Welcome to Rock Your Shine: After you've been cracked wide open. On this show, I sit down with people from all over the world to hear their transformational stories on their deep grief and loss journeys.  In this week's episode of Rock Your Shine podcast, guest Jason Doll, a hospice veterinarian from Lap of Love, discusses the complexities of handling pet loss.  Jason, who hails from Central Pennsylvania and studied at Tufts University Veterinary School, shares how his work focuses on end-of-life care for pets, offering a compassionate approach to a challenging process. The episode offers insights into the importance of understanding and acknowledging the grief experienced by pet owners, and the significance of considering the beloved pets as family members. Jason also emphasizes the importance of narrative medicine - focusing on patient connection beyond mere lab results. We get into issues of decision-making at the end of a pet's life, the role of veterinary teams in this process and how they can struggle with the weight of what they do. Jason highlights that veterinarians have the highest suicide rates of any medical profession, indicating a need for increased support and understanding of their work. He educates listeners about resources available for those who are saying goodbye to their pets, and the importance of supporting local veterinary services. In his dedication to honoring the humanity and humor found in life through animals, Jason expresses a sense of privilege in assisting these companions during one of their loved ones' most challenging moments. Following completion of veterinary school, he returned to his hometown in central Pennsylvania to engage in General Practice/Emergency Medicine. A particular fondness is reserved for senior pets. With a professional background in avian and zoo medicine, Jason takes pride in ensuring comfort not only for the animals but also for their human companions. The global pet market is worth $261B. Additionally, U.S. pet owners will spend nearly $110B on their pets this year, with $490M on Halloween costumes alone. These stats (and more) are shared on this week's episode and are provided by PetKeen.com.More importantly, there are an estimated 14 million pet deaths each year in the U.S., which, when combined with the other 40+ losses, creates a lot of grievers annually. It's commonplace to replace the death of a pet with a new one. And as a society, we don't view the death of a beloved pet in the same way we view the death of the humans in our lives. However, all the same, the death of a pet can be a tremendous loss for someone. Considering how much we love our pets and how many of us are pet owners, you would think we would be more compassionate toward those who must surrender or say goodbye to a companion who held a pivotal role in their daily lives. And yet, there is still so much education to be done in grief - even when grieving a four-legged fur baby, bird, snake, or whatever creature has captured your heart. Hello all you Hollyweirdos As many of you have heard, we lost our beloved Hollyweird mascot and pet, Mia, unexpectedly.  She was one of the most loving animals that we were so lucky to have in our life and we are deeply saddened that we no longer have her here with us.  Through the grief and loss of Mia, we decided to process this loss with an episode discussing pet loss, grief, and the afterlife of animals. On today's episode, we dive into the fascinating topic of the afterlife of animals and explore pet loss and grief with paranormal researcher and author, Nicole Strickland.  Strickland is one of the leading West Coast afterlife & paranormal researchers.  She's the founder and director of the well-respected San Diego Paranormal Research Society and California Coordinator of the Ghost Research Society.  Nicole is also a consultant to the American Spectral Association.    Nicole holds a B.A. degree in Media Arts / Journalism from the University of Arizona and an M.S. in Educational Counseling from National University.  She plans to pursue a PhD in Parapsychology. Nicole has written several books, including Field Guide to Southern California Hauntings, The Haunted Queen of the Seas: The Living Legend of the RMS Queen Mary, Spirited Queen Mary: Her Haunted Legend, RMS Queen Mary: Voices from Her Voyages, San Diego's Most Haunted: The Historical Legacy and Paranormal Marvels of America's Finest City, Spirits of Rancho Buena Vista Adobe, Max and Kayli: Two Remarkable Felines Forever Imprinted On My Heart, The Afterlife Chronicles: Exploring the Connection between Life, Death and Beyond (2022) and Women on the Fringe: Groundbreaking Women in the Paranormal with Marie D. Jones and Denise Agnew. (Black Spot Books 2023). Have you ever wondered what happens to our furry friends once they cross over the rainbow bridge? Well, grab your iced coffee or tea and get ready for a wild ride as we delve into animal ghosts with Strickland. While the concept may seem far-fetched to some, many pet owners believe they have encountered spiritual visitations from their departed companions. Whether it's catching glimpses of them out of the corner of your eye or hearing familiar noises around the house, these experiences can bring immense comfort during times of grief. So let's buckle up for an emotional rollercoaster as we chat about our beloved pets' extraordinary ability to stay by our side even after their physical presence has passed on.
