I am an Equestrian - Le Podcast

I am an Equestrian - Le Podcast

Let's go back to Wellington! This conversation was recorded during our stay in Wellington last January. Following in the footsteps of Beezie Madden, Kent Farrington and Katie Prudent, this is another iconic name in American equestrianism that cannot be ignored. With 5 Olympic medals from 6 participations, McLain Ward is one of the most successful riders on the American continent. This year, he celebrates his 50th birthday and completes his 35th season at the highest level of show jumping. Impressive. But what struck us most when we recorded this episode was his vision and philosophy. McLain thinks, analyses, studies and organises. Nothing is ever left to chance and each performance seems to be more a harvest than a result, the fruit of a well-defined process. Relying on a well-oiled system, he makes sure he maintains his position, season after season, deadline after deadline. As you will see from this episode, McLain Ward is a top-level athlete in every sense of the word.Hébergé par Ausha. Visitez ausha.co/politique-de-confidentialite pour plus d'informations.

Karen Sparks is showing us all what happens when you ask for more. All it took was one time at summer camp as a six year old for Karen to get hooked on horses, leading her to ask for more time with them. That simple request cemented her lifelong equestrian passion, and she's been making every moment since then count. Helping turn Wesley Clover Parks into one of Canada's premier equestrian venues is only a small part of who and what Karen has become. She talks about her decision not to live a professional rider's life, how the mind of an athlete and an entrepreneur are very similar and, perhaps most importantly, the act of giving yourself grace. Tracey talks with Karen about her involvement in Equestrian Canada, her partnership with her horse, Lugano, and that time McLain Ward gave her the best compliment she's ever received. It's an episode full of teachable moments from start to finish. You can find out more about Karen's work with the Wesley Clover Foundation here, and more about Wesley Clover Parks here.

There are a million ways to “make it” - depending on what “making it” means to you. While many riders might dream of winning a gold medal in a pinque coat on a shiny, impeccably braided horse, sometimes you'll find an even more fulfilling way to be in the horse industry that you hadn't considered before.  Today on the podcast, we have two equestrian professionals with very contrasting backgrounds, journeys, and careers reflecting on how they found their way in the horse world.  Nikko Ritter was the trainer's kid; in fact, his entire family is in horses. He had loads of opportunities handed to him from the time he was small (and yes, he was on the show Horse Power - Road to Maclay on Animal Planet). He's ridden for folks like Mclain Ward, Missy Clark, Frank Madden and most Peter Leone. Now, he and his wife operate Nikko Ritter Showstables in Wellington, a boutique training and showing operation with one main sponsor for financial backing, as well as some sales and breeding. He produces horses for all 3 rings.  Anne-Sophie Milette had a vastly different path. She had really supportive parents, but they had no experience in horses which meant that she spent a lot of her young rider years learning as she went. She studied computer programming while she continued chasing her riding dreams, and then tried opening her own 30-stall stable for a few years before realizing she really wasn't happy. She shifted her focus to sales and acting as an agent for horse buyers, and coupled with her computer programming background, started Europa Horse Agency while still bringing along a few horses on the side as well - what she describes as her perfect balance.  They discuss:  - How Anne Sophie and Nikko's differences in backgrounds led them in 2 different, but both successful and fulfilling, directions - Being the trainer's kid versus coming from a non-horsey family - Nikko's personal reflections on how, as a young rider, he lacked the ability to see the opportunities he took for granted  - Mentorship and whether it's really available to anyone who seeks it in our industry - The attitudes towards young professionals in Europe vs. North America - What happens when self-doubt comes into play

