As his party and candidates are subjected to brutal oppression on the eve on the Pakistan elections, has Pakistan lost its democracy? As the war rages on in Gaza, why has the savage decision to remove funding for The UNRWA (The United Nations Relief and Works Agency) not 24 hours after the ICJ ruling in The Hague against Israel been made and agreed to by Western Leaders? How can the world look away from such an image? In the Hague, South Africa buries Israel under the accusations of genocide as Israel continues to argue its right to self defence under international law. "President Donald Trump on Monday sent a four-page letter to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization, threatening to permanently freeze US funding to the United Nations agency in the midst of a global pandemic that has made international cooperation as crucial as ever," Common Dreams reported Tuesday. This comes as "Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday pledged $2 billion to the WHO to tackle the coronavirus pandemic and said he supported a 'global review' of the international response to the outbreak, but only if it is led by the WHO and only after the virus has been contained," Fox News reported Monday. What are we to make of this?As Trump continues the removal of various inspectors general, "the firing of State Department IG Steve Linick might be the most problematic," the Washington Post's Aaron Blake wrote in a Tuesday analysis. "Linick, we've come to find out, had been investigating Secretary of State Mike Pompeo personally, as well as a major decision Pompeo had approved on an arms deal with Saudi Arabia. Both the White House and Pompeo have said the removal of Linick was Pompeo's call." Why is this problematic?"US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has threatened that Washington will 'exact consequences' if the International Criminal Court (ICC) moves ahead with a potential war crimes investigation into Israel," PressTV reported Sunday. In response to this, "a bipartisan group of US House and Senate legislators sent separate letters to Pompeo urging him to defend Israel, a firm US ally, against ICC investigations, saying the tribunal's assertion amounted to a 'politicization' of the court's mission," PressTV continued. Is it true that a "disinformation campaign aimed to justify the assassination of Qassem Soleimani by painting him and Iran as willing enablers of al-Qaeda," as The Grayzone reported Tuesday? According to the outlet, the propaganda operation relied heavily on a shoddily sourced book entitled “The Exile." "Going into the contest, aides and others were looking to see if Biden could just keep the race competitive with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), with an eye toward a contested convention," The Hill reported Wednesday. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg; businessman Tom Steyer; and Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) have dropped out of the race. Will Bloomberg's endorsement help Biden?Alabama man Nathaniel Woods, 42, who was convicted of fatally shooting three police officers in 2004, was executed Thursday night, "despite last-minute legal efforts and pleas for clemency from family members, high-profile activists, and even a victim's sister, who all say he shouldn't be put to death since he didn't pull the trigger," the Daily Beast reported Thursday. Not only did Woods not pull the trigger, the man who did admitted that Woods did not conspire with him to kill the cops. This Sunday, March 8, is International Women's Day. In that context, the Guardian reported Thursday that Sir Andrew McFarlane, president of the family division of the high court in England and Wales, found that the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, "orchestrated the abductions of two of his children – one from the streets of Cambridge – and subjected his youngest wife [Princess Haya] to a campaign of 'intimidation.'" The newspaper reports: "In the United States, the death toll rose to 14, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University. Several states, including Maryland, confirmed their first COVID-19 cases." The hearing will last for about a week, with proceedings expected to resume on May 18 for an additional three weeks. Many of the massive anti-neoliberal protest movements that exploded across the globe last year have pressed on into 2020, especially those that rose up throughout Latin America. Many of those demonstrations — clearly newsworthy due to their enormous size, composition, and motives — were and continue to be ignored by prominent English language news outlets, essentially creating a media blackout of these movements. A lot of people were waiting for former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to get to the debate sage; unfortunately for him, one of those people was Sen Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). Bloomberg wasn't stopped and frisked last night: he was strip-searched. What are the takeaways from Wednesday night's Democratic presidential debate? Warren described Bloomberg as “a billionaire who calls women fat broads and horse-faced lesbians” and demanded that he release women who worked at his company from nondisclosure agreements they signed in harassment settlements. Were there any substantive policy discussions that came out of this?Roger J. Stone Jr., the Republican political consultant, was sentenced Thursday afternoon to 40 months in prison for lying to Congress and obstructing the Russia investigation. Judge Amy Berman Jackson of Federal District Court for the District of Columbia handed down the sentence.
