Beth Rodden escaped her kidnappers, and pushed her body to its limit, following the climber code of whatever hurts makes you stronger. She married her boyfriend Tommy Caldwell, who had saved them by pushing their captor off a cliff in the Kyrgyz mountains. They became the first couple to free climb the Nose in Yosemite National Park. To the world she was a record-breaking athlete, but inside she was crumbling, haunted by that moment in the mountains. It would take her 15 years to face it head on, and in doing so she redefined what it meant to be a climber.Beth's book A Light Through the Cracks: A Climber's Story is out now.Clips are from NPR and the Associated Press.Presenter: Emily Webb Producer: Louise MorrisGet in touch: liveslessordinary@bbc.co.uk or WhatsApp: 0044 330 678 2784
Legendary climber Beth Rodden has accomplished so much in her incredible career - and is now also bravely shared her personal journey of growth. I sat down with Beth to hear about her experiences navigating professional climbing as a woman, the highs and challenges of achieving big goals, and how becoming a mother completely shifted her perspective. Beth is one of the best female rock climbers of all time, the youngest woman to conquer 5.14a, and a globally recognized ambassador for the outdoor community. She's also a mother, and an author. Her new memoir, ‘A Light Through the Cracks: A Climber's Story,' vulnerably recounts her harrowing experience with trauma and kidnapping and her healing process. For any athletes, parents or anyone pursuing self-discovery, I hope you'll be inspired by Beth's wisdom on finding balance, speaking your truth, and embracing vulnerability. It was so powerful to chat with Beth - I know you'll enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Here are a few key takeaways: - Navigating professional climbing as a woman and the evolution of the industry towards greater inclusivity and respect. - The importance of owning one's story, finding one's voice, and speaking out against injustice, even when it's scary - The challenges of achieving big goals and deriving a sense of self-worth solely from accomplishments - How parenthood can shift one's priorities, sense of purpose, and relationships with others and one's body in a life-changing way. - Healing from trauma and learning to embrace vulnerability and emotions through therapy, relationships, and personal reflection. Beth Rodden first started climbing in 1995, and it wasn't long before she radically changed the sport. Within three years, she'd become the first woman to climb 5.14; within five, she'd established a still unrepeated free route on Yosemite's El Capitan. Today, Beth is making waves in a different way: by leading the climbing community in difficult, vulnerable conversations. Fitz chats with Beth about her new book, A Light Through the Cracks, and what it means to live a big life. California's Central Coast is the ancestral homeland of indigenous California tribes including the Chumash and Salinan peoples. For years, the Northern Chumash have been working to create a new marine sanctuary. If the federal government approves that designation this summer, California would be home to the first national marine sanctuary nominated by, and named after, an indigenous tribe. It's the culmination of decades of tribal conservation work. And, as reporter Benjamin Purper tells us, it's also the legacy of a father and daughter. Later, we talk to professional rock climber Beth Rodden who has conquered some of the most treacherous climbs in the world. She was the first woman to complete two routes up Yosemite's famous El Capitan, with no gear helping to pull her up. But despite her success, she's battled raging self-doubt and multiple injuries. Rodden spoke to KQED's Bianca Taylor about her new memoir, A Light Through the Cracks: A Climber's Story. Finally, we're revisiting a story from our Hidden Gems series about an old-school Los Angeles diner called Dinah's, which closed its doors at the end of April. A developer bought the restaurant site and announced ambitious plans for new construction. Dinah's is reopening as a new kind of restaurant in Culver City, but it's the end of an era for the diner that's been serving customers for more than six decades in the same location near the LA airport. Climbing royalty. Beth Rodden's impact on climbing from the late 90s to the late 00s was huge. She pushed forward female standards in sport and trad, did early free ascents on El cap, and established a crack testpiece where ascents still make the news. Injuries led to a stepping back, motherhood followed and she has now written her autobiography, A Light Through the Cracks.
