On this day, 14th March 1553, a Tudor bishop passed away in Bangor, leaving behind a legacy that shaped religious life in Wales. But who was he, and why does his story matter?   From his time as chaplain to the Duke of Suffolk to his unexpected fall from favour with Thomas Cromwell, Arthur Bulkeley's career was anything but ordinary. In an era of religious upheaval, he made a bold decision that set him apart from his predecessors—one that would change the way faith was practised in his diocese.   Why was Bulkeley's approach so radical? And what lasting impact did he have on the Church in Wales?   Join me as we uncover the story of Arthur Bulkeley, the Bishop of Bangor who broke with tradition. The brilliant Vienna biologist, Paul Kammerer was found dead by questionable suicide. How did his pre-Jung study of coincidences create the backlash against him that may have contributed to his death? Seeking scientific rather than metaphysical explanations still created a hostile environment. Too mystical for many. His seriality differs from synchronicity. While synchronicity usually involves a mental event and an objective event, seriality always involves the possibility that the two or more events making up the coincidence are observable by someone other than the experiencer. Early on you will hear an extraordinary serial coincidence involving two women named Nadia--one in the 1920s and another in the near present. How did these two women end up being so similar? Jason Bulkeley served in the DoD as a translator and intelligence analyst during the Cold War and has a degree in English and Linguistics from UMBC. He translated and published numerous books from Russian to English on scientific and human-interest topics. He ran a restaurant for over 20 years, which spurred his interest in coincidence and synchronicity by connecting with interesting people from all over the world. He now has an international online store on Ebay specializing in rare books on philosophy, history, and metaphysical topics. He recently published the first English translation of The Law of Seriality by Paul Kammerer, the first comprehensive study of the theory of coincidence, written in 1919. In 1741, amidst the treacherous waters of Cape Horn, on the southernmost tip of South America, the British warship HMS Wager pushed through a violent storm, hoping to carry out a mission against the Spanish to alleviate them of one it's trade ships, enriched with gold and silver, and bring the bounty home to England. It was a time of great pomp amongst the British Navy, whose continual wars with the Spanish were prompting the great rise of British Sea Power. Surely nothing could possibly go wrong. Years later, the same men sent out to fight the Spanish, were arriving back on English shores, after making a perilous escape attempt from a deserted island, following a harrowing ordeal of starvation, disease, and mutiny and murder. Far from the great victory that the admiralty had imagined, it had instead turned into a nightmarish tale of human endurance in the face of the bleakest of situations. Laura and Dave go head-to-head with an AI trained to interpret dreams. Who (or what) comes up with the most meaningful interpretations? You decide! Elswhere is a dream journaling app that offers interpretations powered by a GPT (generative pre-trained transformer), otherwise known as a generative AI. Kelly Bulkeley and Sheldon Juncker have been instrumental in creating and training Elsewhere to interpret dreams, and they come aboard the Dream Boat to discuss the intersection of technology and dreaming, specifically the use of AI in dream interpretation. The guests discuss the accuracy and insights provided by the AI interpretations, which draw on the work of Freud and Jung, among others. In an extended “Dream of the Week” segment, Sheldon shares a dream for Dave and Laura to explore and interpret, and then the group hears what Elsewhere had to say about it. What will the influence of AI be on dream interpretation, and are there potential benefits of using AI as a tool for self-reflection and understanding? Hopefully it's collaboration, not competition.  Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D., is a dream researcher and author with a background in the psychology of religion. He is director of the Sleep and Dream Database (as discussed on episode 2 of this series of the Dream Boat), a Senior Editor of the APA journal Dreaming, and a former President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams.  