Product Review: Summit Joint Performance Brings Fast ResultsHost Laura Reeves visits with Dorian Farmer and Rhonda Arza talk about Summit Joint Performance. This is a chondroitin product, used for years in Olympic horse circles, but now available for dogs and, hopefully, humans in the near future. “This particular product was actually made to go into eyes, human eyes, during corneal lens transplant surgeries as an anti-inflammatory,” Summit Joint Performance founder Farmer said. From the Summit Joint Performance https://summitjp.com/?u=K9movement (website): What is Summit? Summit is simply chondroitin 4 sulfate (C4S), suspended in sterile water. Summit was originally developed to use in human ocular lens transplant surgeries. Summit is the purest form of C4S available. Unlike other products, it has had all heparins and other potentially damaging molecules removed from the single C4S molecule. Summit is an all-natural product, not a synthetic created in the lab, nor polysulfated. Summit has an incredibly low molecular weight, and its small size allows it to penetrate barriers in the body, like joint capsules, much easier than other products. A large percentage of the molecules that make up tissues in the joints is C4S. Replenishing these structures with nature’s version of this important molecule, instead of synthetic lab creations that are over 100x the molecular weight, is of great benefit. [caption id="attachment_8363" align="alignleft" width="300"] Dorian Farmer and the SJP team.[/caption] Farmer’s story of testing Summit on his personal “guinea pig” animals is inspiring. “We injected Ultra on a Wednesday evening. At that point in time she couldn't get up off the ground. By Thursday morning when we woke up, she was standing in our bedroom wagging her tail looking at me. She had got up off the ground by herself, into the bedroom and was waking us up. She could walk around the house. She could sit down. She could lay down and she could get back up. That was within 12 hours. By the following day she was trotting around the house and actually playing with me. “(A couple days later I got a video of) Ultra chasing the golf cart at a dead run from the back pasture to the front pasture. It's about 900 yards from one to the other. She lived for another year pain free because of it. That truly was the point where I knew that we had something that was incredible. She had been on all the pain relievers and all the other arthritic medication and everything else and nothing was touching it. One shot of this new product and saved her life. I mean, we were going to euthanize her….” [caption id="attachment_8362" align="alignright" width="300"] Rhonda Arza, SJP Vice President[/caption] Arza, Summit Joint Performance Vice President, shared her similar experience. “I was a horse trainer for 28 years and one of the things that I knew was that I didn't want to be a horse trainer for 29 years. So, I needed an exit strategy. Summit last November became a direct sales company. I had experience in the field, so I knew that direct sales was a way to make significant income and create an exit strategy not only for myself, but for other trainers who were looking to retire, get out, whatever they needed to do. “When this came along, because of the level of sponsored riders that this company already had in place, like people were putting it in their $10,000,000 Olympic level horses, we had guys like McLain Ward (using the product), I knew that we had a product that was definitely something that I could talk about. “I put it into my 20-year-old jumper and he just turned right around and acted like he was ten. I wanted to get into the dog space because we have performance dogs. My husband shows in rally and obedience and we have Australian Shepherds. Knowing that it was going to be turning over to oral (versus intramuscular injection) was going to open up the whole planet for us. Not only dog show people, but pet owners and people who have... "Desert Flight" is an award-winning film documentary that explores the horse-human bond through the world of show jumping. Filmmaker Samia Staehle’s goal was to capture the visceral way horses enrich our lives and our senses. The film provides an honest look at how much the sport of show jumping means to its participants through the perspectives of equestrians from different walks of life. Shot over three weeks during the climactic end of the HITS Thermal horse show circuit in California, "Desert Flight" is both visually stunning and artistically compelling. Samia, a former Associated Press news producer and amateur show jumper from Washington state, chose the Thermal show grounds for her work partially because the stunning beauty of the desert reminded her of her former home in India. "Desert Flight" includes interviews from such luminaries of the sport as Richard Spooner, Will Simpson, Mandy Porter and Richard Fellers, but also includes vignettes from lesser-known equestrians with big dreams. "Desert Flight" was filmed by Tell Studios, whose Detroit, Michigan, based crew had no experience with horses. Instead, they were told to “go out and find what drives these horse people to do what they do every day.” "Desert Flight" made its world premiere at the FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina, September 2018. The 39-minute film was named Best of Festival and Best Documentary at the 2018 EQUUS Film Festival in New York City and is available to US Equestrian Federation members on the USEF Network.   