We were shocked to discover that 1987's Adventures in Babysitting doesn't have a DVD or Blu Ray audio commentary. After interviewing screenwriter David Simkins in 2022, we asked if he would be willing to record an audio commentary for Adventures in Babysitting and, to our delight, he agreed to do it. In typical NWPP fashion, the recording didn't go exactly as planned. At roughly 6 minutes into the movie, the audio of the film can be heard during the commentary. We've done our best to reduce the film's audio track but it was impossible to totally remove it. We recommend turning the audio down on your TV or device, and let our audio take over. One other call out, we recorded the audio commentary watching the PG-13 version of the movie not the one on Disney+. Enough with the caveats. David shares funny and insightful behind-the-scenes stories and talks about how the movie came together including working with Debra Hill and Lynda Obst. We discuss the challenges of shooting both in Chicago and Canada. David talks about how the famous blues bar scene came together, casting Elizabeth Shue, working with Chris Columbus and how Sara's obsession with Thor came to be. It's We believe this is the only audio commentary available for Adventures in Babysitting. We can't thank David Simkins enough for agreeing to do this with us. We hope you enjoy.

Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode explore big budget flops, from Ishtar to Cats. Ishtar – writer and director Elaine May's huge budget comedy starring Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman – was released in May 1987. The film, about a pair of incompetent singer-songwriters who become entangled in a CIA plot in north Africa, tanked at the box office and ultimately put paid to May's directing career. In the process the word Ishtar became a joke - that title alone symbolising Hollywood hubris at its worst. But, as May put it, "If all the people who hate Ishtar had seen it, I would be a rich woman." Thirty five years on, Mark asks culture critic Lindsay Zoladz and comedian and director Richard Ayoade whether Ishtar is ripe for reappraisal. And Ellen draws up a set of rules to help Hollywood studio bosses avoid box office bombs in 2022, running them past Film Stories founder Simon Brew and Hollywood super-producer Lynda Obst. Also, controversial director Gaspar Noe shares his Viewing Notes. Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

Wrenn sits down with Peter Mehlman, a writer and producer most notably known for a little show called Seinfeld. You may have heard of it. Peter tells Wrenn the unique way he originally got the job writing for Seinfeld and what it was like working for Jerry and Larry David. They discuss an event Wrenn attended at Peter's house with Lynda Obst and a few quantum physicists smarter than both of them. Wrenn and Peter bond over hating the victim mentality and Peter gives advice on how to own the room when you go in for pitch meetings. Peter reminisces on a particular pitch meeting with Woody Allen. They discuss Peter's art collection and why he loves LA so much. Peter ponders writing a letter to murderers in jail and it freaks Wrenn out. Finally, Wrenn makes Peter tell a real life story that ended up on an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm's latest season and how luck plays a huge part in your success. The 91st Academy Awards take place on Sunday in Los Angeles, but international markets, led by China, have eclipsed the domestic market in importance for the US movie industry, rewriting the rules about what kinds of films get made. On this week’s Deep Dish podcast, Lynda Obst, producer of Sleepless in Seattle, Contact, Interstellar, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and Orville Schell of the Asia Society join Brian Hanson to discuss how China is changing the US box office.

I remember vividly hosting a colloquium speaker, about fifteen years ago, who talked about the LIGO gravitational-wave observatory, which had just started taking data. Comparing where they were to where they needed to get to in terms of sensitivity, the mumblings in the audience after the talk were clear: “They’ll never make it.” Of course we now know that they did, and the 2016 announcement of the detection of gravitational waves led to a 2017 Nobel Prize for Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne, and Barry Barish. So it’s a great pleasure to have Kip Thorne himself as a guest on the podcast. Kip tells us a bit about he LIGO story, and offers some strong opinions about the Nobel Prize. But he’s had a long and colorful career, so we also talk about whether it’s possible to travel backward in time through a wormhole, and what his future movie plans are in the wake of the success of Interstellar. Kip Thorne received his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University, and is now the Richard Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics (Emeritus) at Caltech. Recognized as one of the world’s leading researchers in general relativity, he has done important work on gravitational waves, black holes, wormholes, and relativistic stars. His role in helping found and guide the LIGO experiment was recognized with the Nobel Prize in 2017. He is the author or co-author of numerous books, including a famously weighty textbook, Gravitation. He was executive producer of the 2014 film Interstellar, which was based on an initial concept by him and Lynda Obst. He’s been awarded too many prizes to list here, and has also been involved in a number of famous bets.
