Brother Colm O'Connell, the “godfather of Kenyan Running,” is a Patrician monk from Cork County, Ireland. Brother Colm came to St. Patrick's High School in Iten, Kenya in 1976 to teach geography. Brother Colm knew little about running or coaching when he volunteered to coach St. Patrick's athletics team. In the 46 years he has lived in Iten, Brother Colm has coached scores of world record holders and Olympic medalists, including David Rudisha, Lornah Kiplagat, Ibrahim Hussein, Isaac Songok, and Mary Keitany. Brother Colm has been crucial in turning the small, remote village of Iten, Kenya in the Great Rift Valley into the world's most significant center of long-distance running talent. In this podcast, Brother Colm offers us his philosophy and spirituality of coaching elite athletes.
Senior Religion Unplugged Contributor Dr. Robert Carle is in Baringo, Kenya for this episode, interviewing world record-holding long distance runner, Mary Keitany. Now retired, Keitany talks to Dr. Carle about her history in racing, the importance of her Catholic faith in her life, and the public school she helped start in her hometown.

This week's episode is with Christine Lampe from San Francisco. Christine is born and raised in the Bay and works as a math teacher at her former high school. She fell in love with running in college and knew at the finish line of her first race that her love for running would guide her life. In this episode, we discuss how Christine's training has adapted during the pandemic, how her trip to a training camp in Iten, Kenya unlocked running and personal potential, and her goals to continuously improve. Some highlights from our conversation: Chasing a personal best in the mile How training with SFRCC and Oiselle Volee pushes her and keeps things fun Why getting older has made her brave How math is like running Trusting your training on race day Doing core workouts next to Mary Keitany in Kenya Follow Christine on Instagram @Christinerunsfast and follow her training on Strava. How often does it seem within our running culture that more is more? And how often has this approach been ruinous to our physiological and psychological wellbeing? Luke McCallum is a man who knows this to be true. A massage therapist employed by Sports Lab (who also has a tidy 70 minute half marathon pb) Luke spent two months on a working holiday in Iten, Kenya. Whilst in Iten Luke worked and trained at the camp run by marathon legend Mary Keitany and gained an insight into what constitutes the life of an elite distance athlete. Now home, Luke sits with us and shares his insights on wellbeing, his own journey towards peak performance and, in how many ways, less is indeed more. Along the way, a shambolic Matt (battling what he is sure is Smallpox) and a calm (if not long-suffering and paint-splattered) Eugene bring you the regular DCR goodness of Greatest Run Ever, Stuff you Should Know and our rapture about a little race that happened in Tennessee. We even manage to draw our Ciele competition, despite confusing a Random Number Generator with a Random Name Generator. Enjoy!
"I think sometimes someone tells you their story, and you're listening to it and that's a value; other times you need to tell people about it in advocacy; and other times you need to do something about it to help create change. I kind of see Girls Gotta Run as an extension of that, really working to bring those stories, bring the experiences of the girls to an elevated level where more people can understand that, see that, and support them in making change." It was a real treat to talk to Kayla Nolan, the executive director of Girls Gotta Run, for this week's episode of the podcast. Girls Gotta Run is the only non-profit organization in Ethiopia using the national sport of running to create safe spaces, end child marriage and expand access to secondary school for vulnerable girls. Nolan and Girls Gotta Run are doing some amazing things for women in Ethiopia using running as vehicle to drive positive change. We covered a lot in this conversation—from how Nolan first became connected to Ethiopia, to how she became involved with Girls Gotta Run, how the organization and her role within it has evolved over the last several years, the unique challenges women face in Ethiopia, how GGR is helping create opportunities for women through running, the rich running culture in Ethiopia, the importance of advocacy, and much, much, more—and I am super excited to share it with all of you. “The number one thing is really taking ownership of what you do with your body and understanding that our ideas on strength and exercising, it's not the multivitamin. I can't eat like crap and take my daily pill and think I'm good. Strength doesn't work that way [either]. It's not like I can run like garbage, never stretch, ignore all these signals that my body is giving me all the time, but do this one exercise, and think everything is