Today's guest is a climbing icon and legend: the great Beth Rodden. Beth was a youth national comp champ who went on to become one of the greatest female climbers of her time, with important first free ascents of El Cap and single-pitch trad test pieces such as Meltdown, a 5.14c crack that many say is harder and took a decade before it was repeated. Her new book is called A Light Through the Cracks. But first we talk about the elusive “all-around” climber, with Bronwyn Hodgins at the top of mind. What does it take to be considered a great all-around climber? And is that the future for what we demand of our top-end climbers? Today's final bit comes courtesy of the extremely talented Beezer (aka Mason Earle) with the track Loggersports. In today's episode we are talking about stepping out on faith. We read an excerpt from my journal (Jan 2021), where I'm at my wits end dealing with Jevonne's lies and shenanigans regarding his infidelity. I was struggling with being "still" and called upon my Father in Heaven to SHOW me what I needed to SEE in that moment. We also read excerpts from the chapter, "Get Out of the Boat" from my wife's book, "The Light Through the Darkness." And I talk about my struggle with getting out of the boat to finally trust God fully, and have faith that He could (and would) love me, forgive me, and show me the grace I needed to lead me out of my own indiscretions and hell I had been living in and putting my wife through. Having faith and "getting out of the boat" looked different for the both of us... but it was KEY to the transformation that ultimately came to us individually and as a couple for the restoration and renewal of our marriage. We hope this message resonates with those of you that are struggling with faith and searching for the hope and strength to push forward in the fight to save your marriage. If this episode resonates with you, we would greatly appreciate it if you would rate and leave a review. And if you know of someone that would benefit from this discussion please share it with them. In today's episode we are talking about the energy you feed. When going through infidelity (or any trial in marriage for that matter) we need to learn how to focus our energy on the things of God rather than allow our thoughts to keep us in a place of negativity and darkness. Today I will be reading a journal entry that is much different from those that I've read thus far... and the excerpt from my book, "The Light Through the Darkness" gives more detail on how what we focus on we get more of. When we sit in the "muck" and allow our thoughts to focus on the negativity, we will continue to stay stagnant rather than progress forward. And one thing is for sure, the adversary loves to bring us more pain and negativity. We pray this episode will help those of you that find yourselves sitting in the negative space in your mind, dwelling on and replaying the negative thoughts, will find your way out by focusing on the light our Savior Jesus Christ can provide-- even while sitting in the darkness. In today's episode, it's all about letting go and letting GOD fight your battles! It's easy to "say" that we're going to let go and let God handle it, but it's a whole different ballgame when you start putting the words to action. It's not as easy as it seems and takes consistent faith to really let go. I'll be reading an excerpt in the section "Letting Go" from my book, "The Light Through the Darkness," and a journal entry from January 2021 when I realized how to finally give everything over to God, take the focus off my husband, and solely start to focus on me. Because that is the only way that you will truly be able to start the healing process and completely let go. We hope this episode resonates with those of you working towards rebuilding trust and praying for restoration in your marriage. We know how hard it can be, but please know if you really want to save your marriage it CAN be done- with God all things are possible! Today we're going to show you a little more about what healing "looks like" as we read another entry from my journal (2021) and an excerpt from my book, "The Light Through the Darkness" where I talk about how I learned to "Fight the Right Way." In this episode I share my real feelings around "being enough" and my fears as to if Jevonne would ever choose to "change" in order to save our marriage. We talk about how sometimes being SILENT and STILL is the ultimate clap back! And how I chose to move when others tried their hardest to come in between us, destroy all that we had built together and what we were working hard to repair. We hope what we share in this episode will help those of you going through something similar and show you that anything is possible with God! If you both put Him first, ask Him to fix what's broken, proceed to do the work, then give it over to Him... He will be in the background working it out for your good- even when you don't SEE or FEEL Him working. In today's episode we're reading another journal entry from January 2021, as well as sharing an excerpt from my wife's book, "The Light Through the Darkness." We'll be talking about the "The Lessons" she was given from God and the whisper she received from the Holy Spirit that said, "It's Not About You" and the clarity it gave her in that moment to see our situation from a completely different POV. We hope listening to our raw conversation about that devastating time in our life (now 5 years removed) will resonate with you, give you guidance, and clarity in your marriage/relationship. And we hope this episode helps you to see that it's okay to get real and raw in talking about your relationship in order to unpack what is "really" going on behind the issues you might be experiencing. Historian Gabrielle Earnshaw is the founding archivist of the Henri Nouwen Archives in Toronto, Canada. She has been the adviser to the Henri Nouwen Legacy Trust for eighteen years and is consulted throughout the world on Nouwen and his literary legacy. She is the editor of several of Nouwen's posthumously published books, including Love, Henri (a collection of Nouwen's letters), You Are the Beloved (a collection of daily meditations), and the newly published Following Jesus: Finding Our Way Home in an Age of Anxiety, based on lectures Nouwen gave at Harvard University in the 1980s. Gabrielle Earnshaw In our conversation, Earnshaw shares not only her insights into the spiritual and literary legacy of Henri Nouwen, but also her own journey into the spirituality of silence — and how curating Nouwen's archives helped her along the way. Henri Nouwen with his dear friend, Sr. Sue Mosteller Henri Nouwen spoke about silence in every book; it's not like he had one book on silence — it's in every book... it was really important to him... one of the most important themes in his writing. — Gabrielle Earnshaw Some of the resources and authors we mention in this episode: Henri Nouwen, Love, Henri: Letters on the Spiritual Life Henri Nouwen, You Are the Beloved: Daily Meditations for Spiritaul Living Henri Nouwen, Following Jesus: Finding Our Way Home in an Age of Anxiety Henri Nouwen, The Way of the Heart: Connecting with God Through Prayer, Wisdom and Silence Henri Nouwen, Encounters with Merton: Spiritual Reflections Henri Nouwen, The Genesee Diary: Report from a Trappist Monastery Henri Nouwen, Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming Henri Nouwen, The Wounded Healer: Ministry in Contemporary Society Henri Nouwen, The Road to Daybreak: A Spiritual Journey John Main, Word Into Silence: A Manual for Christian Meditation Laurence Freeman, Web of Silence: Letters to Meditators Jean Vanier, Tears of Silence: A Meditation Sue Mosteller, Light Through the Crack: Life After Loss Sue Mosteller, A Place to Hold my Shaky Heart: Reflections from Life in Community Sue Mosteller, My Brother, my Sister Thomas Merton, Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander Desert Wisdom: Sayings from the Desert Fathers (introduction by Henri Nouwen) Ronald Rolheiser, The Holy Longing: The Search for a Christian Spirituality Thomas Keating, Intimacy with God: An Introduction to Centering Prayer This is part one of a two-part interview.
