If anyone knows dogs are man's best friend, it's Rachel Shirley. Rachel has a very unique, yet much needed ministry: as a grief counselor, she walks people through the loss of their pet. Since she was very young, Rachel has always had a love for animals. Today, refers to her beloved boxers as her "fur babies". While her love for animals is intrinsic to her personality, Rachel observed an even more profound gift within herself: the ability to walk with people through hard times. Having experienced grief in her own life, she has taken what she learned during those hard seasons to extend empathy and compassion for those navigating their grief journey. Rachel finds that many people are taken aback by the depth of the grief they experience when a pet passes away. The emotional dependence forged between constant touch, eye contact and presence can result in a relationship as strong--or sometimes even stronger--than our human ones. Losing a beloved pet is one of the most intense experiences that many people have to live through. For others, it's a form of trauma that can take many years to recover from. Pat Blocker and Sarah Pellizzari have joined forces to write “Beyond the Last Walk: Saying Goodbye, Navigating Grief, and Healing After the Loss of a Dog.” Pat Blocker is an animal communicator, Sarah is a clinical social worker, and both are professional dog trainers. Together, they bridge the gap between science and spirituality to help others recover so that they may be able to love another pet again. The global pet market is worth $261B. Additionally, U.S. pet owners will spend nearly $110B on their pets this year, with $490M on Halloween costumes alone. These stats (and more) are shared on this week's episode and are provided by PetKeen.com.More importantly, there are an estimated 14 million pet deaths each year in the U.S., which, when combined with the other 40+ losses, creates a lot of grievers annually. It's commonplace to replace the death of a pet with a new one. And as a society, we don't view the death of a beloved pet in the same way we view the death of the humans in our lives. However, all the same, the death of a pet can be a tremendous loss for someone. Considering how much we love our pets and how many of us are pet owners, you would think we would be more compassionate toward those who must surrender or say goodbye to a companion who held a pivotal role in their daily lives. And yet, there is still so much education to be done in grief - even when grieving a four-legged fur baby, bird, snake, or whatever creature has captured your heart. Have you made a mistake while trying to help a loved one cope with grief? Have you been the one who has lost someone and the missteps of others caused you twinges of pain. I think we all have. Grief isn't easy and its not something many of us are good at. Today's conversation is a continuation of the conversation we started last week, so if you haven't already heard episode 59- be sure to start there. Today we get deeper into how to support someone who is grieving the loss of an animal, and how when you have an animal who is like family you are grieving family when that loss happens. It's not a loss that can be easily fixed. Sometimes it seems there are more things you can say wrong than you can say right. Authenticity, setting boundaries, and finding the right community and people for support is key. Our guest vulnerably shares what she went through as she sought grace when she lost her soul companion and talks about saying the thing that is most true for you and leaving judgement out of the conversation. Grief isn't about judgement.I hope this conversation resonates with you and that you feel supported wherever you are in the grieving process and whomever you've lost whether they walk on two legs or four. Take a minute to head on over to Instagram, follow us and share with us about someone dear to you that you've lost. Bereavement is the state of being emotionally overwhelmed due to such loss and it is considered normal.Experiencing the death of a beloved one can be one of life's most devastating events, leaving a profound and lasting impact. When a beloved pet passes away, it is understandable to feel immense grief and sorrow due to the strong bond that has been created. A lot of people consider their furry friends to be as close as family members, so these emotions are perfectly normal.Relationships with our animalsThe grief experienced from the death of a beloved pet can be just as profound as the sorrow of losing a human family member. The bond between humans and animals is quite remarkable as they provide unconditional love and companionship. In return for their loyalty and companionship, we give our pets the love and care they need in order to thrive. Pets can provide us with a feeling of home, safety and identity. If we lose them, the disruption to our lives is significant; they keep our secrets and offer us unconditional love - no matter what.Losing a pet can be even more traumatic than losing a human loved-one. Human decline is left to run it's course and can lead to suffering, long term illness and pain, and often, we are relieved when our loved ones pass. The