going to be OK. It needs to be flipped around.” It was super fun to sit down with my friend Nate Helming, co-founder of The Run Experience, an online community that helps runners train to become stronger, faster, and more well-rounded athletes. He is also my personal strength training coach and has helped me become a healthier, more resilient runner over the past few years. Nate and I caught up recently after a run and talked about his evolution as an athlete and a coach, how his own injury frustrations led him to think differently about his approach to strength training, and how all of those things intersected to land him where he is today. This was a great conversation and there's a lot to take away from it, especially if you've been dealing with injury frustrations of your own. "As far as balance goes, and how do you make it all work, some people call BS and say balance is not attainable, and I think there are moments in life where it feels like it's not, but I think if you can really hone yourself in on the things that are important to you at different parts of your life, it can be.” It was super fun to sit down recently with Lindsey Hein, host of the popular I'll Have Another podcast, for a wide-ranging exchange that got into the weeds of podcasting (of course), including the origins of her show, how it's evolved over the past 150+ episodes, what makes for a good conversation, and more. But that's not all! We talked about Hein's introduction to the sport back in high school and how her relationship with running has changed over the years. We also discussed the difficult decision to have a double mastectomy after she found out she was positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation—a story that caught the attention of Women's Running magazine and landed her on on the cover back in 2014—and why she doesn't really talk about it all that often. Hein is also a mom of four young boys and shares what she's learned about running during and after pregnancy. She also explains how she and her husband Glen, who is also a competitive runner, have raised their kids in a two-runner household and make it all work. Along those lines, we got into the myth of balance and how it sways depending on what's going on in your life. And there's a ton more. We covered a lot of ground in this conversation, from personal to professional and all sorts of stuff in between, and I think you'll take a lot away from it. Music and editing for this episode of the morning shakeout podcast by John Summerford at BaresRecords.com This episode is brought to you by Maurten, the sports fuel used by many of the world's top marathoners, including Eliud Kipchoge, Mo Farah, Mary Keitany, and this week's guest, Des Linden, to name a few. "I talk about why I had success in Boston—it's a 26.2-mile race that this year felt like 30, right? You add in the wind, and the conditions, and it suddenly feels longer, which is part of why I have this advantage in my mind. And so why not test that theory out in the actual distance? I think I can finish a marathon feeling like I can probably go another 10 miles, I just couldn't go a lick faster, so let's see how far we can extend that. I think those are all intriguing to me." I'm super excited to welcome my first returning guest back to the show: 2018 Boston Marathon champion Des Linden. Linden and I last spoke on Episode 3 in late January, a couple months before she won the race that changed her life. A lot has transpired since she broke the tape on Boylston Street in mid-April, including the launch of Linden & True Coffee, a coaching change, more media appearances than she can remember, and a sixth-place finish at the New York City Marathon a little over a month ago. Linden and I caught up recently at The Running Event in Austin, Texas and talked about all of those things in great detail and then some, including where her scrappiness and competitiveness come from, why her win in Boston was so validating, the importance of having confidence, trust, and faith in yourself on race day, the advantages of training in a group versus training alone, how her training has changed since leaving the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, what the rest of her competitive marathon career looks like and why ultra-distance races appeal to her, what's exciting her in running right now, why it's important to tell your story, and a lot more. Mary Keitany and Lelisa Desisa put on a show at the 2018 TCS New York City Marathon and the American men and women had 4 in the top 10.
Boston was bonkers, but so was Mary Keitany’s race plan in London. The first Diamond League of the year (which was grossly under-publicised, obv) produced some phenomenal performances, including by Caster Semenya, who’s been dragged into yet another testosterone palaver. Eliud Kipchoge, Kenenisa Bekele, Guy Adola and Mary Keitany and Tirunesh Dibaba all go for the world record.