Sheldon Juncker, B.Sc. is a software engineer who works in the fields of dream research, data analysis, and artificial intelligence, who in addition to his work with Dr Bulkeley on Elsewhere also helps to maintain the Sleep and Dream Database. fWotD Episode 2524: Morgan Bulkeley Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Tuesday, 2 April 2024 is Morgan Bulkeley.Morgan Gardner Bulkeley (December 26, 1837 – November 6, 1922) was an American politician of the Republican Party, businessman, and insurance executive. In 1876, he served as the first president of baseball's National League and because of that, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937, a choice that remains controversial, since his time as a baseball executive was short.Bulkeley was born in East Haddam, Connecticut. His father was Judge Eliphalet Adams Bulkeley, a prominent local lawyer and businessman, who became the first president of the Aetna Life Insurance Company. The family moved to Hartford, where Morgan Bulkeley was educated, before he took a job in the city of Brooklyn, New York. He served briefly in the American Civil War, where he saw no combat. When his father died in 1872, he moved back to Hartford and became a bank president and a board member of Aetna, becoming its president in 1879, a post he held the rest of his life. When the Hartford Dark Blues baseball team was asked to join the new National League in 1876, Bulkeley, the team president, was asked to become league president, despite having a minimum of baseball experience. He served one season, though most work was done by Chicago White Stockings owner William Hulbert. Bulkeley also served on the Hartford Common Council and in 1880 was elected to the first of four two-year terms as mayor of Hartford. He was elected Governor of Connecticut, taking office in 1889. He was not renominated by the Republicans, but served a second two-year term because the houses of the state legislature could not agree on the outcome of the 1890 election. Holding over in office after the end of his elected term, the entry to the executive offices at the State House were locked against him, and he had it opened with a crowbar, thus earning the nickname, "the Crowbar Governor". He left office in 1893, and served one term as U. S. senator from Connecticut from 1905 to 1911. In his final years he remained involved with civic and philanthropic activities. After his death in 1922, several structures in Hartford, including a bridge and a high school, were named for him. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:31 UTC on Tuesday, 2 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Morgan Bulkeley on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Joey Neural.

In this final episode of our American Alchemy series, we explore the term 'The Christian Alchemists' coined by Walter Woodward, encompassing a diverse group of practitioners with varying religious affiliations. A key figure among them was Gershom Bulkeley, an alchemist, pastor, and physician from Massachusetts. Despite his skepticism towards astrology, Bulkeley was deeply involved in Paracelsian medicine, compiling an extensive library of alchemical works and passing on his knowledge to his children. The episode delves into the lesser-known alchemists of the 17th century New England, including Robert Childe, Elias Ashmole, and others who straddled various fields from alchemy and Rosicrucianism to astronomy and medicine. Their complex beliefs and practices reveal the multifaceted nature of the intellectual landscape in early American colonies. We also examine the alchemical practices of individuals like Thomas Vaughan, who, despite his religious leanings, immersed himself in mysticism and alchemical studies. His deeply personal and tragic narrative with his wife Rebecca illustrates the intertwining of love, loss, and the pursuit of esoteric knowledge. The story of John Jacob Zimmerman and his successor Johannes Kelpius sheds light on the Society of the Woman in the Wilderness and the Ephrata Cloister, communities devoted to astrology, sacred music, and esoteric Christianity. Their unique practices and beliefs represent an offshoot of the Rosicrucian movement in America. The episode concludes with a reflection on the waning influence of alchemy as a cultural force in the colonies by the 18th century, giving way to more orthodox forms of Christianity. However, the alchemical and astrological roots of early colonial America left an indelible mark on American cultural identity, showcasing the nation's ongoing fascination with transformation, both spiritual and material. This narrative of American Alchemy, blending science, mysticism, and spirituality, highlights the complex and often contradictory foundations of early American society and its enduring legacy.SELECTED READING: “The Intelligencers and the Fifth Moon of Jupiter: Alchemy in the American Colonies” by Kimberly Nichols via Newtopia Magazine (Oct 2012)YOUR FAVORITE MYSTICAL BEDTIME STORY PODCAST: Can't sleep? Accidental Gods
The Road to Glasgow: Climate Pilgrimages converging on COP26 with Bamber Hawes and Benjamin Christie.

