Have you ever wondered why you have dreams in black and white? Or maybe you consistently have dreams about falling…why is that? Kelly Bulkeley, Ph. D is a psychologist and dream researcher who is the director of the Sleep and Dream Database. Kelly joined us to discuss not only the science behind your dreams but also help you interpret your dreams!Ask Alexa to play WBZ NewsRadio on #iHeartRadio!
Laura and Dave go head-to-head with an AI trained to interpret dreams. Who (or what) comes up with the most meaningful interpretations? You decide! Elswhere is a dream journaling app that offers interpretations powered by a GPT (generative pre-trained transformer), otherwise known as a generative AI. Kelly Bulkeley and Sheldon Juncker have been instrumental in creating and training Elsewhere to interpret dreams, and they come aboard the Dream Boat to discuss the intersection of technology and dreaming, specifically the use of AI in dream interpretation. The guests discuss the accuracy and insights provided by the AI interpretations, which draw on the work of Freud and Jung, among others. In an extended “Dream of the Week” segment, Sheldon shares a dream for Dave and Laura to explore and interpret, and then the group hears what Elsewhere had to say about it. What will the influence of AI be on dream interpretation, and are there potential benefits of using AI as a tool for self-reflection and understanding? Hopefully it's collaboration, not competition. Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D., is a dream researcher and author with a background in the psychology of religion. He is director of the Sleep and Dream Database (as discussed on episode 2 of this series of the Dream Boat), a Senior Editor of the APA journal Dreaming, and a former President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. Sheldon Juncker, B.Sc. is a software engineer who works in the fields of dream research, data analysis, and artificial intelligence, who in addition to his work with Dr Bulkeley on Elsewhere also helps to maintain the Sleep and Dream Database. "Dreamers, big dreamers in particular really need to step forward today. It's more important than ever, I think, to bring dreaming into the world." Dave and Laura interview Dr. Kelly Bulkeley about his book, The Spirituality of Dreaming: Unlocking the Wisdom of Our Sleeping Selves. They explore the idea that dreaming is not just about personal insight, but also about spiritual insight for ourselves, our communities, and the world. Dr. Bulkeley emphasizes the transformative and dynamic nature of dreams and the potential for dreaming to bring about change and growth in our lives. For the Dream of the Week, Kelly shares a dream that involves flying through a shopping mall with tv character Jeff Winger. The discussion explores the symbolism of Jeff Winger and the themes of growth, narcissism, relating to others and coming down to earth. How do dreams influence and reflect our spiritual beliefs and experiences across different cultures and historical periods, and what does scientific research reveal about this relationship? Kelly Bulkeley, PhD, is a global expert on dreaming and the psychology of religion. We explore his latest book "The Spirituality of Dreaming: Unlocking the Wisdom of Our Sleeping Selves." Dreams universally function as essential gateways to spiritual understanding, a truth echoed across cultures and eras. Modern sleep and dream research confront and expand upon the traditional views revealing a more complex nature of dreams. These dreams, whether as visitations, flights, or nightmares, reflect our existential questions and actively shape religious beliefs and practices. Merging empirical research with mystical interpretations, dreams are clearly more than mere reflections of waking life; they are direct conduits to deep spiritual insights. Prepare to discover who historically engaged with dreams in spiritual contexts; when these interpretations have been significant, from ancient times to the present; how dreams connect with spiritual experiences, often seen as divine messages or reflections of the soul; what types of dreams, such as visitation or flying dreams, are spiritually significant; where across different cultures and traditions dreams are valued for their spiritual implications; whether modern scientific research supports historical beliefs about the spiritual nature of dreams; which aspects of dreaming, like vividness and metaphorical content, shape religious beliefs; and why dreams remain a source of intrigue in understanding human spirituality and its relation to the divine…..and so much more….. “We are such stuff as dreams are made on…” Dreams and the theater with guest Professor Angel Morgan. Angel starts by describing lucid dream drama where the dreamer is performer, director, audience and also playwright, getting to chose whether to change the dream or not, saying that this kind of dream exploration helps build the muscle for lucid dreaming. Angel talks about her presentations at the upcoming IASD conference in Ashland (June 18-22), which are all related to dreaming and theater. We talk about when theater appears in dreams, examples of dream-inspired theater through the ages, and indigenous approaches to dream drama. In honor of the 40th Anniversary of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, I'm taking a look at dreamwork and how our connection to is has changed in the recent decades. Back then, most dreamers felt they were alone, and the IASD gave them a community where they could share research, insights and help promote the idea that dreams were important for everyone. Today the IASD has grown into a worldwide organization that promote an awareness and appreciation of dreams in both professional and public arenas.Although not there at the beginning, renowned Dream Researcher Kelly Bulkeley has been an integral part of the IASD'S growth over the years. Kelly's knowledge and insights have helped legitimize dreamwork as a serious discipline. He's a past president of the organization and in this episode, he shares his views on dreamwork today and what we can expect in the future. Kelly tells us:• Why he believes the 1980s was the birth of the dream movement.