Topics of Discussion: [:24] About today’s episode with Samia Staehle. This week is a very special edition of Because of Horses! Your host, Elise Gaston Chand, talks with some of the horse world’s most accomplished equestrians — sharing their riding and training philosophies, their insights into horses, advice for aspiring competitors, and their fondest memories of the Hampton Classic Horse Show! These featured guests are Georgina Bloomberg, Kelli Cruciotti, Peter Wylde, Joe Fargis, and Chief Press Officer Marty Bauman.   For over 40 years, the Classic has featured world-class riders and horses — including Olympic and Pan American Games medalists — from around the globe, competing for $800,000 in prize money. With something for everyone, from the avid horse lover to the non-equestrian spectator, the Classic is one of the largest outdoor horse shows in the U.S.; a not-to-miss segment on the summer tour. Where else can you watch McLain Ward, Kent Farrington, and Anne Kursinski compete… then spot Bruce Springsteen watching his phenomenally talented daughter, Jessica, clear a course in record time? Or see Steven Spielberg, Jerry Seinfeld, Kelly Ripa, Brooke Shields, or Martha Stewart stroll by?   The Classic is also an event straight from the heart with fundraising and community support, animal adoptions onsite, championship competition for disabled riders, and one of the most anticipated classes during the week-long show: Leadline, with our littlest riders judged by two-time Olympic gold medalist, Joe Fargis.    The Classic runs August 25th through September 1st, 2019, in Bridgehampton, New York.   Ready to talk with the greats? Tune in!   About our accomplished guests: Joe Fargis is one of the greats of show jumping. He trained under the legendary Bertalan de Nemethy and is perhaps best known for his partnership with the Thoroughbred mare Touch of Class, with whom he won the individual and team gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He also won the team silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics with Mill Pearl. Joe was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame in 2007 and was awarded the US Equestrian Federation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. US Olympian, trainer and youth mentor Peter Wylde is one of the most well-respected horsemen in the sport of show jumping, not just for his extensive competitive success but also his commitment to the education of both amateurs and juniors. Peter is best known for his partnership with Turnabout Farms’ Fein Cera, who he rode to the individual bronze and the Best Horse award at the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain, and the team gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Peter is a three-time grand prix winner at the Hampton Classic.   Georgina Bloomberg is a native New Yorker and international show jumper who grew up competing all along the east coast. She made her FEI World Cup Final debut in 2005 and was a member of the winning team in the Samsung Super League Nation’s Cup in France. Georgina was a member of the bronze medal-winning Pan American Games team in 2015 and competed in Gothenburg, Sweden in this year’s Longines FEI World Cup Finals. She is a noted philanthropist, focusing particularly on issues related to animal welfare. Kelli Cruciotti is an emerging star in U.S. show jumping, currently ranked 26th in the country by the United States Equestrian Federation, and a 2020 Olympic hopeful. Kelli enjoyed a storied junior career, with success in all three rings and a win at the coveted 2015 USEF/Pessoa Medal Finals, but today show jumping has become her main passion. After turning professional in 2016, Kelli has continued to pile up top results in the jumper ring at such prestigious shows as Devon, Harrisburg, the Hamptons, Capital Challenge, Washington and more. In 2019, she represented the United States in her first Longines FEI World Cup Final in Gothenburg, Sweden, finishing 16th on her mare, Hadja Van Orshof.   Topics of Discussion: [:18] About today’s special episode! Connecticut native Adrienne Sternlicht, 25, has watched her US rankings climb to no 6 and elevate her to the short list for the FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon, NC this fall. Trained by McLain Ward, Adrienne’s ‘once in a lifetime’ partner is the 10 year old mare Cristalline; a ride she acquired from Australian Chris Chugg two years ago. Together they notched up a career highlight by winning a 1.50m class at the Knokke CSI5* earlier this month. Adrienne is campaigning her three top horses in Europe this summer; the other two being Toulago and Fantast who are also on form and raising Adrienne’s profile as she prepares for the final USEF Observation Trial in Dublin before heading back to the States. Still riding as an amateur Adrienne graduated from Brown University and has other goals outside of the show jumping arena which she shares with us. And we hear how she prepares mentally and physically for big competitions. Chris Stafford caught up with Adrienne at her base in Belgium before she heads to the Longines CSI Ascona in Switzerland.
