The debates and discussions in particular were of a very high standard and variety and audiences and speakers had a very special treat this year at their Saint Mary's mecca on the Falls Road.Advancing the case for Irish UnityLá breithe shona do Choimisiún Shinn Féin ar Thodhchaí na hÉireann - Happy birthday to Sinn Féin's Commission on the Future of Ireland. It's hard to imagine the devastation caused by the Turkey-Syria earthquake on February 6: more than 50,000 people killed, hundreds of thousands displaced, and at least $100B in damage to Turkey's infrastructure alone. Medair is one of the NGOs working to provide basic resources including water and shelter in and around Aleppo. Aid worker Raija-Liisa Schmidt-Teigen joins us live from Damascus. But first... 2:08 | It turns out a BC company will not be manufacturing and selling cocaine to the general public after all. Despite what Adastra Holdings announced late last week, Health Canada says the claims are inaccurate. HAVE YOUR SAY: talk@ryanjespersen.com 21:05 | Raija-Liisa Schmidt-Teigen has been doing humanitarian work in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Syria for more than 15 years. 10:18 | New Zealand's Prime Minster is stepping down, in somewhat of a surprising move. Jacinda Ardern hasn't specifically said why she's leaving, but that's not stopping pundits from speculating. Supriya Dwivedi says it may be proof of a problem plaguing politics around the world. Plus, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh faced fire again this week for talking about poverty while wearing a pricey watch. Is this something the average person should care about? Supriya has something to admit! 33:10 | Grocery costs are way up across the country. Last week, we covered the transition from the previous council to the new, and this week, we look far-ish into the future to the next election, the one in October 2026. You will hear in this podcast that planning for the next election begins almost immediately after the one that's just completed, because there are a lot of complicated questions that need to be answered before the time comes to vote again. Now you may not be really in a mood to think about voting again; we've had three elections in the last 13 months, but elections don't grow on trees, so to speak. Thousands of hours go into planning, setting up, and executing an election, and in the case of municipal elections, it's just one of the functions of the City department responsible for overseeing and executing the public meetings of council and committees. There's a lot to consider before the next election, and only some of it is under the clerks' control. They're probably going to talk about internet voting as a way of encouraging anemic voter turnout, in addition to being a way to make the election generally more accessible. By the 2026 election, the list of electors should be moved from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation to Elections Ontario, so that's one problem solved, but what are the other issues? Stephen O'Brien, who is the City Clerk for the City of Guelph, joins us again to answer that question and more. He will talk about internet voting, and the arguments for and against. O'Brien will also discuss how his staff examines the potential voting methods, and whether increasing voter turnout should be a consideration in decisions made by his office. And finally, he will talk about updating campaign rules, and the effect of misinformation and conspiracies on his job. So let's talk about the 2026 election on this 2022 edition of the Guelph Politicast! The Have Your Say survey for post-election feedback is now closed, but you can still get in touch with the clerks office at clerks [at] guelph.ca. The rail crossing on Edinburgh Road has been the site of some controversy lately. The City of Guelph initiated the study of seven different street level rail crossings along the Metrolinx line across town, and they determined that there was one crossing that they had to look at a lot more closely. The implications could be big, so this week, we're going to sit down and talk things out. Back in 2020, just a couple of weeks before you-know-what, the City of Guelph announced that they were closing the intersection at the Metrolinx train tracks near Kent Street along Dublin. The surrounding neighbourhood was angry about such a sweeping decision, but the issue was safety; the increased frequency of two-way GO trains through Guelph, and the increased speeds by which they travel, required a more cautious approach across the whole line. That's why the City's transportation department started that public engagement on the seven crossings earlier this year, and why they wanted to take a closer look at Edinburgh Road. The potential options range from “do nothing” to constructing an overpass or underpass, which would mean properties in the area might have to be expropriated. That's when the proverbial stuff hit the fan. People are concerned about their homes and businesses in the area, and they're not sure what to think about any of this. That's where this week's podcast comes in. Jennifer Juste, Transportation Planning Manager at City Of Guelph, is the guest, and she's going to tell us step-by-step how we got here, and where we go next. She will talk about the all the players' roles, the changes coming to the Metrolinx line because of the expansion of service, and why the focus has landed on Edinburgh Road. She will also explain why this is the beginning of the process, not the end, and how you can stay informed as things develop. So let's explain what's happening on Edinburgh on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can stay up to date about the Environmental Assessment of the train tracks on Edinburgh by visiting the City's Have Your Say site. It's too late to provide comments, but you can still subscribe to receive updates about the project. If you want to stay in touch with the Metrolinx side of things, they put out a monthly newsletter about the latest developments in Guelph and area. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Investigative journalist, Rachel Donald, is behind the podcast "Planet Critical" and uses that platform to talk with influential people from all around the world. She says: "Essentially, it's our behaviour that's at the root of the problem. But so often this isn't addressed as the root. Our economic system claims tech will save us from ourselves—but imagine we do find a silver bullet, do we have the social cohesion in place to implement that solution or any? There's a lot of interest in the excavation of Baker Street. Maybe it's the ghoulish quality of uncovering remains from an old graveyard, or maybe it's because this is all literally happening on the main street, but a lot of eyes are on this big hole being dug in the old Baker Street lot. This week, we go inside that hole with the two men holding the shovels. Once upon a time, the newly founded Guelph settlement needed somewhere to bury their dead, and for some strange reason they chose the site of a future downtown parking lot. Jokes aside, nearly 170 years after the graveyard next to the site of the original St. George's Anglican Church was closed, and after all the people buried there were supposed to have been moved to Woodlawn Memorial Park, we're still finding people under Baker who never left. The history under the parking lot entered modern public consciousness in 2005 when work on Baker Street revealed remains from some of Guelph's earliest residents. More remains were discovered in 2010 and 2016, so dealing with the graves that remain under Baker was a necessary first step in getting the site ready for redevelopment. With work scheduled to begin again next month, the time is ripe to sit down talk about what we've learned so far. City of Guelph Project Manager Stephen Gazzola and Project Archaeologist with Archaeological Research Associates Limited Mike McCready join us for this week podcast to talk about all that. They will discuss what else they've found in the Baker lot other than remains, what they've learned about Guelph's early years in the process, and how they cope when the dig reveals something they didn't expect to find. Also, they'll talk about what work is left to be done and how they'll know if they've found everything. So let's dig into Baker Street on this week's edition of the Guelph Politicast! You can follow the progress of the dig on the City of Guelph's website, and now that winter's over, work will begin on the excavation will begin again sometime next month. You can see the latest virtual open house about the next phase of the Baker Street redevelopment right now, and leave your questions and comments, on the City's Have Your Say site. We used to have these quarterly check ups about transit issues, but the pandemic hit last March, and suddenly transit service was limited. Buses are still running on a reduced schedule, but now the City of Guelph is looking to the future, first with the Transportation Master Plan, and now with the review of a new 10-year plan for transit expansion. But how is all this sitting with transit fans? Last time we had a Transit Pass, it was about this time last year and buses were still operating with only 10 people at a time. In the weeks that followed, masking allowed more people to get back on the bus, but the almost non-existent number of in-person classes at the University of Guelph drove a big whole in ridership and revenue. Staff has said that it could take Transit about two to three years to recover ridership post-pandemic. Having said that, the City and Guelph Transit are looking to the future. There was the revelation of the draft Transportation Master Plan a few weeks ago at council, and now the City is collecting feedback about a proposed multi-year expansion and realignment of transit routes. The City wants 19 per cent more trips on modes of transportation other than single-occupancy vehicles, which sounds easy enough, but are these plans the best way to get more people on the bus? Steve Petric, chair of the Transit Action Alliance of Guelph or TAAG, will join us to pursue this, and many other pressing transit questions. He will also talk about the the good news in the 10-year plan, the parts of the plan that still present challenges, and whether city council is going to be willing to proceed with all the ambitious changes. Also Petric will talk about what it's like to take the bus these days, and whether we'll need those two-to-three years to get ridership back on the proverbial track. So let's strap in for the latest edition of the Transit Pass on this week's Guelph Politicast! To learn more about the Transit Action Alliance of Guelph, go to their website. The City of Guelph is collecting feedback about the proposed changes to transit routes, and you can see those maps and documents at the City's Have Your Say page. There's also a town hall about the changes next Wednesday June 16 at 7 pm and you can follow along on the City's Facebook page. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Hervey Bay on QLD's fabulous Fraser Coast is a 'paradise' for tourists, nomads and holiday-makers with kids wanting to enjoy the ‘Wide Bay's' endless safe stretches of beach. Except if your kids have fur.You see the only caravan parks situated right on the beachfront - and there are four of them - are owned by the local Council and don't allow pets. Hervey Bay councillor Jade Wellings thinks that's not only unfair – she believes the region is missing out on valuable income because pet owners are by-passing Hervey Bay to go elsewhere to get beach-side locations – and she wants to get at least one or preferably two of the council's caravan parks' rules changed to allow pets. But the Council won't act until it hears via its online survey that people want pet-friendly parks. We caught up with Councillor Jade Wellings to find out more.+ HAVE YOUR SAY! +The general caravan & camping community is being encouraged to participate via Council's Have Your Say page on its website – www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/have-your-say - with the survey remaining open until 15 January 2021.

