψ, Ω ω.The Greek alphabet is the ancestor of the Latin and Cyrillic scripts. Like Latin and Cyrillic, Greek originally had only a single form of each letter; it developed the letter case distinction between uppercase and lowercase in parallel with Latin during the modern era. Sound values and conventional transcriptions for some of the letters differ between Ancient and Modern Greek usage because the pronunciation of Greek has changed significantly between the 5th century BC and today. Modern and Ancient Greek also use different diacritics, with modern Greek keeping only the stress accent (acute) and the diaeresis.Apart from its use in writing the Greek language, in both its ancient and its modern forms, the Greek alphabet today also serves as a source of international technical symbols and labels in many domains of mathematics, science, and other fields. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:52 UTC on Sunday, 6 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Greek alphabet on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Danielle.

A state of mind.
Allison and Mallory are closing out Season 1 of the Women We Know podcast with Deirdre Keane, Xi Upsilon-Northeastern, whose inspirational story was shared in the spring issue of The LAMP. To battle the depression that came with her Covid-19 hospital shifts as a nurse practitioner in NYC during the pandemic, Deirdre turned to running. Her experience turned into a huge goal of completing the World Marathon Challenge – which meant completing seven marathons in seven days on seven continents! Her story is incredible but more incredible because it is so relatable to so many people on many levels. Look for Season 2 of the Women We Know Podcast in September! And send us any women WE should know by emailing LAMP@deltazeta.org.

The scorpion has a potent stinger -- a pair of bright stars at the tip of its curving body. They're low in the southern sky as night falls, with the rest of Scorpius curling to their upper right. The brighter star in the stinger is known as Lambda Scorpii. It's the second-brightest star in Scorpius, so it's hard to miss. Fainter Upsilon Scorpii stands close to its right. Lambda actually consists of three stars. The main star is more than 10 times as massive as the Sun, so it burns through its nuclear fuel in a hurry. It'll soon begin to exhaust that supply, so it'll puff outward. The star will engulf its closer companion, which is only a few million miles away. That may destroy the companion, perhaps sending its core spiraling into the core of the main star. And that may hasten the demise of the main star, which is likely to explode as a supernova. Upsilon is a single star, but it's also a stunner. It's about 10 times the Sun's mass, and many thousands of times its brilliance. Although Lambda and Upsilon appear quite close together, they're dozens of light-years apart. Even so, the stars are related. They were born from the same giant complex of gas and dust. This region has given birth to many massive stars, including Antares, the scorpion's bright orange heart. But the stars are only loosely bound together, so they're moving apart -- spreading their brilliance across the galaxy. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory
How we doing spacers? Good to hear. This is your host, Luca. My co-host AJ and I just watched the fifth episode of The Mandalorian: The Pirate. Out of context, this episode is a complete waste of time. Yes, there are cool starships on display. Yes there are dogfights, laser blasts, and rockets fired. However, the only things that move the story forward are so minuscule and minute you the viewer might end up missing out on them. Yes the pirate's invade and yes, they are defeated. We knew that was going to happen. Unfortunately this storyline takes up most of the episode. What's more interesting is we learn the villain from seasons one and two, Moff Gideon, might not have received his due justice. There's a very eerie shot of a wrecked Lambda-Class shuttle floating aimlessly in space. The hull breached and it's crew frozen in the empty vacuum of space. It's terrifying! Well done to the cinematographer who drew this up. They've clearly taken inspiration from James Cameron's Aliens with how the scanner of the R2 unit pans beam of blue scanner energy around the fuselage. On a personal side note, I love the design of this ship. It's got the right amount of bureaucratic efficiency, malice and terror the Empire would want to display. You see variations of it throughout the timeline with Kylo Ren landing on Jakku with an Upsilon-class