advantage of losing a pet is that we can sometimes choose the time of their passing to avoid long-term pain and illness. What does grief feel like?People often underestimate the depths of their sadness when expecting or dealing with the passing of a beloved pet. Grief can be emotionally overwhelming and can take a heavy toll on the mind & body of an individual. It may prove to be difficult to manage and cope with such intense emotions. Each person experiences grief in a different way. Even though kids and adults experience grief differently, children can feel grief as strongly as adults do. However, the way they express their grief may also be different.People typically associate grieving with a particular set of stages that progress in an orderly fashion; howevFIND ME:My Website: https://motorcityhypnotist.com/podcastMy social media links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motorcityhypnotist/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjjLNcNvSYzfeX0uHqe3gATwitter: https://twitter.com/motorcityhypnoInstagram: motorcityhypnoFREE HYPNOSIS GUIDEhttps://detroithypnotist.convertri.com/podcast-free-hypnosis-guidePlease also subscribe to the show and leave a review.(Stay with me as later in the podcast, I'll be giving away a free gift to all listeners!)Change your thinking, change your life!Laugh hard, run fast, be kind. “There were so many ways that this little being helped to bring us closer together, to teach us about love, to teach us about unconditional love.” This episode is sponsored in part by Doobet.com and Maddie's Fund. In this episode, Stacy chats with Cheryl Richardson, the author of several books and audio programs, including her recent audiobook How to Survive the Loss of a Pet, which helps listeners navigate the journey of grief, acceptance, and renewal after a pet passes. In her conversation with Stacy, Cheryl discusses the strong bond that we have with our pets and how they can play such major roles in our lives. She describes how her late cat, Poupon, taught her about love and how, towards the end of his life, the most profound act of love was to let him go as gently as possible. Cheryl discusses her book “How to Survive the Loss of a Pet”, and talks about how her role is that of a grief coach. She emphasizes the importance of giving yourself space to grieve and explains how each person handles grief differently. She believes it's critical to respect and honor your own unique way of grieving. Most importantly, Cheryl wants listeners to know that if you've lost a pet and are grieving: you are not alone and will get through this. To learn more about Cheryl and her work, visit her website. This week on the #8 ranked stress podcast we're talking about how to cope with the loss of a pet. Mindfulness and pet grief expert Sarah Chauncey shares insights about how the special connections we have with our pets creates a unique kind of grief. Her thoughtful and candid approach to being "fiercly present" through the end of a pet's life and the grief that follows the loss will help you feel understood and supported as you navigate your own pet loss or support a loved one who is grieving the loss of a furry friend. Sarah Chauncey has written and edited for nearly every medium over the past three decades, from print to television to digital. Her writing has been featured on EckhartTolle.com, Modern Loss, as well as in Lion's Roar and Canadian Living. She lives on Vancouver Island in British Columbia (with her current cat, Ariel), where she divides her time between writing, editing nonfiction, and walking in nature. Sarah writes, among other things, about navigating the grief that comes through losing a pet. By directing addressing the realities of pet relationships (they usually live only a portion of the human life span) Sarah helps us connect with the realities of grief and the opportunities we have to make the most of our time with our pets. She's had a significant mindfulness practice since 2010 and she's been writing about techniques for developing mindfulness and self-awareness since 2014; Her book, P.S. I Love You More Than Tuna takes that experience and shines it through a paw-shaped lens. You can find out more about Sarah on her website, her blog Living the Mess, her Instagram, her FB Group Tuna Tributes, or her book website morethantuna.com. Lindsay Miller is a kids mindfulness coach, mindfulness educator and host of The Stress Nanny Podcast. She is known for her suitcase tricks and playful laugh. She specializes in helping kids and athletes deal with worry so that it doesn't hold them back. Join us as we sit out in the backyard and talk openly about the under rated amount of grief we go through when losing one of our fur babies. Tara talks openly about the recent loss of her beloved family pet, 14 yr old German Shepard mix, named Kenya. Making the difficult decision to put her pet to rest came with a bit of guilt, anger and feeling of regret. If you've lost a pet you may have experienced many emotions but afraid to show them because it's not a “human” loss. In this episode we talk openly and honestly about just how valid those feelings are and how important our family fur babies are to us.