The song this week is The Colour Of Time and is one I co-wrote with a good friend of mine called Patricia Knapton...it features a painter who sees rainbows where there is no rain and everyone in his painting is smiling with no hatred etc....proving the world is a better place through a six year old's eyes instead of the goons who run things at the moment. We have been bombarded with documentaries on Lady Di....telling us nothing we don't know....I think we have all had enough now.....so much so I wrote to the "Have Your Say" section of a TV magazine....and got 10 quid for my letter !!!...so I'm not alone in my opinion........and adding to the mountain of flowers I realise that until people get a life and stop acting like sheep there is little hope for humanity. We also have coverage of the gay pride marches etc.......it's time some organisations got over themselves..companies have given them an 8% rise...so up goes the TV licence...brilliant.....we'll have "Sir" Chris Evans next.. are....confused?...just a bit....mistakenly taking him to the pictures could be an error. We've had two major crashes on the motorways....one in the Conway Tunnel in Wales causing miles of tailbacks and another on the M1....this will never change unless they alter the driving laws....we need to rid the roads of complete idiots who think they are Lewis Hamilton.......jail sentences are what is required....and stiffer driving tests.....but then the human rights brigade would come out of the woodwork. I'm not the biggest Beatles fan but they have had a Beatles celebration event in Liverpool....which has been a success .... when you live here it wears a bit thin.. Di....Beatles...human rights....political correctness.....I think I'll apply to be an astronaught and take up residence on Mars.

Di....Beatles...human rights....political correctness.....I think I'll apply to be an astronaught and take up residence on Mars.

Is it possible to go to court and make the process less costly, less acrimonious and actually helpful? Find out how with Deborah Moskovitch and Steve Peck as we discuss with our guest, Justice Rebecca Love Kourlis of IAALS, access to justice, and what it means for family court litigants. Judge Kourlis is the author of more than 200 opinions and dissents during her tenure as a judge, and also spearheaded significant reforms in the judicial system relating to juries, family law and attorney regulation. Her contribution to the justice system is significant and impressive. IAALS, the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System, is busy working to make the process of separation and divorce more fair, dignified and affordable. And, most importantly, preserve families in the most positive way they can be during a difficult time. IAALS’ Honoring Families Initiative has successfully developed an interdisciplinary model for reaching out-of-court resolutions in cases of separation and divorce. That model is now at work at the Resource Center for Separating and Divorcing Families at the University of Denver. They are at work tackling the challenges of the in-court divorce process, identifying the issues and compiling research on a number of fronts. That research will help IAALS along with some of the best minds in the country to suggest real solutions to improve the system. We explore: What does access to justice mean for family court litigants What are some of the access to justice issues facing family court litigants today? Is cost a significant issue in family court cases? How are courts and individual judges dealing with these issues ……and much more! If you are contemplating divorce, in the throes of divorce and not sure what to do, then you won’t want to miss the valuable information shared by Becky Kourlis. Empower yourself with information and knowledge so that you can divorce more holistically to avoid the pain and scars that can emerge!