COP26 takes place in Glasgow, Scotland in November of this year.  This is our best  - possibly our last - chance to persuade those who govern the world that the climate and ecological emergency needs swift and radical action.  So how can we get the message through to those who are driving our collective bus that they need to turn the wheel before we all hurtle over a cliff?  How can we persuade them that 'business as usual' is no longer an option, or that alternatives do exist if we only had the creativity, imagination, courage and empathy to make them work? This week, we speak to two people involved in two separate Pilgrimages to Glasgow to find out what they're planning and why. Benjamin Christie is driven by the deeply held belief in the possibility of a more equitable, sustainable and harmonious world. He works to support NGOs and ethical businesses develop and achieve their goals. With a career spanning events, media and business development, Benjamin has been fortunate enough to gain experience of many different countries, environments and partnerships at first hand.  He's speaking on behalf of the SPINE OF ALBION Pilgrimage which is walking from the southernmost tip of England to the northernmost tip of Scotland - through Glasgow at the time of COP26. Links to his work and activities include: http://www.listeningtotheland.com/https://medicinefestival.com/https://www.wisdomkeepers.earth/Bamber Hawes says of himself that he is 'a Thing Maker'. He trained as an Industrial Designer in Sussex, then moved to London and had various companies making furniture, building sets and film props, art directing and modelmaking. In 2005, after 22 years living in Hackney just off the Murder Mile he 'ran away from his annoying media clients' to Bishop's Castle in South Shropshire, where he now is a picture framer, furniture maker, artist and Art Co ordinator for an Art Trail and is a Town Councillor. Now, he has created CLARION, a 10 foot Polar Bear made to be portable. He and Clarion will be walking from his home in Bishop's Castle to Glasgow in time for COP.  Instagram:   @clarion_the_bearFacebook:   Clarion_the_BearTwitter:       @BearClarion     His call to those who might want to join him is this: Calling anyone who would like to be part of a commitment to our living, breathing Earth and the future of all life. I am organising a Climate Crisis Pilgrimage from South Shropshire to the COP26 climate talks that starts on 1st November in Glasgow. Would you be interested in joining me for a day of walking as I progress northward?I will be doing the whole 306 mile walk which will take 22 days.  Each day I will be joined by local people from the area that I have reached. The unusual thing is that I will be accompanied by a ten foot high sculpture of a polar bear, that I have made.  The bear, called Clarion, is made from thin bamboo poles, willow withies and many layers of heavy duty tissue paper bonded together with waterproof PVA.  He is carried on a palanquin.              He ain't heavy! I am looking for people to join me for a day walking along footpaths, bridle paths, canal towpaths and B roads.  The intention for this pilgrimage is to come together to walk, to talk, to connect with each other, to connect with the landscape by moving through it slowly, admiring its beauty and grandeur.  To be positive and kind, and to build active hope. To smile and laugh while being serious.Walking to the climate talks will not change the world ~ but I can think of nothing better to do to show the earnestness of my belief that we must learn to talk together and build community, only in Oneness will we make a better more just world.   Clarion and I will be coming through your area on these dates:DAY ONE 10th October    Bishop's Castle to LongdenDAY TWO 11th October    Longden to Platt LaneDAY THREE 12th October    Platt Lane to BulkeleyDAY FOUR 13th October    Bulkeley to KingsleyDAY FIVE 14th October    Kingsley to RainhillDAY SIX 15th October    Rainhill to Appleby BridgeDAY SEVEN 16th October    Appleby Bridge to MiddleforthDAY EIGHT 17th October    Middleforth to GarstangDAY NINE  18th October    Garstang to LancasterDAY TEN  19th October    Lancaster to HincasterDAY ELEVEN 20th October    Hincaster to SadgillDAY TWELVE 21st October    Sadgill to AskhamDAY THIRTEEN 22nd October    Askham to CalthwaiteDAY FOURTEEN 23rd October    Calthwaite to CargoDAY FIFTEEN  24th October    Carge to Stapleton GrangeDAY SIXTEEN  25th October    Stapleton Grange to LockerbieDAY SEVENTEEN  26th October    Lockerbie to MosslandsDAY EIGHTEEN  27th October    Mosslands to ElvanfootDAY NINETEEN  28th October    Elvanfoot to DouglasDAY TWENTY  29th October    Douglas to StrathavenDAY TWENTY ONE 30th  October    Strathaven to BusbyDAY TWENTY TWO  31st October    Day offDAY TWENTY THREE  1st November    Busby to COP26 The complete itinerary will be on Facebook soon : Clarion the Bear So, please consider coming along as a treasured, intrepid pilgrim.I assure you this will not be a shouty, banner waving demonstrating rabble. This pilgrimage will be in the media, and I am sure it will be praised and vilified. If you are not a walker perhaps you would like to still be part of this by being a driver, delivering walkers at the start of the day and/or collecting them at the end. Contact me on Social media or on 07957 667 847 No small children, no dogs, no alcohol. Thank you Bamber the Human and Clarion the Bear

In this episode, we talk with Professor Harriet Bulkely about the effectiveness of different approaches to climate governance and the possibility of a green recovery. Climate governance is particularly complex because of the need for urgency, yet as with any governance, it needs buy-in. She contrasts climate action at the city level vs. national and multi-national efforts and talks about top-down vs. bottom-up approaches, and in particular on the power of cities and communities adopting climate initiatives of their own choosing and solving in ways that fit with the local needs. Professor Harriet Bulkely holds joint appointments as Professor in the Department of Geography at Durham University and at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development Utrecht University. Her research focuses on environmental governance and the politics of climate change, energy and emerging urban management approaches to climate change. She's published 8 books and more than 60 research papers.