Command Shuttle. Prior to this, The Armorer speaks to Bo-Katan and tells her she believes she did in fact see the Mythosaur. With this knowledge she asks her to remove her helmet and parades her in front of the rest of the Covert. Here she declares that Bo-Katan "walks in both worlds" and will herald a new chapter in Mandalorian history where all tribes are united. All of these essential story elements in the last five minutes of the episode. I can tell why Jon Favreau is beginning to fight with Disney about the direction of the show. Gorian Shard looks and sounds exactly like a Disney villain. Not a pirate from the Star Wars universe. He's just a text book meanie that the good guy Mandalorians have to kills. All this being said, the production value does not falter. Everything looks great. Especially the Cumulus-Class Corsair on fire crashing into the surface of Nevarro. The only other bit of annoyance was The Armorer's choice of weaponry for the liberation of Nevarro. Tongs and a Hammer. Do either of those fire lasers, missiles, flames, grappling hooks, poison darts, I hear you ask? No. She fights exclusively in melee combat only in a world where only Jedi typically use melee weapons and all her enemies use energy and projectile weapons. One long sigh later and I'm done writing the show notes. Let us know what your thoughts are on the episode. Thanks for listening. -Luca Subscribe to us on YouTube Subscribe on Apple Podcasts Subscribe on Spotify Visit us on Reddit Check out the Discord Server Email us at StarWarsRewatchPodcast@gmail.com

In this week's episode, Mallory and Allison talk to Kaliela Osha, Xi Upsilon – Northeastern University, the Founder & CEO of Brillie, an online community created to combat the workplace gender gap by driving more women into positions of leadership quicker. She is passionate about leveraging technology to solve big problems and make the world a better place. After graduating with a degree in behavioral neuroscience, Kaliela found that though the workplace gender gap starts at the beginning of our careers, there were limited resources available for early-stage career women - primarily due to costs and accessibility. She now lives in California, where she is launching Brillie to the world. Find out more at https://www.brillie.org/ and connect with Kaliela on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/kalielaosha.
Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.16.532980v1?rss=1 Authors: Ulrich, M., Pollali, E., Caliskan, G., Stork, O., Albrecht, A. Abstract: Anxiety disorders have been linked to a disbalance of excitation and inhibition in a network of brain structures comprising frontal cortical regions, the amygdala and the hippocampus, among others. While recent imaging studies in humans suggest sex differences in the activation of such anxiety network structures in processing emotional information, the neuronal basis of activation shifts and their relation to anxiety endophenotypes is less well studied. Rodent models with genetically altered {Upsilon}-amino butyric acid (GABA) neurotransmission may provide a targeted approach for addressing such questions, but to date sex effects have rarely been addressed in such models. Using mice with a null mutation of the GABA synthetizing enzyme glutamate decarboxylase 65 (GAD65-/-), we started to compare anxiety-like behavior, discrimination and avoidance learning in male vs. female GAD65-/- mice and their wildtype littermates. Our behavioral test battery revealed increased activity on GAD65-/- mice in the open field and an adaptation of anxiety-like behavior especially in male GAD65-/- mice. Male GAD65-/- mice further displayed a deficit in avoidance learning, while Female GAD65 -/- mice performed well in this task. To gain insights into interneuron function in anxiety and threat perception network structures, fast oscillations (10-45 Hz) were measured in ex vivo slice preparations of the ACC. GAD65-/- mice of both sexes displayed increased gamma power in the ACC that was further accompanied by higher densities of PV-positive interneurons, which are crucial for generating such rhythmic activity. In addition, male GAD65-/- mice had lower numbers of somatostatin-positive interneurons in the basolateral amygdala and dorsal dentate gyrus, two key regions important for anxiety and active avoidance responses. Together, male mice appeared more challenged by GAD65 deficiency in avoidance learning tasks and adapted their anxiety-like response differently, which was associated with an altered interneuron composition and function in an ACC-amygdala-hippocampal network. Many of us have experienced the challenge of an empty gas tank, an empty bank account, or an empty stomach. Can emptiness ever be a good thing? How can emptiness be something God could use? In this message we talk about how the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ demonstrates how God the Father can use the "upsilon factor" to bring glory and honor to himself. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus' will and flesh were pressed and tested, while his disciples fell asleep. In this Garden of pressing trial of flesh and will, Jesus surrendered his own personal will to obediently and fully embrace the Father's will. Is there anything of flesh and will that we need to empty ourselves of, that God may receive more glory and honor in and through our lives? Just like Jesus, our lives - our will, our desires, our flesh - anything that diminishes our love for God - these are the seeds that must go into the ground and die, that the fruits of revival and reformation may come forth? When we empty ourselves, God can fill us, and keep filling us to overflow his power and presence into our families and communities, bringing about the kind of spiritual transformation we read about in the Book of Acts. How do we get empty? Go to the Garden and lay it all down. As Jacob Aranza once said, "Jesus isn't all you need, until Jesus is all you have." We pray this message blesses you. • Phi Upsilon Omicron is the National Honor Society in Family and Consumer Sciences. We were actually founded in 1909 at the University of Minnesota, so we've got a long history there, and actually originally were designated as the honor society for home economics, (2:09)• A membership and rotation invitation to a collegiate chapter through local honorary membership, and then we also have national honorary membership, which is bestowed upon someone in our biennial conclave, so lots of different avenues there to become a part of our efforts and to become a member.(4:51)• Within the last year, Phi U launched a YouTube channel, so we even have had some members when chapter submit their own content to be featured on our YouTube channel, so that's been super fun to just watch them work and to be so inspired, so I encourage your listeners to check out, it's potential Honor Society are YouTube channel, and we have some professional project videos on there where the students talk specifically about their community service and the impact they've made through the organization, and that's always wonderful, and then we've got some recognition videos on there where you can kind of see the name or scholarships and fellowships and grants, and even alumni distinguished service awards that we've given through the years.(13:32)• We have some eligibility information on what institutions could be considered for membership, but mainly we have a petition form that just seems to be filled out and signed off by different leadership levels at the institution and submitted to national counsel for vote, but a lot of times if they meet on that criteria, what we found is the biggest hurdle is just working with establishing a new student organization on campus, so if they have a sponsor or someone willing to help them navigate that and the rest is pretty simple. (19:52)• Just because you're not active on our roster doesn't mean that we have struck through your name in the database, you're still a Phi U member, and we would love to welcome you back into the fold and reconnect you to the greek track; That's easier than ever. You can go on our website at PhiU.org and log in and set up your own profile, you can even add pictures, share about your family, reconnect with other members, so that's an opportunity there. This special episode features a panel hosted by author Cindy Kent during Discovery Park's recent Military History and Armed Forces Symposium. Kent is the editor of the book “Better Men: Alpha Upsilon in Vietnam” released in 2020. The panel included some of the men who are highlighted in her compilation of stories from 14 Vietnam veterans who, before they became brothers of war, were already brothers at the University of Tennessee at Martin's Alpha Upsilon chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR), the national agriculture fraternity. Twenty-one brothers from Alpha Upsilon served in Vietnam. All returned alive; 14 of the 17 remaining brothers participated in the “Better Men” project. “Better Men: Alpha Upsilon in Vietnam” is available through The Tennessee Magazine Marketplace online store at tnmagazine.org/shop and at the Discovery Park of America gift shop.