• How he turned heads at his first IASD conference • The reason more people are interested in dreamwork today• The connection between dreams and news events• Why he got interested in collecting dreams – and what he does with them• The connection between dreams and spiritualityIf you're interested in the role of dreams in our world today, check out this fascinating episode of Dream Power Radio.Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D., is a dream researcher and author with a background in the psychology of religion. On this week's episode the boys tackle rude hand gestures and lucid dreaming! Lucid dreaming seems hard, but it's actually very simple. Just follow these easy steps: 1) through out the day do a task that reminds you that you're awake, such as counting your fingers, 2) make a dream journal to help you remember you dreams and focus on them, 3) ignore the sleep demon in the corner of the room and for the love of God don't make eye contact with it or accept any of its deals, 4) Do. not. talk. to the demon. His name is the Sunken One and his sole pleasure in life is mortal torment. The only known ritual to banish him is the impossible task of getting a full nights sleep. Unessa uhat ja ongelmat paisuvat usein järjettömän suuriksi, jotta me saisimme ottaa valveajan ongelmat vakavasti. Amerikkalainen tutkija Kelly Bulkeley on rinnastanut unet eläinpentujen leikkeihin, joissa harjoitellaan niitä taitoja, joita eläimet tarvitsevat täysikasvuisina. Kirjailija Anna Tommola on perehtynyt unitutkimukseen. Hän nyt Kalle Haatasen vieraana.

Dream Scientist, Bob Hoss, Director of the Dream Science Foundation, and past president of the International Association for the Study of Dreams (www.AsDreams.org -- and will be speaking at the upcoming conference) wrangled 100 dreamers (ala in the style of "Chicken Soup for the Soul") to share stories that have done just that! Have you ever awakened from a dream that left you feeling stunned—a dream so vivid or impactful—so unexpected—that it changes your life from that point forward? Imagine you could ask a question of a dream character, or the dream itself, and watch as a profoundly surprising response appears. Suppose you could take action in your dream to eliminate a recurring nightmare, heal a relationship, or even a physical ailment. These are what might be called big dreams, stories of life changing guidance, insight and healing; some that reach beyond the senses and even beyond death. They are presented as guideposts along our life's journey, and introduced by 22 internationally acclaimed experts, psychologists, researchers, and best-selling authors from the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD): Deirdre Barrett, Susannah Benson, Kelly Bulkeley, Laurel Clark, Gayle Delaney, Marcia Emery, Patricia Garfield, Robert Gongloff, Bob Haden, Robert Hoss, Ed Kellogg, Stanley Krippner, Justina Lasley, Jacquie E. Lewis, Tallulah Lyons, Wendy Pannier, Alan Siegel, Carlyle Smith, Gregory Scott Sparrow, Jeremy Taylor, Robert Waggoner and moi, Kelly Sullivan Walden. On the show today, we talk about some of his favorite stories--these dream tales will inspire you, make you cry, uplift your soul, make you never again take your dreams lying down! Here's more about my favorite Dream Scientist: Robert Hoss, MS is author of Dream Language, Officer and former President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, Director of the DreamScience foundation for research grants, advisory board of the Soul Medicine Institute and Haden Institute faculty member. Formerly a scientist, and researcher in the field of optical communications, he was a pioneer with multiple patents and the Corporate Vice President for Global Telecommunications at both American Express and IBM. He now devotes his science and management skills to dream studies. He was recently featured in the PBS Dreamtime TV special, and in Readers Digest, Prevention Magazine and USA Today.

Ever wondered what your children’s dreams really means? Current scientific research shows that children's brains are hard-wired to generate intensely creative dreams. Dr. Kelly Bulkeley’s latest book, Children’s Dreams, shows parents, teachers, and therapists how to analyze and interpret these kinds of dreams in a way that reveals their deep roots in the spiritual wisdom of a child's developing imagination. Join Dr. Bulkeley and me on Tuesday, June 11, 10-11 A.M. US., to learn the simple and easily applied method of analyzing your children’s dreams.
Parents aren't always sure how to talk to their children about dreams, and children aren't always sure about how to describe their dreams. Tom Stevens, LPC-S, RPT-S is excited to welcome authors Kelly Bulkeley and Patricia M Bulkley to the show, to talk about the findings in their book titled "Children's Dreams". Their book introduces readers to the basic psychology and neuroscience of dreaming, then offers practical advice on understanding dreams from early childhood through adolescence.