Keeping a fleet ready for war is a process of years of careful, consistent, and sustained stewardship of both personnel and material. The easiest parts are the buying of equipment and recruiting new people. The hard parts, maintenance, training, and retention – mostly because they are hard – rarely break in to the open. For our fleet, the structure we live in is the Optimized Fleet Response Plan (OFRP). It is a system few understand well, but is one designed around a peace time “efficiency” with only a passing interest in wartime “effectiveness.”Decades of dominance at sea has provided the US Navy the luxury of such, but as China expands her fleet at an alarming rate – do we need a new construct? Our guest for the full hour to discuss this and related topics will be Bryan McGrath, CDR USN (Ret.).Bryan McGrath grew up in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1987. Dreams! Nightmares! Demons! What were the role of these concepts in ancient Egypt? The Answers may surprise you... Dr Kasia Szpakowska is an Associate Professor of Egyptology at Swansea University, and Director of The Ancient Egyptian Demonology Project for The Leverhulme Trust. Kasia’s research is especially fascinating for me, as it focuses on Ancient Egyptian private religious practices, so not necessarily the practices of the elites, though it does include them…but the practices of everyday Egyptians. She is also a leading expert and author of several volumes on dreams, demons and the archaeology of magic in ancient Egypt and her work provides unique insights into the mindset of the ancient Egyptian in ways we cannot accomplish just by looking at artefacts. Now I should point out that when we mention magic in the context of ancient Egypt, it wasn’t seen as something occult or weird in ancient Egyptian culture. Magic was as much a part of daily life and religion as any other practice or response to their often frightening and dangerous world. It’s not until much later, with the advent of monotheism that we see a separation of magic from religion and the subsequent fall from grace of magic into something either false, as in trickery, or ungodly and unholy. We also touch on something that I’ve become much more aware of in my life of late which is narcolepsy and what seem to be ancient Egyptian spells which may have been responses to this condition. If you or anyone you know is suffering from sleep paralysis (as terrifyingly portrayed in the recent Netflix show, the Haunting of Hill House) or thinks you may have narcolepsy symptoms, I’ve included a link in the show notes to Narcolepsy UK, a leading UK charity where you can get more information on this condition. But returning to the headline of the show, which is dreams, and indeed nightmares and demons from ancient Egypt, I know that academic papers and books can be difficult to get a hold of when you’re not at University and Kasia has very kindly made many of her papers available for FREE on a website called academia.edu. As ever, you can find links in the show notes at Podbean on Facebook and on iTunes and YouTube.  And if you dig this episode, be sure to check out the Demon Things website, and the DemonBase Catalogue where you can search these bizarre and fascinating entities and learn more about them! This on demand audio series is a part of the Executive Girlfriends Group Vignette Series. Chicke Fitzgerald interviews leadership visionary Susan Bulkeley Butler. The original live interview was 5/25/12. In Women Count: A Guide to Changing the World, Butler shows how the world can become a better place in myriad ways with more involvement from women. Today's world—with its wars, corporate ethics violations, economic meltdowns and societal strife—needs the unique strengths and attributes of women more than ever, Butler contends. Together, women must envision equality, build teams, take action, and help one another through mentoring, philanthropy, education and public service, according to Butler. Then, and only then, she asserts, can women truly change the world and become "women who count." Susan is CEO of The Susan Bulkeley Butler Institute for the Development of Women Leaders. Prior to founding the Institute, Susan established herself as an accomplished business leader who shaped her career at Accenture, the world's leading management consulting, technology services and outsourcing organization. She joined Arthur Andersen & Co. as its first professional female employee in 1965, and 14 years later, was named the first female partner of its consulting organization, Andersen Consulting, now known as Accenture.