Koen and I had this wide ranging and fascinating conversation on May 15, 2020. Koen Bertels is the head of the Quantum Computer Architectures Lab. He currently focus on Quantum Computing and more specifically on the overall system design and architecture aspects. He is a principal investigator in Qutech where he collaborates with experimental physicists on building prototype quantum processors. Koen's research interests spanned two of the three research pillars of the Lab, namely Multi and Many-core architectures and Electronic System Level Design. He was responsible for the Delft Workbench project that aims to provide semi-automatic support for designing heterogeneous multicore platforms where reconfigurable technology offers plenty of possibilities to generate application specific hardware at runtime. An overview of relevant publications on various topics related to heterogeneous multicore computing can be found on his research page. He also started two companies. The first, called BlueBee, was formed with colleagues from the CE lab and Wayne Luk from Imperial College, that provides a cloud service for genome sequencing. Bluebee received 10 Mio € venture capital in 2016. More information can be found on the the BlueBee website below. The second company is a financial portfoliomanagement software company in Luxemburg, called Upsilon, also below. www.upsilon.lu This is a link to Koen's lab: www.tudelft.nl/eemcs/the-faculty/departments/quantum-computer-engineering/quantum-computer-architecture-lab/staff/koen-bertels Here is a link to BlueBee: www.bluebee.com Here is a link to one of Koen's Ted Talks and you can find many more of his presentations on the emerging field of quantum computing online: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPplkPKDZHI --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dennis-tardan/support

Recruiting is one of those things that is absolutely vital to every clan! If your clan is going to stay healthy and active, someone needs to be on it. And just like dating, finding the right people (or the right clan if you're searching) can be exciting...and scary! JohnnyGator of Reddit Ace and JerseyDiablo of Reddit Upsilon join me to talk clash about recruiting! JohnnyGator is author of some of the most hilarious recruiting posts on r/ClashofClans and leader of Reddit Ace who, although they are a CWL clan, still needs to stay on top of it to bring in new blood. JerseyDiablo is a long time leader and, like me, long time fellow user of /r/ClashofClansRecruit and the /r/ClashofClans recruiting opportunities. Today we'll talk about why you need to recruit, how it's changed over the years, and things to think about while doing it! Plus learn a little bit about Reddit Ace! Trivia: did you know they were the original Reddit Eta in 2013? Except Supercell in game search censored the name, and thus they are Reddit Ace! Opening songs: Credit to the Theme Music of the Dating Game and The Newlywed Game JohnnyGator interview starts at minute 14, JerseyDiablo interview at minute 39!
It's the off season which means the team will be talking to riders all winter long and asking burning questions in our Locker Room Talk series. First up we have French team rider Tom Carlile! Tom takes us through the 2017 season, including the high of setting an Event Rider Masters record with Upsilon and the low of things not going to plan at Strzegom. He is more motivated than ever for 2018 and shares his exciting plans for the season. We also surprise Tom with a quick-fire quiz and discover his love for mares. You have to listen to find out which mare he would have in his yard if he could choose any in the world!
Finally Championship time is here for 2017 and all eyes turn to Strzegom where the best of best will battle it out to be crowned European champion. We have a full house of Nicole, Jenni, Sam and Diarm all giving their views on the ones to beat (and who might come unstuck!). Jung is aiming for history again — surely he can't win four European titles in a row on four different horses?! He is going to have to beat the best to do it. Ingrid arrives on Aachen superstar Horseware Hale Bob, Tom and Upsilon fly the French flag, while Gemma and Quicklook V will surely be the cornerstone of the British challenge. 5 days of top class eventing action awaits!
This will be the first of a four part series on creating Clash of Clans video content! In this episode I'm joined by returning guests Bazie of Reddit Heroes and Andy of Reddit Upsilon. Both regularly do recaps for their clans and will talk about their creative choices, the benefits it gives their clans, the technical aspects of creating and publishing to YouTube with two very different set-ups and some of the thought process that goes into deciding what to include. You can find both of their videos regularly published to our subreddit and the RCS discord. At the end of the episode we also talk about balancing admin time effectively and compare and contrast Upsilon and Heroes which are two clans growing in very different ways with respect to increasing the family size and tackling entry into competitive tournaments. Please join the 3 of us to Talk Clash and stay tuned for the rest of the episodes on content creation following this one! Find their channels here: Reddit Heroes Clashin' in a Van (Reddit Upsilon)
It's another Event Rider Masters Special as the team reviews leg 3 at Barbury. Diarm is away on official EquiRatings business but Sam, Jenni & Nicole have plenty to talk about. No surprises as the girls swoon over Upsilon, who set all sorts of ERM records with his win. The great Nereo also gets his own time in the spotlight thanks to his new personal best in the dressage! As if it couldn't get anymore exciting, leg 4 at Jardy is just a few days away. The team also looks at Great Meadow, which hosted the only FEI Nations Cup leg outside Europe in The Plains, Virginia. Jennie Brannigan and Cambalda continued their incredible form at CIC3* level by taking the individual win, and Team USA topped the podium for the second consecutive year. There are also shout outs for Canada's cracking form on cross country and Team GB's top performances from Nicky Roncoroni and Emily Llewellyn.