In this episode, we recap an epic day at the Boston Marathon, featuring discussion on Desi, Yuki, Shalane, Molly, Sarah Sellers, and all of the players. Then, we give our preview and predictions on an absolutely stacked London field. Will Kipchoge maintain his dominance or could Bekele or Farah unseat him? And, on the women's side, will Mary Keitany go for the untouchable Paula Radcliffe mixed competition record? Enjoy!
Tom speaks to British middle-distance runner Ross Murray, Martin speaks to Mario Fraioli about cross country, Tony’s back with his Trials, there’s crazy times in Dubai, Mary Keitany’s going for the world record in London, and an American runs a sub-5-minute mile … for the 43rd consecutive year!
You know her, you love her, and she’s here today: Molly Huddle! Molly is a professional distance runner and 25-time national title holder who lives and trains in Providence, RI. On this episode, Molly talks about her Olympic dreams that started when she was young, and what it’s been like to actually achieve those dreams — twice. She talks about what it’s actually like competing at the Olympics (she represented Team USA in the 5K in 2012 and in the 10K in 2016), and explains why last year’s Olympics felt “like a local road race.” She also talks about the relationship between United States female distance runners right now (warm fuzzy alert!), how she trains her mental game, and her scariest career moments. Plus, she reflects on her marathon debut (at the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon), talks about being at the finish line for Shalane Flanagan’s 2017 NYCM win, and shares what’s next. (Since recording this episode, Molly has announced she will officially be racing the Boston Marathon in 2018! Go Molly!) Toby Tanser is one of the running ambassadors of our time. Not only did Toby convince Prince Harry to run with him, get Gloria Gaynor to meet a runner at the finish of a race, and friends with plenty of other celebrities, Toby is also a sub 2:20 marathoner who founded Shoe4Africa. Toby shares his story about how he went from smoking 20 cigarettes a day, drinking 6 Guinness in a day to running professionally, to where he went to do a training stint in Kenya to improve. Toby realized that for him, it was not about his running and what he wanted to accomplish, but how he could help others, especially the Kenyan runners who were putting absolutely everything into their running. Toby was responsible for the first public childrens hospital in Kenya, and continues to find new ways to help other runners, getting the best Kenyan runners in the world (including Eulid Kipchoge and Mary Keitany) to be involved in his projects. This is for you if you love to hear about the good there is in this world, and want to help others to bring light and joy to those in need. Toby is a runner who is passionate about helping others with their running goals, while helping everyone he can to be in good health, a luxury not everyone can afford. Today's Guest Toby Tanser Founder and CEO of Shoe for Africa, which built the first public children's hospital in Africa. Toby is on the board of directors for the New York Road Runners and organizes lots of events worldwide for charity. What You Will Learn About Why when he arrived in Kenya, he realized running wasn't what he was passionate about, helping people was. Why he gave away all his shoes (Including the ones on his feet), meaning he had to travel back to Sweden without any shoes on, and was consequentially arrested in Paris as a potential vagrant. Why Shoe4Africa doesn't send many shoes to Africa anymore (and what they are doing instead). How Toby got the best Kenyan runners in the world to create peace within tribes by arranging a march for peace. How and why Shoe4Africa built the first children's public hospital in Kenya with 105 beds for children. What you can do to help Toby and Shoe4Africa in the future Inspirational Quotes I wanted to stop, but I was able to keep on going because of the fear. When we compete, we compete against ourselves. We don't really compete against other people. Arriving in Kenya, expecting to just go on a training camp, the country truly changed my life in so many ways. I realized, I wasn't really interested in running, I was interested in other things in Kenya. I saw a place that had immense talent, but so few opportunities. People were giving me pairs of shoes and telling me emotional stories that I never believed possible... I realized it was empowering on both sides. Being a very small charity, we have always been very nimble and work towards the greatest need we can. Kids in Kenya have to go to overcrowded adult hospitals and have to fight for beds. We all know somebody who can help. We are a world of help. It is ingrained in our DNA. I look at the London marathon and what it has done for the world of charity, absolutely amazing. New York is close on its heels now. Mary Keitanys first senior race was a shoe4africa race. Running is such a beautiful sport.