This episode is an Event Rider Masters Special all about Leg 1 at Dodson & Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials. The team talk through the key facts and figures for Chatsworth, including the Need for Speed. The optimum time is notoriously difficult to make at this venue. Can anything catch the clock? Nicole proclaims her undying love for Upsilon, but Diarm has a surprise for her. Sam tips an Italian pair with a chance to break into the all-time top 10 ERM dressage scores. Jenni still can't find her voice but has her eye on an exciting British combination. Watch Leg 1 from Chatsworth live at www.eventridermasters.tv and follow the conversation on social media @ERMEventing and #ERMEventing Don't forget to follow us on Twitter or Facebook using #eventingpodcast and subscribe via iTunes — feel free to leave a 5* review too

Fantasy Flight Games held back a few choice snippets about Wave 9, such as maneuver dials and certain upgrade cards. However, they launched them into the wild with limited pre-release sales at GenCon, and we now know the precise contents of each ship in this wave. We break down the previously unknown details about the ARC-170, Mandalorian Concord Dawn Protectorate Fang Fighter, and Lancer-class Pursuit Craft. To tantalize us even further, FFG also dropped the first Wave 10 preview, announcing Sabine's TIE Fighter (a Rebel hijacked TIE), the Upsilon-class Shuttle (Kylo Ren's whip), and the Quadjumper (the tugboat Rey wanted to grand theft instead of the Falcon). We discuss the revealed content, and attempt to decipher the mystery items from the preview photo and clues in the article. (Dee's eyes melted staring at a zoom enlarged copy of the photo.) Finally, we fangasm at the new Rogue One trailer! We intend on tightening up moving forward, but this is a longer episode to deal with all of the news just dropped on us - enjoy! [00:00:00] Intros! 46 Union Street: The Untold Story of Rho Upsilon Bruce A. Kesselman Determined to document a compelling history and counteract the stereotypical view of fraternities, Rutgers University graduate Bruce Kesselman stepped out of the rat-race for awhile to archive and document a non-fiction account of his beloved Alpha Epsilon Pi, one of the oldest Jewish fraternities in the country. In 46 Union Street, Kesselman uses his own experience as a brother of AEP as a launch point to interview thousands of fraternity members, flying all over the country to meet key alumni, reading countless historical documents and issues of Rutgers s daily newspaper and yearbook to providing a vivid account of Greek life at Rutgers from 1956 to today.

Levy processes and infinitely divisible distributions are increasingly defined in terms of their Levy measure. In order to describe the dependence structure of a multivariate Levy measure, Tankov (2003) introduced positive Levy copulas. Together with the marginal Levy measures they completely describe multivariate Levy measures on the first quadrant. In this paper, we show that any such Levy copula defines itself a Levy measure with 1-stable margins, in a canonical way. A limit theorem is obtained, characterising convergence of Levy measures with the aid of Levy copulas. Homogeneous Levy copulas are considered in detail. They correspond to Levy processes which have a time-constant Levy copula. Furthermore, we show how the Levy copula concept can be used to construct multivariat distributions in the Bondesson class with prescribed margins in the Bondesson class. The construction depends on a mapping Upsilon, recently introduced by Barndorff-Nielsen and Thorbjornsen (2004a,b) and Barndorff-Nielsen, Maejima and Sato (2004). Similar results are obtained for self-decomposable distributions and for distributions in the Thorin class.
